We write the conditions for open strings with charged endpoints in the language of gluing matrices. We identify constraints imposed on the gluing matrices that are essential in this setup and investigate the question of their invariance under the Poisson-Lie T-plurality transformations. We show that the chosen set of constraints is equivalent to the statement that the lifts of D-branes into the Drinfel'd double are right cosets with respect to a maximally isotropic subgroup and therefore it is invariant under the Poisson-Lie T-plurality transformations.
We generalize the prescription realizing classical Poisson-Lie T-duality as canonical transformation to Poisson-Lie T-plurality. The key ingredient is the transformation of left-invariant fields under Poisson-Lie T-plurality. Explicit formulae realizing canonical transformation are presented and the preservation of canonical Poisson brackets and Hamiltonian density is shown.
Poisson-Lie T-plurality constructs a chain of supergravity solutions from a Poisson-Lie symmetric solution. We study the Poisson-Lie T-plurality for supergravity solutions with $H$-flux, which are not Poisson-Lie symmetric but admit non-Abelian isometries, $\mathcal{L}_{v_a}g_{mn}=0$ and $\mathcal{L}_{v_a}H_3=0$ with $\mathcal{L}_{v_a}B_2\neq 0$. After introducing the general procedure, we study the Poisson-Lie T-plurality for two WZW backgrounds, the AdS$_3$ with $H$-flux and the Nappi-Witten background.
We investigate (non-)Abelian T-duality from the perspective of Poisson-Lie T-plurality. We show that sigma models related by duality/plurality are given not only by Manin triples obtained from decompositions of Drinfel'd double, but also by their particular embeddings, i.e. maps that relate bases of these decompositions. This allows us to get richer set of dual or plural sigma models than previously thought. That's why we ask how T-duality is defined and what should be the `canonical' duality or plurality transformation.
Conditions for the gluing matrix defining consistent boundary conditions of two-dimensional nonlinear sigma-models are analyzed and reformulated. Transformation properties of the right-invariant fields under Poisson-Lie T-plurality are used to derive a formula for the transformation of the boundary conditions. Examples of transformation of D-branes in two and three dimensions are presented. We investigate obstacles arising in this procedure and propose possible solutions.
The Poisson-Lie T-plurality is an equivalence of string theories on various cosets $\mathcal{D}/\tilde{G}$, $\mathcal{D}/\tilde{G}'$, $\cdots$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is a Drinfel'd double and $\tilde{G}$, $\tilde{G}'$, $\cdots$ are maximal isotropic subgroups. This can be extended to the equivalence for dressing cosets, i.e., $F\backslash\mathcal{D}/\tilde{G}$, $F\backslash\mathcal{D}/\tilde{G}'$, $\cdots$, where $F$ is an isotropic subgroup of $\mathcal{D}$. We explore this extended Poisson-Lie T-plurality, clarifying the relation between several previous approaches. We propose a gauged sigma m…
We look for 3-dimensional Poisson-Lie dualizable sigma models that satisfy the vanishing beta-function equations with constant dilaton field. Using the Poisson-Lie T-plurality we then construct 3-dimensional sigma models that correspond to various decompositions of Drinfeld double. Models with nontrivial dilaton field may appear. It turns out that for ``traceless'' dual algebras they satisfy the vanishing beta-function equations as well. In certain cases the dilaton cannot be defined in some of the dual models. We provide an explanation why this happens and give criteria predicting when it hap…
Classical equations of motion for three-dimensional sigma-models in curved background are solved by a transformation that follows from the Poisson-Lie T-plurality and transform them into the equations in the flat background. Transformations of coordinates that make the metric constant are found and used for solving the flat model. The Poisson-Lie transformation is explicitly performed by solving the PDE's for auxiliary functions and finding the relevant transformation of coordinates in the Drinfel'd double. String conditions for the solutions are preserved by the Poisson-Lie transformations. T…
We generalize the formulation of Poisson-Lie (PL) T-plurality proposed by R. von Unge [JHEP 07 (2002) 014] from Lie groups to Lie supergroups. By taking a convenient ansatz for metric of the $σ$-model in terms of the left-invariant one-forms of the isometry Lie supergroups $(C^3 +A)$ and $GL(1|1)$ we construct cosmological string backgrounds, including $(2+1|2)$-dimensional metric, time-dependent dilaton and vanishing torsion, in a way that they satisfy the one-loop beta-function equations. Starting from the decompositions of semi-Abelian Drinfeld superdoubles (DSDs) generated by the $({\C}^3 …
String theory has the T-duality symmetry when the target space has Abelian isometries. A generalization of the T-duality, where the isometry group is non-Abelian, is known as the non-Abelian T-duality, which works well as a solution-generating technique in supergravity. In this paper, we describe the non-Abelian T-duality as a kind of O(D,D) transformation when the isometry group acts without isotropy. We then provide a duality transformation rule for the Ramond-Ramond fields by using the technique of double field theory (DFT). We also study a more general class of solution-generating techniqu…
We extend the path-integral formalism for Poisson-Lie T-duality to include the case of Drinfeld doubles which can be decomposed into bi-algebras in more than one way. We give the correct shift of the dilaton, correcting a mistake in the litterature. We then use the fact that the six dimensional Drinfeld doubles have been classified to write down all possible conformal Poisson-Lie T-duals of three dimensional space times and we explicitly work out two duals to the constant dilaton and zero anti-symmetric tensor Bianchi type V space time and show that they satisfy the string equations of motion.…
Starting from the classification of 6-dimensional Drinfeld doubles and their decomposition into Manin triples we construct 3-dimensional Poisson-Lie T-dual or more precisely T-plural sigma models. Of special interest are those that are conformally invariant. Examples of models that satisfy vanishing beta-function equations with zero dilaton are presented and their duals are calculated. It turns out that for "traceless" dual algebras they satisfy the beta-function equations as well but usually with rather nontrivial dilaton. We also present explicit examples of several kinds of obstacles and di…
Poisson-Lie T-duality and plurality are important solution generating techniques in string theory and (generalized) supergravity. Since duality/plurality does not preserve conformal invariance, the usual beta function equations are replaced by Generalized Supergravity Equations containing vector $\mathcal{J}$. In this paper we apply Poisson-Lie T-plurality on Bianchi cosmologies. We present a formula for the vector $\mathcal{J}$ as well as transformation rule for dilaton, and show that plural backgrounds together with this dilaton and $\mathcal{J}$ satisfy the Generalized Supergravity Equation…
Covariance of the one-loop renormalization group equations with respect to Poisson-Lie T-plurality of sigma models is discussed. The role of ambiguities in renormalization group equations of Poisson-Lie sigma models with truncated matrices of parameters is investigated.
In previous papers we have presented many purely bosonic solutions of Generalized Supergravity Equations obtained by Poisson-Lie T-duality and plurality of flat and Bianchi cosmologies. In this paper we focus on their compactifications and identify solutions that can be interpreted as T-folds. To recognize T-folds we adopt the language of Double Field Theory and discuss how Poisson-Lie T-duality/plurality fits into this framework. As a special case we confirm that all non-Abelian T-duals can be compactified as T-folds.
We analyse the general boundary conditions (branes) consistent with the Poisson-sigma model and study the structure of the phase space of the model defined on the strip with these boundary conditions. Finally, we discuss the perturbative quantization of the model on the disc with a Poisson-Dirac brane and relate it to Kontsevich's formula for the deformation quantization of the Dirac bracket induced on the brane.
We introduce a Nambu-Poisson bracket in the geometrical description of the D=11 M5-brane. This procedure allows us, under some assumptions, to eliminate the local degrees of freedom of the antisymmetric field in the M5-brane Hamiltonian and to express it as a D=11 p-brane theory invariant under symplectomorphisms. A regularization of the M5-brane in terms of a multi D1-brane theory invariant under the $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ group in the limit when $N\to\infty$ is proposed. Also, a regularization for the D=10 D4-brane in terms of a multi D0-brane theory is suggested.
We continue our investigation on the Nambu-Poisson description of M5-brane in a large constant C-field background (NP M5-brane theory) constructed in Refs.[1, 2]. In this paper, the low energy limit where the NP M5-brane theory is applicable is clarified. The background independence of the NP M5-brane theory is made manifest using the variables in the BLG model of multiple M2-branes. An all order solution to the Seiberg-Witten map is also constructed.
Global issues of the Poisson-Lie T-duality are addressed. It is shown that oriented open strings propagating on a group manifold $G$ are dual to $D$-brane - anti-$D$-brane pairs propagating on the dual group manifold $\ti G$. The $D$-branes coincide with the symplectic leaves of the standard Poisson structure induced on the dual group $\ti G$ by the dressing action of the group $G$. T-duality maps the momentum of the open string into the mutual distance of the $D$-branes in the pair. The whole picture is then extended to the full modular space $M(D)$ of the Poisson-Lie equivalent $\si$-models …
We analyze BPS equations for string-like configurations derived from the M5-brane worldvolume action with a Nambu-Poisson structure constructed in arXiv:0804.3629, arXiv:0805.2898. We solve the BPS equations up to the first order in the parameter $g$ which characterizes the strength of the Nambu-Poisson bracket. We compare our solutions to previously constructed BPS string solitons in the conventional description of M5-brane in a constant three-form background via Seiberg-Witten map, and find agreement.
Superimposed D-branes have matrix-valued functions as their transverse coordinates, since the latter take values in the Lie algebra of the gauge group inside the stack of coincident branes. This leads to considering a classical dynamics where the multiplication law for coordinates and/or momenta, being given by matrix multiplication, is nonabelian. Quantisation further introduces noncommutativity as a deformation in powers of Planck's constant. Given an arbitrary simple Lie algebra and an arbitrary Poisson manifold, both finite-dimensional, we define a corresponding C*-algebra that can be rega…
By using the recently proposed prescription arXiv:0804.3629 for obtaining the $M5$ brane action from multiple $M2$ branes action in BLG theory, we examine such transition when 11 Dimensional background antisymmetric fluxes couple to the $M2$ brane world volume. Such couplings was suggested in arXiv:0805.3427 where it was used the fact that various fields in BLG theory are valued in a Lie 3-algebra. We argue that this action and promoting it by Nambu-Poisson bracket gives the expected coupling of fluxes with $M5$ brane at least at weak coupling limit. We also study some other aspects of the act…
The BLG model for multiple M2-branes motivates an M5-brane theory with a novel gauge symmetry defined by the Nambu-Poisson structure. This Nambu-Poisson gauge symmetry for an M5-brane in large C-field background can be matched, on double dimension reduction, with the Poisson limit of the noncommutative gauge symmetry for a D4-brane in B-field background. Naively, one expects that there should exist a certain deformation of the Nambu-Poisson structure to match with the full noncommutative gauge symmetry including higher order terms. However, We prove the no-go theorem that there is no way to de…
Recently it was proposed that the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory with Nambu-Poisson structure describes an M5-brane in a three-form flux background. In this paper we investigate the superalgebra associated with this theory. We derive the central charges corresponding to M5-brane solitons in 3-form backgrounds. We also show that double dimensional reduction of the superalgebra gives rise to the Poisson bracket terms of a non-commutative D4-brane superalgebra. We provide interpretations of the D4-brane charges in terms of spacetime intersections.
We show that the WZW model on the Heisenberg Lie group $H_4$ has Poisson-Lie symmetry only when the dual Lie group is ${ A}_2 \oplus 2{ A}_1$. In this way, we construct the mutual T-dual sigma models on Drinfel'd double generated by the Heisenberg Lie group $H_4$ and its dual pair, ${ A}_2 \oplus 2{ A}_1$, as the target space in such a way that the original model is the same as the $H_4$ WZW model. Furthermore, we show that the dual model is conformal up to two loops order. Finally, we discuss $D$-branes and the worldsheet boundary conditions defined by a gluing matrix on the $H_4$ WZW model. …
We investigate a special class of Poisson--Lie T-plurality transformations of Bianchi cosmologies invariant with respect to non-semisimple Bianchi groups. For six-dimensional semi-Abelian Manin triples $\mathfrak{b}\bowtie \mathfrak{a}$ containing Bianchi algebras $\mathfrak{b}$ we identify general forms of Poisson--Lie identities and dualities. We show that these can be decomposed into simple factors, namely automorphisms of Manin triples, B-shifts, $β$-shifts, and "full" or "factorized" dualities. Further, we study effects of these transformations and utilize the decompositions to obtain new…
A generalization of the embedding approach for d-dimensional gravity based upon p-brane theories is considered. We show that the D-dimensional p-brane coupled to an antisymmetric tensor field of rank (p+1) provides the dynamical basis for the description of d=(p+1) dimensional gravity in the isometric embedding formalism. ''Physical'' matter appears in such an approach as a manifestation of a D-dimensional antisymmetric tensor (generalized Kalb- Ramond) background. For the simplest case, the Lorentz harmonic formulation of the bosonic string in a Kalb-Ramond background and its relation to a fi…
We analyse the problem of boundary conditions for the Poisson-Sigma model and extend previous results showing that non-coisotropic branes are allowed. We discuss the canonical reduction of a Poisson structure to a submanifold, leading to a Poisson algebra that generalizes Dirac's construction. The phase space of the model on the strip is related to the (generalized) Dirac bracket on the branes through a dual pair structure.
We prove that non-coisotropic branes in the Poisson-Sigma model are allowed at the quantum level. When the brane is defined by second-class constraints, the perturbative quantization of the model yields the Kontsevich's star product associated to the Dirac bracket on the brane. We also discuss the quantization when both first and second-class constraints are present.
An abundance of the Poisson-Lie symmetries of the WZNW models is uncovered. They give rise, via the Poisson-Lie $T$-duality, to a rich structure of the dual pairs of $D$-branes configurations in group manifolds. The $D$-branes are characterized by their shapes and certain two-forms living on them. The WZNW path integral for the interacting $D$-branes diagrams is unambiguously defined if the two-form on the $D$-brane and the WZNW three-form on the group form an integer-valued cocycle in the relative singular cohomology of the group manifold with respect to its $D$-brane submanifold. An example …
Starting from the usual bosonic membrane action, we develop the geometry suitable for the description of $p$-brane backgrounds. Using the tools of generalized geometry we derive the generalization of string open-closed relations. Nambu-Poisson structures are used to generalize the concept of semiclassical noncommutativity of $D$-branes governed by Poisson tensor. We naturally describe the correspondence of recently proposed commutative and noncommutative versions of an effective action for $p$-branes ending on a $p'$-brane. We calculate the power series expansion of the action in background in…
We show that there exists a cut-off version of Nambu-Poisson bracket which defines a finite dimensional Lie 3-algebra. The algebra still satisfies the fundamental identity and thus produces N=8 supersymmetric BLG type equation of motion for multiple M2 branes. By counting the number of the moduli and the degree of freedom, we derive an entropy formula which scales as N^{3/2} as expected for the multiple M2 branes.
It is shown that the dual of the double compactified D=11 Supermembrane and a suitable compactified D=10 Super 4D-brane with nontrivial wrapping on the target space may be formulated as noncommutative gauge theories. The Poisson bracket over the world-volume is intrinsically defined in terms of the minima of the hamiltonian of the theory, which may be expressed in terms of a non degenerate 2-form. A deformation of the Poisson bracket in terms of the Moyal brackets is then performed. A noncommutative gauge theory in terms of the Moyal star bracket is obtained. It is shown that all these theorie…
We apply canonical Poisson-Lie T-duality transformations to bosonic open string worldsheet boundary conditions, showing that the form of these conditions is invariant at the classical level, and therefore they are compatible with Poisson-Lie T-duality. In particular the conditions for conformal invariance are automatically preserved, rendering also the dual model conformal. The boundary conditions are defined in terms of a gluing matrix which encodes the properties of D-branes, and we derive the duality map for this matrix. We demonstrate explicitly the implications of this map for D-branes in…
We complete the study of the Poisson-Sigma model over Poisson-Lie groups. Firstly, we solve the models with targets $G$ and $G^*$ (the dual group of the Poisson-Lie group $G$) corresponding to a triangular $r$-matrix and show that the model over $G^*$ is always equivalent to BF-theory. Then, given an arbitrary $r$-matrix, we address the problem of finding D-branes preserving the duality between the models. We identify a broad class of dual branes which are subgroups of $G$ and $G^*$, but not necessarily Poisson-Lie subgroups. In particular, they are not coisotropic submanifolds in the general …
We first extend the notion of connection in the context of Courant algebroids to obtain a new characterization of generalized Kaehler geometry. We then establish a new notion of isomorphism between holomorphic Poisson manifolds, which is non-holomorphic in nature. Finally we show an equivalence between certain configurations of branes on Poisson varieties and generalized Kaehler structures, and use this to construct explicitly new families of generalized Kaehler structures on compact holomorphic Poisson manifolds equipped with positive Poisson line bundles (e.g. Fano manifolds). We end with so…
We derive the explicit form of the superpropagators in presence of general boundary conditions (coisotropic branes) for the Poisson Sigma Model. This generalizes the results presented in Cattaneo and Felder's previous works for the Kontsevich angle function used in the deformation quantization program of Poisson manifolds without branes or with at most two branes. The relevant superpropagators for n branes are defined as gauge fixed homotopy operators of a complex of differential forms on n sided polygons P_n with particular "alternating" boundary conditions. In presence of more than three bra…
It is shown that the generalized (with nonpolynomial Lagrangian) Chern-Simons membranes and in general $p$-branes moving in $D$-dimensional target space admit an infinite set of secondary constraints. With respect to the Poisson bracket these constraints satisfy closed algebra containing $p$-dimensional classical $W$ algebra as a subalgebra. In the case when the target space dimension $D$ is finite the theory is topological.
The properties of the D-brane fluctuations are investigated using the two types of deformation of the Dirac structure, based on the B-transformation and the beta-transformation, respectively. The former gives the standard gauge theory with 2-form field strength. The latter gives a non-standard gauge theory on the Poisson manifold with bivector field strength and the vector field as a gauge potential, where the gauge symmetry is a diffeomorphism generated by the Hamiltonian vector field. The map between the two gauge theories is also constructed with the help of Moser's Lemma and the Magnus exp…
General boundary conditions ("branes") for the Poisson sigma model are studied. They turn out to be labeled by coisotropic submanifolds of the given Poisson manifold. The role played by these boundary conditions both at the classical and at the perturbative quantum level is discussed. It turns out to be related at the classical level to the category of Poisson manifolds with dual pairs as morphisms and at the perturbative quantum level to the category of associative algebras (deforming algebras of functions on Poisson manifolds) with bimodules as morphisms. Possibly singular Poisson manifolds …
A set of consistent Poisson brackets for an open string in generic spacetime background and NS-NS $B$-field is constructed. Upon quantization, this set of Poisson brackets lead to spacial \emph{commutative} $D$-branes at the string ends, showing that noncommutativity between spacial coordinates on the $D$-branes can be avoided.
In this paper we propose a noncommutative generalization of the relationship between compact Kähler manifolds and complex projective algebraic varieties. Beginning with a prequantized Kähler structure, we use a holomorphic Poisson tensor to deform the underlying complex structure into a generalized complex structure, such that the prequantum line bundle and its tensor powers deform to a sequence of generalized complex branes. Taking homomorphisms between the resulting branes, we obtain a noncommutative deformation of the homogeneous coordinate ring. As a proof of concept, this is implemented f…
In analogy to Nambu's generalization of mechanics, we present a generalization of Poisson sigma models to higher dimensional world volumes. We find corresponding generalizations of string sigma models and open-closed string relations for background fields to the case of p-branes. As an application, we discuss a DBI-type effective action for open membranes.
The Chern-Simons membranes and in general the Chern-Simons p-branes moving in $D$-dimensional target space admit an infinite set of secondary constraints. With respect to the Poisson bracket these constraints form a closed algebra which contains classical \ $W_{1+\infty }$ \ algebra in $p$-dimensions as a subalgebra. Corresponding gauged theory in the phase-space is constructed in a Hamilton gauge as an analog of the ordinary $W$-gravity.
Motivated by the quest to understand the analog of non-geometric flux compactification in the context of M-theory, we study higher dimensional analogs of generalized Poisson sigma models and corresponding dual string and p-brane models. We find that higher generalizations of the algebraic structures due to Dorfman, Roytenberg and Courant play an important role and establish their relation to Nambu-Poisson structures.
We propose an effective action for a p'-brane with open p-branes ending on it. The action has dual descriptions similar to the commutative and non-commutative ones of the DBI action for D-branes and open strings. The Poisson structure governing the non-commutativity of the D-brane is replaced by a Nambu structure and the open-closed string relations are generalized to the case of p'-branes utilizing a novel Nambu sigma model description of p-branes. In the case of an M5-brane our action interpolates between M5-actions already proposed in the literature and matrix model like actions involving N…
We review the AKSZ construction as applied to the topological open membranes and Poisson sigma models. We describe a generalization to open topological p-branes and Nambu-Poisson sigma models.
In the paper "Constraint Quantization of Open String in Background $B$ field and Noncommutative D-brane", it is claimed that the boundary conditions lead to an infinite set of secondary constraints and Dirac brackets result in a non-commutative Poisson structure for D-brain. Here we show that contrary to the arguments in that paper, the set of secondary constraints on the boundary is finite and the non-commutativity algebra can not be obtained by evaluating the Dirac brackets.
In this paper we try to construct noncommutative Yang-Mills theory for generic Poisson manifolds. It turns out that the noncommutative differential calculus defined in an old work is exactly what we need. Using this calculus, we generalize results about the Seiberg-Witten map, the Dirac-Born-Infeld action, the matrix model and the open string quantization for constant B field to non-constant background with H=0.
We investigate the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model associated with the Nambu-Poisson algebra as a theory describing a single M5-brane. We argue that the model is a gauge theory associated with the volume-preserving diffeomorphism in the three-dimenisonal internal space. We derive gauge transformations, actions, supersymmetry transformations, and equations of motions in terms of six-dimensional fields. The equations of motions are written in gauge-covariant form, and the equations for tensor fields have manifest self-dual structure. We demonstrate that the double dimensional reduction of the mo…
We study the Poisson sigma model which can be viewed as a topological string theory. Mainly we concentrate our attention on the Poisson sigma model over a group manifold G with a Poisson-Lie structure. In this case the flat connection conditions arise naturally. The boundary conditions (D-branes) are studied in this model. It turns out that the D-branes are labelled by the coisotropic subgroups of G. We give a description of the moduli space of classical solutions over Riemann surfaces both without and with boundaries. Finally we comment briefly on the duality properties of the model.
Motivated by the recent proposal of an N=8 supersymmetric action for multiple M2-branes, we study the Lie 3-algebra in detail. In particular, we focus on the fundamental identity and the relation with Nambu-Poisson bracket. Some new algebras not known in the literature are found. Next we consider cubic matrix representations of Lie 3-algebras. We show how to obtain higher dimensional representations by tensor products for a generic 3-algebra. A criterion of reducibility is presented. We also discuss the application of Lie 3-algebra to the membrane physics, including the Basu-Harvey equation an…
