We report on the observation of vortex formation in a Bose-Einstein condensate of Rb-87 atoms. Vortices are generated by superimposing an oscillating excitation to the trapping potential introduced by an external magnetic field. For small amplitudes of the external excitation field we observe a bending of the cloud axis. Increasing the amplitude we observe formation of a growing number of vortices in the sample. Shot-to-shot variations in both vortex number and position within the condensed cloud are observed, probably due to the intrinsic vortex nucleation dynamics. We discuss the possible formation of vortices and anti-vortices in the sample as well as possible mechanisms for vortex nucleation.
We study the conservative dynamics and stationary configurations of a vortex-antivortex pair in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. We establish the conceptual framework for understanding the stationary states and the topological defect trajectories, through considerations of different mechanisms of vortex motion and the bifurcation of soliton-like stationary solutions. Our insights are based on Lagrangian-based variational calculations, numerical solutions of both the time-dependent and time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equations, and exact solutions for the non-i…
We perform numerical simulation of quantum turbulence at zero temperature generated by an oscillating sphere. In this simulation, we injected vortices on the sphere to generate turbulence. Although we prepare injected vortex loops of identical length, they are extended by the oscillating sphere to form a tangle through numerous reconnections. The resulting tangle around the sphere is anisotropic and affected by the oscillation. The vortex tangle continues to emit vortex loops, which leave the sphere. The statistics of emitted loops differ significantly from those of the original injected vorti…
Visualization using tracer particles is a relatively new tool available for the study of superfluid turbulence and flow, which is applied here to oscillating objects submerged in the liquid. We report observations of a structure seen in videos taken from outside a cryostat filled with superfluid helium at 2 K, which is possibly a vortex loop attached to an oscillator. The feature, which has the shape of an incomplete arch, is visualized due to the presence of solid H2 tracer particles and is attached to a beam oscillating at 38 Hz in the liquid. It has been recorded in videos taken at 240 fram…
We have theoretically studied vortex waves of Bose-Einstein condensates in elongated harmonic traps. Our focus is on the axisymmetric varicose waves and helical Kelvin waves of singly quantized vortex lines. Growth and decay dynamics of both types of vortex waves are discussed. We propose a method to experimentally create these vortex waves on demand.
We have theoretically investigated Kelvin waves of quantized vortex lines in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Counterrotating perturbation induces an elliptical instability to the initially straight vortex line, driven by a parametric resonance between a quadrupole mode and a pair of Kelvin modes of opposite momenta. Subsequently, Kelvin waves rapidly decay to longer wavelengths emitting sound waves in the process. We present a modified Kelvin wave dispersion relation for trapped superfluids and propose a simple method to excite Kelvin waves of specific wave number.
When two Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) collide with high collisional energy, the celebrated matter wave interference pattern results. For lower collisional energies the repulsive interaction energy becomes significant, and the interference pattern evolves into an array of grey solitons. The lowest collisional energy, producing a single pair of solitons, has not been probed. We use density engineering on the healing length scale to produce such a pair of solitons. These solitons then evolve periodically between vortex rings and solitons, which we image in-situ on the healing length scale. T…
In a numerical experiment based on Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, we demonstrate unique topological quantum coherence in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Exploring the fact that vortices in rotating BEC can be pinned by a geometric arrangement of laser beams, we show the parameter range in which vortex-antivortex molecules or multiquantum vortices are formed as a consequence of the optically imposed symmetry. Being low-energy states, we discuss the conditions for spontaneous nucleation of these unique molecules and their direct experimental observation, and provoke the potentia…
We calculate the critical rotation frequency at which a vortex state becomes energetically favorable over the vortex-free ground state in a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate whose atoms have dipole-dipole interactions as well as the usual s-wave contact interactions. In the Thomas-Fermi (hydrodynamic) regime, dipolar condensates in oblate cylindrical traps (with the dipoles aligned along the axis of symmetry of the trap) tend to have lower critical rotation frequencies than their purely s-wave contact interaction counterparts. The converse is true for dipolar condensates in prolate…
We consider a trapped Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) with a highly quantized vortex. For the BEC with a doubly, triply or quadruply quantized vortex, the numerical calculations have shown that the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations, which describe the fluctuation of the condensate, have complex eigenvalues. In this paper, we obtain the analytic expression of the condition for the existence of complex modes, using the method developed by Rossignoli and Kowalski [R. Rossignoli and A. M. Kowalski, Phys. Rev. A 72, 032101 (2005)] for the small coupling constant. To derive it, we make the two-mode ap…
We report observations of vortex formation as a result of merging together multiple $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a confining potential. In this experiment, a trapping potential is partitioned into three sections by a barrier, enabling the simultaneous formation of three independent, uncorrelated condensates. The three condensates then merge together into one BEC, either by removal of the barrier, or during the final stages of evaporative cooling if the barrier energy is low enough; both processes can naturally produce vortices within the trapped BEC. We interpret the vortex fo…
Reconnections between quantum vortex filaments in presence of trapped particles are investigated using numerical simulations of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation. Particles are described with classical degrees of freedom and modeled as highly repulsive potentials which deplete the superfluid. First, the case of a vortex dipole with a single particle trapped inside one of the vortices is studied. It is shown that the reconnection takes place at the position of the particle as a consequence of the symmetry breaking induced by it. The separation rate between the reconnecting points is compatible wit…
The onset of turbulent flow around an oscillating sphere is known to occur at a critical velocity vc ~ sqrt(kappa omega) where kappa is the circulation quantum and omega is the oscillation frequency. However, in a small interval of driving force amplitudes F (or corresponding velocity amplitudes of few percent above vc) the turbulent flow is found to be unstable. The flow pattern switches intermittently between potential flow and turbulence. The lifetimes of the turbulent phases have an exponential distribution and the mean lifetimes tau grow very rapidly with increasing driving force, namely …
The superfluid Reynolds number $Re_s = (v - v_c) \,D/ κ$ can be expressed simply by the number of vortex rings that are shed during a half-period of the oscillation.
A superfluid atomic Fermi system may support a giant vortex if the trapping potential is anharmonic. In such a potential, the single-particle spectrum has a positive curvature as a function of angular momentum. A tractable model is put up in which the lowest and next lowest Landau levels are occupied. Different parameter regimes are identified and characterized. Due to the dependence of the interaction on angular momentum quantum number, the Cooper pairing is at its strongest not only close to the Fermi level, but also close to the energy minimum. It is shown that the gas is superfluid in the …
Particles have been used for more than a decade to visualize and study the dynamics of quantum vortices in superfluid helium. In this work we study how the dynamics of a collection of particles set inside a vortex reflects the motion of the vortex. We use a self-consistent model based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation coupled with classical particle dynamics. We find that each particle oscillates with a natural frequency proportional to the number of vortices attached to it. We then study the dynamics of an array of particles trapped in a quantum vortex and use particle trajectories to measure …
An apparatus for producing atomic-gas Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of 87-Rb atoms is described. The apparatus produces 87-Rb BECs in a dual-chamber vacuum system that incorporates magnetic transport of trapped atoms from the magneto-optical trapping cell to the BEC production cell via the operation of a series of overlapping magnet coils. The design, construction, and operation of the apparatus are described in detail. The apparatus is used to study the creation of quantized vortices in BECs by the merging and interference of multiple trapped condensates. In this experiment, a single harmo…
We explore the possibility that the fast and exotic negative ions in superfluid helium are electrons bound to quantized vortex structures, the simplest being a ring. In the states we consider, the electron energy is only slightly below the conduction band minimum of bulk helium. To support our proposal we present two calculations. In the first, we show that the electron pressure on the vortex core is insufficient to cavitate the helium and form an electron bubble. In the second, we estimate the equilibrium radius of the vortex ring that would bind an electron and find it is much smaller than t…
Recent experiments on quantum turbulence in superfluid helium made use of small tracer particles to track the motion of quantized vortices, determine velocity statistics and visualize vortex reconnections. A problem with this visualization technique is that it may change the turbulent flow which it visualizes. To address this problem, we derive and solve the equations of motion of a quantized vortex ring which contains a given number of particles trapped on the vortex core, hence derive a quantitative criterion to determine in which measure small particles trapped in quantized vortices affect …
We present a theoretical study of vortices within a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in a rotating optical lattice. We find that proximity to the Mott insulating state dramatically effects the vortex structures. To illustrate we give examples in which the vortices: (i) all sit at a fixed distance from the center of the trap, forming a ring, or (ii) coalesce at the center of the trap, forming a giant vortex. We model time-of-flight expansion to demonstrate the experimental observability of our predictions.
We study the properties of the vortex state of a trapped Bose gas in the large-gas-parameter regime. To test validity of the Gross-Pitaevskii theory in this regime for the vortex states we compare the results of the Gross-Pitaevskii and the modified Gross-Pitaevskii calculations for the total energy, the chemical potential, the density profile and the frequency shift of the quadrupole modes of the collective oscillations of the condensate. We find that in the large-gas-parameter regime two calculations give substantially different results for all the properties mentioned above
Rotational states for trapped bosons in an optical lattice are studied in the framework of the Hubbard model. Critical frequencies are calculated and the main parameter regimes are identified. Transitions are observed from edge superfluids to vortex lattices with Mott insulating cores, and subsequently to lattices of interstitial vortices. The former transition coincides with the Mott transition. Changes in symmetry of the vortex lattices are observed as a function of lattice depth. Predictions for experimental signatures are presented.
