This paper gives an overview of recent results concerning the long time dynamics of repeated interaction quantum systems in a deterministic and random framework. We describe the non equilibrium steady states (NESS) such systems display and we present, as a macroscopic consequence, a second law of thermodynamics these NESS give rise to. We also explain in some details the analysis of products of certain random matrices underlying this dynamical problem.

Repeated Quantum Interactions and Unitary Random Walks

Among the discrete evolution equations describing a quantum system $\rH_S$ undergoing repeated quantum interactions with a chain of exterior systems, we study and characterize those which are directed by classical random variables in $\RR^N$. The characterization we obtain is entirely algebraical in terms of the unitary operator driving the elementary interaction. We show that the solutions of these equations are then random walks on the group $U(\rH_0)$ of unitary operators on $\rH_0$.

Linear response theory and entropic fluctuations in repeated interaction quantum systems

We study Linear Response Theory and Entropic Fluctuations of finite dimensional non-equilibrium repeated interaction systems (RIS). More precisely, in a situation where the temperatures of the probes can take a finite number of different values, we prove analogs of the Green-Kubo fluctuation-dissipation formula and Onsager reciprocity relations on energy flux observables. Random repeated interaction quantum systems

We consider a quantum system S interacting sequentially with independent systems E_m, m=1,2,... Before interacting, each E_m is in a possibly random state, and each interaction is characterized by an interaction time and an interaction operator, both possibly random. We prove that any initial state converges to an asymptotic state almost surely in the ergodic mean, provided the couplings satisfy a mild effectiveness condition. Infinite Products of Random Matrices and Repeated Interaction Dynamics

Let $Ψ_n$ be a product of $n$ independent, identically distributed random matrices $M$, with the properties that $Ψ_n$ is bounded in $n$, and that $M$ has a deterministic (constant) invariant vector. Quasi-deterministic properties of random Gaussian fields constrained by a large quadratic form

Completing the study initiated by Mounaix and Collet [J. Stat. Phys. {\bf 143}, 139-147 (2011)], we investigate the realizations of a Gaussian random field in the limit where a given (general) quadratic form of the field is large. Concentration in $L^2$ and in probability is proved under mild conditions and the resulting quasi-deterministic behavior of the field is given. Asymmetry in repeated isotropic rotations

Random operators constitute fundamental building blocks of models of complex systems yet are far from fully understood. Here, we explain an asymmetry emerging upon repeating identical isotropic (uniformly random) operations. An Example of Intrinsic Randomness in Deterministic PDEs

A new mechanism leading to a random version of Burgers' equation is introduced: it is shown that the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process in discrete time (TASEP) can be understood as an intrinsically stochastic, non-entropic weak solution of Burgers' equation on $\mathbb{R}$. In this interpretation, the appearance of randomness in the Burgers' dynamics is caused by random additions of jumps to the solution, corresponding to the random effects in TASEP.

On the nodal lines of random and deterministic Laplace eigenfunctions

In the present survey we present some of the recent results concerning the geometry of nodal lines of random Gaussian eigenfunctions (in case of spectral degeneracies) or wavepackets and related issues. The most fundamental example, where the spectral degeneracy allows us to consider random eigenfunctions (i.e. endow the eigenspace with Gaussian probability measure), is the sphere, and the corresponding eigenspaces are the spaces of spherical harmonics; this model is the primary focus of the present survey. I argue that Bohmian mechanics (or any similar pilot-wave theory) cannot reasonably be claimed to be a deterministic theory. Deterministic Walks in Quenched Random Environments of Chaotic Maps

This paper concerns the propagation of particles through a quenched random medium. In the one- and two-dimensional models considered, the local dynamics is given by expanding circle maps and hyperbolic toral automorphisms, respectively. The particle motion in both models is chaotic and found to fluctuate about a linear drift. An invitation to trees of finite cone type: random and deterministic operators

Trees of finite cone type have appeared in various contexts. In particular, they come up as simplified models of regular tessellations of the hyperbolic plane. The spectral theory of the associated Laplacians can thus be seen as induced by geometry. Polynuclear growth model, GOE$^2$ and random matrix with deterministic source

We present a random matrix interpretation of the distribution functions which have appeared in the study of the one-dimensional polynuclear growth (PNG) model with external sources.
