The two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of electrons coupled to quantum phonons is investigated using Langevin dynamics within the framework of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo. Based on an explicit determination of the density of zeros of the fermion determinant, it is argued that the method is efficient in the challenging adiabatic limit. Large-scale simulations at the O(4)-symmetric point establish that the ground state of the 2D SSH model undergoes a transition from a $(π,π)$ valence bond solid to an antiferromagnet with increasing phonon frequency, yet still in the adiabatic regime. The single-particle spectrum illustrates the renormalization of the electronic band and suggests the existence of a gapped polaronic band, whereas the particle-hole channels show gapless modes associated with long-range bond and magnetic order, respectively. The simulations are supplemented with a mean-field analysis and a self-consistent Born proximation.
The phase diagram of the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of spinless fermions coupled to quantum phonons is determined by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. It differs significantly from previous work. In addition to Luttinger liquid and bond-order-wave (BOW) phases, we find an extended charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. Because of different broken symmetries, BOW and CDW phases are connected by a retardation-driven phase transition. Our results are consistent with the theory of the frustrated $XXZ$ chain, including unconventional power-law exponents at criticality, and an interpretatio…
Transport properties, spectral function and optical conductivity of the adiabatic one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model are studied with particular emphasis on the model parameters suitable for Rubrene single crystals based field effect transistors. We show that the mobility, calculated by using the Kubo formula for conductivity, vanishes unless we introduce an "ad hoc" broadening of the system energy levels. Furthermore, the apparent contradiction between angle resolved photoemission data and transport properties is clarified by studying the behavior of the spectral function. Final…
The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger(SSH) model has been widely used to study the topological property of 1D systems. It is claimed that there is fractional charge at the boundary of the nontrivial phase while none at that of trivial phase. However, this conclusion is in direct contradiction to the modern theory of polarization(MTP). We solve this paradox by showing that the polarization of SSH model depends only on the distribution of the positive charges and is irrelevant to the Zak phase defined in previous works. Thus the distribution of positive charges alone determines whether the SSH chain is topol…
We introduce variational wave functions to evaluate the ground-state properties of spin-phonon coupled systems described by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Quantum spins and phonons are treated on equal footing within a Monte Carlo sampling, and different regimes are investigated. We show that the proposed variational Ansatz yields good agreement with previous density-matrix renormalization group results in one dimension and is able to accurately describe the spin-Peierls transition. This variational approach is neither constrained by the magnetoelastic-coupling strength nor by the dimensional…
An analytical nonadiabatic approach has been developed to study the dimerization gap and the optical absorption coefficient of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model where the electrons interact with dispersive quantum phonons. By investigating quantitatively the effects of quantum phonon fluctuations on the gap order and the optical responses in this system, we show that the dimerization gap is much more reduced by the quantum lattice fluctuations than the optical absorption coefficient is. The calculated optical absorption coefficient and the density of states do not have the inverse-square-root sin…
We consider a three-dimensional model of coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains. The analytically soluble model discussed here reliably reproduces the features of the band structure of crystalline polyacetylene as obtained from density-functional theory. We show that when a certain inter-chain coupling is sufficiently increased, the system develops a ring of Weyl nodes. We argue that such an increase could be achieved experimentally by intercalation or extreme pressure. With the addition of a simple intra-orbital pairing term we find that the system supports an exotic superconducting state …
The Hubbard and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonians (SSH) are iconic models for understanding the qualitative effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions respectively. In the two-dimensional square lattice Hubbard model at half filling, the on-site Coulomb repulsion, $U$, between up and down electrons induces antiferromagnetic (AF) order and a Mott insulating phase. On the other hand, for the SSH model, there is an AF phase when the electron-phonon coupling $λ$ is less than a critical value $λ_c$ and a bond order wave when $λ> λ_c$. In this work, we perform numerical studies on…
Self-consistent solutions to a generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model on a 2-dimensional square lattice are investigated. Away from half-filling, spatially inhomogeneous phases are found. Those phases may have topological structures on the flux order, large unit cell bond order, localized bipolarons, or they are simply short-range ordered and glassy. They have an universal feature of always possessing a gap at the Fermi level.
For the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model on the two-dimensional square lattice, two third nearest neighbor hoppings which preserve chiral symmetry are introduced. Like the case of one dimension, the longer-range hopping can drive topological transitions and leads to the larger topological invariant (vectored Berry phase for the two dimensional SSH model). We obtain the phase boundaries and topological phase diagrams from the winding pattern of $ρ(k_l)$ of the Bloch Hamiltonian. Effects of correlations on the extended two dimensional SSH model are also investigated. The correlation shifts the p…
Topological magnons in a one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic (FM) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with anisotropic exchange interactions are investigated. Apart from the inter-cellular isotropic Heisenberg interaction, the intercellular anisotropic exchange interactions, i.e. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and pseudo-dipolar interaction (PDI), also can induce the emergence of the non-trivial phase with two degenerate in-gap edge states separately localized at the two ends of the 1D chain, while the intracellular interactions instead unfavors the topological phase. The interplay among …
We study a single polaron in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model using four different techniques (three numerical and one analytical). Polarons show a smooth crossover from weak to strong coupling, as a function of the electron-phonon coupling strength $λ$, in all models where this coupling depends only on phonon momentum $q$. In the SSH model the coupling also depends on the electron momentum $k$; we find it has a sharp transition, at a critical coupling strength $λ_c$, between states with zero and nonzero momentum of the ground state. All other properties of the polaron are also singular at…
We investigate the entanglement spectrum of the ground state of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model. The topological phases of the model can be identified by degeneracy of the largest eigenvalues of entanglement spectrum. The study of the periodic boundary condition is enough to obtain the phase diagram of the model, without the consideration of the open boundary condition case. Physical interpretation about the bulk-edge correspondence in the entanglement spectrum is presented. The method of the entanglement spectrum can be applicable in studying other topological phases of matter.
We study the phase diagram and the total polarization distribution of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with nearest neighbor interaction in one dimension at half-filling. To obtain the ground state wave-function, we extend the Baeriswyl variational wave function to account for alternating hopping parameters. The ground state energies of the variational wave functions compare well to exact diagonalization results. For the case of uniform hopping for all bonds, where it is known that an ideal conductor to insulator transition takes place at finite interaction, we also find a transition at an inter…
We study one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) models with quantum phonons using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. Within statistical errors, we obtain identical results for the SSH model with acoustic phonons, and a related model with a coupling to an optical bond phonon mode. Based on this agreement, we first study the Peierls metal-insulator transition of the spinless SSH model, and relate it to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of a spinless Luttinger liquid. In the Peierls phase, the spectral functions reveal the single-particle and charge gap, and a central peak related…
We study the disconnected entanglement entropy, $S^D$, of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. $S^D$ is a combination of both connected and disconnected bipartite entanglement entropies that removes all area and volume law contributions, and is thus only sensitive to the non-local entanglement stored within the ground state manifold. Using analytical and numerical computations, we show that $S^D$ behaves as a topological invariant, i.e., it is quantized to either $0$ or $2 \log (2)$ in the topologically trivial and non-trivial phases, respectively. These results also hold in the presence of symmetr…
We study the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with both the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping strengths being cyclically modulated and find the family of the model system exhibiting topologically nontrivial phases, which can be characterized by a nonzero Chern number defined in a two-dimensional space spanned by the momentum and modulation parameter. It is interesting that the model has a similar phase diagram as the well-known Haldane's model. We propose to use photonic crystal systems as the idea systems to fabricate our model systems and probe their topological propertie…
We consider the effects of on-site and hopping disorder on zero modes in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. In the absence of disorder a domain wall gives rise to two chiral fractionalized bound states, one at the edge and one bound to the domain wall. On-site disorder breaks the chiral symmetry, in contrast to hopping disorder. By using the polarization we find that on-site disorder has little effect on the chiral nature of the bound states for weak to moderate disorder. We explore the behaviour of these bound states for strong disorder, contrasting on-site and hopping disorder and connect our r…
We recently unveiled that antiferromagnetism (AFM) order can be dominantly induced by the bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) electron-phonon coupling (EPC), which is beyond the conventional wisdom that AFM order is usually driven by strong Coulomb interactions. Nevertheless, many aspects of the interplay between EPC and strong electronic interactions on AFM ordering remains unexplored. Here, we investigate the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard (SSHH) model with bond SSH phonons and onsite Hubbard interactions by large-scale quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations and obtain its ground-state phase diagra…
Over the last several years, a new generation of quantum simulations has greatly expanded our understanding of charge density wave phase transitions in Hamiltonians with coupling between local phonon modes and the on-site charge density. A quite different, and interesting, case is one in which the phonons live on the bonds, and hence modulate the electron hopping. This situation, described by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian, has so far only been studied with quantum Monte Carlo in one dimension. Here we present results for the 2D SSH model, and show that a bond ordered wave (BOW) in…

We show that mutual statistics between quantum particles can be tuned to generate emergent novel few particle quantum mechanics for the boundary modes of symmetry-protected topological phases of matter. As a concrete setting, we study a system of pseudofermions, defined as quantum particles with tunable algebra, which lie on two distinct Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains. We find that as the mutual statistics of the particles are tuned -- the boundary modes present in the two chains gets non-trivially entangled showing a sudden jump in their mutual entanglement entropy. We further show that, s…
We use the Lindblad equation method to investigate the onset of a mobility edge and the topological phase transition in the disordered SSH chain connected to two external baths in the large bias limit. From the scaling properties of the nonequilibrium stationary current flowing across the system, we recover the localization/delocalization in the disordered chain. To probe the topological phase transition in the presence of disorder, we use the even-odd differential occupancy as a mean to discriminate topologically trivial from topologically nontrival phases in the out-of-equilibirum system. Ev…
A remarkable feature of the trimer Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH3) model is that it supports localized edge states. Although Zak's phase remains quantized for the case of a mirror-symmetric chain, it is known that it fails to take integer values in the absence of this symmetry and thus it cannot play the role of a well-defined bulk invariant in the general case. Attempts to establish a bulk-edge correspondence have been made via Green's functions or through extensions to a synthetic dimension. Here we propose a simple alternative for SSH3, utilizing the previously introduced sublattice Zak's phase…
