In the present paper we analyze the critical properties of a quantum spherical spin glass model with short range, random interactions. Since the model allows for rigorous detailed calculations, we can show how the effective partition function calculated with help of the replica method for the spin glass fluctuating fields separates into a mean field contribution for the replica diagonal fields and a strictly short range partition function for the replica off-diagonal fields. The mean field part coincides with previous results. The short range part describes a phase transition in a Q^3-field theory, where the fluctuating fields depend on a space variable and two independent time variables. This we analyze using the renormalization group with dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction of dimensional poles. By generalizing standard field theory methods to our particular situation, we can identify the critical dimensionality as d_c = 5 at very low temperatures due to the dimensionality shift D_c = d_c + 1. we then perform a ε' expansion to order one loop to calculate the critical exponents by solving the renormalization group equations.
We present the full phase diagram of the spherical $2+p$ spin glass model with $p\geq 4$. The main outcome is the presence of a new phase with both properties of Full Replica Symmetry Breaking (FRSB) phases of discrete models, e.g, the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, and those of One Replica Symmetry Breaking (1RSB). The phase, which separates a 1RSB phase from FRSB phase, is described by an order parameter function $q(x)$ with a continuous part (FRSB) for $x<m$ and a discontinuous jump (1RSB) at $x=m$. This phase has a finite complexity which leads to different dynamic and static properties.
Guided by old results on simple mode-coupling models displaying glass-glass transitions, we demonstrate, through a crude analysis of the solution with one step of replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) derived by Crisanti and Leuzzi for the spherical $s+p$ mean-field spin glass [Phys. Rev. B 73, 014412 (2006)], that the phase behavior of these systems is not yet fully understood when $s$ and $p$ are well separated. First, there seems to be a possibility of glass-glass transition scenarios in these systems. Second, we find clear indications that the 1RSB solution cannot be correct in the full glassy …
The structure of states of the perturbed p-spin spherical spin-glass is analyzed. At low enough free energy metastable states have a supersymmetric structure, while at higher free energies the supersymmetry is broken. The transition between the supersymmetric and the supersymmetry-breaking phase is triggered by a change in the stability of states.
This review presents various aspects of a mean-field spin glass model known as the p-spin spherical spin glass model, which has raised a lot of interest in the study of spin glasses, and also for its possible links with a mean-field theory of structural glasses. This preprint contains no new results and is therefore not intended to be published, but its aim is to present a collection of results and formulas concerning this very rich model. It is in fact the english translation of one of the chapters of my PhD thesis (``Quelques aspects de la dynamique hors d'equilibre des verres de spin'', ``S…
The spin glass behavior near zero temperature is a complicated matter. To get an easier access to the spin glass order parameter $Q(x)$ and, at the same time, keep track of $Q_{ab}$, its matrix aspect, and hence of the Hessian controlling stability, we investigate an expansion of the replicated free energy functional around its ``spherical'' approximation. This expansion is obtained by introducing a constraint-field and a (double) Legendre Transform expressed in terms of spin correlators and constraint-field correlators. The spherical approximation has the spin fluctuations treated with a glob…
In this work, we confront the static approximate with a exact solution in the quantum spherical p-spin interaction model (p->oo and p=2). On the one hand, this study indicates that the static approximate corresponds to exact solution in the cases p->oo and p = 2 in the classic regime. On the other, the static approximate differs from the exact solution for p=2 in the quantum regime.
By considering the Langevin dynamics of the SK spin glass with a spherical constraint we calculate the asymptotic distance between two real replicas that evolve with the same thermal noise from different initial conditions. Despite the simplicity of the model its dynamics is known to be non trivial and presents aging phenomena. We find that the asymptotic distance between two replicas is maximal for a whole family of initial conditions that are arbitrarily close at t=0 . The asymptotic distance presents a dynamical transition at a temperature equal to the static phase transition one.
In structurally disordered ferromagnets the weak random dipole-dipole exchange may transform the polydomain state into a spin-glass one. To some extent the properties of such phase in disordered isotropic ferromagnet can be qualitatively described by the spherical model with the short-range ferromagnetic interaction and weak frustrated infinite-range random-bond exchange. This model is shown to predict that spin-glass phase substitute the ferromagnetic one at the arbitrary small disorder strength and that its thermodynamics has some similarity to that of polydomain state along with some signif…
We study the thermodynamic properties and the phase diagrams of a multi-spin antiferromagnetic spherical spin-glass model using the replica method. It is a two-sublattice version of the ferromagnetic spherical p-spin glass model. We consider both the replica-symmetric and the one-step replica-symmetry-breaking solutions, the latter being the most general solution for this model. We find paramagnetic, spin-glass, antiferromagnetic and mixed or glassy antiferromagnetic phases. The phase transitions are always of second order in the thermodynamic sense, but the spin-glass order parameter may unde…
Auffinger and Chen proved a variational formula for the free energy of the spherical bipartite spin glass in terms of a global minimum over the overlaps. We show that a different optimisation procedure leads to a saddle point, similar to the one achieved for models on the vertices of the hypercube.
We present the detailed analysis of the spherical s+p spin glass model with two competing interactions: among p spins and among s spins. The most interesting case is the 2+p model with p > 3 for which a very rich phase diagram occurs, including, next to the paramagnetic and the glassy phase represented by the one step replica symmetry breaking ansatz typical of the spherical p-spin model, other two amorphous phases. Transitions between two contiguous phases can also be of different kind. The model can thus serve as mean-field representation of amorphous-amorphous transitions (or transitions be…
Some questions concerning the calculation of the number of ``physical'' (metastable) states or complexity of the spherical $p$-spin spin glass model are reviewed and examined further. Particular attention is focused on the general calculation procedure which is discussed step-by-step.
A continuous 3-state Potts model with an analog of spherical constraints is proposed and is shown to have an exact solution in the case of infinite-ranged interactions. "Spherical" 3-state Potts spin glass model is solved using the known properties of a large random matrix. For this model the results are identical to those obtained by the replica approach for replica symmetric solution.
We examine the phase diagram of the $p$-interaction spin glass model in a transverse field. We consider a spherical version of the model and compare with results obtained in the Ising case. The analysis of the spherical model, with and without quantization, reveals a phase diagram very similar to that obtained in the Ising case. In particular, using the static approximation, reentrance is observed at low temperatures in both the quantum spherical and Ising models. This is an artifact of the approximation and disappears when the imaginary time dependence of the order parameter is taken into acc…
We investigate the behavior of the rare fluctuations of the free energy in the p-spin spherical model, evaluating the corresponding rate function via the Gärtner-Ellis theorem. This approach requires the knowledge of the analytic continuation of the disorder-averaged replicated partition function to arbitrary real number of replicas. In zero external magnetic field, we show via a one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) calculation that the rate function is infinite for fluctuations of the free energy above its typical value, corresponding to an anomalous, super-extensive suppression of rare …
In his Comment, Krakoviack [Phys. Rev. B (2007)] finds that the phase behavior of the s+p spin-glass model is different from what proposed by Crisanti and Leuzzi [Phys. Rev. B 73, 014412 (2006)] if s and p are larger than two and are separated well enough. He proposes a trial picture, based on a one step replica symmetry breaking solution, displaying a mode-coupling-like glass-to-glass transition line ending in a A3 singularity. However, actually, the physics of these systems changes when p-s is large, the instability of which the one step replica symmetry breaking glassy phase suffers turns o…
The classical result of concentration of the Gaussian measure on the sphere in the limit of large dimension induces a natural duality between Gaussian and spherical models of spin glass. We analyse the Legendre variational structure linking the free energies of these two systems, in the spirit of the equivalence of ensembles of statistical mechanics. Our analysis, combined with the previous work [4], shows that such models are replica symmetric. Lastly, we briefly discuss an application of our result to the study of the Gaussian Hopfield model.
The interactions between the dielectric polarization and the fluctuations of the strain (stress) tensor in relaxor ferroelectrics are shown to give rise to the anisotropy of the anharmonic P4-term in the Landau-type free energy, however, the harmonic P2-term is still properly described by the rigid spherical random bond--random field model. These are the essential features of the compressible spherical dipolar glass model, which is used to calculate the singularities of the specific heat near field-induced critical points. The results agree with recent high-resolution calorimetric experiments …
We report some results on the quenched disordered Spherical multi-$p$-Spin Model in presence of ferromagnetic couplings. In particular, we present the phase diagrams of some representative cases that schematically describe, in the mean-field approximation, the behavior of most known transitions in glassy materials, including dynamic arrest in super-cooled liquids, amorphous-amorphous transitions and spin-glass transitions. A simplified notation is introduced in order to compute systems properties in terms of an effective, self-induced, field encoding the whole ferromagnetic information.
We investigate the ensemble inequivalence of the spherical spin glass model with nonlinear interactions of polynomial order $p$. This model is solved exactly for arbitrary $p$ and is shown to have first-order phase transitions between the paramagnetic and spin glass or ferromagnetic phases for $p \geq 5$. In the parameter region around the first-order transitions, the solutions give different results depending on the ensemble used for the analysis. In particular, we observe that the microcanonical specific heat can be negative and the phase may not be uniquely determined by the temperature.
We present an alternate solution of a Gaussian spin-glass model with infinite ranged interactions and a global spherical constraint at zero magnetic field. The replicated spin-glass Hamiltonian is mapped onto a Coulomb gas of logarithmically interacting particles confined by a logarithmic single particle potential. The precise free energy is obtained by analyzing the Painlevé $τ^{IV} [n]$ function in the $n\to 0$ limit. The large $N$ thermodynamics exactly recovers that of Kosterlitz, Thouless and Jones \cite{ktjonesPRL}. It is hoped that the approach here can be extended to apply to systems b…
We show that the effective action of the quantum spherical spin glass is invariant under a generalized form of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin(BRST) supersymmetry. The Ward identities associated to this invariance indicate that the spin glass order parameter must vanish, and as a result the annealed average is exact in this model. We present new results for for the free energy, entropy and specific heat. Due to quantum effects the entropy remains finite and the specific het vanishes at zero temperature. results for the phase diagram coincide with those obtained by different formalisms. At zero t…
We study a quantum extension of the spherical $p$-spin-glass model using the imaginary-time replica formalism. We solve the model numerically and we discuss two analytical approximation schemes that capture most of the features of the solution. The phase diagram and the physical properties of the system are determined in two ways: by imposing the usual conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium and by using the condition of marginal stability. In both cases, the phase diagram consists of two qualitatively different regions. If the transition temperature is higher than a critical value $T^{\star}$…
In many mean-field glassy systems, the low-temperature Gibbs measure is dominated by exponentially many metastable states. We analyze the evolution of the metastable states as temperature changes adiabatically in the solvable case of the spherical $s+p$-spin glass model, extending the work of Barrat, Franz and Parisi J. Phys. A 30, 5593 (1997). We confirm the presence of level crossings, bifurcations, and temperature chaos. For the states that are at equilibrium close to the so-called dynamical temperature $T_d$, we find, however, that the following state method (and the dynamical solution of …

The large N infinite range spin glass is considered, in particular the number of spin components k needed to form the ground state and the sample-to-sample fluctuations in the Lagrange multiplier field on each site. The physical significance of k for the correlation functions is discussed. The difference between the large N and spherical spin glass is emphasized; a slight difference between the average Lagrange multiplier of the large N and spherical spin glasses is derived, leading to a slight increase in the energy of the ground state compared to the naive expectation. Further, there is a ch…
We consider the p-spin spherical spin-glass model in the presence of an external magnetic field as a general example of a mean-field system where a one step replica symmetry breaking (1-RSB) occurs. In this context we compute the complexity of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer states, performing a quenched computation. We find what is the general connection between this method and the standard static 1-RSB one, formulating a clear mapping between the parameters used in the two different calculations. We also perform a dynamical analysis of the model, by which we confirm the validity of our results.
Binary mixtures of large and small particles with disparate size ratio exhibit a rich phenomenology at their glass transition points. In order to gain insights on such systems, we introduce and study a two-component version of the $p$-spin spherical spin glass model. We employ the replica method to calculate the free energy and the phase diagram. We show that when the strengths of the interactions of each component are not widely separated, the model has only one glass phase characterized by the conventional one-step replica symmetry breaking. However when the strengths of the interactions are…
We investigate partition-function zeros of the many-body interacting spherical spin glass, the so-called $p$-spin spherical model, with respect to the complex temperature in the thermodynamic limit. We use the replica method and extend the procedure of the replica symmetry breaking ansatz to be applicable in the complex-parameter case. We derive the phase diagrams in the complex-temperature plane and calculate the density of zeros in each phase. Near the imaginary axis away from the origin, there is a replica symmetric phase having a large density. On the other hand, we observe no density in t…
The aim of this paper is to discuss the main ideas of the Talagrand proof of the Parisi Ansatz for the free-energy of Mean Field Spin Glasses with a physicist's approach. We consider the case of the spherical $p$-spin model, which has the following advantages: 1) the Parisi Ansatz takes the simple ``one step replica symmetry breaking form'', 2) the replica free-energy as a function of the order parameters is simple enough to allow for numerical maximization with arbitrary precision. We present the essential ideas of the proof, we stress its connections with the theory of effective potentials f…
The kinetic glass transition in short-range attractive colloids is theoretically studied by time-convolutionless mode-coupling theory (TMCT). By numerical calculations, TMCT is shown to recover all the remarkable features predicted by the mode-coupling theory for attractive colloids, namely the glass-liquid-glass reentrant, the glass-glass transition, and the higher-order singularities. It is also demonstrated through the comparisons with the results of molecular dynamics for the binary attractive colloids that TMCT improves the critical values of the volume fraction. In addition, a schematic …
Within the Bethe- Peierls method the for short- ranged Ising spin glass, recently formulated by Serva and Paladin, the equation for the spin glass parameter function near the transition to the paramagnetic phase has been carried out. The form of this equation is qualitatively similar to that for Sherrington- Kirpatrick model, but quantitatively the order parametr function depends of the dimension d of the system. In the case d tends to infinity one obtains well known Parisi solution.
We study the critical behavior of the short-range p-state Potts spin glass in three and four dimensions using Monte Carlo simulations. In three dimensions, for p = 3, a finite-size scaling analysis of the correlation length shows clear evidence of a transition to a spin-glass phase at T_c = 0.273(5) for a Gaussian distribution of interactions and T_c = 0.377(5) for a bimodal distribution. These results indicate that the lower critical dimension of the 3-state Potts glass is below three. By contrast, the correlation length of the ten-state (p = 10) Potts glass in three dimensions remains small …
The classical transverse field Ising spin- glass model with short-range interactions is investigated beyond the mean- field approximation for a real d- dimensional lattice. We use an appropriate nontrivial modification of the Bethe- Peierls method recently formulated for the Ising spin- glass. The zero- temperature critical value of the transverse field and the linear susceptibility in the paramagnetic phase are obtained analytically as functions of dimensionality d. The phase diagram is also calculated numerically for different values of d. In the limit d -> infinity, known mean- field result…
This paper characterizes the annealed complexity of bipartite spherical spin glasses, both pure and mixed. This means we give exact variational formulas for the asymptotics of the expected numbers of critical points and of local minima. This problem was initially considered by [Auffinger, Chen 2014], who gave upper and lower bounds on this complexity. We find two surprising connections between pure bipartite and pure single-species spin glasses, which were studied by [Auffinger, Ben Arous, Černý 2013]. First, the local minima of any pure bipartite model lie primarily in a low-energy band, simi…
We investigate the barriers separating metastable states in the spherical p-spin glass model using the instanton method. We show that the problem of finding the barrier heights can be reduced to the causal two-real-replica dynamics. We find the probability for the system to escape one of the highest energy metastable states and the energy barrier corresponding to this process.
The spherical p-spin model is not only a fundamental model in statistical mechanics of disordered system, but has recently gained popularity since many hard problems in machine learning can be mapped on it. Thus the study of the out of equilibrium dynamics in this model is interesting both for the glass physics and for its implications on algorithms solving NP-hard problems. We revisit the long-time limit of the out of equilibrium dynamics of mean-field spherical mixed p-spin models. We consider quenches (gradient descent dynamics) starting from initial conditions thermalized at some temperatu…
We revisit the long time dynamics of the spherical fully connected $p = 2$-spin glass model when the number of spins $N$ is large but {\it finite}. At $T=0$ where the system is in a (trivial) spin-glass phase, and on long time scale $t \gtrsim {\cal O}{(N^{2/3})}$ we show that the behavior of physical observables, like the energy, correlation and response functions, is controlled by the density of near-extreme eigenvalues at the edge of the spectrum of the coupling matrix $J$, and are thus non self-averaging. We show that the late time decay of these observables, once averaged over the disorde…
We consider an infinite-range spherical p-spin glass model with an additional r-spin ferromagnetic interaction, both statically using a replica analysis and dynamically via a generating functional method. For r>2 we find that there are first order transitions to ferromagnetic phases. For r<p there are two ferromagnetic phases, one non-glassy replica symmetric and one exhibiting glassy one-step replica symmetry breaking and aging, whereas for r>=p only the replica symmetric phase exists.
This chapter introduces a variety of spin glass models, beyond the simple Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) version, that have led to enriched understanding and application.
We present a technique to generate relations connecting pure state weights, overlaps, and correlation functions in short-range spin glasses. These are obtained directly from the unperturbed Hamiltonian and hold for general coupling distributions. All are satisfied in phases with simple thermodynamic structure, such as the droplet-scaling and chaotic pairs pictures. If instead nontrivial mixed-state pictures hold, the relations suggest that replica symmetry is broken as described by a Derrida-Ruelle cascade, with pure state weights distributed as a Poisson-Dirichlet process.
We investigate the critical behavior of a three-dimensional short-range spin glass model in the presence of an external field $\eps$ conjugated to the Edwards-Anderson order parameter. In the mean-field approximation this model is described by the Adam-Gibbs-DiMarzio approach for the glass transition. By Monte Carlo numerical simulations we find indications for the existence of a line of critical points in the plane $(\eps,T)$ which separates two paramagnetic phases and terminates in a critical endpoint. This line of critical points appears due to the large degeneracy of metastable states pres…
Potts glasses are prototype models that have been used to understand the structural glass transition. However, in finite space dimensions a glass transition remains to be detected in the 10-state Potts glass. Using a one-dimensional model with long-range power-law interactions we present evidence that a glass transition below the upper critical dimension can exist for short-range systems at low enough temperatures. Gaining insights into the structural glass transition for short-range systems using spin models is thus potentially possible, yet difficult.
We consider spherical p-spin glass and p-spin glass models at imaginary temperatures. Imaginary temperatures are special case, when order parameters are real value numbers. Here there is a some antiferromagnetic like order.
The state space of finite square and cubic Ising spin glass models is analysed in terms of the global and the local density of states. Systems with uniform and gaussian probability distribution of interactions are compared. Different measures for the local state density are presented and discussed. In particular the question whether the local density of states grows exponentially or not is considered. The direct comparison of global and local densities leads to consequences for the structure of the state space.
We study -- using molecular dynamics simulations -- the temperature dependence of the dynamics in a dense short-ranged attractive colloidal glass to find evidence of the kinetic glass-glass transition predicted by the ideal Mode Coupling Theory. According to the theory, the two distinct glasses are stabilized one by excluded volume and the other by short-ranged attractive interactions. By studying the density autocorrelation functions, we discover that the short-ranged attractive glass is unstable. Indeed, activated bond-breaking processes slowly convert the attractive glass into the hard-sphe…

In this work we discuss a short range version of the $p$-spin model. The model is provided with a parameter that allows to control the crossover with the mean field behaviour. We detect a discrepancy between the perturbative approach and numerical simulation. We attribute it to non-perturbative effects due to the finite probability that each particular realization of the disorder allows for the formation of regions where the system is less frustrated and locally freezes at a higher temperature.
Aging has become the paradigm to describe dynamical behavior of glassy systems, and in particular spin glasses. Trap models have been introduced as simple caricatures of effective dynamics of such systems. In this Letter we show that in a wide class of mean field models and on a wide range of time scales, aging occurs precisely as predicted by the REM-like trap model of Bouchaud and Dean. This is the first rigorous result about aging in mean field models except for the REM and the spherical model.
The concept of replica symmetry breaking found in the solution of the mean-field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model has been applied to a variety of problems in science ranging from biological to computational and even financial analysis. Thus it is of paramount importance to understand which predictions of the mean-field solution apply to non-mean-field systems, such as realistic short-range spin-glass models. The one-dimensional spin glass with random power-law interactions promises to be an ideal test-bed to answer this question: Not only can large system sizes-which are usually a sho…
The short- and long-time dynamics of model systems undergoing a glass transition with apparent inversion of Kauzmann and dynamical arrest glass transition lines is investigated. These models belong to the class of the spherical mean-field approximation of a spin-$1$ model with $p$-body quenched disordered interaction, with $p>2$, termed spherical Blume-Emery-Griffiths models. Depending on temperature and chemical potential the system is found in a paramagnetic or in a glassy phase and the transition between these phases can be of a different nature. In specific regions of the phase diagram coe…
The static and dynamic susceptibilities for a general class of mean field random orthogonal spherical spin glass models are studied. We show how the static and dynamical properties of the linear and nonlinear susceptibilities depend on the behaviour of the density of states of the two body interaction matrix in the neighbourhood of the largest eigenvalue. Our results are compared with experimental results and also with those of the droplet theory of spin glasses.
A theoretical description of the low-temperature phase of short-range spin glasses has remained elusive for decades. In particular, it is unclear if theories that assert a single pair of pure states, or theories that are based infinitely many pure states-such as replica symmetry breaking-best describe realistic short-range systems. To resolve this controversy, the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass in thermal boundary conditions is studied numerically using population annealing Monte Carlo. In thermal boundary conditions all eight combinations of periodic vs antiperiodic bound…
