According to unified schemes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), the central engine is surrounded by dusty, optically thick clouds in a toroidal structure. We have recently developed a formalism that for the first time takes proper account of the clumpy nature of the AGN torus. We now provide a detailed report of our findings in a two-paper series. Here we present our general formalism for radiative transfer in clumpy media and construct its building blocks for the AGN problem -- the source functions of individual dusty clouds heated by the AGN radiation field. We show that a fundamental difference from smooth density distributions is that in a clumpy medium, a large range of dust temperatures coexist at the same distance from the radiation central source. This distinct property explains the low dust temperatures found close to the nucleus of NGC1068 in 10 \mic interferometric observations. We find that irrespective of the overall geometry, a clumpy dust distribution shows only moderate variation in its spectral energy distribution, and the 10\mic\ absorption feature is never deep. Furthermore, the X-ray attenuating column density is widely scattered around the column density that characterizes the IR emission. All of these properties are characteristic of AGN observations. The assembly of clouds into AGN tori and comparison with observations is presented in the companion paper.
We discuss the question whether the matter in dusty tori around active galactic nuclei has a smooth or a clumpy structure. Nenkova, Ivezic & Elitzur (2002) have argued that the lack of emission feature in the SEDs of type 1 AGN galaxies combined with a clear absorption feature in type 2 AGN can be explained if the circumnuclear dust is distributed in discrete clumps. Our aim is to verify this. We use multi-dimensional radiative transfer models of smooth and clumpy tori, and compare the SEDs of equivalent smooth and clumpy models. We find that the 10 micron emission feature of the clumpy models…
Dusty tori around active galactic nuclei (AGNs) play an important role in the classification of Seyfert galaxies. Therefore, physical properties of dusty tori are of great interest. We briefly introduce three statistical studies investigating properties of dusty tori; 1) physical sizes of dusty tori based on water-vapor maser emission, 2) ionization condition of the inner wall of tori based on high-ionization emission lines, and 3) viewing angle toward dusty tori based on mid-infrared color.
We present 3-dimensional radiative transfer models for clumpy dust tori around AGN. Our method combines Monte Carlo simulations of individual dust clouds with the actual 3-dimensional distribution of clouds in the torus. The model has been applied to NIR and MIR photometric and interferometric observations of NGC 1068. For the first time, it is possible to simultaneously reproduce both photometric and interferometric observations in the NIR and MIR. We infer a luminosity L=2*10^45 erg/s and an inclination of i=70deg for NGC 1068 from our model.
Geometrical and physical properties of dusty tori of Seyfert nuclei probed by the water vapor maser emission at 22 GHz are discussed. We assume that the dusty torus has a simple cylindrical form and the maser emission can be detected only when we observe the torus from almost edge-on views. The observed low frequency of occurrence of the water vapor maser emission (less than 10 percent) suggests that the torus is a vertically thin cylinder whose outer radius between a few pc and ~ 10 pc. However, the observed masing regions are concentrated in the inner 1 pc regions of the torus. This property…
Tori of Active Galactic Nuclei are made up of a mixture of hot and cold gas, as well as dust. In order to protect the dust grains from destruction by the hot gas as well as by the energetic radiation of the accretion disk, the dust is often assumed to be distributed in clouds. In our new 3D model of AGN dust tori, the torus is modelled as a wedge-shaped disk in which dusty clouds are randomly distributed, by taking the dust density distribution of the corresponding continuous model into account. We especially concentrate on the differences between clumpy and continuous models in terms of the t…
We present analytical approximations for calculating the scattering, absorption and escape of nonionizing photons from a spherically symmetric two-phase clumpy medium, with either a central point source of isotropic radiation, a uniform distribution of isotropic emitters, or uniformly illuminated by external sources. The analytical approximations are based on the mega-grains model of two-phase clumpy media, as proposed by Hobson & Padman, combined with escape and absorption probability formulae for homogeneous media. The accuracy of the approximations is examined by comparison with 3D Monte Ca…
A Monte Carlo model of radiative transfer in multi-phase dusty media is applied to the situation of stars and clumpy dust in a sphere or a disk. The distribution of escaping and absorbed photons are shown for various filling factors and densities. Analytical methods of approximating the escaping fraction of radiation, based on the Mega-Grains approach, are discussed. Comparison with the Monte Carlo results shows that the escape probability formulae provide a reasonable approximation of the escaping/absorbed fractions, for a wide range of parameters characterizing a clumpy dusty medium. A possi…
Recent observations of NGC 1068 and other AGN support the idea of a geometrically and optically thick dust torus surrounding the central supermassive black hole and accretion disk of AGN. In type 2 AGN, the torus is seen roughly edge-on, leading to obscuration of the central radiation source and a silicate absorption feature near 10 micron. While most of the current torus models distribute the dust smoothly, there is growing evidence that the dust must be arranged in clouds. We describe a new method for modeling near- and mid-infrared emission of 3-dimensional clumpy tori using Monte Carlo sim…
The emission-line flux ratio of [O III]4363/[O III]5007 is a useful diagnostic for the ionization mechanism and physical properties of narrow-line regions in active galactic nuclei. However, it is known that simple photoionization models underpredict this ratio. In this contribution, we report on some pieces of evidence that a large fraction of the [O III]4363 emission arises from the dense gas, which can be obscured by dusty tori. Taking this dense component into account, we show that the flux ratio of [O III]4363/[O III]5007 can be explained by two-component photoionization models.
Deep surveys of {\em Chandra} and {\em HST} (Hubble Space Telescope) show that active galactic nucleus (AGN) populations are changing with hard X-ray luminosities. This arises an interesting question whether the dusty torus is evolving with the central engines. We assemble a sample of 50 radio-quiet PG quasars to tackle this problem. The covering factors of the dusty tori can be estimated from the multiwavelength continuum. We find they are strongly correlated with the hard X-ray luminosity. Interestingly this correlation agrees with the fraction of type II AGNs discovered by {\em Chandra} and…
A cornerstone of AGN unification schemes is the presence of an optically and geometrically thick dust torus. It provides the obscuration to explain the difference between type 1 and type 2 AGN. We investigate the influence of the dust distribution on the Eddington limit of the torus. For smooth dust distributions, the Eddingtion limit on the dust alone is 5 orders of magnitudes below the limit for electron scattering in a fully ionized plasma, while a clumpy dust torus has an Eddington limit slightly larger than the classical one. We study the behaviour of a clumpy torus at low and high AGN lu…
We investigate the attenuation law seen through an interstellar medium (ISM) with clumpy spatial distributions of stars and dust. The clumpiness of the dust distribution is introduced by a multi-phase ISM model. We solve a set of radiative transfer equations with multiple anisotropic scatterings through the clumpy ISM in a 1-D plane-parallel geometry by using the mega-grain approximation, in which dusty clumps are regarded as very large particles (i.e. mega-grains). The clumpiness of the stellar distribution is introduced by the youngest stars embedded in the clumps. We assume a smooth spatial…
We present mid-IR spectro-interferometry of the Seyfert type 1 nucleus of NGC 3783. The dusty circumnuclear environment is spatially resolved and the wavelength dependence of the compact emission is discussed. The observations were carried out with the MIDI instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer in the N-band. Spectra and visibilities were derived with a spectral resolution of 30 in the wavelength range from 8 to 13 micron. For the interpretation we developed a simple dusty disk model with small and variable covering factor. At baselines of 65 and 69 m, visibilities in the range…
Unified schemes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) require an obscuring dusty torus around the central engine. The compact sizes (only a few pc) determined in recent high-resolution observations require that the obscuring matter be clumpy and located inside the region where the black-hole gravity dominates over the galactic bulge. This location is in line with the scenario depicting the torus as the region of the clumpy wind coming off the accretion disk in which the clouds are dusty and optically thick. We study here the outflow scenario within the framework of hydromagnetic disk winds, incorpor…
We derive the properties of dusty tori in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) from the comparison of observed Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of SDSS quasars and a precomputed grid of torus models. The observed SEDs comprise SDSS photometry, 2MASS J, H, and K data, whenever available and mid-Infrared (MIR) data from the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic (SWIRE) Survey. The adopted model is that of Fritz et al., 2006. The fit is performed by standard chi^2 minimisation, the model however can be multi-component comprising a stellar and a starburst components, whenever necessary. Models with…
From extensive radiative transfer calculations we find that clumpy torus models with \No \about 5--15 dusty clouds along radial equatorial rays successfully explain AGN infrared observations. The dust has standard Galactic composition, with individual cloud optical depth \tV \about 30--100 at visual. The models naturally explain the observed behavior of the 10\mic silicate feature, in particular the lack of deep absorption features in AGN of any type. The weak 10\mic emission feature tentatively detected in type 2 QSO can be reproduced if in these sources \No drops to \about 2 or \tV exceeds \…
Unified schemes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) require an obscuring dusty torus around the central engine. Torus sizes of hundreds of parsecs were deduced from early theoretical modeling efforts, but high-resolution IR observations now show that the torus size is no more than a few parsecs. This conflict is resolved when the clumpy nature of the torus is taken into account. The compact torus may be best understood when identified with the dusty, optically thick region of the wind coming off the central accretion disk.
We present Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations for spiral galaxies modelled as a stellar disk and a two-phase clumpy dust distribution. We divide the volume occupied by the dust into a three-dimensional grid and assign each cell a clump or smooth medium status. Cell dimension, clump dust mass and spatial distribution are derived from the observed properties of Giant Molecular Clouds and molecular gas in the Galaxy. We produce models for several values of the optical depth and fraction of the interstellar medium residing in clumps. As a general result, clumpy models are less opaque than …
We determine the properties of the stellar torus that we showed in a previous paper to result as a product of two merging black holes. If the surrounding stellar cluster is as massive as the binary black hole, the torque acting on the stars ejects a fraction which extracts all the binary's angular momentum on scales of ~10^7 yr, and a geometrically thick torus remains. In the present article we show that a certain fraction of the stars has winds, shaped into elongated tails by the central radiation pressure, which are optically thick for line of sights aligned with them. These stars are suffic…
AIMS: I present the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code TRADING (Transfer of RAdiation through Dust In Galaxies). The code computes self-consistently the extinction of radiation in a dusty medium (including absorption and scattering) and the dust emission. METHODS: A binary-tree adaptive grid is used for the description of the dust distribution. Dust radiation is computed at thermal equilibrium or under stochastic heating condition, for a distribution of grains of different radii and materials. The code is applied to the case of a clumpy galactic disk, including both diffuse dust and a distrib…
We examine the dust properties of a nearby distance-limited sample of early type galaxies using the WFPC2 of the Hubble Space Telescope. Dust is detected in 29 out of 67 galaxies (43%), including 12 with small nuclear dusty disks. In a separate sample of 40 galaxies biased for the detection of dust by virtue of their detection in the IRAS 100 micron band, dust is found in ~78% of the galaxies, 15 of which contain dusty disks. In those galaxies with detectable dust, the apparent mass of the dust correlates with radio and far infrared luminosity, becoming more significant for systems with filame…
Two families of models of dusty tori in AGNs (moderately thick and extended versus very thick and compact) are tested against available observations. The confrontation suggests that the former class better explains the IR broad-band spectra of both broad and narrow line AGNs, the anisotropy of the emission deduced by comparing IR properties of Seyfert 1 and 2 nuclei, the results of IR spectroscopy and those of high spatial resolution observations. There is however clear evidence for a broad distribution of optical depths. We also examine the relationship between IR and X-ray emission. The data…
Context: We investigate mid-infrared and X-ray properties of the dusty torus invoked in the unification scenario for active galactic nuclei. Aims: We use the relation between mid IR and hard X-ray luminosities to constrain the geometry and physical state of the dusty torus. Methods: We present new VISIR observations of 17 nearby AGN and combine these with our earlier VISIR sample of 8 Seyfert galaxies. Combining these observations with X-ray data from the literature we study the correlation between their mid IR and hard X-ray luminosities. Results: A statistically highly significant correlatio…
Dusty tori have been suggested to play a crucial role in determining the physical characteristics of active galactic nuclei (AGN), but investigation of their properties has stalled for lack of high resolution mid-IR imaging. Recently, a long-awaited breakthrough in this field was achieved: NGC 1068, a nearby AGN, was the first extragalactic object to be observed with a mid-IR interferometer, thereby obtaining the needed angular resolution to study the alleged torus. In this proceeding, first the field of AGN research is briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on models of dusty tori. Second, the ge…
We present a study of the effects of clumping on the emergent spectral energy distribution (SED) from dusty supernova (SN) shells illuminated by a diffuse radiation source distributed throughout the medium. (...) The fully 3D radiation transport problem is solved using a Monte Carlo code, MOCASSIN, and we present a set of models aimed at investigating the sensitivity of the SEDs to various clumping parameters. We find that, contrary to the predictions of analytical prescriptions, the combination of an optical and IR observational data set is sufficient to constrain dust masses even in the case…
We present results of new Monte Carlo calculations made with the DIRTY code of radiative transfer of stellar and scattered radiation for a dusty giant late-type galaxy like the Milky Way, which illustrate the effect of the attenuation of stellar light by internal dust on the integrated photometry of the individual bulge and disk components. Here we focus on the behavior of the attenuation function, the color excess, and the fraction of light scattered or directly transmitted towards the outside observer as a function of the total amount of dust and the inclination of the galaxy, and the struct…
We re-address the classification criterion for extremely red galaxies (ERGs) of Pozzetti and Mannucci (2000 -- PM00), which aims to separate, in the Ic-K (or Rc-K) vs. J-K colour--colour diagram, passively evolving, old (> 1 Gyr) stellar populations in a dust-free environment, associated with ellipticals (Es), from dusty starburst galaxies (DSGs), both at 1 < z < 2. We explore a category of objects not considered previously, i.e., galaxies forming in this redshift range on short (0.1 Gyr) timescales and observed also in their early, dusty post-starburst phase. We also investigate the impact of…
We have thoroughly characterized the ultraviolet to near-infrared (0.15 - 2.2 micron) spectral energy distribution (SED) of the central parsec of the M33 nucleus through new infrared photometry and optical/near-infrared spectroscopy, combined with ultraviolet/optical observations from the literature and the HST archive. The SED shows evidence for a significant level of attenuation, which we model through a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code as a shell of clumpy Milky Way-type dust (tau_V ~ 2 +/- 1). The discovery of Milky Way-type dust (with a strong 2175 A bump) internal to the M33 nucleus i…
This work focuses on the properties of dusty tori in active galactic nuclei (AGN) derived from the comparison of SDSS type 1 quasars with mid-Infrared (MIR) counterparts and a new, detailed torus model. The infrared data were taken by the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic (SWIRE) Survey. Basic model parameters are constraint, such as the density law of the graphite and silicate grains, the torus size and its opening angle. A whole variety of optical depths is supported. The favoured models are those with decreasing density with distance from the centre, while there is no clear tendency …

We present a quantitative and relatively model-independent way to assess the radial structure of nearby AGN tori. These putative tori have been studied with long-baseline infrared (IR) interferometry, but the spatial scales probed are different for different objects. They are at various distances and also have different physical sizes which apparently scale with the luminosity of the central engine. Here we look at interferometric visibilities as a function of spatial scales normalized by the size of the inner torus radius R_in. This approximately eliminates luminosity and distance dependence …
We compare three different models of clumpy gas disk and show that the Circumnuclear Disk (CND) in the Galactic Center and a putative, geometrically thick, obscuring torus are best explained by a collisional model consisting of quasi-stable, self-gravitating clouds. Kinetic energy of clouds is gained by mass inflow and dissipated in cloud collisions. The collisions give rise to a viscosity in a spatially averaged gas dynamical picture, which connects them to angular momentum transport and mass inflow. It is found that CND and torus share the same gas physics in our description, where the mass …
Spatially resolving the innermost torus in AGN is one of the main goals of its high-spatial-resolution studies. This could be done in the near-IR observations of Type 1 AGNs where we see directly the hottest dust grains in the torus. We discuss two critical issues in such studies. Firstly, we examine the nuclear point sources in the HST/NICMOS images of nearby Type 1 AGNs, to evaluate the possible contribution from the central putative accretion disk. After a careful subtraction of host bulge flux, we show that near-IR colors of the point sources appear quite interpretable simply as a composit…
We discuss a clumpy model of obscuring dusty tori around AGN. Cloud-cloud collisions lead to an effective viscosity and a geometrically thick accretion disk, which has the required properties of a torus. Accretion in the combined gravitational potential of central black hole and stellar cluster generates free energy, which is dissipated in collisions, and maintains the thickness of the torus. A quantitative treatment for the torus in the prototypical Seyfert 2 nucleus of NGC 1068 together with a radiative transfer calculation for NIR re-emission from the torus is presented.
We present sub-millimeter and mid-infrared images of the circumstellar disk around the nearby F2V star eta Corvi. The disk is resolved at 850um with a size of ~100AU. At 450um the emission is found to be extended at all position angles, with significant elongation along a position angle of 130+-10deg; at the highest resolution (9.3") this emission is resolved into two peaks which are to within the uncertainties offset symmetrically from the star at 100AU projected separation. Modeling the appearance of emission from a narrow ring in the sub-mm images shows the observed structure cannot be caus…
We explore physically self-consistent models of dusty molecular tori in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with the goal of interpreting VLTI observations and fitting high resolution mid-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The input dust distribution is analytically calculated by assuming hydrostatic equilibrium between pressure forces - due to the turbulent motion of the gas clouds - and gravitational and centrifugal forces as a result of the contribution of the nuclear stellar distribution and the central black hole. For a fully three-dimensional treatment of the radiative transfer problem th…
We introduce a new, publicly available Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, STOKES, which has been developed to model polarization induced by scattering off free electrons and dust grains. It can be used in a wide range of astrophysical applications. Here, we apply it to model the polarization produced by the equatorial obscuring and scattering tori assumed to exist in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We present optical/UV modeling of dusty tori with a curved inner shape and for two different dust types: one composition reproduces extinction properties of our Galaxy, and the other is derived fro…
We describe a search for molecular absorption at millimetre wavelengths associated with dusty molecular tori in active galactic nuclei (AGN). The sample observed consists of 11 flat-spectrum radio sources known to have red optical to infra-red colours plus two steep-spectrum narrow-line radio galaxies. Spectra of the sources were obtained in the 3-, 2- and 1.3-millimetre bands at frequencies corresponding to common molecular transitions of CO, HCO+, HCN and CS at the AGN redshift. No absorptions were detected in any of the sources. We calculated upper limits to the column density in molecular …
