We construct an approximate solution for an asymptotically flat, neutral, thin rotating black ring in any dimension D>=5 by matching the near-horizon solution for a bent boosted black string, to a linearized gravity solution away from the horizon. The rotating black ring solution has a regular horizon of topology S^1 x S^{D-3} and incorporates the balancing condition of the ring as a zero-tension condition. For D=5 our method reproduces the thin ring limit of the exact black ring solution. For D>=6 we show that the black ring has a higher entropy than the Myers-Perry black hole in the ultra-spinning regime. By exploiting the correspondence between ultra-spinning black holes and black membranes on a two-torus, we take steps towards qualitatively completing the phase diagram of rotating blackfolds with a single angular momentum. We are led to propose a connection between MP black holes and black rings, and between MP black holes and black Saturns, through merger transitions involving two kinds of `pinched' black holes. More generally, the analogy suggests an infinite number of pinched black holes of spherical topology leading to a complicated pattern of connections and mergers between phases.
In this paper we continue our analysis of arXiv:1308.1478[hep-th] and study in detail the parameter space of three families of doubly spinning black ring solutions: balanced black ring, unbalanced ring and dipole-charged balanced black rings. In all these three families the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) ring appears in the vanishing limit of the dimensionful parameter of the solution which measures the ring size. We study the near horizon limit of the EVH black rings and for all three cases we find a (pinching orbifold) AdS$_3$ throat with the AdS$_3$ radius $\ell^2=8 G_5 M/(3π)$ where $M$ …
We present detailed physics analyses of two different 4+1-dimensional asymptotically flat vacuum black hole solutions with spin in two independent planes: the doubly spinning black ring and the bicycling black ring system ("bi-rings"). The latter is a new solution describing two concentric orthogonal rotating black rings which we construct using the inverse scattering technique. We focus particularly on extremal zero-temperature limits of the solutions. We construct the phase diagram of currently known zero-temperature vacuum black hole solutions with a single event horizon, and discuss the no…
We present new supersymmetric solutions of five-dimensional minimal supergravity that describe concentric black rings with an optional black hole at the common centre. Configurations of two black rings are found which have the same conserved charges as a single rotating black hole; these black rings can have a total horizon area less than, equal to, or greater than the black hole with the same charges. A numerical investigation of these particular black ring solutions suggests that they do not have closed timelike curves.
We construct the most generic three-charge, three-dipole-charge, BPS black-ring solutions in a Taub-NUT background. These solutions depend on seven charges and six moduli, and interpolate between a four-dimensional black hole and a five-dimensional black ring. They are also instrumental in determining the correct microscopic description of the five-dimensional BPS black rings.
A string theory description of near extremal black rings is proposed. The entropy is computed and the thermodynamic properties are derived for a large family of black rings that have not yet been constructed in supergravity. It is also argued that the most general black ring in N=8 supergravity has 21 parameters up to duality.
New rotating dyonic dipole black ring solutions are derived in 5D Einstein-dilaton gravity with antisymmetric forms. The black rings are analyzed and their thermodynamics is discussed. New dyonic black string solutions are also presented.
We discuss some aspects of the recently discovered BPS black ring solutions in terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the type IIB frame in which the black ring carries the charges of the D1-D5-P system, we propose a microscopic description of the rings in the orbifold CFT governing this system. In our proposal, the CFT effectively splits into two parts: one part captures the supertube-like properties of the ring, and the other captures the entropy. We can also understand the black ring entropy by relating the geometry near the ring to BPS black holes in four dimensions, although this latter …
The Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of an extremal vacuum black ring is derived from a microscopic counting of states. The entropy of extremal Kaluza-Klein black holes with ergospheres is also derived.
Five dimensional neutral rotating black rings are described from a Randall-Sundrum brane world perspective in the bulk black string framework. To this end we consider a rotating black string extension of a five dimensional black ring into the bulk of a six dimensional Randall-Sundrum brane world with a single four brane. The bulk solution intercepts the four brane in a five dimensional black ring with the usual curvature singularity on the brane. The bulk geodesics restricted to the plane of rotation of the black ring are constructed and their projections on the four brane match with the usual…
We study the boundary value problem for asymptotically flat stationary black ring solutions to the five-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations. Assuming the existence of two additional commuting axial Killing vector fields and the horizon topology of $S^1\times S^2$, we show that the only asymptotically flat black ring solution with a regular horizon is the Pomeransky-Sen'kov black ring solution.
We present a new stationary, asymptotically flat solution of 5D Einstein-Maxwell gravity describing a Saturn-like black object: a rotating black hole surrounded by a rotating dipole black ring. The solution is generated by combining the vacuum black Saturn solution and the vacuum black ring solution with appropriately chosen parameters. Some basic properties of the solution are analyzed and the basic quantities are calculated.
We construct smooth supergravity solutions describing a BPS black ring with a BPS black hole centered at an arbitrary distance above the ring. We find that as one moves the black hole the entropy of the ring remains constant, but the angular momentum coming from the supergravity fluxes changes. Our solutions also show that in order to merge a BPS black ring with a BPS black hole one has to increase one of the angular momenta of the ring, and that the result of the merger is always a BMPV black hole. We also find a class of mergers that are thermodynamically reversible, and comment on their phy…
We systematically derive the asymptotically flat five dimensional black rings in EMd gravity by using the sigma model structure of the dimensionally reduced field equations. New non-asymptotically flat EMd black ring solutions in five dimensions are also constructed and their physical properties are analyzed.
We use the recently-constructed explicit duality transformation that relates a rotating anti-D6-D4-D2-D0 black hole solution to a rotating M5-M2-P black string to construct a non-supersymmetric black ring in Taub-NUT that has two angular momenta, as well as M2 charges and M5 dipole moments. This is the first black ring solution that has both dipole charges and rotation along the S^2 of the horizon, and hence can be thought of as the "Pomeransky-Senkov" version of the M5-M2 black ring in Taub-NUT. Its physics should provide a testing ground for the applicability of the blackfold approach to cha…
General regular black ring solution with two angular momenta is presented, found by the inverse scattering problem method. The mass, angular momenta and the event horizon volume are given explicitly as functions of the metric parameters.
We examine certain two-charge supersymmetric states with spin in five-dimensional string theories which can be viewed as small black rings when the gravitational coupling is large. Using the 4D-5D connection, these small black rings correspond to four-dimensional non-spinning small black holes. Using this correspondence, we compute the degeneracy of the microstates of the small black rings exactly and show that it is in precise agreement with the macroscopic degeneracy to all orders in an asymptotic expansion. Furthermore, we analyze the five-dimensional small black ring geometry and show qual…
It was shown in arXiv:2006.16163 that the effective stationary membrane equations from the large $D$ membrane paradigm at the first order admit black ring solutions in flat and AdS cases, but the de Sitter solution obtained in arXiv:0806.1954 lies outside the domain of their applicability. In this short note the static de Sitter black ring is obtained from the second order membrane paradigm, and it satisfies the equilibrium condition for the thin ring solution of arXiv:0806.1954. This provides a segue into the stationary black rings at the second order.
Recently, Guica, Huang, Li, and Strominger considered an R^2 correction to the entropy of a black ring, and found a mismatch between supergravity and the CFT. However, such a comparison should take into account the subtle distinction between the asymptotic charges of the black ring and the charges entering the CFT description. We show that using the correct charges yields perfect agreement.
Supersymmetric black ring solutions of five dimensional supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets are constructed. The solutions are asymptotically flat and describe configurations of concentric black rings which have regular horizons with topology $S^1 \times S^2$ and no closed time-like curves at the horizons.
We construct a seven-parameter family of supergravity solutions that describe non-supersymmetric black rings and black tubes with three charges, three dipoles and two angular momenta. The black rings have regular horizons and non-zero temperature. They are naturally interpreted as the supergravity descriptions of thermally excited configurations of supertubes, specifically of supertubes with two charges and one dipole, and of supertubes with three charges and two dipoles. In order to fully describe thermal excitations near supersymmetry of the black supertubes with three charges and three dipo…
We present a solution of the vacuum Einstein's equations in five dimensions corresponding to a black ring with horizon topology S^1 x S^2 and rotation in the azimuthal direction of the S^2. This solution has a regular horizon up to a conical singularity, which can be placed either inside the ring or at infinity. This singularity arises due to the fact that this black ring is not balanced. In the infinite radius limit we correctly reproduce the Kerr black string, and taking another limit we recover the Myers-Perry black hole with a single angular momentum.
We discuss the application of the solitonic techniques to the 5D Einstein-Maxwell gravity. As an illustration we construct an exact solution describing two concentric rotating dipole black rings. The properties of the solution are investigated.
In d>4 dimensions, one can argue for the existence of small black rings using a scaling argument. We apply the same scaling argument to the d=4 case and demonstrate that it fails to say anything about the existence of d=4 small black rings, because stringy corrections get out of control. General relativity theorems say that there does not exist a black hole with toroidal topology for d=4, but we interpret this as saying that, for d=4 small black rings, stringy corrections are crucial which invalidate the assumptions those theorems are based on.
We investigate the Gregory-Laflamme instability for black strings carrying KK-momentum along the internal direction. We demonstrate a simple kinematical relation between the thresholds of the classical instability for the boosted and static black strings. We also find that Sorkin's critical dimension depends on the internal velocity and in fact disappears for sufficiently large boosts. Our analysis implies the existence of an analogous instability for the five-dimensional black ring of Emparan and Reall. We also use our results for boosted black strings to construct a simple model of the black…
We study the charged slowly rotating black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell theory in the large dimensions. By using the 1/D expansion in the near region of the black hole we obtain the effective equations for the charged slowly rotating black holes. The effective equations describe the charged black ring, the charged slowly rotating Myers-Perry black hole and the charged slowly boosted black string as stationary solutions. By embedding the solution of the effective equations into the flat spacetime background in the ring coordinate we obtain the charged black ring solution at large D analyticall…
An example of entropy enigma with a controlled CFT dual was recently studied in arXiv:1108.0411. The enigmatic bulk configurations, considered within the STU model, can be mapped under spectral flow into black rings with three monopole and dipole charges. Even though the bulk and CFT configurations existed in the same region of parameter space, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the bulk configurations was found to be lower than the microscopic entropy from the CFT. While it is possible that the difference in entropy is due to the bulk and boundary configurations being at different points in th…
A surprising new seven-parameter supersymmetric black ring solution of five-dimensional supergravity has recently been discovered. In this paper, M-theory is used to give an exact microscopic accounting of its entropy.
We construct new exact solutions to 5D Einstein-Maxwell equations describing sequences of Kaluza-Klein bubbles and dipole black rings. The solutions are generated by 2-soliton transformations from vacuum black ring - bubble sequences. The properties of the solutions are investigated. We also derive the Smarr-like relations and the mass and tension first laws in the general case for such configurations of Kaluza-Klein bubbles and dipole black rings. The novel moment is the appearance of the magnetic flux in the Smarr-like relations and the first laws.
In this note we set-up an explicit 5D construction of AdS-fragmentation, whereby a single black ring splits-up into a multi-black ring configuration. Furthermore it is seen that these fragmented rings are equivalent to a direct 5D lift of 4D multi-center black holes. Along the way we also determine the 4D/5D transformations relevant for multi-center charges. It is seen that the physical charges involved in black ring fragmentation are Page charges arising due to 5D Chern-Simons terms. As an application of these methods, we reproduce the total angular momentum of concentric black rings, origina…
It has recently been shown that the M theory lift of a IIA 4D BPS Calabi-Yau black hole is a 5D BPS black hole spinning at the center of a Taub-NUT-flux geometries, and a certain linear relation between 4D and 5D BPS partition functions was accordingly proposed. In the present work we fortify and enrich this proposal by showing that the M-theory lift of the general 4D multi-black hole geometry are 5D black rings in a Taub-NUT-flux geometry.
We construct solutions to the relativistic Navier-Stokes equations that describe the long wavelength collective dynamics of the deconfined plasma phase of N=4 Yang Mills theory compactified down to d=3 on a Scherk-Schwarz circle and higher dimensional generalisations. Our solutions are stationary, axially symmetric spinning balls and rings of plasma. These solutions, which are dual to (yet to be constructed) rotating black holes and black rings in Scherk-Schwarz compactified AdS(5) and AdS(6), and have properties that are qualitatively similar to those of black holes and black rings in flat fi…
We use the conservation of the renormalized boundary stress-energy tensor to obtain the equilibrium condition for a general (thin or fat) black ring solution. We also investigate the role of the spatial stress in the thermodynamics of deformation within the quasilocal formalism of Brown and York and discuss the relation with other methods. In particular, we discuss the quantum statistical relation for the unbalanced black ring solution.
We present supersymmetric solutions describing black holes with non-vanishing angular momentum in four dimensional asymptotically flat space. The solutions are obtained by Kaluza-Klein reduction of five-dimensional supersymmetric black rings wrapped on the fiber of a Taub-NUT space. We show that in the four-dimensional description the singularity of the nut can be hidden behind a regular black hole event horizon and thereby obtain an explicit example of a non-static multi-black hole solution in asymptotically flat four dimensions.
We determine the most general near-horizon geometry of a supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black hole solution of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity that admits two rotational symmetries. The near-horizon geometry is that of the supersymmetric, topologically spherical, black hole solution of Chong et al. This proves that regular supersymmetric anti-de Sitter black rings with two rotational symmetries do not exist in minimal supergravity. However, we do find a solution corresponding to the near-horizon geometry of a supersymmetric black ring held in equilibrium by a conic…
Five dimensional Einstein gravity vacuum solutions in general fall into two classes of black rings with horizon topology S^2 \times S^1, and black holes with horizon topology S^3. These solutions are specified by their mass and two spins. There are "overlapping" regions of this parameter space where one has extremal rings and holes of the same spins. We show that for such regions the hole has generically a larger entropy than the ring, and likewise, the central charge of the proposed chiral 2d CFT dual to the hole is larger than that of the ring. For special places of this overlapping region w…
We construct new supersymmetric multi-black ring solutions on the Eguchi-Hanson base space as solutions of the five-dimensional minimal supergravity. The space-time has an asymptotically locally Euclidean time slice, i.e., it has the spatial infinity with the topology of the lens space $L(2;1)=S^3/Z_2$. The configurations of black rings are restricted by the requirement of the absence of a Dirac-Misner string everywhere outside horizons. Especially, in the case of two black rings, the solutions have the limit to a pair of rotating black holes with the horizon topology of S^3.
We construct new supersymmetric black ring solutions on the Eguchi-Hanson base space as solutions of five-dimensional minimal supergravity. The solutions have the same two angular momentum components and the asymptotic structure on timeslices is asymptotically locally Euclidean. The S^1-direction of the black ring is along the equator on a S^2-bolt on the Eguchi-Hanson space. We also investigate the limit to a black hole, which describes the BMPV black hole with the topology of the lens space L(2;1)=S^3/Z_2.
In this brief note we show that the horizon entropy of the largest known class of non-supersymmetric extremal black rings, with up to six parameters, is exactly reproduced for all values of the ring radius using the same conformal field theory of the four-charge four-dimensional black hole. A particularly simple case is a dipole black ring without any conserved charges. The mass gets renormalized, but the first corrections it receives can be easily understood as an interaction potential energy. Finally, we stress that even if the entropy is correctly reproduced, this only implies that one sect…
We construct a new exact solution to the 5D Einstein equations describing rotating black ring with a single angular momentum surrounded by two Kaluza-Klein bubbles. The solution is generated by 2-soliton Bäcklund transformation. Its physical properties are computed and analyzed. The corresponding static solution, the rotating black string and the boosted black string are reproduced as limits.
In this paper we investigate the non-linear sigma model arising in the reduction of D = 5 supergravity to D = 3, and present the application of this sigma model to supersymmetric black ring solutions in five-dimensional minimal supergravity. With the ansatz of stationary solutions with $R \times U(1)\times U(1)$ isometry, we obtain a two-dimensional Lagrangian corresponding to geodesic motion of a string-like object on the coset $G_{2(+2)}/SO(4)$, and study the algebra of conserved charges and supersymmetry constraints of supersymmetric black rings. We also obtain the semi-classical wave funct…
Recent research shows that Hawking radiation can be treated as a quantum tunnelling process, and Hawking temperature of Dirac particles across the horizon of a black hole can be correctly recovered via fermions tunnelling method. In this paper, motivated by fermions tunnelling method, we attempt to apply the analysis to derive Hawking radiation of Dirac particles via tunnelling from black ring solutions of 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity theory. Finally, it is interesting to find as in black hole cases, fermions tunnelling can also result in correct Hawking temperatures for the …
The ``small'' black ring in 5D obtained by giving angular momentum to the D1-D5 system compactified on S^1 x K3 is a very interesting object in the sense that it does not have an event horizon in the supergravity limit whereas it microscopically has a finite entropy. The microscopic origin of this small black ring can be analyzed in detail since it is constructed by adding angular momentum to the well-studied D1-D5 system. On the other hand, its macroscopic, geometrical picture is difficult to study directly. In this note, by duality transformations and the 4D-5D connection, we relate this 5D …
We demonstrate a solution generating technique, modulo some constraints, for a large class of smooth supergravity solutions with the same asymptotic charges as a five dimensional 3-charge BPS black hole or black ring, dual to a D1/D5/P system. These solutions are characterized by a harmonic function with both positive and negative poles, which induces a geometric transition whereby singular sources have disappeared and all of the net charge at infinity is sourced by fluxes through two-cycles joining the poles of the harmonic function.
We construct black ring solutions in five-dimensional $U(1)^3$ supergravity which carry three dipole charges, three electric charges and one angular momentum parameter. These solutions are written in a form that is sufficiently compact that their global and thermodynamic properties can be studied explicitly. In particular, we find that the Smarr formula is obeyed regardless of whether or not conical singularities are present, whereas the first law of thermodynamics holds only in the absence of conical singularities. We also present black ring solutions with three background magnetic fields.
We show how to obtain a non-supersymmetric black ring configuration in the framework of 5D Heterotic String Theory using the matrix Ernst potential (MEP) formalism, which enables us to include non-trivial dilaton, gauge and antisymmetric tensor fields.
We study the near horizon geometry of black ring solutions in five-dimensional U(1)^3 supergravity with three electric dipole charges and one angular momentum. We consider the extremal vanishing horizon (EVH) limit of these solutions and show that the near horizon geometries develop locally AdS_3 throats which at the near-EVH near horizon limit the AdS_3 factor turns to a BTZ black hole. By analysing the first law of thermodynamics for black rings we show that at EVH limit it reduces to the first law of thermodynamics for BTZ black holes. Using the AdS3/CFT2 duality, we propose a dual CFT to d…
For the five dimensional N=2 black rings, we study the supersymmetry enhancement and identify the global supergroup of the near horizon geometry. We show that the global part of the supergroup is OSp(4*|2)X U(1) which is similar to the small black string. We show that results obtained by applying the entropy function formalism, the c-extremization approach and the Brown-Henneaux method to the black ring solution are in agreement with the microscopic entropy calculation.
We study higher-order corrections to two BPS solutions of 5D supergravity, namely the supersymmetric black ring and the spinning black hole. Due in part to our current relatively limited understanding of F-type terms in 5D supergravity, the nature of these corrections is less clear than that of their 4D cousins. Effects of certain $R^2$ terms found in Calabi-Yau compactification of M-theory are specifically considered. For the case of the black ring, for which the microscopic origin of the entropy is generally known, the corresponding higher order macroscopic correction to the entropy is found…
We derive new rotating, non-asymptotically flat black ring solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with dilaton coupling constant $α=\sqrt{8/3}$ which arises from a six-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. As a limiting case we also find new rotating, non-asymptotically flat five-dimensional black holes. The solutions are analyzed and the mass, angular momentum and charge are computed. A Smarr-like relation is found. It is shown that the first law of black hole thermodynamics is satisfied.
In this work, we study the non-equilibrium dynamics of Φ-spinning black rings within the quasilocal formalism. We adopt the counterterm method and compute the renormalized boundary stress-energy tensor. By considering the conservation of this tensor, the condition for removing the conical singularity at spatial infinity is derived. It is subsequently shown that a Φ-spinning black ring cannot be kept in a state of equilibrium, which is consistent with the physical interpretation that the angular momentum is on the plane orthogonal to the ring and there is no force to balance the tension and gra…
We study scalar field perturbations on the background of non-supersymmetric black rings and of supersymmetric black rings. In the infinite-radius limit of these geometries, we are able to separate the wave equation, and to study wave phenomena in its vicinities. In this limit, we show that (i) both geometries are stable against scalar field perturbations, (ii) the absorption cross-section for scalar fields is equal to the area of the event horizon in the supersymmetric case, and proportional to it in the non-supersymmetric situation.
It has been proven in arXiv:1303.0853 that all regular supersymmetric near-horizon geometries in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity admit automatic supersymmetry enhancement. Using this result, the integrability conditions associated with the existence of the additional supersymmetry are analysed, and the near-horizon geometries are determined explicitly. We show that they all correspond to previously constructed examples. Hence, there are no supersymmetric black ring solutions in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity.
We construct all eleven-dimensional, three-charge BPS solutions that preserve a fixed, standard set of supersymmetries. Our solutions include all BPS three-charge rotating black holes, black rings, supertubes, as well as arbitrary superpositions of these objects. We find very large families of black rings and supertubes with profiles that follow arbitrary closed curves in the spatial R^4 transverse to the branes. The black rings copiously violate black hole uniqueness. The supertube solutions are completely regular, and generically have small curvature. They also have the same asymptotics as t…
We present supergravity solutions for 1/8-supersymmetric black supertubes with three charges and three dipoles. Their reduction to five dimensions yields supersymmetric black rings with regular horizons and two independent angular momenta. The general solution contains seven independent parameters and provides the first example of non-uniqueness of supersymmetric black holes. In ten dimensions, the solutions can be realized as D1-D5-P black supertubes. We also present a worldvolume construction of a supertube that exhibits three dipoles explicitly. This description allows an arbitrary cross-se…
Using recently proposed new solution generating technique, we construct the charged version of Pomeranski-Senkov doubly rotating black ring in the $U(1)^3$ five-dimensional supergravity. For arbitrary values of charges the solution is unbalanced, but the Dirac-Misner string is removed when two of the charges are set to zero. In this particular case our solution can be uplifted to some solution of six-dimensional vacuum gravity.
In this note we present (electrically) charged dilatonic black ring solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in five dimensions and we consider their physical properties. These solutions are static and as in the neutral case possess a conical singularity. We show how one may remove the conical singularity by application of a Harrison transformation, which physically corresponds to supporting the charged ring with an electric field. Finally, we discuss the slowly rotating case for arbitrary dilaton coupling.
In this talk, I will summarize recent developments in 5-dimensional supergravity. Apart from black ring solutions, we will discuss the way of obtaining regular (bubbling) solutions with the same charges as black holes. We outline the procedure for the solution in five and four dimensions. Finally we explore the close relationship between 4- and 5-dimensional supersymmetric stationary solutions.
Previously the five dimensional $S^1$-rotating black rings have been superposed in a concentric way by some solitonic methods, and regular systems of two $S^1$-rotating black rings were constructed by the authors and then Evslin and Krishnan (we called these solutions "black di-rings"). In this place we show some characteristics of the solutions of five dimensional black di-rings, especially in thermodynamic equilibrium. After the summary of the di-ring expressions and their physical quantities, first we comment on the equivalence of the two different solution sets of the black di-rings. Then …
A black ring is a five-dimensional black hole with an event horizon of topology S1 x S2. We provide an introduction to the description of black rings in general relativity and string theory. Novel aspects of the presentation include a new approach to constructing black ring coordinates and a critical review of black ring microscopics.
We study non-axisymmetric linearised gravitational perturbations of the Emparan-Reall black ring using numerical methods. We find an unstable mode whose onset lies within the "fat" branch of the black ring and continues into the "thin" branch. Together with previous results using Penrose inequalities that fat black rings are unstable, this provides numerical evidence that the entire black ring family is unstable.
