We have theoretically studied vortex waves of Bose-Einstein condensates in elongated harmonic traps. Our focus is on the axisymmetric varicose waves and helical Kelvin waves of singly quantized vortex lines. Growth and decay dynamics of both types of vortex waves are discussed. We propose a method to experimentally create these vortex waves on demand.
We investigate the temperature-dependent effective size of a trapped interacting atomic Bose gas within a mean field theory approximation. The sudden shrinking of the average length, as observed in an earlier experiment by Wang {\it et al.} [Chin. Phys. Lett. {\bf 20}, 799 (2003)], is shown to be a good indication for Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Our study also supports the use of the average width of a trapped Bose gas for a nondestructive calibration of its temperature.
We have theoretically investigated Kelvin waves of quantized vortex lines in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Counterrotating perturbation induces an elliptical instability to the initially straight vortex line, driven by a parametric resonance between a quadrupole mode and a pair of Kelvin modes of opposite momenta. Subsequently, Kelvin waves rapidly decay to longer wavelengths emitting sound waves in the process. We present a modified Kelvin wave dispersion relation for trapped superfluids and propose a simple method to excite Kelvin waves of specific wave number.
This report is based on my incomplete Phd thesis. The final part of the work on the 2D Yukawa bosons/vortices in a confined geometry is not complete and subject to futher development.
Magnetization dynamics of a half-quantum vortex in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with a ferromagnetic interaction are investigated by mean-field and Bogoliubov analyses. The transverse magnetization is shown to break the axisymmetry and form threefold domains. This phenomenon originates from the topological structure of the half-quantum vortex and spin conservation.
I discuss a Bogoliubov inequality for obtaining a rigorous bound on the maximal axial extension of inhomogeneous one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. An explicit upper limit for the aspect ratio of a strongly elongated, harmonically trapped Thomas-Fermi condensate is derived.
We study the formation and stability of a single vortex state in a weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate that is confined in a rotating harmonic potential. Our results are consistent with the fact that any single off-center vortex is unstable. Furthermore, a vortex state located at the center of the cloud first becomes locally stable as the rotational frequency increases. Finally our study implies the existence of hysteresis effects.
In a rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), the traditional triangular vortex lattice can be replaced by a rectangular vortex lattice or even a structure characterized in terms of vortex sheets, depending on the interspecies interactions. We study the dynamics of this system by analyzing the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum. Excitations familiar to BEC vortex systems are found such as Tkachenko modes, hydrodynamic modes and surface waves, however, the complex two-component morphology also gives rise to new phenomena including shear flow between vortex sheets.
We study vortex lattice structures of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in a rotating lattice potential by numerically solving the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By rotating the lattice potential, we observe the transition from the Abrikosov vortex lattice to the pinned lattice. We investigate the transition of the vortex lattice structure by changing conditions such as angular velocity, intensity, and lattice constant of the rotating lattice potential.
We study the nonlinear excitations of a vortex-line in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that the classical Euler dynamics of the vortex results in a description of the vortex line in terms of a (discrete) one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which allows for both bright and gray soliton solutions. We discuss these solutions in detail and predict that it is possible to create vortex-line solitons with current experimental capabilities.
Here we show, by performing ab initio classical field simulations that two distinct superfluid phases, separated by thermal vortex-antivortex pair creation, exist in experimentally producible quasi-2D Bose gas. These results resolve the debate on the nature of the low temperature phase(s) of a trapped interacting 2D Bose gas.
We study Bose-Einstein condensate of atomic Boson gases trapped in a composite potential of a harmonic potential and an optical lattice potential. We found a series of collective excitations that induces localized vortex oscillations with a characteristic wavelength. The oscillations might be observed experimentally when radial confinement is tight. We present the excitation spectra of the vortex oscillation modes and propose a way to experimentally excite the modes.
We study the vortex pinning effect in a Bose-Einstein Condensate in the presence of a rotating lattice potential by numerically solving the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We consider a triangular lattice potential created by blue-detuned laser beams. By rotating the lattice potential, we observe a transition from the Abrikosov vortex lattice to the pinned vortex lattice. We investigate the transition of the vortex lattice structure by changing conditions such as angular velocity, strength, and lattice constant of a rotating lattice potential. Our simulation results clearly show that…
We report the observation of vortex pinning in rotating gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). The vortices are pinned to columnar pinning sites created by a co-rotating optical lattice superimposed on the rotating BEC. We study the effects of two different types of optical lattice, triangular and square. With both geometries we see an orientation locking between the vortex and the optical lattices. At sufficient intensity the square optical lattice induces a structural cross-over in the vortex lattice.
We study the ground state properties of a trapped Bose condensate with a neutral impurity. By varying the strength of the attractive atom-impurity interactions the degree of localization of the impurity at the trap center can be controlled. As the impurity becomes more strongly localized the peak condensate density, which can be monitored experimentally, grows markedly. For strong enough attraction, the impurity can make the condensate unstable by strongly deforming the atom density in the neighborhood of the impurity. This "collapse" can possibly be investigated in bosenova-type experiments.
The response of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas to a periodic driving force is studied theoretically in the framework of the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The monopole mode is driven by periodical modulation of the frequency of the isotropic harmonic trapping potential. Period-doubled motion is shown to occur when the driving is strong and close to resonance with the monopole mode. A variational model predicts chaotic oscillations but is found to disagree with the full solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
We present simulation results of the vortex dynamics in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a rotating optical lattice. Changing the potential amplitude and the relative rotation frequency between the condensate and the optical lattice, we find a rich variety of dynamical phases of vortices. The onset of these different phases is described by the force balance of a driving force, a pinning force and vortex-vortex interactions. In particular, when the optical lattice rotates faster than the condensate, an incommensurate effect leads to a vortex liquid phase supported by the co…
We study collective spin oscillations in a spin-1 Bose gas above the Bose-Einstein transition temperature. Starting from the Heisenberg equation of motion, we derive a kinetic equation describing the dynamics of a thermal gas with the spin-1 degree of freedom. Applying the moment method to the kinetic equation, we study spin-wave collective modes with dipole symmetry. The dipole modes in the spin-1 system are found to be classified into the three type of modes. The frequency and damping rate are obtained as functions of the peak density. The damping rate is characterized by three relaxation ti…
In a numerical experiment based on Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, we demonstrate unique topological quantum coherence in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Exploring the fact that vortices in rotating BEC can be pinned by a geometric arrangement of laser beams, we show the parameter range in which vortex-antivortex molecules or multiquantum vortices are formed as a consequence of the optically imposed symmetry. Being low-energy states, we discuss the conditions for spontaneous nucleation of these unique molecules and their direct experimental observation, and provoke the potentia…
We present the experimental discovery of compound structures comprising solitons and vortex rings in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We examine both their creation via soliton-vortex collisions and their subsequent development, which is largely governed by the dynamics of interacting vortex rings. A theoretical model in three-dimensional (3D) cylindrical symmetry is also presented.
Numerical simulations of the interference of a three-way segmented nonrotating Bose-Einstein condensate reveal the production of a honeycomb vortex lattice containing significant numbers of vortices and antivortices. If confined within a trap, the lattice subsequently melts, exhibiting a rich assortment of vortex-antivortex interactions. In contrast with nonlinear vortex production mechanisms previously described for Bose-Einstein condensates, the process here is shown to be primarily one of linear superposition, with initial vortex locations approximately described by a linear theory of wave …
The changes in characteristics of Bose condensation of ideal Bose gas due to an external generic power law potential $U=\sum_{i=1} ^d c_i |\frac{x_i}{a_i}|^{n_i}$ are studied carefully. Detailed calculation of Kim $et$ $al.$ (S. H. Kim, C. K. Kim and K. Nahm, J Phys. Condens. Matter 11 10269 (1999).) yielded the hierarchy of condensation transitions with changing fractional dimensionality. In this manuscript, some theorems regarding specific heat at constant volume $C_V$ are presented. Careful examination of these theorems reveal the existence of hidden hierarchy of the condensation transition…
We study the conservative dynamics and stationary configurations of a vortex-antivortex pair in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. We establish the conceptual framework for understanding the stationary states and the topological defect trajectories, through considerations of different mechanisms of vortex motion and the bifurcation of soliton-like stationary solutions. Our insights are based on Lagrangian-based variational calculations, numerical solutions of both the time-dependent and time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equations, and exact solutions for the non-i…
Reconnections between quantum vortex filaments in presence of trapped particles are investigated using numerical simulations of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation. Particles are described with classical degrees of freedom and modeled as highly repulsive potentials which deplete the superfluid. First, the case of a vortex dipole with a single particle trapped inside one of the vortices is studied. It is shown that the reconnection takes place at the position of the particle as a consequence of the symmetry breaking induced by it. The separation rate between the reconnecting points is compatible wit…
We find a novel topological defect in a spin-nematic superfluid theoretically. A quantized vortex spontaneously breaks its axisymmetry, leading to an elliptic vortex in nematic-spin Bose-Einstein condensates with small positive quadratic Zeeman effect. The new vortex is considered the Joukowski transform of a conventional vortex. Its oblateness grows when the Zeeman length exceeds the spin healing length. This structure is sustained by balancing the hydrodynamic potential and the elasticity of a soliton connecting two spin spots, which are observable by in situ magnetization imaging. The theor…
We show that a multiply-quantized vortex line core can be energetically stable in a harmonically trapped two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The structure, in which the condensate component with the vortex line is surrounded by the second component forming a vortex ring, can be identified as a particlelike Skyrmion with a multiply-quantized winding number, and closely resembles cosmic vortons.
We discuss the transition from a fully decoherent to a (quasi-)condensate regime in a harmonically trapped weakly interacting 1D Bose gas. By using analytic approaches and verifying them against exact numerical solutions, we find a characteristic crossover temperature and crossover atom number that depend on the interaction strength and the trap frequency. We then identify the conditions for observing either an interaction-induced crossover scenario or else a finite-size Bose-Einstein condensation phenomenon characteristic of an \textit{ideal} trapped 1D gas.
