A new mechanism leading to a random version of Burgers' equation is introduced: it is shown that the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process in discrete time (TASEP) can be understood as an intrinsically stochastic, non-entropic weak solution of Burgers' equation on $\mathbb{R}$. In this interpretation, the appearance of randomness in the Burgers' dynamics is caused by random additions of jumps to the solution, corresponding to the random effects in TASEP.
We study the long time behavior of the solution of a stochastic PDEs with random coefficients assuming that randomness arises in a different independent scale. We apply the obtained results to 2D- Navier--Stokes equations.
We focus on a class of BSDEs driven by a cadlag martingale and corresponding Markov type BSDE which arise when the randomness of the driver appears through a Markov process. To those BSDEs we associate a deterministic problem which, when the Markov process is a Brownian diffusion, is nothing else but a parabolic type PDE. The solution of the deterministic problem is intended as decoupled mild solution, and it is formulated with the help of a time-inhomogeneous semigroup.
In this paper we develop the $l_p$-theory of space-time stochastic difference equations which can be considered as a discrete counterpart of N.V. Krylov's $L_p$-theory of stochastic partial differential equations. We also prove a Calderon-Zygmund type estimate for deterministic parabolic finite difference schemes with variable coefficients under relaxed assumptions on the coefficients, the initial data and the forcing term.
Partial differential equations with random inputs have become popular models to characterize physical systems with uncertainty coming from, e.g., imprecise measurement and intrinsic randomness. In this paper, we perform asymptotic rare event analysis for such elliptic PDEs with random inputs. In particular, we consider the asymptotic regime that the noise level converges to zero suggesting that the system uncertainty is low, but does exists. We develop sharp approximations of the probability of a large class of rare events.
Several differential equations usually appearing in mathematical physics are solved through a power series expansion, which reduces in solving difference equations. In this paper a probability problem is presented whose solution follows a completely reversed but systematic approach. Hence, this work is about illustrating how complex probability problems could be tackled with the more powerful techniques of a better studied and well understood field, that of differential equations. The problem is defined as follows: Inside a box containing r red and w white balls random removals occur. The ball…
Problems with topological uncertainties appear in many fields ranging from nano-device engineering to the design of bridges. In many of such problems, a part of the domains boundaries is subjected to random perturbations making inefficient conventional schemes that rely on discretization of the whole domain. In this paper, we study elliptic PDEs in domains with boundaries comprised of a deterministic part and random apertures, and apply the method of modified potentials with Green's kernels defined on the deterministic part of the domain. This approach allows to reduce the dimension of the ori…
In insurance mathematics optimal control problems over an infinite time horizon arise when computing risk measures. Their solutions correspond to solutions of deterministic semilinear (degenerate) elliptic partial differential equations. In this paper we propose a deep neural network algorithm for solving such partial differential equations in high dimensions. The algorithm is based on the correspondence of elliptic partial differential equations to backward stochastic differential equations with random terminal time.
We study scaling limits of the weakly driven Zhang and the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld (BTW) model for self-organized criticality. We show that the weakly driven Zhang model converges to a stochastic partial differential equation (PDE) with singular-degenerate diffusion. In addition, the deterministic BTW model is shown to converge to a singular-degenerate PDE. Alternatively, the proof of the scaling limit can be understood as a convergence proof of a finite-difference discretization for singular-degenerate stochastic PDEs. This extends recent work on finite difference approximation of (deterministic)…
Explicit stabilized integrators are an efficient alternative to implicit or semi-implicit methods to avoid the severe timestep restriction faced by standard explicit integrators applied to stiff diffusion problems. In this paper, we provide a fully discrete strong convergence analysis of a family of explicit stabilized methods coupled with finite element methods for a class of parabolic semilinear deterministic and stochastic partial differential equations. Numerical experiments including the semilinear stochastic heat equation with space-time white noise confirm the theoretical findings.
We study epidemic models where the infectivity of each individual is a random function of the infection age (the elapsed time of infection). To describe the epidemic evolution dynamics, we use a stochastic process that tracks the number of individuals at each time that have been infected for less than or equal to a certain amount of time, together with the aggregate infectivity process. We establish the functional law of large numbers (FLLN) for the stochastic processes that describe the epidemic dynamics. The limits are described by a set of deterministic integral equations, which has a furth…
We study a class of discrete-time random dynamical systems with compact phase space. Assuming that the deterministic counterpart of the system in question possesses a dissipation property, its linearisation is approximately controllable, and the driving noise is bounded and has a decomposable structure, we prove that the corresponding family of Markov processes has a unique stationary measure, which is exponentially mixing in the dual-Lipschitz metric. The abstract result is applicable to nonlinear dissipative PDEs perturbed by a bounded random force which affects only a few Fourier modes. We …
A numerical analysis for the fully discrete approximation of an operator Lyapunov equation related to linear SPDEs (stochastic partial differential equations) driven by multiplicative noise is considered. The discretization of the Lyapunov equation in space is given by finite elements and in time by a semiimplicit Euler scheme. The main result is the derivation of the rate of convergence in operator norm. Moreover, it is shown that the solution of the equation provides a representation of a quadratic and path dependent functional of the SPDE solution. This fact yields a deterministic numerical…
We start a study of various nonlinear PDEs under the effect of a modulation in time of the dispersive term. In particular in this paper we consider the modulated non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in dimension 1 and 2 and the derivative NLS in dimension 1. We introduce a deterministic notion of "irregularity" for the modulation and obtain local and global results similar to those valid without modulation. In some situations, we show how the irregularity of the modulation improves the well--posedness theory of the equations. We develop two different approaches to the analysis of the effects …
In this paper, we develop low regularity theory for 3D Burgers equation perturbed by a linear multiplicative stochastic force. This method is new and essentially different from the deterministic partial differential equations(PDEs). Our results and method can be widely applied to other stochastic hydrodynamic equations and the deterministic PDEs. As a further study, we establish a random version of maximum principle for random 3D Burgers equations, which will be an important tool for the study of 3D stochastic Burgers equations. As we know establishing moment estimates for highly nonlinear sto…
By examining the deterministic limit of a general $ε$-dependent generator for Markovian dynamics, which includes the continuous Fokker-Planck equations and discrete chemical master equations as two special cases, the intrinsic connections among mesoscopic stochastic dynamics, deterministic ODEs or PDEs, large deviations rate function, and macroscopic thermodynamic potential are established. Our result not only solves the long-lasting question on the origin of entropy function in classical irreversible thermodynamics, but also reveals an emergent feature that arises automatically during the det…
