We address in a recent gauge model of unparticles the issues that are important for consistency of a gauge theory, i.e., unitarity and Ward identity of physical amplitudes. We find that non-integrable singularities arise in physical quantities like cross section and decay rate from gauge interactions of unparticles. We also show that Ward identity is violated due to the lack of a dispersion relation for charged unparticles although the Ward-Takahashi identity for general Green functions is incorporated in the model. A previous observation that the unparticle's (with scaling dimension d) contribution to the gauge boson self-energy is a factor (2-d) of the particle's has been extended to the Green function of triple gauge bosons. This (2-d) rule may be generally true for any point Green functions of gauge bosons. This implies that the model would be trivial even as one that mimics certain dynamical effects on gauge bosons in which unparticles serve as an interpolating field.
Unparticle physics from a hidden conformal sector can alter the evolution of the Standard Model (SM) gauge couplings via TeV scale threshold corrections. We discuss how this may lead to gauge coupling unification at M_{GUT}\approx 2 \times 10^{15} GeV -- 5 \times 10^{17} GeV without introducing new particles in the SM sector.
The existence of scale invariant physics would lead to new phenomena in particle physics that could be detected at the LHC. In this paper we exploit the effects of these unparticles in $WW \to WW$ scattering. From the requirement of unitarity we derive constraints on unparticle physics. We show that the existence of unparticles would lead to deviations in differential cross sections which can be measured. These deviations are sensitive on the scale dimension and on the spin characteristics of the unparticles.
Unparticles charged under a gauge group can contribute to the running of the gauge coupling. We show that a scalar unparticle of scaling dimension d contributes to the βfunction a term that is (2-d) times that from a scalar particle in the same representation. This result has important implications on asymptotic freedom. An unparticle with d>2, in contrast to its matter counterpart, can speed up the approach to asymptotic freedom for a non-Abelian gauge theory and has the tendency to make an Abelian theory also asymptotically free. For not spoiling the excellent agreement of the standard model…
A field model for a quark and an antiquark binding is described. Quarks interact via a gauge unparticle ("ungluons"). The model is formulated in terms of Lagrangian which features the source field $S(x)$ which becomes a local pseudo-Goldstone field of conformal symmetry - the pseudodilaton mode and from which the gauge non-primary unparticle field is derived by $B_μ(x) \sim\partial_μ S(x)$. Because the conformal sector is strongly coupled, the mode $S(x)$ may be one of new states accessible at high energies. We have carried out an analysis of the important quantity that enters in the "ungluon"…
We show that the requirement of gauge invariance is not enough to fix the form of interactions between unparticles and gauge fields, thus revealing a wide new class of gauged unparticle actions. Our approach also allows us to construct operators which create gauge invariant coloured unparticles. We discuss both their perturbative and non--perturbative properties.
The derivation of Feynman rules for unparticles carrying standard model quantum numbers is discussed. In particular, this note demonstrates that an application of Mandelstam's approach to constructing a gauge-invariant action reproduces for unparticles the vertices one obtains through the usual minimal coupling scheme; other non-trivial requirements are satisfied as well. This approach is compared to an alternative method 0801.0892 that has recently been constructed by A. L. Licht.
We investigate the rare radiative decays of extra gauge neutral bosons. In particular, we established the theoretical predictions for the production of unparticle in decays of $Z^{\prime}$ - bosons. The implementation of our prediction in the analysis at the LHC experiments should be straightforward and lead to more precise determination or limits of unparticle couplings and/or $Z^{\prime}$ couplings and masses.
Modern theoretical models strongly suggest that new phenomena await discovery above the energy scale of the Standard Model (SM) of particle interactions. In this paper we argue that correct description of particle physics in the TeV energy scale needs to account for degrees of freedom obeying the conformal (or scale) invariance. In this respect, the existing of Georgi's unparticles is strongly argued. We present the gauge model of scalar unparticles. The ground state of scalar unparticles in the continuum is restricted by the vacuum expectation value of the SM Higgs boson and the scale dimensi…
The dynamics of fermionic unparticles is developed from first principles. It is shown that any unparticle, whether fermionic or bosonic, can be recast in terms of a canonically quantized field, but with non-local interaction terms. We further develop a possible gauge theory for fermionic unparticles. Computing the consequent contribution of un-fermions to the $β$ function of the theory, it is shown that this can be viewed as the sum of two contributions, one fermion-like and the other scalar-like. However, if full conformal invariance is imposed, the latter vanishes identically. We discuss the…
We propose a model that introduces a supersymmetric unparticle operator in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. We analyze the lowest dimension operator involving an unparticle. This operator behaves as a Standard Model gauge singlet and it introduces a new parameter into the Higgs potential which can provide an alternative way to relax the upper limit on the lightest Higgs boson mass. This operator also introduces several unparticle interactions which can induce a neutral Higgsino to decay into a spinor unparticle. It also induces violation of scale invariance around the electroweak sca…
The possibility of the presence of unparticle has been discussed recently adding a mass like term for gauge field with the Vector Schwinger model at the classical level \cite{GEOR1}. A one loop correction due to bosonization is taken into account and investigation is carried over to study the effect of it in connection with the unparticle scenario. It has been found that mass of the gauge boson acquires a generalized expression with the bare coupling constant and the parameters involved in the masslike terms added at the classical level term as well the terms entered in the model during the on…
A conformally invariant hidden sector is considered, with a scalar operator $O$ of low dimension that couples to the electro-weak gauge bosons of the Standard Model, via terms such as $O F^{μν}F_{μν}$. By examining single photon production at LEP, we bound the strength of these interactions. We apply our results, along with those of Delgado and Strassler and of Caracciolo and Rychkov, to improve the bound on four-photon production through "unparticle self-interactions", as proposed by Feng et al. We find the maximum allowable cross-section is of order a few tens of femtobarns at the 14 TeV LHC…
We present the conformal windows of SU(N) supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric gauge theories with vector-like matter transforming according to higher irreducible representations of the gauge group. We determine the fraction of asymptotically free theories expected to develop an infrared fixed point and find that it does not depend on the specific choice of the representation. This result is exact in supersymmetric theories while it is an approximate one in the nonsupersymmetric case. The analysis allows us to size the unparticle world related to the existence of underlying gauge theories deve…
The geodetic and frame-dragging effects are the direct consequences of the spacetime curvature near Earth which can be probed from the Gravity probe B (GP-B) satellite. The satellite result matches quite well with Einstein's general relativistic result. The gyroscope of the satellite which measures the spacetime curvature near Earth contains lots of electrons and nucleons. Ultralight axions, vector gauge bosons, and unparticles can interact with these electrons and nucleons through different spin-dependent and spin-independent operators and change the drift rate of the gyroscope. Some of these…
Using the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism, we examine the effect of the space-time dimensionality on a physical observable in the unparticle scenario. We explicitly show that long-range forces between particles mediated by unparticles are still present whenever we go over into lower dimensions.
We analyze generalizations of the Schwinger model with more massless fermions and more vector fields. We focus on models with the gauge structure of ``diagonal color $SU(n)$'' but unlike previous investigators, we do not assume that all the gauge boson masses are the same. Unlike the Schwinger model, these are Banks-Zaks models with conformal sectors that survive at long distances. In addition to local operators that go to ``unparticle operators'' with non-zero anomalous dimensions at long distances, they contain local operators like the $\barψ_Lψ_R$ operator in the Schwinger model which go to…
We propose an extra-dimensional approach to the unparticle Higgs (Unhiggs). The non-local 4D Unhiggs action is derived as the boundary effective action of a local 5D theory. We review the mechanism to generate unparticle spectra in the context of warped soft-wall models. Gauge invariance can be simply implemented and unitarity of the longitudinal WW scattering amplitude is particularly transparent. Furthermore, the 5D approach uncovers a broader spectrum of phenomenological possibilities. The Unhiggs is accompanied by another continuum formed by Kaluza-Klein excitations of the Standard Model g…
Recently, conceptually new physics beyond the Standard Model has been proposed, where a hidden conformal sector provides ``unparticle'' which couples to the Standard Model sector through higher dimensional operators in low energy effective theory. Among several possibilities, we focus on operators involving unparticle, the Higgs doublet and the gauge bosons. Once the Higgs doublet develops the vacuum expectation value, the conformal symmetry is broken and as a result, the mixing between unparticle and Higgs boson emerges. We find that this mixing can cause sizable shifts for the couplings betw…
We summarize basic features associated to dynamical breaking of the electroweak symmetry. The knowledge of the phase diagram of strongly coupled theories as function of the number of colors, flavors and matter representation plays a fundamental role when trying to construct viable extensions of the standard model (SM). Therefore we will report on the status of the phase diagram for SU(N) gauge theories with fermionic matter transforming according to arbitrary representations of the underlying gauge group. We will discuss how the phase diagram can be used to construct unparticle models. We will…
We study the Bose symmetry violation through the decays of heavy vector bosons at high energies. In particular, the decay of a Z'-boson into two photons where one of the photons is the vector unparticle in the scale invariant sector is considered as a sample. We find out that the Bose symmetry might be violated in the nearly conformal sector at high energy frontier. This may be useful in phenomenological application to the CERN LHC experiments for new physics searches.
The Sommerfield model with a massive vector field coupled to a massless fermion in 1+1 dimensions is an exactly solvable analog of a Bank-Zaks model. The `physics' of the model comprises a massive boson and an unparticle sector that survives at low energy as a conformal field theory (Thirring model). I discuss the `Schwinger point' of the Sommerfield model in which the vector boson mass goes to zero. The limit is singular but gauge invariant quantities should be well-defined. I give a number of examples, both (trivially) with local operators and with nonlocal products connected by Wilson lines…

After briefly reviewing some arguments in favor of high scale and low scale supersymmetry breaking, I discuss a possible solution of the $μ$-problem of gauge mediated models.
Left-Right symmetry including supersymmetry presents an important class of gauge models which may possess natural solutions to many issues of phenomenology. Cosmology of such models indicates a phase transition accompanied by domain walls. Such walls must be unstable in order to not conflict with standard cosmology, and can further be shown to assist with open issues of cosmology such as dilution of unwanted relic densities and leptogenesis. In this paper we construct a model of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking in which parity breaking is also signalled along with supersymmetry breaking a…
We give an extensive description of the renormalisation of the Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric model in SloopS. SloopS is an automatised code for the computation of one-loop processes in the MSSM. In this paper, the first in a series, we study in detail the non gauge invariance of some definitions of tan(beta). We rely on a general non-linear gauge fixing constraint to make the gauge parameter dependence of different schemes for tan(beta) at one-loop explicit. In so doing, we update, within these general gauges, an important Ward-Slavnov-Taylor identity on the mixing between the pse…
Although gauge-boson propagators in asymptotically-free gauge theories satisfy a dispersion relation, they do not satisfy the Källen-Lehmann (KL) representation because the spectral function changes sign. We argue that this is a simple consequence of asymptotic freedom. On the basis of the QED-like Ward identities of the pinch technique (PT) we claim that the product of the coupling $g^2$ and the scalar part $\hat{d}(q^2)$ of the PT propagator, which is both gauge invariant and renormalization-group invariant, can be factored into the product of the running charge $\bar{g}^2(q^2)$ and a term $…
In this thesis we study two important phenomenological issues in the context of supersymmetric gauge theories. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) we analyze properties of the neutral Higgs boson decays into two neutralinos. In the second part of our work we study in detail the Proton decay in the Minimal Supersymmetric SU(5) Theory.
Once it is discovered, the determination of the various couplings of a new neutral gauge boson at a hadron supercollider will not be an easy task. We review several recent studies that have begun to examine this issue for both the SSC and LHC.
We discuss the aspects of the little Higgs model with the $SU(4)_L \times U(1)_X$ electroweak gauge group as an alternative solution to the naturalness and fine-tuning issues. We introduce anomaly-free fermion spectra, and present their interactions with the physical gauge bosons. We also discuss some phenomenological implications of these fermions and the extra gauge bosons based on recent experimental results.
We consider issues related to the conformal mapping between the Einstein and Jordan frames in f(R) cosmology. We consider the impact of the conformal transformation on the gauge of a perturbed system and show that unless the system is written in a restricted set of gauges the mapping could produce an inconsistent result in the target frame. Newtonian gauge lies within the restricted group but synchronous gauge does not. If this is not treated carefully it could in principle contaminate numerical calculations.
Based on an Invited Plenary Talk given at ``Workshop on Physics and Experiments with Linear $e^+e^-$ Colliders,'' Waikoloa, Hawaii, April 26--30, 1993. This paper reviews theoretical issues concerning the structure of vector bosons, with emphasis on deviations of triple-vector-boson interactions from the predictions of the Standard Model. Particular emphasis is on the role of gauge invariance in understanding the behavior of vector particles over energy scales large compared to their masses.
The conflict between the physical degrees of freedom of gauge bosons and the Lorentz group irreps naturally used to describe their couplings to matter fields are illustrated and discussed, and applied to issues of linear and angular momentum.
The issue of the Gribov copies is discussed in Euclidean N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory quantized in the Landau gauge. As a consequence of the absence of a renormalization group invariant scale, it turns out that it is not possible to attach a dynamical meaning to the Gribov parameter. This implies that, in N=4 Super Yang-Mills, there is no need for the restriction of the domain of integration in the functional integral to the Gribov region, and no non-perturbative dynamical scale is generated. This result is in agreement with the absence of a confining phase observed from the Coulomb behaviour o…
One intriguing issue in the nucleon spin decomposition problem is the existence of two types of decompositions, which are representably characterized by two different orbital angular momenta (OAMs) of quarks. The one is the manifestly gauge-invariant mechanical OAM, while the other is the so-called gauge-invariant canonical (g.i.c.) OAM, the concept of which was introduced by Chen et al. To get a deep insight into the difference of these two decompositions, it is therefore vitally important to understand the the physical meanings of the above two OAMs correctly. Also to be clarified is the imp…
The question whether the total gluon angular momentum in the nucleon can be decomposed into its spin and orbital parts without conflict with the gauge-invariance principle has been an object of long-lasting debate. Despite a remarkable progress achieved through the recent intensive researches, the following two issues still remains to be clarified more transparently. The first issue is to resolve the apparent conflict between the proposed gauge-invariant decomposition of the total gluon angular momentum and the textbook statement that the total angular momentum of the photon cannot be gauge-in…
We study the issue of gauge invariance in five-dimensional theories compactified on an orbifold $S^1/(\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}^\prime_2)$ in the presence of an external U(1) gauge field. From the four-dimensional point We study the issue of gauge invariance in five-dimensional theories compactified on an orbifold $S^1/(\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}^\prime_2)$ in the presence of an external U(1) gauge field. From the four-dimensional point of view the theory contains a tower of Kaluza-Klein Dirac fermions with chiral couplings and it looks anomalous at the quantum level. We show that this …
Recently there has been much progress in building models of gauge mediation, often with predictions different than those of minimal gauge mediation. Meade, Seiberg, and Shih have characterized the most general spectrum which can arise in gauge mediated models. We discuss some of the challenges of building models of General Gauge Mediation, especially the problem of messenger parity and issues connected with R symmetry breaking and CP violation. We build a variety of viable, weakly coupled models which exhibit some or all of the possible low energy parameters.
We discuss the issue of precision gauge unification in the MSSM. We find that a comparably light gluino, as it emerges in certain patterns of soft supersymmetry breaking, can be a key ingredient for ensuring precision gauge unification without relying on the presence of extra particles around the scale of grand unification. In particular, the so-called mirage pattern for gaugino masses can naturally lead to precision gauge unification. There is also an interesting correlation with reduced fine-tuning, due to rather light gluinos.
We revisit the gauge issue in cosmological perturbation theory, and highlight its relation to the notion of covariance in general relativity. We also discuss the similarities and differences of the covariant approach in perturbation theory to the Bardeen or metric approach in a non-technical fashion.
Owing to subtle issues concerning quantum fluctuations and gauge fixing, a formulation of a general procedure to specify the realization of non-Abelian gauge symmetry has evaded all earlier attempts. In this Letter, we discuss these subtleties and present two sets of order parameters for non-Abelian gauge theories. Such operators directly probe the manifest low energy symmetry group and are crucial for the study of the phase diagram of a non-Abelian gauge theory.
Some of the basic issues related to the regularization and anomalies in gauge theory are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the recent development in lattice gauge theory. The generalized Pauli-Villars regularization is discussed from a view point of the covariant regularization of currents, and the construction of a regularized effective action in terms of covariant currents is compared with the lattice formulation of chiral Abelian theory.
In this paper we address the issue of the non-perturbative quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the Curci-Ferrari gauge. In particular, we construct a Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action for this gauge which takes into account the presence of gauge copies as well as the dynamical formation of dimension two condensates. This action enjoys a non-perturbative BRST symmetry recently proposed in \cite{Capri:2015ixa}. Finally, we give attention to the gluon propagator in different space-time dimensions.
We address the issue why the number and the location of magnetic monopoles detected on lattice configurations are gauge dependent, in contrast with the physical expectation that monopoles have a gauge invariant status. By use of the Non-Abelian Bianchi Identities we show that monopoles are gauge invariant, but the efficiency of the technique usually adopted to detect them depends on the choice of the gauge in a well understood way. In particular we have studied a class of gauges which interpolates between the Maximal Abelian gauge, where all monopoles are observed, and the Landau gauge, where …
The quantisation of gauge invariant systems usually proceeds through some gauge fixing procedure of one type or another. Typically for most cases, such gauge fixings are plagued by Gribov ambiguities, while it is only for an admissible gauge fixing that the correct dynamical description of the system is represented, especially with regards to non perturbative phenomena. However, any gauge fixing procedure whatsoever may be avoided altogether, by using rather a recently proposed new approach based on the projection operator onto physical gauge invariant states only, which is necessarily free on…
