Since the discovery of high transition-temperature (Tc) superconductivity in copper oxides two decades ago, continuous efforts have been devoted to searching for similar phenomenon in other compounds. With the exception of MgB2 (Tc =39 K), however, Tc is generally far lower than desired. Recently, breakthrough has been made in a new class of oxypnictide compounds. Following the initial discovery of superconductivity in LaO1-x FxFeAs (Tc =26 K), Tc onset has been raised to 55 K in ReO1-xFxFeAs (Re: Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm). Meanwhile, unravelling the nature of the energy associated with the formation of current-carrying pairs (Cooper pairs), referred to as the superconducting energy gap, is the first and vital step towards understanding why the superconductivity occurs at such high temperature and is also important for finding superconductors with still higher Tc. Here we show that, on the basis of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in PrO0.89F0.11FeAs (Tc =45 K), the Cooper pair is in the spin-singlet state (two spins are anti-paralleled), with two energy gaps opening below Tc. The results strongly suggest the existence of nodes (zeros) in the gap. None of superconductors known to date has such unique gap features, although copper-oxides and MgB2 share part of them.
In the present paper, we propose the parity even, orbital singlet and spin triplet pairing state as the ground state of the newly discovered super-conductor $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$.The pairing mechanism involves both the special shape of the electron fermi surface and the strong ferromagnetic fluctuation induced by Hund's rule coupling. The special behavior of the Bogoliubov quasi-particle spectrum may leads to "Fermi arc" like anisotropy super-conducting gap, which can be detected by angle resolved photo emission(ARPES).The impurity effects are also discussed.
We present $^{57}$Fe-NMR measurements of the novel normal and superconducting-state characteristics of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 38 K). In the normal state, the measured Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $(1/T_1)$ demonstrate the development of wave-number ($q$)-dependent spin fluctuations, except at $q$ = 0, which may originate from the nesting across the disconnected Fermi surfaces. In the superconducting state, the spin component in the $^{57}$Fe-Knight shift decreases to almost zero at low temperatures, evidencing a spin-s…
We study spin-half fermions in a one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain at low filling. We identify three triplet and one singlet pairing channels in the system, which are independently tunable as a function of nearest-neighbor charge and spin interactions. In a large-size system with translational invariance, we derive gap equations for the corresponding pairing gaps and obtain a Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian with its non-trivial topology determined by the interplay of these gaps. In an open-end system with a fixed number of particles, we compute the exact many-body ground state and identi…
We study a quantum dot Josephson junction inside an Aharonov-Bohm environment. The geometry is modeled by an Anderson impurity coupled to two directly-linked BCS leads. We illustrate that the well-established picture of the low-energy physics being governed by an interplay of two distinct (singlet and doublet) phases is still valid for this interferometric setup. The phase boundary depends, however, non-monotonically on the coupling strength between the superconductors, causing the system to exhibit re-entrance behavior and multiple phase transitions. We compute the zero-temperature Josephson …
We address the quantum-critical behavior of a two-dimensional itinerant ferromagnetic systems described by a spin-fermion model in which fermions interact with close to critical bosonic modes. We consider Heisenberg ferromagnets, Ising ferromagnets, and the Ising nematic transition. Mean-field theory close to the quantum critical point predicts a superconducting gap with spin-triplet symmetry for the ferromagnetic systems and a singlet gap for the nematic scenario. Studying fluctuations in this ordered phase using a nonlinear sigma model, we find that these fluctuations are not suppressed by a…
Using the numerical unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach, we study the ground state of a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. We observe the competition of a $(0, π)$ mode spin-density wave and the superconductivity as the doping concentration changes. There might be a small region in the electron-doping side where the magnetism and superconductivity coexist. The superconducting pairing is found to be spin singlet, orbital even, and mixed s$_{xy}$ + d$_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ wave (even parity).
This article reviews the NMR and NQR studies on iron-based high-temperature superconductors by the IOP/Okayama group. It was found that the electron pairs in the superconducting state are in the spin-singlet state with multiple fully-opened energy gaps. The antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the normal state are found to be closely correlated with the superconductivity. Also the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic in the spin space, which is different from the case in copper oxide superconductors. This anisotropy originates from the spin-orbit coupling and is an important r…
We use group theory to classify the superconducting states of systems with two orbitals on a tetragonal lattice. The orbital part of the superconducting gap function can be either symmetric or anti-symmetric. For the orbital symmetric state, the parity is even for spin singlet and odd for spin triplet; for the orbital anti-symmetric state, the parity is odd for spin singlet and even for spin triplet. The gap basis functions are obtained with the use of the group chain scheme by taking into account the spin-orbit coupling. In the weak pairing limit, the orbital anti-symmetric state is only stab…
We present the c-axis optical reflectance measurement on single crystals of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and SrFe$_2$As$_2$, the parent compounds of FeAs based superconductors. Different from the ab-plane optical response where two distinct energy gaps were observed in the SDW state, only the smaller energy gap could be seen clearly for \textbf{E}$\parallel$c-axis. The very pronounced energy gap structure seen at a higher energy scale for \textbf{E}$\parallel$ab-plane is almost invisible. We propose a novel picture for the band structure evolution across the SDW transition and suggest different driving mech…
Odd-frequency superconductivity describes a class of superconducting states where the superconducting gap is an odd function in relative time and Matsubara frequency. We present a group theoretical analysis based on the linearized gap equation in terms of Shubnikov groups of the second kind. By discussing systems with spin-orbit coupling and an interaction kernel which is symmetric under the reversal of relative time, we show that both even- and odd-frequency gaps are allowed to occur. Specific examples are discussed for the square lattice, the octahedral lattice, and the tetragonal lattice. F…
We report the first ^{75}As-NMR study on a single crystal of the hole-doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ba_{0.7}K_{0.3}Fe_2As_{2} (T_c = 31.5 K). We find that the Fe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic and are weaker compared to underdoped copper-oxides or cobalt-oxide superconductors. The spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases below T_c with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures, which is indicative of multiple superconducting gaps, as in the electron-doped Pr(La)FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$. Furthermore, no evidence was obtained for a microscopi…
We report a detailed investigation on the lower critical field $H_{c1}$ of the superconducting Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (FeAs-122) single crystals. A pronounced kink is observed on the $H_{c1}(T)$ curve, which is attributed to the existence of two superconducting gaps. By fitting the data $H_{c1}(T)$ to the two-gap BCS model in full temperature region, a small gap of $Δ_a(0)=2.0\pm 0.3$ meV and a large gap of $Δ_b(0)=8.9\pm 0.4$ meV are obtained. The in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}(0)$ is estimated to be 105 nm corresponding to a rather large superfluid density, which points to the b…
We have performed 75As Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements on aligned powders of the new LaO0.9F0.1FeAs superconductor. In the normal state, we find a strong temperature dependence of the spin shift and Korringa behavior of the spin lattice relaxation rate. In the superconducting state, we find evidence for line nodes in the superconducting gap and spin-singlet pairing. Our measurements reveal a strong anisotropy of the spin lattice relaxation rate, which suggest that superconducting vortices contribute to the relaxation rate when the field is parallel to the c-axis but not for the p…
The rich variety of iron-based superconductors and their complex electronic structure lead to a wide range of possibilities for gap symmetry and pairing components. Here we solve in the 2-Fe Brillouin zone the full frequency-dependent linearized Eliashberg equations for LiFeAs with spin-fluctuation mediated pairing interactions. The magnetic excitations are calculated with the random phase approximation on a correlated electronic structure obtained with density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory. Correlations induce long-lived local moments with orbital-dependent dynamics. The i…
We propose a model for a superconductor where both spin-singlet and chiral triplet pairing amplitudes can coexist. By solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with a general pair potential that accounts for both spin states we study experimental signatures of normal metal and superconductor hybrids. The interplay between the spin-singlet and triplet correlations manifests in the appearance of two effective gaps. When the amplitude of the spin-triplet component is stronger than that of the spin-singlet, a topological phase transition into a non-trivial regime occurs. As a result, the normal m…
We report results of inelastic-neutron-scattering measurements of low-energy spin-wave excitations in two structurally distinct families of iron-pnictide parent compounds: Na(1-δ)FeAs and BaFe2As2. Despite their very different values of the ordered magnetic moment and Néel temperatures, T_N, in the antiferromagnetic state both compounds exhibit similar spin gaps of the order of 10 meV at the magnetic Brillouin-zone center. The gap opens sharply below T_N, with no signatures of a precursor gap at temperatures between the orthorhombic and magnetic phase transitions in Na(1-δ)FeAs. We also find a…
Strong-coupling approach to temperature dependence of competing orders of superconductivity: Possible time-reversal symmetry breaking and nontrivial topology
We study the Josephson effect in a triplet superconductor--ferromagnet--singlet superconductor junction. We show that the interaction of tunneling Cooper pairs with the interface magnetization can permit a Josephson current at the lowest order of a tunneling Hamiltonian perturbation theory. Two conditions must be satisfied for this to occur: the magnetization of the ferromagnet has a component parallel to the ${\bf d}$-vector of the triplet superconductor, and the gaps of the superconductors have the same parity with respect to the interface momentum. The resulting charge current displays an u…
The three-band model relevant to high temperature copper-oxide superconductors is solved using single-site dynamical mean field theory and a tight-binding parametrization of the copper and oxygen bands. For a band filling of one hole per unit cell the metal/charge-transfer-insulator phase diagram is determined. The electron spectral function, optical conductivity and quasiparticle mass enhancement are computed as functions of electron and hole doping for parameters such that the corresponding to the paramagnetic metal and charge-transfer insulator sides of the one hole per cell phase diagram. …
We study theoretically the surface of time-reversal-symmetric, noncentrosymmetric superconductor with mixed singlet and triplet order parameters. A pair of counterpropagating subgap quasiparticle surface bound states with opposite spin projections are obtained in the nontrivial Z$_2$ case where the triplet component is larger than the singlet one, contributing to a spin current. In contrast to the pure p-wave cases, these subgap states do not have a fixed spin projections but depend on the momenta along the surface. In the trivial Z$_2$ case where the singlet order parameter is larger, no subg…
We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance studies on a very clean hole-doped single-crystal Ba$_{0.68}$K$_{0.32}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{\rm {c}}=38.5$ K). The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ shows an exponential decrease below $T \simeq 0.45 T_{\rm c}$ down to $T \simeq 0.11 T_{\rm c}$, which indicates a fully opened energy gap. From the ratio $(T_{1})_{c} / (T_{1})_{a}$, where $a$ and $c$ denote the crystal directions, we find that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation is anisotropic in the spin space above $T_{\rm c}$. The anisotropy decreases below $T_{\rm c}$ and disappears at …
Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has been under intensive scrutiny over the past years after new NMR measurements unveiled that the superconducting state might be a spin singlet. One of the best order parameter candidates in light of these new experiments is a chiral d-wave state with $d_{xz}+id_{yz}$ symmetry. This order parameter has been overlooked given the strong two-dimensional character of the normal state electronic structure. Recently, a phenomenological proposal based on local interactions with a three-dimensional electronic structure showed that a chiral d-wave state can be stable in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ onc…
The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of overdoped FeAs-based superconductor BaFe$_{1.73}$Co$_{0.27}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 8.1 K) single crystal was measured down to 80 mK. In zero field, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible, suggesting a nodeless superconducting gap in the $ab$-plane. In magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly, very different from that of conventional s-wave superconductors. This anomalous $κ_0/T(H)$ may reveal an exotic superconducting gap structure in overdoped BaFe$_{1.73}$Co$_{0.27}$As$_2$: the vanishing hole ($β$) pocket has a much larger gap than the electron ($γ$…
The in-plane resistivity $ρ$ and thermal conductivity $κ$ of FeAs-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal were measured down to 50 mK. We observe non-Fermi-liquid behavior $ρ(T) \sim T^{1.5}$ at $H_{c_2}$ = 5 T, and the development of a Fermi liquid state with $ρ(T) \sim T^2$ when further increasing field. This suggests a field-induced quantum critical point, occurring at the superconducting upper critical field $H_{c_2}$. In zero field there is a large residual linear term $κ_0/T$, and the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ mimics that in d-wave cuprate superconductors. This indicates that…
We present the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations of an $sπ$ pairing state of two band superconductivity as a model for the FeAs superconductors. The $sπ$ state is an s-wave pairing state with an internal $π$ phase, that is, nodeless gaps on each band but with the opposite sign. The novel features of this state are investigated by calculating the local density of states of the $π$ phase superconductor/normal metal bilayers. Because of the sign reversal between the two condensates, the zero bias conductance peak appears as observed in tunneling spectroscopy experiments on FeAs su…
The Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit normally places stringent conditions on the magnitude of the magnetic field that can coexist with spin-singlet superconductivity, restricting the critical induced Zeeman shift to a fraction of the superconducting gap. Here, we consider a model system where the spin-singlet Cooper pairing in a dispersive band crossing the Fermi level is boosted by an additional flat-band located away from the Fermi level. The boosting of the pairing in the dispersive band allows for nontrivial solutions to the coupled gap equations for spin-splitting fields considerably larger t…

The close interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in several quantum materials can lead to the appearance of an unusual thermodynamic state in which both orders coexist microscopically, despite their competing nature. A hallmark of this coexistence state is the emergence of a spin-triplet superconducting gap component, called $π$-triplet, which is spatially modulated by the antiferromagnetic wave-vector, reminiscent of a pair-density wave. In this paper, we investigate the impact of these $π$-triplet degrees of freedom on the phase diagram of a system with competing antiferr…
We show that all the singlet even-frequency, singlet odd-frequency, triplet even-frequency and triplet odd-frequency pairings, and together with the corresponding order parameters (gaps) can be realized in InSb (110) spin-orbit-coupled quantum well in proximity to s-wave superconductor in Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase or with a supercurrent. It is revealed that with the singlet even-frequency order parameter induced by the proximity effect, triplet even-frequency pairing is induced due to the broken spin-rotational symmetry by the spin-orbit coupling. Since the translational symmetry …
We report the $^{75}$As-NQR and NMR studies on the iron arsenide superconductor Li$_{x}$FeAs with $T_{\rm c} \sim 17$ K. The spin lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_{1}$, decreases below $T_{\rm c}$ without a coherence peak, and can be fitted by gaps with s$^{\pm}$-wave symmetry in the presence of impurity scattering. In the normal state, both $1/T_{1}T$ and the Knight shift decrease with decreasing temperature but become constant below $T \leq 50 K$. Estimate of the Korringa ratio shows that the spin correlations are weaker than that in other families of iron arsenides, which may account for the l…
Interfacial phonons between iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) and perovskite substrates have received considerable attention due to the possibility of enhancing preexisting superconductivity. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we studied the correlation between superconductivity and e-ph interaction with interfacial-phonons in an iron-based superconductor Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs ($T_c \approx$ 33 K) made of alternating FeSC and oxide layers. The quasiparticle interference measurement over regions with systematically different average superconducting gaps due to the e-ph coupling locally modulate…
Current-voltage characteristics and dynamic conductance of the superconductor - constriction - superconductor junctions in GdO(F)FeAs polycrystalline samples with critical temperatures Tc^local = 46 - 53 K were investigated. Two superconducting gaps, the large Delta_L = 10.5 +- 2 meV, and the small one Delta_S = 2.3 +- 0.4 meV were clearly observed at T = 4.2 K. The 2Delta_L/kTc^local = 5.5 +- 1 ratio gives support to the strong coupling mechanism which is responsible for the high Tc value. Temperature dependence of the large gap Delta_L(T) indicates the presence of intrinsic proximity effect …
By interpreting various experimental data for the new high temperature FeAs type superconductors in terms of lattice mediated multi gap superconductivity, it is shown that these systems strongly resemble MgB2, however, with the distinction that local polaronic lattice effects exist. This fact establishes a connection to cuprate high temperature superconductors where polaron formation is essential for the pseudogap phase and the unconventional isotope effects observed there. However, similar to MgB2 and in contrast to cuprates the two superconducting gaps in the Fe-As based materials are isotro…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is performed on single crystals of the single-layer high-Tc superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6+d) at optimal doping (x=0.4) in order to study in great detail the Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet band at the Fermi level. Besides the high crystal quality the advantages of a single-layer material are the absence of bilayer effects and the distinct reduction of thermal broadening. Due to the high energy and angle resolution and, most important, due to the controlled variation of the polarization vector of the synchrotron radiation the emission from the ZR single…
Superconductivity is commonly destroyed by a magnetic field due to orbital or Zeeman-induced pair breaking. Surprisingly, the spin-valley locking in a two-dimensional superconductor with spin-orbit interaction makes the superconducting state resilient to large magnetic fields. We investigate the spectral properties of such an Ising superconductor in a magnetic field taking into account disorder. The interplay of the in-plane magnetic field and the Ising spin-orbit coupling leads to noncollinear effective fields. We find that the emerging singlet and triplet pairing correlations manifest themse…
Cooper pairing and Coulomb repulsion are antagonists, producing distinct energy gaps in superconductors and Mott insulators. When a superconductor exchanges unpaired electrons with a quantum dot, its gap is populated by a pair of electron-hole symmetric Yu-Shiba-Rusinov excitations between doublet and singlet many-body states. The fate of these excitations in the presence of a strong Coulomb repulsion in the superconductor is unknown, but of importance in applications such as topological superconducting qubits and multi-channel impurity models. Here we couple a quantum dot to a superconducting…
