Consider in $L^2(\R)$ the \Sc operator family $H(g):=-d^2_x+V_g(x)$ depending on the real parameter $g$, where $V_g(x)$ is a complex-valued but $PT$ symmetric periodic potential. An explicit condition on $V$ is obtained which ensures that the spectrum of $H(g)$ is purely real and band shaped; furthermore, a further condition is obtained which ensures that the spectrum contains at least a pair of complex analytic arcs.
We consider discrete one-dimensional random Schroedinger operators with decaying matrix-valued, independent potentials. We show that if the l^2-norm of this potential has finite expectation value with respect to the product measure then almost surely the Schroedinger operator has an interval of purely absolutely continuous (ac) spectrum. We apply this result to Schroedinger operators on a strip. This work provides a new proof and generalizes a result obtained by Delyon, Simon, and Souillard.
We give a CLR type bound on the number of bound states of Schroedinger operators with matrix-valued potentials using the functional integral method of Lieb. This significantly improves the constant in this inequality obtained earlier by Hundertmark.
An explicit construction is provided for embedding n positive eigenvalues in the spectrum of a Schroedinger operator on the half-line with a Dirichlet boundary condition at the origin. The resulting potential is of von Neumann-Wigner type, but can be real valued as well as complex valued.
This paper mainly addresses the strong unique continuation property for the electromagnetic Schrödinger operator with complex-valued coefficients. Appropriate multipliers with physical backgrounds have been introduced to prove a priori estimates. Moreover, its application in an exact controllability problem has been shown, in which case, the boundary value determines the interior value completely.
We prove dispersive estimates for linear Schroedinger equations in two space dimensions. The potential is assumed to be real-valued with some polynomial decay (faster than a negative third power), and zero energy is assumed to be a regular point for the perturbed resolvent.
The Feynman path integrals for the magnetic Schroedinger equations are defined mathematically, in particular, with polynomially growing potentials in the spatial direction. For example, we can handle electromagnetic potentials $(V,A_{1},A_{2},...,A_{d})$ such that $V(t,x) = |x|^{2(l+1)} + $`` a polynomial of degree $(2l + 1)$ in $x$ " ($l = 0,1,2,...$) and $A_{j}(t,x)$ are polynomials of degree $l$ in $x$. The Feynman path integrals are defined as $L^2$-valued continuous functions with respect to the time variable.
By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the electric potential and magnetic field which guarantee that the corresponding two-dimensional Schroedinger operator possesses no point spectrum. The settings of complex-valued electric potentials and singular magnetic potentials of Aharonov-Bohm field are also covered.
We prove that the spectrum of Schroedinger operators in three dimensions is purely continuous and coincides with the non-negative semiaxis for all potentials satisfying a form-subordinate smallness condition. By developing the method of multipliers, we also establish the absence of point spectrum for Schroedinger operators in all dimensions under various alternative hypotheses, still allowing complex-valued potentials with critical singularities.
For one-dimensional Schroedinger operators with complex-valued potentials, we construct pseudomodes corresponding to large pseudoeigenvalues. Our (non-semi-classical) approach results in substantial progress in achieving optimal conditions and conclusions as well as in covering a wide class of previously inaccessible potentials, including discontinuous ones.
The Schroedinger equation on the half line is considered with a real-valued, integrable potential having a finite first moment. It is shown that the potential and the boundary conditions are uniquely determined by the data containing the discrete eigenvalues for a boundary condition at the origin, the continuous part of the spectral measure for that boundary condition, and a subset of the discrete eigenvalues for a different boundary condition. This result extends the celebrated two-spectrum uniqueness theorem of Borg and Marchenko to the case where there is also a continuous spectrum
We show that the Schroedinger equation is a lift of Newton's law of motion on the space of probability measures, where derivatives are taken w.r.t. the Wasserstein Riemannian metric. Here the potential is the sum of the total classical potential energy of the extended system and its Fisher information. The precise relation is established via a well known ('Madelung') transform which is shown to be a symplectic submersion of the standard symplectic structure of complex valued functions into the canonical symplectic space over the Wasserstein space. All computations are conducted in the framewor…
For a system of M coupled Schroedinger equations, the relationship is found between the vector-valued norming constants and M+1 spectra corresponding to the same potential matrix but different boundary conditions. Under a special choice of particular boundary conditions, this equation for norming vectors has a unique solution. The double set of norming vectors and associated spectrum of one of the M+1 boundary value problems uniquely specifies the matrix of potentials in the multichannel Schroedinger equation.
In the large coupling constant limit, we obtain an asymptotic expansion in powers of $μ^{-\frac{1}δ}$ of the derivative of the spectral shift function corresponding to the pair $\big(P_μ=P_0+μW(x),P_0=-Δ+V(x)\big),$ where $W(x)$ is positive, $W(x)\sim w_0(\frac{x}{|x|})|x|^{-δ}$ near infinity for some $δ>n$ and $w_0\in {\mathcal C}^\infty(\mathbb S^{n-1};\,\mathbb R_+).$ Here $\mathbb S^{n-1}$ is the unite sphere of the space $\mathbb R^n$ and $μ$ is a large parameter. The potential $V$ is real-valued, smooth and periodic with respect to a lattice $Γ$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$.
We consider a Schroedinger operator on the axis with a bipartite potential consisting of two compactly supported complex-valued functions, whose supports are separated by a large distance. We show that this operator possesses a sequence of approximately equidistant complex-valued wavenumbers situated near the real axis. Depending on its imaginary part, each wavenumber corresponds to either a resonance or an eigenvalue. The obtained sequence of wavenumbers resembles transmission resonances in electromagnetic Fabry-Pérot interferometers formed by parallel mirrors. Our result has potential applic…
We investigate physical models which possess simultaneous ordinary and type A N-fold supersymmetries, which we call type A (N,1)-fold supersymmetry. Inequivalent type A (N,1)-fold supersymmetric models with real-valued potentials are completely classified. Among them, we find that a trigonometric Rosen-Morse type and its elliptic version are of physical interest. We investigate various aspects of these models, namely, dynamical breaking and interrelation between ordinary and N-fold supersymmetries, shape invariance, quasi-solvability, and an associated algebra which is composed of one bosonic …
We consider a one-frequency, quasi-periodic, block Jacobi operator, whose blocks are generic matrix-valued analytic functions. We establish Anderson localization for this type of operator under the assumption that the coupling constant is large enough but independent of the frequency. This generalizes a result of J. Bourgain and S. Jitomirskaya on localization for band lattice, quasi-periodic Schroedinger operators.
The Schroedinger equation is considered on the line when the potential is real valued, compactly supported, and square integrable. The nonuniqueness is analyzed in the recovery of such a potential from the data consisting of the ratio of a corresponding reflection coefficient to the transmission coefficient. It is shown that there are a discrete number of potentials corresponding to the data and that their L^2-norms are related to each other in a simple manner. All those potentials are identified, and it is shown how an additional estimate on the L^2-norm in the data can uniquely identify the …
We present a collection of matrix valued shape invariant potentials which give rise to new exactly solvable problems of SUSY quantum mechanics. It includes all irreducible matrix superpotentials of the generic form $W=kQ+\frac1k R+P$ where $k$ is a variable parameter, $Q$ is the unit matrix multiplied by a real valued function of independent variable $x$, and $P$, $R$ are hermitian matrices depending on $x$. In particular we recover the Pron'ko-Stroganov "matrix Coulomb potential" and all known scalar shape invariant potentials of SUSY quantum mechanics. In addition, five new shape invariant p…
Using a correspondence between the spectrum of the damped wave equation and non-self-adjoint Schroedinger operators, we derive various bounds on complex eigenvalues of the former. In particular, we establish a sharp result that the one-dimensional damped wave operator is similar to the undamped one provided that the L^1 norm of the (possibly complex-valued) damping is less than 2. It follows that these small dampings are spectrally undetectable.
Let $H_0 = -Δ+ V_0(x)$ be a Schroedinger operator on $L_2(\mathbb{R}^ν),$ $ν=1,2,$ or 3, where $V_0(x)$ is a bounded measurable real-valued function on $\mathbb{R}^ν.$ Let $V$ be an operator of multiplication by a bounded integrable real-valued function $V(x)$ and put $H_r = H_0+rV$ for real $r.$ We show that the associated spectral shift function (SSF) $ξ$ admits a natural decomposition into the sum of absolutely continuous $ξ^{(a)}$ and singular $ξ^{(s)}$ SSFs. This is a special case of an analogous result for resolvent comparable pairs of self-adjoint operators, which generalises the known …
The quantum measurement axiom dictates that physical observables and in particular the Hamiltonian must be diagonalizable and have a real spectrum. For a time-independent Hamiltonian (with a discrete spectrum) these conditions ensure the existence of a positive-definite inner product that renders the Hamiltonian self-adjoint. Unlike for a time-independent Hamiltonian, this does not imply the unitarity of the Schroedinger time-evolution for a general time-dependent Hamiltonian. We give an additional necessary and sufficient condition for the unitarity of time-evolution. In particular, we obtain…
We consider the unperturbed operator $H_0: = (-i \nabla - {\bf A})^2 + W$, self-adjoint in $L^2({\mathbb R}^2)$. Here ${\bf A}$ is a magnetic potential which generates a constant magnetic field $b>0$, and the edge potential $W = \bar{W}$ is a ${\mathcal T}$-periodic non constant bounded function depending only on the first coordinate $x \in {\mathbb R}$ of $(x,y) \in {\mathbb R}^2$. Then the spectrum $σ(H_0)$ of $H_0$ has a band structure, the band functions are $b {\mathcal T}$-periodic, and generically there are infinitely many open gaps in $σ(H_0)$. We establish explicit sufficient conditio…
