We study thermal broadening of the hole spectral function of the two-dimensional t-J model (and its extensions) within the non-crossing approximation with and without the contribution of optical phonons. We find that phonons at finite temperature broaden the lowest energy quasiparticle peak, however, the string excitations survive even for relatively strong electron-phonon coupling. Experimental angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy(ARPES) results compare well with our calculations at finite temperature when we use strong electron-phonon coupling without any adhoc broadening. In addition, we have studied the role of vertex corrections and we find that their contribution allows us achieve the same overall agreement with the ARPES experimental results but using smaller values for the electron-phonon coupling.
An electron-phonon interaction arising from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons is studied within the theoretical framework of Kondo lattices. It is relevant in strongly correlated electron liquids in cuprate oxide superconductors, which lie in the vicinity of the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition. It is enhanced by antiferromagnetic and superconducting fluctuations, which are developed mainly because of the superexchange interaction. When the enhancement of the electron-phonon interaction is large enough, it can explain the softening of phonons and kinks in the qu…
The thermal conductivity of the antiferromagnet Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ was measured down to 50 mK. Using the spin-flop transition to switch on and off the acoustic Nd magnons, we can reliably separate the magnon and phonon contributions to heat transport. We find that magnons travel ballistically below 0.5 K, with a thermal conductivity growing as $T^3$, from which we extract their velocity. We show that the rate of scattering of acoustic magnons by phonons grows as $T^3$, and the scattering of phonons by magnons peaks at twice the average Nd magnon frequency.
It is shown that a generic form of an antiferromagnetic wave function opens strong electron-phonon coupling channels in the iron-based superconductors. In the nonmagnetic state these channels exist locally on a single iron atom, but are canceled out between the two iron atoms in the primitive unit cell. Our findings are based on symmetry and the presence of an xz/yz Fermi surface near the M point and thus should be relevant for the known iron-based pnictide or chalcogenide superconductors.
Antiferromagnetism (AF) such as Neel ordering is often closely related to Coulomb interactions such as Hubbard repulsion in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Whether Neel AF ordering in 2D can be dominantly induced by electron-phonon couplings (EPC) has not been completely understood. Here, by employing numerically-exact sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we show that optical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) phonons with frequency $ω$ and EPC constant $λ$ can induce AF ordering for a wide range of phonon frequency $ω>ω_c$. For $ω<ω_c$, a valence-bond-solid (VBS) order appears and t…
We report a linear dependence of the phonon splitting Δωon the non-dominant exchange coupling constant J_{nd} in the antiferromagnetic transition-metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, NiO, and in the frustrated antiferromagnetic oxide spinels CdCr2O4, MgCr2O4, and ZnCr2O4. It directly confirms the theoretical prediction of an exchange induced splitting of the zone-centre optical phonon for the monoxides and explains the magnitude and the change of sign of the phonon splitting on changing the sign of the non-dominant exchange also in the frustrated oxide spinels. The experimentally found linear relati…
Systems with strong electron-phonon couplings typically exhibit various forms of charge order, while strong electron-electron interactions lead to magnetism. We use determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) calculations to solve a model on a square lattice with a caricature of these interactions. In the limit where electron-electron interactions dominate it has antiferromagnetic (AF) order, while where electron-phonon coupling dominates there is columnar valence-bond solid (VBS) order. We find a novel intervening phase that hosts coexisting nematic and antiferromagnetic orders. We have also found…
We investigate the influence of the spin-phonon coupling in the triangular antiferromagnet where the coupling is of the exchange-striction type. The magnon dispersion is shown to be modified significantly at wave vector (2pi,0) and its symmetry-related points, exhibiting a roton-like minimum and an eventual instability in the dispersion. Various correlation functions such as equal-time phonon correlation, spin-spin correlation, and local magnetization are calculated in the presence of the coupling.
We develop an analytical approach based on a unitary transformation to investigate S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains coupled to phonons, and find a new quantum phase transition at zero temperature. Although the usual phase transition occurs depending on the strengths of the spin-spin and spin-phonon interactions, the phase transition in the present work is induced by a change in the geometrical structure of the spin-phonon interaction. The magnetic properties of the phase transition can be understood in relation to a phase transition that has already been found in the frustrated J1-J2 …
We compute the effects of magnon-phonon coupling on the indirect K-edge bimagnon resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) intensity spectrum of a square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We analyze the effects of competing nearest and next--nearest magnetic and magnon-phonon coupling interaction in the RIXS spectrum, for both the antiferromagnetic (AF) and the collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF) phases of the model. Utilizing the Dyson-Maleev representation of spin operators, the Bethe-Salpeter ladder approximation scheme for the bimagnon interacting channel, and considering the lowest order…
By applying a quantum Monte Carlo procedure based on the loop algorithm we investigate thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg model coupled to Einstein phonons on the bonds. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, mean phonon occupation numbers and the specific heat are discussed in detail. We study the spin correlation function both in the regime of weak and strong spin phonon coupling (coupling constants g=0.1, w=8J and g=2, w=2J, respectively). A finite size scaling analysis of the correlation length indicates that in both cases…
A spin and phonon excitations spectrum are studied using quantum Monte Carlo method in antiferromagnetic chain with spins $S=1/2$ coupled nonadiabaticity with acoustic phonons . It is found the critical coupling exists to open gap in the triplet excitation spectrum for any phonon velocity. The phase boundaries of delocalized phonons and propagated the bound states of magnon and a phonon are calculated. It is shown that the spherical symmetry of the spin-spin correlation functions is broken . The magnetic and optical properties $CuGeO_3$ are explained without using spin-Peierls transition.
We study effects of the Coulomb repulsion on the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in a model of cuprates at zero and finite doping. We find that antiferromagnetic correlations strongly enhance EPI effects on the electron Green's function with respect to the paramagnetic correlated system, but the net effect of the Coulomb interaction is a moderate suppression of the EPI. Doping leads to additional suppression, due to reduced antiferromagnetic correlations. In contrast, the Coulomb interaction strongly suppresses EPI effects on phonons, but the suppression weakens with doping.
We use exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate that the Néel ground state of an antiferromagnetic SU(2) spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice can be destroyed by a coupling to quantum phonons. We find a clear first-order transition to a valence-bond-solid state with Kekulé order instead of a deconfined quantum critical point. However, quantum lattice fluctuations can drive the transition towards weakly first-order, revealing a tunability of the transition by the retardation of the interaction. In contrast to the one-dimensional case, our phase diagram in the…
The application of weak electric fields (<~ 100 V/cm) is found to dramatically enhance the lattice thermal conductivity of the antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator CaMnO(3) over a broad range of temperature about the Neel ordering point (125 K). The effect is coincident with field-induced de-trapping of bound electrons, suggesting that phonon scattering associated with short- and long-ranged AF order is suppressed in the presence of the mobilized charge. This interplay between bound charge and spin-phonon coupling might allow for the reversible control of spin fluctuations using weak external fiel…
The temperature dependence of eigenfrequencies and intensities of the IR active modes has been investigated for the antiferromagnetic chromium spinel compounds CdCr2O4, ZnCr2O4, ZnCr2S4, ZnCr2Se4, and HgCr2S4 by IR spectroscopy for temperatures from 5 K to 300 K. At the transition into the magnetically ordered phases, and driven by spin-phonon coupling, most compounds reveal significant splittings of the phonon modes. This is true for geometrically frustrated CdCr2O4, and ZnCr2O4, for bond frustrated ZnCr2S4 and for ZnCr2Se4, which also is bond frustrated, but dominated by ferromagnetic exchan…
By using variational wave functions and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the interplay between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in the two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model. Here, the ground-state phase diagram is triggered by several energy scales, i.e., the electron hopping $t$, the on-site electron-electron interaction $U$, the phonon energy $ω_0$, and the electron-phonon coupling $g$. At half filling, the ground state is an antiferromagnetic insulator for $U \gtrsim 2g^2/ω_0$, while it is a charge-density-wave (or bi-polaronic) insulator for $U \lesssim 2g^…
CuCrO2 is a manifestation of a two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet which exhibits an incommensurate noncollinear magnetic structure similar to a classical 120 degree ordering. Using the inelastic neutron scattering technique, direct evidence of a magnon-phonon coupling in CuCrO2 is revealed via the mixed magnon-phonon character of the excitation mode at 12.5 meV as well as a minimum at the zone boundary. A simple model Hamiltonian that incorporates an exchange striction type magnon-phonon coupling reproduces the observed features accurately. Also, continuum excitations originating from …
Magnon-phonon hybrid excitations are studied theoretically in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet with an easy axis normal to the plane. We show that two magnon bands and one phonon band are intertwined by the magnetoelastic coupling through a nontrivial SU(3) topology, which can be intuitively perceived by identifying a skyrmion structure in the momentum space. We develop a continuum theory as the long-wavelength approximation to the tight-binding model, showing our results are insensitive to lattice details and generally applicable to two-dimensional antiferromagnets. The theoretical results c…
The electronic structures, lattice dynamics, and magnetic properties of crystal β-FeSe under hydrostatic pressure have been studied by using the first-principles electronic structure calculations with van der Waals (vdW) corrections. With applied pressures, the energy bands around the Fermi energy level consisting mainly of Fe-3d orbitals show obvious energy shifts and occupation variations, and meanwhile the frequencies of all optical phonon modes increase. Among these phonon modes, the A1g mode, which relates to the Se height from the Fe-Fe plane, shows a clear frequency jump in the range be…
The magnetic response of antiferromagnetic CsO2, coming from the p-orbital S=1/2 spins of anionic O2- molecules, is followed by 133Cs nuclear magnetic resonance across the structural phase transition occuring at Ts1=61 K on cooling. Above Ts1, where spins form a square magnetic lattice, we observe a huge, nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the exchange coupling originating from thermal librations of O2- molecules. Below Ts1, where antiferromagnetic spin chains are formed as a result of p-orbital ordering, we observe a spin Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behavior of spin dynamics. These two inte…
We present a systematic study of the interplay between lattice parameters and the energy of the optical phonons as well as the antiferromagnetic coupling strength, $J$, in the high-$T_{\text{c}}$ superconducting cuprate $R$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ (\mbox{R-123}, $R =$ Y, Dy, Gd, Sm, Nd) with hole-doping $p$ ($0.00<p \lesssim 0.04$). The energy of the $B_{1g}$-mode at $ν_{B1g}\approx~335$ cm$^{-1}$ has been found to relate systematically to the inverse of the lattice parameter $a$. Our results confirm the temperature dependent phonon splitting for Nd-123 at low doping, which has been reported for …
Motivated by the recent heat transport experiments in 2D antiferromagnets, such as La$_2$CuO$_4$, where the exchange coupling $J$ is larger than the Debye energy $Θ_{\rm D}$, we discuss different types of relaxation processes for magnon heat current with a particular focus on coupling to 3D phonons. We study thermal conductivity by these in-plane magnetic excitations using two distinct techniques, Boltzmann formalism within the relaxation-time approximation and memory-function approach. Within these approaches, a close consideration is given to the scattering of magnons by both acoustic and op…
Interplay between antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation and electron-phonon coupling and the origin of the peak-dip-hump structure in the anti-nodal spectrum of high-$T_{c}$ cuprate superconductors

Coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom are important in geometrically frustrated magnets where they can lead to degeneracy lifting and novel orders. We show that moderate spin-lattice couplings in triangular and Kagome antiferromagnets can induce complex colinear magnetic orders. When classical Heisenberg spins on the triangular lattice are coupled to Einstein phonons, a rich variety of phases emerge, including the experimentally observed four sublattice state and the five sublattice 1/5th plateau state seen in the magneto-electric material CuFeO$_2$. In addition we predict magne…
We recently unveiled that antiferromagnetism (AFM) order can be dominantly induced by the bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) electron-phonon coupling (EPC), which is beyond the conventional wisdom that AFM order is usually driven by strong Coulomb interactions. Nevertheless, many aspects of the interplay between EPC and strong electronic interactions on AFM ordering remains unexplored. Here, we investigate the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard (SSHH) model with bond SSH phonons and onsite Hubbard interactions by large-scale quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations and obtain its ground-state phase diagra…
Antiferromagnetic antiperovskites, of the form Mn$_3B$N ($B$ = Ni, Cu, Zn, Sn, Ir, and Pt), have shown an outstanding behavior in which, giant negative thermal expansion and chiral magnetic structures are intertwined. As such, aiming to shed light on the magnetostructural behavior, related to the magnetic ordering and structure of this type of materials, we studied by theoretical first-principles calculations the spin-phonon coupling in the Manganese-based antiperovskite Mn$_3$NiN, as a prototype in the Mn$_3B$N family. We found a strong spin-lattice coupling by means of the understanding of t…
Spin-phonon coupling and magnetodielectric effects of ZnCr2Se4 were investigated by means of infrared (IR) spectroscopy as a function of temperature and magnetic field. ZnCr2Se4 is dominated by ferromagnetic exchange but undergoes antiferromagnetic order at T = 21 K. In the magnetically ordered phase the low-frequency IR active phonon splits, indicating strong dynamic anisotropy via magnetic exchange interactions. Antiferromagnetic order and concomitantly the phonon splitting is wiped out by external magnetic fields. Hence, ZnCr2Se4 is a prominent example of a spin-driven Jahn-Teller effect wh…
We have investigated the thermal conductivity κ_mag of high-purity single crystals of the spin chain compound Sr2CuO3 which is considered an excellent realization of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. We find that the spinon heat conductivity κ_mag is strongly enhanced as compared to previous results obtained on samples with lower chemical purity. The analysis of κ_mag allows to compute the spinon mean free path l_mag as a function of temperature. At low-temperature we find l_mag\sim0.5\mum, corresponding to more than 1200 chain unit cells. Upon increasing the tem…
We have investigated the thermal-transport properties of the kagome antiferromagnet Cd-kapellasite (Cd-K). We find that a field suppression effect on the longitudinal thermal conductivity k_xx sets in below ~25 K, suggesting a large spin contribution k_xx^sp in k_xx. We also find clear thermal Hall signals in the spin liquid phase in all Cd-K samples. The magnitude of the thermal Hall conductivity k_xy shows a significant dependence on the sample's scattering time. On the other hand, the temperature dependence of k_xy is similar in all Cd-K samples; k_xy shows a peak at almost the same tempera…
In this article in the framework of generalized Frolich model we consider electron-spin-phonon system. A parameter of electron-spin-phonon interaction is found. It is shown its interrelation with experiments on isotope-effect on high temperature superconductors and asymptotic transformation to BCS theory.
We report on a novel spin-charge fluctuation in the all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$, where the spin fluctuation is driven by the conduction of thermally excited electrons/holes and associated fluctuation of Os valence. The fluctuation exhibits an activation energy significantly greater than the spin-charge excitation gap and a peculiar frequency range of $10^{6}$--$10^{10}$ s$^{-1}$. These features are attributed to the hopping motion of carriers as small polarons in the insulating phase, where the polaron state is presumably induced by the magnetoelastic coupling via the st…

We explore the quantum phase transitions between two ordered states in the infinite dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at half filling. Our study is based on the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) combined with the numerical renormalization group (NRG), which allows us to handle both strong electron-electron and strong electron-phonon interactions. The transition line is characterized by an effective electron-electron interaction. Depending on this effective interaction and the phonon frequency $ω_0$ one finds either a continuous transition or discontinuous transition. Here, the analysis focus…
The ground state of the one-dimensional t-J model coupled with phonons in the adiabatic limit is numerically investigated by use of the Lanczos technique at quarter filling. Due to the interplay between the electron-electron Coulomb repulsion and electron-phonon interaction, this model shows a sequence of lattice distortions leading to the formation of charge-density-waves and bond-order-waves. Moderate electron-electron and electron-lattice coupling may lead to coexistence of dimerization and tetramerization in the distortion pattern. Dimerization leads to the formation of an "antiferromagnet…
We theoretically investigate spin-lattice coupling (SLC) effects on the in-field ordering properties of classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing pyrochlore lattice. Here, we use the two possible simplified models describing the effect of local lattice distortions on the spin ordering via the SLC, the bond-phonon and site-phonon models. It is found by means of Monte Carlo simulations that in both models, the $\frac{1}{2}$ plateau shows up in the magnetization curve being relatively robust against the breathing bond-alternation, although magnetic long-range orders (LRO's) are reali…
Polar phonons of HgCr2S4 and CdCr2S4 are studied by far-infrared spectroscopy as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. Eigenfrequencies, damping constants, effective plasma frequencies and Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relations, and effective charges are determined. Ferromagnetic CdCr2S4 and antiferromagnetic HgCr2S4 behave rather similar. Both compounds are dominated by ferromagnetic exchange and although HgCr2S4 is an antiferromagnet, no phonon splitting can be observed at the magnetic phase transition. Temperature and magnetic field dependence of the eigenfrequencies show no anomal…
The infrared and Terahertz properties of GdMnO_3 have been investigated as function of temperature and magnetic field, with special emphasis on the phase boundary between the incommensurate and the canted antiferromagnetic structures. The heterogeneous incommensurate phase reveals strong magnetodielectric effects, characterized by significant magnetoelectric contributions to the static dielectric permittivity and by the existence of electrically excited magnons (electromagnons). In the commensurate canted antiferromagnetic phase the magnetoelectric contributions to the dielectric constant and …
I generalize the theory of phonon topological band structures of isostatic lattices to frustrated antiferromagnets. I achieve this with a discovery of a many-body supersymmetry (SUSY) in the phonon problem of balls and springs and its connection to local constraints satisfied by ground states. The Witten index of the SUSY model demands the Maxwell-Calladine index of mechanical structures. "Spontaneous supersymmetry breaking" is identified as the need to gap all modes in the bulk to create the topological isostatic lattice state. Since ground states of magnetic systems also satisfy local constr…
We study the effect of dynamical Holstein phonons on the physics of the Hubbard model at small doping using the dynamical cluster approximation on a $2\times2$ cluster. Non-local antiferromagnetic correlations are found to significantly enhance the electron-phonon coupling, resulting in polaron formation for moderate coupling strengths. At finite doping, the electron-phonon coupling is found to strongly enhance the non-local spin correlations, indicating a synergistic interplay between the electron-phonon coupling and antiferromagnetic correlations. Although it enhances the pairing interaction…

We consider the two-chain Heisenberg ladder with antiferromagnetic interactions. Our approach is based on the description of spin excitations as triplets above a strong-coupling singlet ground state. It is shown that interaction with dynamic phonons drastically changes the dispersion of the elementary triplet excitation (magnon) and the spin structure factor. It is also shown that a new triplet excitation appears in the spectrum: the bound state of a magnon and a phonon.
Temperature and magnetic field studies of the elastic constants of the chromium spinel CdCr_2O_4 show pronounced anomalies related to strong spin-phonon coupling in this frustrated antiferromagnet. A detailed comparison of the longitudinal acoustic mode propagating along the [111] direction with theory based on an exchange-striction mechanism leads to an estimate of the strength of the magneto-elastic interaction. The derived spin-phonon coupling constant is in good agreement with previous determinations based on infrared absorption. Further insight is gained from intermediate and high magneti…
We have measured the thermal conductivity in the ab-plane, $κ$ab, and along the c-axis, $κ$c, of single crystals of the S = 1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba3CoSb2O9 in zero field and magnetic fields. In zero field, it has been found that both $κ$ab and $κ$c show a similar broad peak around 40 K, suggesting that the thermal conductivity due to phonons is dominant in this compound and that the mean free path of phonons is suppressed so much by strong magnetic-fluctuations due to the magnetic frustration. It has also been found that both $κ$ab and $κ$c show a kink at the antiferromagneti…
We study the problem of heat transport in one-dimensional (1D) spin-chain systems weakly coupled to three-dimensional phonons and impurities. We consider the limit of fast spin excitations and slow phonons, applicable to a number of compounds of the cuprates family, such as Sr2CuO3, where the superexchange J is much larger than the Debye energy. In this case the Umklapp scattering among the spin excitations is strongly suppressed for all relevant temperatures. We argue that the leading scattering mechanism for the spin excitations at not too low temperatures is the "normal" (as opposed to the …
The infrared phonon spectrum of the spinel CdCr2O4 is measured as a function temperature from 6 K to 300K. The triply degenerate Cr phonons soften in the paramagnetic phase as temperature is lowered below 100 K and then split into a singlet and doublet in the low T antiferromagnetic phase which is tetragonally distorted to relieve the geometric frustration in the pyrochlore lattice of Cr$^{3+}$ ions. The phonon splitting is inconsistent with the simple increase (decrease) in the force constants due to deceasing (increasing) bond lengths in the tetragonal phase. Rather they correspond to change…
We studied the optical properties of antiferromagnetic ZnCr2Se4 by infrared spectroscopy up to 28,000 cm-1 and for temperatures from 5 to 295 K. At the magnetic phase transition at 21 K, one of the four phonon modes reveals a clear splitting of 3 cm-1 as a result of spin-phonon coupling, the other three optical eigenmodes only show shifts of the eigenfrequencies. The antiferromagnetic ordering and the concomitant splitting of the phonon mode can be suppressed in a magnetic field of 7 T. At higher energies we observed a broad excitation band which is dominated by a two-peak-structure at about 1…
We present the detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge. Time-of-flight and triple-axis spectroscopy experiments were conducted at the temperature of 6~K, well below the high magnetic ordering temperature of 370~K. The magnetic excitations have a 5-meV gap and display an anisotropic dispersive mode reaching $\simeq 90$~meV at the boundaries of the magnetic Brillouin zone. The spectrum at the zone center shows two additional excitations that demonstrate characteristics of both magnons and phonons. The \textit{ab initio} lattice-dynamics cal…

We present a comprehensive investigation of lattice dynamics in the double-helix antiferromagnet FeP by means of high-resolution time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations. Phonons can hybridize with the magnetic excitations in noncollinear magnets to significantly influence their properties. We observed a rich spectrum of phonon excitations, which extends up to $\sim$50 meV. We performed detailed analysis of the observed and calculated spectra for all high-symmetry points and high-symmetry directions of the Brillouin zone. We show that the DFT calculations quantitatively c…

The two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of electrons coupled to quantum phonons is investigated using Langevin dynamics within the framework of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo. Based on an explicit determination of the density of zeros of the fermion determinant, it is argued that the method is efficient in the challenging adiabatic limit. Large-scale simulations at the O(4)-symmetric point establish that the ground state of the 2D SSH model undergoes a transition from a $(π,π)$ valence bond solid to an antiferromagnet with increasing phonon frequency, yet still in the adiabatic reg…
We report on Raman scattering measurements of the A-site ordered YBaMn2O6 in the wide temperature range of 10-650K. Upon cooling almost all phonon modes show pronounced temperature dependencies of frequency, linewidth, and scattering intensity. This suggests that the octahedra tilting, Mn-O bond angles and lengths vary with temperature in a concerted way. The remarkable feature is that the high-temperature metallic and the charge and orbital ordered (CO-OO) states coexist down to T_N=195K. In the antiferromagnetic state zone-folded modes are induced by the CO-OO superstructure and the phonon m…
