We employ the analytical results for the spatial transformation of the electromagnetic fields to obtain and analyze explicit expressions for the structure of the electromagnetic fields in invisibility cloaks, beam splitters, and field concentrators. We study the efficiency of nonideal electromagnetic cloaks and discuss the effect of scattering losses on the cloak invisibility.
Based on a coordinate transformation approach, Pendry {\it et al.} have reported electromagnetically anisotropic and inhomogeneous shells that, in theory, completely shield an interior structure of arbitrary size from electromagnetic fields without perturbing the external fields. We report full-wave simulations of the cylindrical version of this cloaking structure using ideal and nonideal (but physically realizable) electromagnetic parameters in an effort to understand the challenges of realizing such a structure in practice. The simulations indicate that the performance of the electromagnetic…
Electromagnetic cloaks are devices that can be used to reduce the total scattering cross section of various objects. An ideal cloak removes all scattering from an object and thus makes this object "invisible" to the electromagnetic fields that impinge on the object. However, ideal cloaking appears to be possible only at a single frequency. To study cloaking from an electromagnetic pulse we consider propagation of a pulse inside a waveguide with a cloaked metal object inside. There are several ways to achieve cloaking and in this paper we study three such methods, namely, the coordinate-transfo…
Electromagnetic invisibility cloak requires material with anisotropic distribution of the constitutive parameters deduced from a geometrical transformation as first proposed by Pendry et al. [Science 312, 1780 (2006)]. In this paper, we proposed a useful method to realize the required radius-dependent, anisotropic material parameters and to construct an electromagnetic cloak through concentric layered structure of thin, alternating layers of homogeneous isotropic materials. With proper design of the permittivity or the thickness ratio of the alternating layers, we demonstrated the low-reflecti…
Electromagnetic invisible devices usually designed by transformation optics are rather complicated in material parameters and not suitable for general applications. Recently a topology optimized cloak based on level-set method was proposed to realize nearly perfect cloaking by Fujii et al [Appl. Phys. Lett. 102, 251106 (2013)]. In this work we experimentally implemented this idea and fabricated a unidirectional cloak with a relative large invisible region made of single dielectric material. Good cloaking performance was verified through measurement which consists very well with numerical simul…
An analytical method of electromagnetic wave interactions with a general radially anisotropic cloak is established. It is able to deal with arbitrary parameters ($ε_r(r)$, $μ_r(r)$, $ε_t(r)$ and $μ_t(r)$) of a radially anisotropic inhomogeneous shell. The general cloaking condition is proposed from the wave relations for the first time. We derive the parameters of a novel class of spherical nonlinear cloaks and examine its invisibility performance by the proposed method at various nonlinear situations. Spherical metamaterial cloaks with improved invisibility performance is achieved with optima…
We propose a generalization of the two-dimensional eikonal-limit cloak derived from a conformal transformation to three dimensions. The proposed cloak is a spherical shell composed of only isotropic media; it operates in the transmission mode and requires no mirror or ground plane. Unlike the well-known omnidirectional spherical cloaks, it may reduce visibility of an arbitrary object only for a very limited range of observation angles. In the short-wavelength limit, this cloaking structure restores not only the trajectories of incident rays, but also their phase, which is a necessary ingredien…

In the past years quasi-conformal mapping has been typically used to design broadband electromagnetic cloaks. However, this technique has some inherit practical limitations such as the lateral beam shift, rendering the device visible or difficult to hide a large object. In this work we circumvent these issues by using strict conformal mapping to build the first isotropic cloak. Microwave near-field measurement shows that our device (with dielectric constant larger than unity everywhere) has a very good cloaking performance and a broad frequency response. The present dielectric approach could b…
Invisibility cloaks of light, which used to be confined to the imagination, have now been turned into a scientific reality, thanks to the enabling theoretical tools of transformation optics and conformal mapping. Inspired by those theoretical works, the experimental realisation of electromagnetic invisibility cloaks has been reported at various electromagnetic frequencies. All the invisibility cloaks demonstrated thus far, however, have relied on nano- or micro-fabricated artificial composite materials with spatially varying electromagnetic properties, which limit the size of the cloaked regio…
The technique of applying form-invariant, spatial coordinate transformations of Maxwell's equations can facilitate the design of structures with unique electromagnetic or optical functionality. Here, we illustrate the transformation-optical approach in the designs of a square electromagnetic cloak and an omni-directional electromagnetic field concentrator. The transformation equations are described and the functionality of the devices is numerically confirmed by two-dimensional finite element simulations. The two devices presented demonstrate that the transformation optic approach leads to the…
A new recipe for concealing objects from detection is suggested. Different with traditional cloak which deflects light around the core of the cloak to make the object inside invisible, our cloak guides the light to penetrate the core of the cloak but without striking some region of the cloak shell - the so called folded region. Full wave analytical calculation shows that this cloak will lead to a scattering enhancement instead of scattering reduction in contrast to the traditional cloak; the scattered field distribution can also be changed as if the scatterer is moved from its original positio…
We give a comprehensive study on regularized approximate electromagnetic cloaking via the transformation optics approach. The following aspects are investigated: (i) near-invisibility cloaking of passive media as well as active/radiating sources; (ii) the existence of cloak- busting inclusions without lossy medium lining; (iii) overcoming the cloaking-busts by employing a lossy layer outside the cloaked region; (iv) the frequency dependence of the cloaking performances. We address these issues and connect the obtained asymptotic results to singular ideal cloaking. Numerical verifications and d…
We propose a general method to circumvent the singularity of arbitrary 2D cloaks, which arises from infinitely large values of material parameters at inner boundaries. The presented method is based on the deformation view of the transformation design method. It is shown that by adjusting the principle stretch out of the cloaking plane, 2D cloaks of arbitrary shapes without singularity can be constructed. It is also demonstrated that the method based on the equivalent dispersion relation and the design method for nonsingular 2D cloak from mirror-symmetric cross section of 3D cloak can be derive…
In this paper, we present an efficient spectral-element method (SEM) for solving general two-dimensional Helmholtz equations in anisotropic media, with particular applications in accurate simulation of polygonal invisibility cloaks, concentrators and circular rotators arisen from the field of transformation electromagnetics (TE). In practice, we adopt a transparent boundary condition (TBC) characterized by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map to reduce wave propagation in an unbounded domain to a bounded domain. We then introduce a semi-analytic technique to integrate the global TBC with local c…
The electromagnetic characteristics of plane-transformed invisibility cloaks are quantitatively studied in this paper. We take elliptical cylindrical cloak as the example, and use an elliptical cylindrical wave expansion method to obtain the scattered field. It is demonstrated that an ideal elliptical cylindrical cloak is inherently visible. Noticeable field scattering and penetration will be induced when the cloak is exposed directly to an electromagnetic wave. However, as long as the cloak consists of a perfect electric conducting lining at the interior surface, perfect invisibility can stil…
The electromagnetic field solution for a spherical invisibility cloak with an active device inside is established. Extraordinary electric and magnetic surface voltages are induced at the inner boundary of a spherical cloak, which prevent electromagnetic waves from going out. The phase and handness of polarized waves obliquely incident on such boundaries is kept in the reflected waves. The surface voltages due to an electric dipole inside the concealed region are found equal to the auxiliary scalar potentials at the inner boundary, which consequently gain physical counterparts in this case.
The onset of transformation optics has opened avenues for designing of a plenitude of applications related to propagation of electromagnetic waves in anisotropic media. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed using a coordinate transformation and a piecewise function for the purpose of designing a three dimensional cloak having an arbitrary geometry which could be convex or non-convex in nature. The surfaces of the cloak as well as of the body under consideration are assumed to be conformal to each other. For an arbitrary geometry, the coordinate system needed to model the surface can be a non…
The concept of an invisibility cloak is a fixture of science fiction, fantasy, and the collective imagination. However, a real device that could hide an object from sight in visible light from absolutely any viewpoint would be extremely challenging to build. The main obstacle to creating such a cloak is the coupling of the electromagnetic components of light, which would necessitate the use of complex materials with specific permittivity and permeability tensors. Previous cloaking solutions have involved circumventing this obstacle by functioning either in static (or quasi-static) fields where…
In this paper, we propose a new electromagnetic (EM) GL double layered cloak. The GL double layered cloak is consist of two sphere annular layers, $R_1 \le r \le R_2$ and $R_2 \le r \le R_3$. Two type cloak materials are proposed and installed in the each layer, respectively. The outer layer cloak of the GL double layered cloak has the invisible function, the inner layer cloak has fully absorption function. The GL double layered metamaterials are weak degenerative and weak dispersive. When the source is located outside of the GL double layered cloak, the excited EM wave field propagation outsi…
Invisibility cloaking not only catches the human imagination, but also promises fascinating applications in optics and photonics. By manipulating electromagnetic waves with metamaterials, researchers have been able to realize electromagnetic cloaking in the microwave, terahertz and optical regimes. Nevertheless, the complex design and fabrication process, narrow bandwidth, and high intrinsic losses in the metamaterial-based cloaks have imposed intractable limitations on their realistic applications. Seeking new approaches to overcome these perceived disadvantages is in progress. Here by using …
The GL electromagnetic (EM) modeling is used to simulate the 3D EM full wave field propagation through cloaks. The 3D GL simulation of the EM wave field excited by a point source outside of the cloaks has been done. The simulation of the EM wave field from the point source excitation inside of the cloak device is presented in this paper. By using the GL modeling simulation, we found a phenomenon that there is no Maxwell EM wave field which is excited by nonzero local sources inside of the single layer cloaked concealment. The theoretical proof of the phenomenon by GL method is proposed in this…
Beginning with a straightforward formulation of electromagnetic cloaking that reduces to a boundary value problem involving a single Maxwell first-order differential equation, explicit formulae for the relative permittivity-permeability dyadic and fields of spherical and circular cylindrical annular cloaks are derived in terms of general compressed radial coordinate functions. The general formulation is based on the requirements that the cloaking occurs for all possible incident fields and that the cloaks with frequency w > 0 have continuous tangential E and H fields across their outer surface…
We investigate electromagnetic scattering and plasmonic cloaking in a system composed by a dielectric cylinder coated with a magneto-optical shell. In the long-wavelength limit we demonstrate that the application of an external magnetic field can not only switch on and off the cloaking mechanism but also mitigate losses, as the absorption cross-section is shown to be minimal precisely at the cloaking operation frequency band. We also show that the angular distribution of the scattered radiation can be effectively controlled by applying an external magnetic field, allowing for a swift change in…
There is currently a great deal of interest in the invisibility cloaks recently proposed by Pendry et al. that are based in the transformation approach. They obtained their results using first order transformations. In recent papers Hendi et al. and Cai et al. considered invisibility cloaks with high order transformations. In this paper we study high order electromagnetic invisibility cloaks in transformation media obtained by high order transformations from general anisotropic media. We consider the case where there is a finite number of spherical cloaks located in different points in space. …
The coordinate transformation offers a remarkable way to design cloaks that can steer electromagnetic fields so as to prevent waves from penetrating into the {\em cloaked region} (denoted by $Ω_0$, where the objects inside are invisible to observers outside). The ideal circular and elliptic cylindrical cloaked regions are blown up from a point and a line segment, respectively, so the transformed material parameters and the corresponding coefficients of the resulted equations are highly singular at the cloaking boundary $\partial Ω_0$. The electric field or magnetic field is not continuous acro…
In an electromagnetic cloak based on a transformation approach, reduced sets of material properties are generally favored due to their easier implementation in reality, although a seemingly inevitable drawback of undesired reflection exists in such cloaks. Here we suggest using high-order transformations to create smooth moduli at the outer boundary of the cloak, therefore completely eliminating the detrimental scattering within the limit of geometric optics. We apply this scheme to a non-magnetic cylindrical cloak and demonstrate that the scattered field is reduced substantially in a cloak wi…
There is currently a great deal of interest in the theoretical and practical possibility of cloaking objects from the observation by electromagnetic waves. The basic idea of these invisibility devices \cite{glu1, glu2, le},\cite{pss1} is to use anisotropic {\it transformation media} whose permittivity and permeability $\var^{λν}, μ^{λν}$, are obtained from the ones, $\var_0^{λν}, μ^{λν}_0$, of isotropic media, by singular transformations of coordinates. In this paper we study electromagnetic cloaking in the time-domain using the formalism of time-dependent scattering theory. This formalism all…
We demonstrate in this letter a unique approach for watching outside while hiding in a carpet cloaking based on transformation optics. Unlike conventional carpet cloaking, which screens all the incident electromagnetic waves, we break the cloak and allow incident light get into the carpet. Hence outside information is detected inside the cloak. To recover the invisible cloaking, complementary techniques are applied in the broken space. Consequently, a hiding-inside-and-watching-outside (HIWO) carpet cloak is sewed, which works as a perfectly invisible cloaking and allows surveillance of the ou…
In this paper, we propose a novel electromagnetic (EM) cloaking structure that consists of two annular layers between three spherical shells and model its performance numerically and theoretically by using a Global and Local EM field (GL) method. The two annular layers contain distinct cloaking materials: the outer layer provides invisibility; the inner layer is fully absorbing. The cloaking materials are weakly degenerative. The wavefield from an EM source located outside the cloak propagates as in free space outside the outer shell, never be disturbed by the cloak and does not penetrate into…
Coordinate-transformation cloaking is based on the design of a metamaterial shell made of an anisotropic, spatially inhomogeneous "transformation medium" that allows rerouting the impinging wave around a given region of space. In its original version, it is generally believed that, in the ideal limit, the radiation cannot penetrate the cloaking shell (from outside to inside, and viceversa). However, it was recently shown by Chen et al. that electromagnetic fields may actually penetrate the cloaked region, provided that this region contains double-negative transformation media which, via proper…
It was proposed that perfect invisibility cloaks can be constructed for hiding objects from electromagnetic illumination (Pendry et al., Science 312, p. 1780). The cylindrical cloaks experimentally demonstrated (Schurig et al., Science 314, p. 997) and proposed (Cai et al., Nat. Photon. 1, p. 224) have however simplified material parameters in order to facilitate easier realization as well as to avoid infinities in optical constants. Here we show that the cylindrical cloaks with simplified material parameters inherently allow the zeroth-order cylindrical wave to pass through the cloak as if th…
The suggestive idea of "cloaking" an electromagnetic sensor, i.e., strongly reducing its visibility (scattering) while maintaining its field-sensing (absorption) capabilities, has recently been proposed in the literature, based on scattering-cancellation, Fano-resonance, or transformation-optics approaches. In this paper, we explore an alternative, transformation-optics-based route, which relies on the recently-introduced concept of "anti-cloaking." More specifically, our proposed approach relies on a suitable tailoring of the competing cloaking and anti-cloaking mechanisms, interacting in a t…
Electromagnetic wave behaviour in an anisotropic medium with a two dimensional arbitrary geometry is studied. The aim is to trace the path of a ray in such a complex medium for the purpose of achieving cloaking (invisibility). A coordinate transformation is carried out for the formulation of an annular region at the centre of the structure whose topology is a scaled geometry of outer boundary of the structure.
In this paper we study point transformed electromagnetic invisibility cloaks in transformation media that are obtained by transformation from general anisotropic media. We assume that there are several cloaks located in different points in space. Our results apply in particular to the first order invisibility cloaks introduced by Pendry et al. and to the high order invisibility cloaks introduced by Hendi et al. and by Cai et al.. We identify the appropriate {\it cloaking boundary conditions} that the solutions of Maxwell equations have to satisfy at the outside, $\partial K_+$, and at the insi…
Invisibility cloak is drawing much attention due to its special camouflage when exposed to physical field varing from wave (electromagnetic field, acoustic field, elastic wave, etc.) to scalar field (thermal field, static magnetic field, dc electric field and mass diffusion). Here, an electrostatic field invisibility cloak has been theoretically investigated, and experimentally demonstrated for the first time to perfectly hide a certain region from sight without disturbing the external electrostatic field. The desired cloaking effect has been achieved via both scattering cancelling technology …
Electromagnetic cloaking refers to the ability to prevent an object from scattering an incident electromagnetic field. This has been accomplished in recent works by routing the incident field around the object or by changing the scattering properties of the object itself through specially designed materials, surfaces or guiding structures. In this letter, we introduce a new way of cancelling the electromagnetic scattering of an object by using an array of sources. We show that by superimposing magnetic and electric surface current densities at the boundary of an object, the scattered fields fr…
We present measurements of a transmission-line network, designed for cloaking applications in the microwave region. The network is used for channelling microwave energy through an electrically dense array of metal objects, which is basically impenetrable to the impinging electromagnetic radiation. With the designed transmission-line network the waves emitted by a source placed in an air-filled waveguide, are coupled into the network and guided through the array of metallic objects. Our goal is to illustrate the simple manufacturing, assembly, and the general feasibility of these types of cloak…
A kind of transformation media, which we shall call the "anti-cloak", is proposed to partially defeat the cloaking effect of the invisibility cloak. An object with an outer shell of "anti-cloak" is visible to the outside if it is coated with the invisible cloak. Fourier-Bessel analysis confirms this finding by showing that external electromagnetic wave can penetrate into the interior of the invisibility cloak with the help of the anti-cloak.
Spacetime or `event' cloaking was recently introduced as a concept, and the theoretical design for such a cloak was presented for illumination by electromagnetic waves [McCall, Favaro, Kinsler, Boardman 2011]. Here we describe how event cloaks can be designed for simple wave systems, using either an approximate `speed cloak' method, or an exact full-wave one. Further, we discuss in detail many of the implications of spacetime transformation devices, covering their (usually) directional nature, spacetime distortions (as opposed to cloaks), and how leaky cloaks manifest themselves. We also addre…
We present the design, fabrication and performance test of a quasi three-dimensional carpet cloak made of normal dielectric in the microwave regime. Taking advantage of a simple linear coordinate transformation we design a carpet cloak with homogeneous anisotropic medium and then practically realize the device with multilayer of alternating normal dielectric slabs based on the effective medium theory. As a proof-of-concept example, we fabricate the carpet cloak with multilayer of FR4 dielectric slabs with air spacing. The performance of the fabricated design is verified through full-wave numer…
We investigate a general class of electromagnetic devices created with any continuous transformation functions by rigorously calculating the analytical expressions of the electromagnetic field in the whole space. Some interesting phenomena associated with these transformation devices, including the invisibility cloaks, concentrators, and field rotators, are discussed. By carefully choosing the transformation function, we can realize cloaks which are insensitive to perturbations at both the inner and outer boundaries. Furthermore, we find that when the coating layer of the concentrator is reali…
The straightforward method of transformation optics implies that one starts from the coordinate transformation, determines the Jacobian matrix, the fields and material parameters of the cloak. However, the coordinate transformation appears as an optional function: it is not necessary to know it. We offer the solution of some sort of the inverse problem: starting from the fields in the invisibility cloak we directly derive the permittivity and permeability tensors of the cloaking shell. The approach can be useful for finding material parameters for the specified electromagnetic fields in the cl…
In this contribution, we present the design of cylindrical electromagnetic cloaks working at optical frequencies, making use of layered structures of plasmonic and non-plasmonic materials. The simulated results confirm the validity of the proposed approach and show a rather broad-band behavior of the cloaking device.
Invisibility cloak capable of hiding an object can be achieved by properly manipulating electromagnetic field. Such a remarkable ability has been shown in transformation and ray optics. Alternatively, it may be realistic to create a spatial cloak by means of confining electromagnetic field in three-dimensional arrayed waveguides and introducing appropriate collective curvature surrounding an object. We realize the artificial structure in borosilicate by femtosecond laser direct writing, where we prototype up to 5000 waveguides to conceal millimeter-scale volume. We characterize the performance…
In this paper, we review the methodology of transformation optics, which can construct invisibility cloak through the transformation of coordinates based on the form invariance of Maxwell's equations. Three different ways to define the components of electromagnetic fields are compared for removing some ambiguities. The analytical expressions of light-ray and wave-normal ray are derived in spherical and cylindrical ideal invisibility cloaks created with any continuous radial transformation functions, and their physical interpretation is also given. Using the duality principle in anisotropic med…
Recent theoretical advances applied to metamaterials have opened new avenues to design a coating that hides objects from electromagnetic radiation and even the sight. Here, we propose a new design of cloaking devices that creates perfect invisibility in isotropic media. A combination of positive and negative refractive indices, called plus-minus construction, is essential to achieve perfect invisibility (i.e., no time delay and total absence of reflection). Contrary to the common understanding that between two isotropic materials having different refractive indices the electromagnetic reflecti…
We introduce the idea of discontinuous electric and magnetic fields at a boundary to design and shape wavefronts in an arbitrary manner. To create this discontinuity in the field we use electric and magnetic currents which act like a Huygens source to radiate the desired wavefront. These currents can be synthesized either by an array of electric and magnetic dipoles or by a combined impedance and admittance surface. A dipole array is an active implementation to impose discontinuous fields while the impedance/admittance surface acts as a passive one. We then expand on our previous work showing …
We analyze, both analytically and numerically, the effectiveness of cloaking an infinite cylinder from observations by electromagnetic waves in three dimensions. We show that, as truncated approximations of the ideal permittivity and permeability tensors tend towards the singular ideal cloaking fields, so that the anisotropy ratio tends to infinity, the $D$ and $B$ fields blow up near the cloaking surface. We also consider cloaking with and without the SHS (soft-and-hard surface) lining. We demonstrate numerically that cloaking is significantly improved by the SHS lining, with both the far fie…
The electromagnetic implementation of cloaking, the hiding of objects from sight by diverting and reassembling illuminating electromagnetic fields has now been with us ten years, while the notion of hiding events is now five. Both schemes as initially presented neglected the inevitable dispersion that arises when a designed medium replaces vacuum under transformation. Here we define a transformation design protocol that incorporates both spacetime transformations and dispersive material responses in a natural and rigorous way. We show how this methodology is applied to an event cloak designed …
An invisibility cloak that can hide an arbitrary object external to the cloak itself has not been devised before. In this Letter, we introduce a novel way to design a remote cloaking device that makes any object located at a certain distance invisible. This is accomplished using multi-folded transformation optics to remotely generate a hidden region around the object that no field can penetrate and that does not disturb the far-field scattering electromagnetic field. As a result, any object in the hidden region can stay in position or move freely within that region and remain invisible. Our id…
The advent of transformation optics and metamaterials has made possible devices producing extreme effects on wave propagation. Here we give theoretical designs for devices, Schrödinger hats, acting as invisible concentrators of waves. These exist for any wave phenomenon modeled by either the Helmholtz or Schrödinger equations, e.g., polarized waves in EM, pressure waves in acoustics and matter waves in QM, and occupy one part of a parameter space continuum of wave-manipulating structures which also contains standard transformation optics based cloaks, resonant cloaks and cloaked sensors. For E…
We show that the optical properties of an oblique layered system with two kinds of isotropic materials can be described using the concept of transformation media as long as the thickness of the layers is much smaller than the wavelength. Once the connection with transformation media is established, we then show that oblique layered system can serve as a universal element to build a variety of interesting functional optical components such as wave splitters, wave combiners, one-dimensional cloaking devices and reflectionless field rotators.
Using GL no scattering full wave modeling and inversion, we create a GLHUA pre cloak electromagnetic (EM) material in the virtual sphere that makes the sphere is invisible. The invisible sphere is called GLHUA sphere. In GLHUA sphere, the Pre cloak relative parameter is not less than 1; the parameters and their derivative are continuous across the boundary r=R2 and the parameters are going to infinity at origin r=0. The phase velocity of EM wave in the sphere is less than light speed and going to zero at origin. The EM wave field excited in the outside of the sphere can not be disturbed by GLH…
We propose a mechanism to actively tune the operation of plasmonic cloaks with an external magnetic field by investigating electromagnetic scattering by a dielectric cylinder coated with a magneto-optical shell. In the long wavelength limit we show that the presence of an external magnetic field may drastically reduce the scattering cross-section at all observation angles. We demonstrate that the application of external magnetic fields can modify the operation wavelength without the need of changing material and/or geometrical parameters. We also show that applied magnetic fields can reversibl…
As a probe to explore the ability of invisibility cloaks to conceal objects in the quantum mechanics domain, we study the spontaneous emission rate of an excited two-level atom in the vicinity of an ideal invisibility cloaking. On this base, first, a canonical quantization scheme is presented for the electromagnetic field interacting with atomic systems in an anisotropic, inhomogeneous and absorbing magnetodielectric medium which can suitably be used for studying the influence of arbitrary invisibility cloak on the atomic radiative properties. The time dependence of the atomic subsystem is obt…
