Black Saturns have multiple horizons and so offer a testing ground for the ideas of black hole thermodynamics. In this note, we numerically scan for phases that are in equilibrium by extremizing total entropy in the 2-dimensional moduli space of stationary, singly rotating black Saturns with fixed total mass and angular momentum. On top of the known T_H=T_R, Omega_H=Omega_R configurations, we find phases that do not balance the temperature and angular velocity of the ring and the hole. But these (and most of the balanced Saturns) go away when we demand that the system is metastable, by imposing that the Hessian of the entropy is negative definite. Metastablity occurs when the dimensionless total angular momentum lies in a narrow window 0.92457<j<0.92463 of the thin ring branch. This is consistent with the expected range of classical stability of black Saturns and therefore may imply that thermal stability is tied to classical stability, in analogy with Gubser-Mitra in the translationally-invariant case. We also comment on the possibility of constructing plasma configurations that are dual to black Saturns in AdS.
We present a new stationary, asymptotically flat solution of 5D Einstein-Maxwell gravity describing a Saturn-like black object: a rotating black hole surrounded by a rotating dipole black ring. The solution is generated by combining the vacuum black Saturn solution and the vacuum black ring solution with appropriately chosen parameters. Some basic properties of the solution are analyzed and the basic quantities are calculated.
We construct a new static solution to the 5D Einstein-Maxwell equations describing a static black hole surrounded by a non-rotating dipole black ring. The configuration is kept in equilibrium by an external magnetic field interacting with the dipole charge of the black ring. The properties of the black Saturn-like configuration are studied and the basic physical quantities are calculated. The solution demonstrates 2-fold continuous non-uniqueness of the 5D magnetized static neutral black objects for fixed total mass and Melvin background.
We investigate the possibility of constructing degenerate Black Saturns in the family of solutions of Elvang-Figueras. We demonstrate that such solutions suffer from naked singularities.
Using the inverse scattering method we construct an exact stationary asymptotically flat 4+1-dimensional vacuum solution describing Black Saturn: a spherical black hole surrounded by a black ring. Angular momentum keeps the configuration in equilibrium. Black saturn reveals a number of interesting gravitational phenomena: (1) The balanced solution exhibits 2-fold continuous non-uniqueness for fixed mass and angular momentum; (2) Remarkably, the 4+1d Schwarzschild black hole is not unique, since the black ring and black hole of black saturn can counter-rotate to give zero total angular momentum…
In this paper, we will analyze the effects of thermal fluctuations on the stability of a black Saturn. The entropy of the black Saturn will get corrected due to these thermal fluctuations. We will demonstrate that the correction term generated by these thermal fluctuations is a logarithmic term. Then we will use this corrected value of the entropy to obtain bounds for various parameters of the black Saturn. We will also analyze the thermodynamical stability of the black Saturn in presence of thermal fluctuations, using this corrected value of the entropy.
The physical version and equilibrium state version of the first law of thermodynamics for a black object consisting of n-dimensional charged stationary axisymmetric black hole surrounded by $a$ black rings, the so-called black Saturn was derived. The general setting for our derivation is n-dimensional dilaton gravity with p + 1 strength form fields.
In this paper, we will analyze the effect of thermal fluctuations on the thermodynamics of a charged dilatonic black Saturn. These thermal fluctuations will correct the thermodynamics of the charged dilatonic black Saturn. We will analyze the corrections to the thermodynamics of this system by first relating the fluctuations in the entropy to the fluctuations in the energy. Then, we will use the relation between entropy and a conformal field theory to analyze the fluctuations in the entropy. We will demonstrate that similar physical results are obtained from both these approaches. We will also…
We prove smoothness of the domain of outer communications (d.o.c.) of the Black Saturn solutions of Elvang and Figueras. We show that the metric on the d.o.c. extends smoothly across two disjoint event horizons with topology R x S^3 and R x S^1 x S^2. We establish stable causality of the d.o.c. when the Komar angular momentum of the spherical component of the horizon vanishes, and present numerical evidence for stable causality in general.
We construct new charged static solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations in five dimensions via a solution generation technique utilizing the symmetries of the reduced Lagrangian. By applying our method on the multi-Reissner-Nordstrom solution in four dimensions, we generate the multi-Reissner-Nordstrom solution in five dimensions. We focus on the five-dimensional solution describing a pair of charged black objects with general masses and electric charges. This solution includes the double Reissner-Nordstrom solution as well as the charged version of the five-dimensional static black …
We study the dynamics of supertubes in smooth bubbling geometries with three charges and three dipole charges that can describe black holes, black rings and their microstates. We find the supertube Hamiltonian in these backgrounds and show that there exist metastable supertube configurations, that can decay into supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric ones via brane-flux annihilation. We also find stable non-supersymmetric configurations. Both the metastable and the stable non-supersymmetric configuration are expected to describe microstate geometries for non-extremal black holes, and we discuss…
Despite their consequential applications, metastable states of antibranes in warped throats are not yet fully understood. In this thesis, we provide new information on various aspects of these metastable antibranes through applications of the blackfold effective theory for higher-dimensional black holes. As concrete examples, we study the conjectured metastable state of polarised anti-D3 branes at the tip of the Klebanov-Strassler (KS) throat in type IIB supergravity and the analogous state of polarised anti-M2 branes at the tip of the Cvetic-Gibbons-Lu-Pope (CGLP) throat in eleven-dimensional…
We have recently reported (arXiv:1403.2757) the existence of Kerr black holes with scalar hair in General Relativity minimally coupled to a massive, complex scalar field. These solutions interpolate between boson stars and Kerr black holes. The latter have a well known topologically S^2 ergo-surface (ergo-sphere) whereas the former develop a S^1*S^1 ergo-surface (ergo-torus) in a region of parameter space. We show that hairy black holes always have an ergo-region, and that this region is delimited by either an ergo-sphere or an ergo-Saturn -- i.e. a S^2\oplus (S^1*S^1) ergo-surface. In the pha…
The backreaction on black holes due to dragging heavy, rather than test, objects is discussed. As a case study, a regular black Saturn system where the central black hole has vanishing intrinsic angular momentum, J^{BH}=0, is considered. It is shown that there is a correlation between the sign of two response functions. One is interpreted as a moment of inertia of the black ring in the black Saturn system. The other measures the variation of the black ring horizon angular velocity with the central black hole mass, for fixed ring mass and angular momentum. The two different phases defined by th…
We construct exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton field equations in five dimensions, which describe general configurations of charged and static black holes sitting on a Kaluza-Klein bubble. More specifically we discuss the configurations describing two black holes sitting on a Kaluza-Klein bubble and also the general charged static black Saturn balanced by a Kaluza-Klein bubble. A straightforward extension of the solution generating technique leads to a new solution describing the charged static black Saturn on the Taub-bolt instanton. We compute the conserved charges and investig…
Using the blackfold effective theory applied to extremal Kerr branes we provide evidence for the existence of new stationary extremal black hole solutions in asymptotically flat spacetime with both single and multiple disconnected horizons. These include extremal doubly-spinning black rings, black saturns, di-rings and bi-rings in five spacetime dimensions as well as extremal Myers-Perry black holes and black saturns in dimensions greater than five. Some of these constructions constitute the first examples of black hole solutions with extremal disconnected horizons in vacuum Einstein gravity.
In a recent note, arXiv:0808.1415, it was argued that a hypothetical metastable black hole scenario could pose collider risk not excluded by our previous study. We comment on inconsistency of this proposed scenario.
We review some of the most striking properties of the phase diagrams of higher dimensional black holes in pure gravity. We focus on static black hole solutions with Kaluza-Klein asymptotics and stationary black hole solutions in flat Minkowski space. Both cases exhibit a rich pattern of interconnected phases and merger points with topology changing transitions. In the first case, the phase diagram includes uniform and non-uniform black strings, localized black holes and sequences of Kaluza-Klein bubbles. In the latter case, it includes Myers-Perry black holes, black rings, black saturns and pi…
We present detailed physics analyses of two different 4+1-dimensional asymptotically flat vacuum black hole solutions with spin in two independent planes: the doubly spinning black ring and the bicycling black ring system ("bi-rings"). The latter is a new solution describing two concentric orthogonal rotating black rings which we construct using the inverse scattering technique. We focus particularly on extremal zero-temperature limits of the solutions. We construct the phase diagram of currently known zero-temperature vacuum black hole solutions with a single event horizon, and discuss the no…
We study topology-changing transitions in the space of higher-dimensional black hole solutions. Kol has proposed that these are conifold-type transitions controlled by self-similar double-cone geometries. We present an exact example of this phenomenon in the intersection between a black hole horizon and a cosmological deSitter horizon in D >= 6. We also describe local models for the critical geometries that control many transitions in the phase space of higher-dimensional black holes, such as the pinch-down of a topologically spherical black hole to a black ring or to a black p-sphere, or the …
We consider maximal slices of the Myers-Perry black hole, the doubly spinning black ring, and the Black Saturn solution. These slices are complete, asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds with inner boundaries corresponding to black hole horizons. Although these spaces are simply connected as a consequence of topological censorship, they have non-trivial topology. In this note we investigate the question of whether the topology of spatial sections of the horizon uniquely determines the topology of the maximal slices. We show that the horizon determines the homological invariants of the slice …
In the presence of a complex scalar field scalar-tensor theory allows for scalarized rotating hairy black holes. We exhibit the domain of existence for these scalarized black holes, which is bounded by scalarized rotating boson stars and ordinary hairy black holes. We discuss the global properties of these solutions. Like their counterparts in general relativity, their angular momentum may exceed the Kerr bound, and their ergosurfaces may consist of a sphere and a ring, i.e., form an ergo-Saturn.
We present numerical evidence for the existence of several types of static black hole solutions with a nonspherical event horizon topology in $d\geq 6$ spacetime dimensions. These asymptotically flat configurations are found for a specific metric ansatz and can be viewed as higher dimensional counterparts of the $d=5$ static black rings, dirings and black Saturn. Similar to that case, they are supported against collapse by conical singularities. The issue of rotating generalizations of these solutions is also considered.
We study black hole solutions in asymptotically AdS_4 spacetime with scalar hair. Following AdS/CFT dictionary these black holes can be interpreted as thermal states of 2+1 dimensional conformal gauge theory plasma, deformed by a relevant operator. We discover a rich phase structure of the solutions. Surprisingly, we find thermodynamically stable phases with spontaneously broken global symmetries that exist only at high temperatures. These phases are metastable, and join the stable symmetric phase via a mean-field second-order phase transition.
We estimate the rate at which collisions between ultra-high energy cosmic rays can form small black holes in models with extra dimensions. If recent conjectures about false vacuum decay catalyzed by black hole evaporation apply, the lack of vacuum decay events in our past light cone may place new bounds on the black hole formation rate and thus on the fundamental scale of gravity in these models. For theories with fundamental scale $E_{*}$ above the Higgs instability scale of the Standard Model, we find a lower bound on $E_{*}$ that is within about an order of magnitude of the energy where the…
Recently, in collaboration with Susskind, we proposed a model of Schwarzschild black holes in Matrix theory. A large Schwarzschild black hole is described by a metastable bound state of a large number of D0-branes which are held together by a background, whose structure has so far been understood only in 8 and 11 dimensions. The Hawking radiation proceeds by emission of small clusters of D0-branes. We estimate the Hawking rate in the Matrix theory model of Schwarzschild black holes and find agreement with the semiclassical rate up to an undetermined numerical coefficient of order 1.
We explore the rich phase space of singly spinning (both neutral and charged) black hole solutions in the large $D$ limit. We find several 'bumpy' branches which are connected to multiple (concentric) black rings, and black Saturns. Additionally we obtain stationary solutions without axisymmetry that are only stationary at $D\rightarrow \infty$, but correspond to long lived black hole solutions at finite $D$. These multipolar solutions can appear as intermediate configurations in the decay of ultra-spinning Myers-Perry black holes into stable black holes. Finally we also construct stationary s…
A black hole solution to low energy type IIA string theory which is extremal, non-supersymmetric, and carries 0- and 6-brane charge is presented. For large values of the charges it is metastable and a corresponding D-brane picture can be found. The mass and statistical entropy of the two descriptions agree at a correspondence point up to factors of order one, providing more evidence that the correspondence principle for black holes and strings of Horowitz and Polchinski may be extended to include black holes with more than one Ramond-Ramond charge.
We construct an approximate solution for an asymptotically flat, neutral, thin rotating black ring in any dimension D>=5 by matching the near-horizon solution for a bent boosted black string, to a linearized gravity solution away from the horizon. The rotating black ring solution has a regular horizon of topology S^1 x S^{D-3} and incorporates the balancing condition of the ring as a zero-tension condition. For D=5 our method reproduces the thin ring limit of the exact black ring solution. For D>=6 we show that the black ring has a higher entropy than the Myers-Perry black hole in the ultra-sp…
The local and global thermal phase structure for asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes charged under an abelian gauge group, with both Gauss-Bonnet and quartic field strength corrections, is mapped out for all parameter space. We work in the grand canonical ensemble where the external electric potential is held fixed. The analysis is performed in an arbitrary number of dimensions, for all three possible horizon topologies - spherical, flat or hyperbolic. For spherical horizons, new metastable configurations are exhibited both for the pure Gauss-Bonnet theory as well as the pure higher deri…
We study the metastability of Anti-de Sitter topological black holes with compact hyperbolic horizons. We focus on the five-dimensional case, an AdS/CFT dual to thermal states in the maximally supersymmetric large-N Yang-Mills theory, quantized on a three-dimensional compact hyperboloid. We estimate the various rates for quantum-statistical D3-brane emission, using WKB methods in the probe-brane approximation, including thermal tunneling and Schwinger pair production. The topological black holes are found to be metastable at high temperature. At low temperatures, D-branes are emitted without e…
We study six-dimensional rotating black holes with bumpy horizons: these are topologically spherical, but the sizes of symmetric cycles on the horizon vary non-monotonically with the polar angle. We construct them numerically for the first three bumpy families, and follow them in solution space until they approach critical solutions with localized singularities on the horizon. We find strong evidence of the conical structures that have been conjectured to mediate the transitions to black rings, to black Saturns, and to a novel class of bumpy black rings. For a different, recently identified cl…
We argue that the configurations that approach maximal entropy in five-dimensional asymptotically flat vacuum gravity, for fixed mass and angular momentum, are `black Saturns' with a central, close to static, black hole and a very thin black ring around it. For any value of the angular momentum, the upper bound on the entropy is equal to the entropy of a static black hole of the same total mass. For fixed mass, spin and area there are families of multi-ring solutions with an arbitrarily large number of continuous parameters, so the total phase space is infinite-dimensional. Somewhat surprising…
We explore the phase space of non-uniform black branes compactified on oblique lattices with a large number of dimensions. We find the phase diagrams for different periodicities and angles, and determine the thermodynamically preferred phases for each lattice configuration. In a range of angles, we observe that some phases become metastable.
Black holes emit high energy particles which induce a finite density potential for any scalar field $ϕ$ coupling to the emitted quanta. Due to energetic considerations, $ϕ$ evolves locally to minimize the effective masses of the outgoing states. In theories where $ϕ$ resides at a metastable minimum, this effect can drive $ϕ$ over its potential barrier and classically catalyze the decay of the vacuum. Because this is not a tunneling process, the decay rate is not exponentially suppressed and a single black hole in our past light cone may be sufficient to activate the decay. Moreover, decaying b…
We search for stable bound states of non-extremal rotating three-charge black holes in five dimensions (Cvetic-Youm black holes) and supertubes. We do this by studying the potential of supertube probes in the non-extremal black hole background and find that generically the marginally bound state of the supersymmetric limit becomes metastable and disappears with non-extremality (higher temperature). However near extremality there is a range of parameters allowing for stable bound states, which have lower energy than the supertube-black hole merger. Angular momentum is crucial for this effect. W…
We present a quantum mechanical study of the bound states of a neutral scalar particle on the curved background described by the Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetime that corresponds to a naked singularity. We show that there occurs both the metastable, \textit{i.e.} decaying bound states and the stable ones. The corresponding energy spectra are calculated in the leading WKB approximation and the comparison with the RN black hole quasinormal mode spectrum is made. The metastable bound states on the naked singularity background turn out to be more long-living than the quasinormal modes for the bla…
One can obtain very large classes of horizonless microstate geometries corresponding to near-extremal black holes by placing probe supertubes whose action has metastable minima inside certain supersymmetric bubbling solutions. We show that these minima can lower their energy when the bubbles move in certain directions in the moduli space, which implies that these near-extremal microstates are in fact unstable once one considers the dynamics of all their degrees of freedom. The decay of these solutions corresponds to Hawking radiation, and we compare the emission rate and frequency to those of …
This paper deals with black holes, bubbles and orbifolds in Gauss-Bonnet theory in five dimensional anti de Sitter space. In particular, we study stable, unstable and metastable phases of black holes from thermodynamical perspective. By comparing bubble and orbifold geometries, we analyse associated instabilities. Assuming AdS/CFT correspondence, we discuss the effects of this higher derivative bulk coupling on a specific matrix model near the critical points of the boundary gauge theory at finite temperature. Finally, we propose another phenomenological model on the boundary which mimics vari…
We establish the existence of stable and metastable stationary black hole bound states at finite temperature and chemical potentials in global and planar four-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We determine a number of features of their holographic duals and argue they represent structural glasses. We map out their thermodynamic landscape in the probe approximation, and show their relaxation dynamics exhibits logarithmic aging, with aging rates determined by the distribution of barriers.
We study the first law of black hole thermodynamics in the presence of surrounding gravitational fields and argue that variations of these fields are naturally incorporated in the first law by defining gravitational tension or gravitational binding energy. We demonstrate that this notion can also be applied in Anti-de Sitter spacetime, in which the surrounding gravitational field is sourced by a cosmological fluid, therefore showing that spacetime volume and gravitational tension encode the same physics as spacetime pressure and black hole volume. We furthermore show that it is possible to int…
We study the beta-deformation of N=4 SYM on S^3 with chemical potentials for the U(1)_R as well as the two global U(1) symmetries. The one-loop effective potential at weak coupling is computed for both the Coulomb and Higgs branches. At near critical chemical potential and small finite temperature, we find a metastable state at the origin of moduli space. On the Higgs branch, this has the interpretation in terms of deconstruction as an extra-dimensional torus which becomes metastable for infinite size and decays to zero size through quantum tunnelling and thermal activation. At strong coupling…
Rapidly rotating Myers-Perry black holes in d>5 dimensions were conjectured to be unstable by Emparan and Myers. In a previous publication, we found numerically the onset of the axisymmetric ultraspinning instability in the singly-spinning Myers-Perry black hole in d=7,8,9. This threshold signals also a bifurcation to new branches of axisymmetric solutions with pinched horizons that are conjectured to connect to the black ring, black Saturn and other families in the phase diagram of stationary solutions. We firmly establish that this instability is also present in d=6 and in d=10,11. The bound…
We construct the first family of microstate geometries of near-extremal black holes, by placing metastable supertubes inside certain scaling supersymmetric smooth microstate geometries. These fuzzballs differ from the classical black hole solution macroscopically at the horizon scale, and for certain probes the fluctuations between various fuzzballs will be visible as thermal noise far away from the horizon. We discuss whether these fuzzballs appear to infalling observers as fuzzballs of fuzz or as fuzzballs of fire. The existence of these solutions suggests that the singularity of non-extrema…
We consider the possibility that small black holes can act as nucleation seeds for the decay of a metastable vacuum, focussing particularly on the Higgs potential. Using a thin-wall bubble approximation for the nucleation process, which is possible when generic quantum gravity corrections are added to the Higgs potential, we show that primordial black holes can stimulate vacuum decay. We demonstrate that for suitable parameter ranges, the vacuum decay process dominates over the Hawking evaporation process. Finally, we comment on the application of these results to vacuum decay seeded by black …
In this paper, we aim to examine the relationship between the unstable circular photon orbit and the thermodynamic phase transition for a rotating Kerr-AdS black hole. On one side, we give a brief review of the phase transition for the Kerr-AdS black hole. The coexistence curve and the metastable curve corresponding to the phase transition are clearly shown. On the other side, we calculate the radius and the angular momentum of the unstable circular orbits for a photon by analyzing the effective potential. Then combining these two sides, we find the following results. i) The radius and the ang…
The Hawking temperature for the Schwarzschild black hole is divergent when the mass of the black hole vanishes; however the corresponding geometry becomes the Minkowski spacetime whose intrinsic temperature is zero. In connection with this issue, we construct a non-singular temperature which follows the Hawking temperature for the large black hole while it vanishes when the black hole completely evaporated. In order for thermodynamic significances of this modified temperature, we calculate thermodynamic quantities and study phase transitions. It turns out that even the small black hole can be …
We study the effective potentials for various probe branes surrounding AdS$_4$ black holes with massive halos in consistent truncations of M-theory on the Sasaki-Einstein$_7$ manifolds $Q^{111}$ and $M^{111}$. These probes are either M2 branes extended in spacetime or "particle-like" probes such as internally wrapped M2 branes and, upon reduction to type IIA string theory, D6 branes corresponding to baryon operators in the dual Chern-Simons theory. We find both global and local minima of the potential outside the horizon, indicating the existence of stable and metastable multicenter AdS black …
From the dynamics of a broad class of classical mean-field glass models one may obtain a quantum model with finite zero-temperature entropy, a quantum transition at zero temperature, and a time-reparametrization (quasi-)invariance in the dynamical equations for correlations. The low eigenvalue spectrum of the resulting quantum model is directly related to the structure and exploration of metastable states in the landscape of the original classical glass model. This mapping reveals deep connections between classical glasses and the properties of SYK-like models.
Multi-spinning higher dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes admit the stable small-large black hole phase transition of van der Waals type. In this paper, we study the exact critical phenomena and phase structure in five-dimensional spacetime. First, we examine the thermodynamic laws in the reduced parameter space and find that they are quite different from the conventional thermodynamic laws. Then based on the reduced laws, the phase structure in different parameter spaces is investigated. The stable and metastable black hole phases are clearly displayed. We present a highly accurate fitting formu…
We investigate the analogue of the Randall-Sundrum brane-world in the case when the bulk contains a black hole. Instead of the static vacuum Minkowski brane of the RS model, we have an Einstein static vacuum brane. We find that the presence of the bulk black hole has a dramatic effect on the gravity that is felt by brane observers. In the RS model, the 5D graviton has a stable localized zero-mode that reproduces 4D gravity on the brane at low energies. With a bulk black hole, there is no such solution -- gravity is delocalized by the 5D horizon. However, the brane does support a discrete spect…
An interpretation to the physics of stable geodesics of massive particles in black hole backgrounds has been recently proposed in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. It was argued that the existence of stable orbits indicates that the dual state does not thermalize on a thermal time scale and the bulk excitations can be interpreted as metastable states in the dual field theory. Here we study motion of massive particles in the background of the D-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in the Einstein-Lovelock theory. We show that, unlike the asymptotically flat case,…
We present an exact one-loop calculation of the tunneling process in Euclidean quantum gravity describing creation of black hole pairs in a de Sitter universe. Such processes are mediated by $S^2\times S^2$ gravitational instantons giving an imaginary contribution to the partition function. The required energy is provided by the expansion of the universe. We utilize the thermal properties of de Sitter space to describe the process as the decay of a metastable thermal state. Within the Euclidean path integral approach to gravity, we explicitly determine the spectra of the fluctuation operators,…
Generalizing previous quantum gravity results for Schwarzschild black holes from 4 to D>4 spacetime dimensions yields an energy spectrum E_n = n^{1-1/(D-2)} sigma E_P, n=1,2,..., sigma = O(1). Assuming the degeneracies of these levels to be given by g^n, g>1, leads to a partition function which is the same as that of the primitive droplet nucleation model for 1st-order phase transitions in D-2 spatial dimensions. Exploiting the well-known properties of the so-called critical droplets of this model immediately leads to the Hawking temperature and the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of Schwarzschild …
