We present kinematic measurements of thin and thick disk components in a sample of nine edge-on galaxies. We extract stellar and ionized gas rotation curves at and above the galaxies' midplanes using the Ca II triplet absorption features and H-alpha emission lines measured with the GMOS spectrographs on Gemini North and South. For the higher mass galaxies in the sample, we fail to detect differences between the thin and thick disk kinematics. In the lower mass galaxies, there is a wide range of thick disk behavior including thick disks with substantial lag and one counter-rotating thick disk. We compare our rotation curves with expectations from thick disk formation models and conclude that the wide variety of thick disk kinematics favors a formation scenario where thick disk stars are accreted or formed during merger events as opposed to models that form thick disks through gradual thin disk heating.
We present kinematic measurements of the thick and thin disks in two edge-on galaxies. We have derived stellar rotation curves at and above the galaxies' midplanes using Ca II triplet features measured with the GMOS spectrograph on Gemini North. In one galaxy, FGC 1415, the kinematics above the plane show clear rotation that lags that of the midplane by ~20-50%, similar to the behavior seen in the Milky Way. However, the kinematics of the second galaxy, FGC 227, are quite different. The rotation above the plane is extremely slow, showing <25% of the rotation speed of the stars at the midplane.…
I discuss how the chemical abundance distributions, kinematics and age distributions of stars in the thin and thick disks of the Galaxy can be used to decipher the merger history of the Milky Way, a typical large galaxy. The observational evidence points to a rather quiescent past merging history, unusual in the context of the `consensus' cold-dark-matter cosmology favoured from observations of structure on scales larger than individual galaxies.
We try here to find new constraints on thick disk population using samples at intermediate latitude and North Galactic Pole, which include photometry and proper motions. The algorithm SEM (Stochastic-Estimation-Maximization; Celeux \& Deibolt 1986) was used to deconvolve the stellar components up to large distances above the plane, allowing to study of their statistical properties independently. The multivariate discriminant analysis (MDA) is used to qualify the thick disk using observations in multidimensional space (V,B-V,U-B, $μ_{l}$ \& $μ_{b}$).
We report a kinematic signature associated with the observed asymmetry in the distribution of thick disk/inner halo stars interior to the Solar circle described in Paper I. In that paper we found a statistically significant excess (20% to 25 %) of stars in quadrant I (l ~ 20 deg to 55 deg) both above and below the plane (b ~ +/- 25 deg to +/- 45 deg) compared to the complementary region in quadrant IV. We have measured Doppler velocities for 741 stars, selected according to the same magnitude and color criteria, in the direction of the asymmetry and in the corresponding fields in quadrant IV. …
We analyze the distribution of G and K type stars towards the Galactic poles using RAVE and ELODIE radial velocities, 2MASS photometric star counts, and UCAC2 proper motions. The combination of photometric and 3D kinematic data allows us to disentangle and describe the vertical distribution of dwarfs, sub-giants and giants and their kinematics. We identify discontinuities within the kinematics and magnitude counts that separate the thin disk, thick disk and a hotter component. The respective scale heights of the thin disk and thick disk are 225$\pm$10 pc and 1048$\pm$36 pc. We also constrain t…
We present the kinematics of a sample of 398 DA white dwarfs from the SPY project (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY) and discuss kinematic criteria for distinguishing thin-disk, thick-disk, and halo populations. This is the largest homogeneous sample of white dwarfs for which 3D space motions have been determined. Since the percentage of old stars among white dwarfs is higher than among main-sequence stars, they are presumably valuable tools in studies of old populations, such as the halo and the thick disk. Radial velocities and spectroscopic distances were combined with our measurements of proper…
We present kinematics of a sample of 107 DA white dwarfs from the SPY project and discuss kinematic criteria for a distinction of thin disk, thick disk, and halo populations. This is the first homogeneous sample of white dwarfs for which 3D space motions have been determined. Studies of white dwarf kinematics can help determine the fraction of the total mass of our Galaxy contained in the form of thick disk and halo white dwarfs. Radial velocities and spectroscopic distances obtained by the SPY project are combined with our measurements of proper motions to derive 3D space motions. Galactic or…
An abundance analysis is presented of 60 metal-poor stars drawn from catalogues of nearby stars provided by Ariyanto et al. (2005) and Schuster et al. (2006). In an attempt to isolate a sample of metal-weak thick disc stars, we applied the kinematic criteria $V_{\rm rot} \geq 100$ km s$^{-1}$, $|U_{LSR}| \leq 140$ km s$^{-1}$, and $|W_{LSR}| \leq 100$ km s$^{-1}$. Fourteen stars satisfying these criteria and having [Fe/H] $\leq -1.0$ are included in the sample of 60 stars. Eight of the 14 have [Fe/H] $\geq -1.3$ and may be simply thick disc stars of slightly lower than average [Fe/H]. The othe…
We present kinematics of a sample of 398 DA white dwarfs from the SPY project (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY) and discuss kinematic criteria for a distinction of thin disk, thick disk, and halo populations. This is the largest homogeneous sample of white dwarfs for which 3D space motions have been determined. Radial velocities and spectroscopic distances obtained by the SPY project are combined with our measurements of proper motions to derive 3D space motions. Galactic orbits and further kinematic parameters are computed. Our kinematic criteria for assigning population membership are deduced fr…
(Abbreviated) We present a detailed analysis of the space motions of 1203 solar-neighborhood stars with metal abundances [Fe/H] <= -0.6, on the basis of a recently revised and supplemented catalog of metal-poor stars selected without kinematic bias (Beers et al. 2000). This sample, having available proper motions, radial velocities, and distance estimates for stars with a wide range of metal abundances, is by far the largest such catalog to be assembled to date. Unlike essentially all previous kinematically selected catalogs, the metal-poor stars in our sample exhibit a diverse distribution of…
We analyse the kinematics of the entire spectroscopic sample of 99 recently discovered high proper-motion white dwarfs by Oppenheimer et al. using a maximum-likelihood analysis, and discuss the claim that the high-velocity white dwarfs are members of a halo population with a local density at least ten times greater than traditionally assumed. We argue that the observations, as reported, are consistent with the presence of an almost undetected thin disc plus a thick disc, with densities as conventionally assumed. In addition, there is a kinematically distinct, flattened, halo population at the …
Full space velocities are computed for a sample of 130 nearby RR Lyrae variables using both ground-based and Hipparcos proper motions. In many cases proper motions from multiple sources have been averaged to produce a significant improvement in the transverse space velocity errors. In most cases, this exceeds the accuracy of Hipparcos proper motions alone. The velocity ellipsoids computed for halo and thick disk samples are in agreement with previous studies. No distinct sample of thin disk RR Lyraes has been isolated but there is kinematic evidence for some thin disk stars in our thick disk s…
We have investigated the abundance of several chemical elements in two large stellar samples kinematically representative of the thin and the thick disks of the Galaxy. Chemical, kinematical and age data have been collected from high quality sources in the literature. Velocities (U,V,W) have been computed and used to select stars with the highest probability to belong to the thin disk and the thick disk respectively. Our results show that the two disks are chemically well separated. Both exhibit a decline of [$α$/Fe] with increasing [Fe/H]. A transition between the thin/thick disks stars is ob…
A new metallicity distribution and an age-metallicity relation are presented for 437 nearby F and G turn-off and sub-giant stars selected from radial velocity data of Nidever et al. Photometric metallicities are derived from uvby-Hβphotometry, and the stellar ages from the isochrones of Bergbusch & VandenBerg as transformed to $uvby$ photometry using the methods of Clem et al. The X (stellar-population) criterion of Schuster et al., which combines both kinematic and metallicity information, provides 22 thick-disk stars. σ_{\rm W} = 32 \pm 5 km s^{-1}, <V_{\rm rot}> = 154 \pm 6 km s^{-1} and <[…
We report medium-resolution (1-2 A) spectroscopy and broadband (UBV) photometry for a sample of 39 bright stars (the majority of which are likely to be giants) selected as metal-deficient candidates from an objective-prism survey concentrating on Galactic latitudes below |b| = 30 deg, the LSE survey of Drilling & Bergeron. Although the primary purpose of the LSE survey was to select OB stars (hence the concentration on low latitudes), the small number of bright metal-deficient giant candidates noted during this survey provide interesting information on the metal-weak thick disk (MWTD) populati…
We present a progress report on the kinematical analysis of the entire SPY (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY) sample of about one thousand white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs. In a previous study (Pauli et al. 2003, 2006) 398 DA white dwarfs have been analysed already. Here we extend the study to 634 DA white dwarfs. We discuss kinematic criteria for a distinction of thin disk, thick disk and halo populations. This is the largest homogeneous sample of white dwarfs for which accurate 3D space motions have been determined. They have been derived from radial velocities, spectroscopic distances and proper m…
A detailed study of nearby, morphologically normal Sa galaxies reveals that about half show some spectrocopic evidence for kinematically distinct components despite their undisturbed optical appearance. In eight of nine objects mapped in the 21 cm HI line, the HI distribution extends far outside the optical disk and warps of the HI disk are complex. The multiwavelength evidence can be interpreted in terms of the kinematic "memory" of past minor mergers in objects that otherwise exhibit no morphological signs of interaction.
We present an analysis of the space motions of 742 subdwarf stars based on the sample of Carney et al. (1994, CLLA). Hipparcos parallaxes, TYC2+HIP proper motions and Tycho2 proper motions were combined with radial velocities and metallicities from CLLA. The kinematical behavior is discussed in particular in relation to their metallicities. The majority of these sample stars have metal abundances of [Fe/H] >-1 and represent the thick disk population. The halo component, with [Fe/H] <-1.6, is characterized by a low mean rotation velocity and a radially elongated velocity ellipsoid. In the inter…
We have carried out a sample survey in UBVR photometry and proper motions in different directions in the Galaxy, as part of an investigation of galactic structure and evolution. Three fields in the direction of galactic anticentre, centre and antirotation have been surveyed. Using our new data together with wide-area surveys in other fields available to date, we discuss the radial and vertical structure of the Galaxy. The density laws for stars with M$_{V}\ge$3.5 follow a sum of two exponentials with scale heights of 260$\pm$50 pc (thin disk) and 760$\pm$50 pc, respectively. This second expone…
We have performed the detailed analysis of 174 high-resolution spectra of FGK dwarfs obtained with the ELODIE echelle spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. Abundances of Fe, Si and Ni have been determined from equivalent widths under LTE approximation, whereas abundances of Mg have been determined under NLTE approximation using equivalent widths of 4 lines and profiles of 5 lines. Spatial velocities with an accuracy better than 1 km/s, as well as orbits, have been computed for all stars. They have been used to define 2 subsamples kinematically representative of the thin disk and …
The abundances of iron and oxygen are homogeneously determined in a sample of 523 nearby (d<150 pc) FGK disk and halo stars with metallicities in the range -1.5<[Fe/H]<0.5. The oxygen abundances were inferred from a restricted non-LTE analysis of the 777 nm O I triplet. We use the stellar kinematics to compute the probabilities of our sample stars to be members of the thin disk, thick disk, or halo of the Galaxy. We find that the majority of the kinematically-selected thick-disk stars show larger [O/Fe] ratios compared to thin-disk stars. A close examination of this pattern for disk stars with…
We present simulations of the formation of thick disks via the accretion of two-component satellites onto a pre-existing thin disk. Our goal is to establish the detailed characteristics of the thick disks obtained in this way, as well as their dependence on the initial orbital and internal properties of the accreted objects. We find that mergers with 10-20% mass of the mass of the host lead to the formation of thick disks whose characteristics are similar, both in morphology as in kinematics, to those observed. Despite the relatively large mass ratios, the host disks are not fully destroyed by…
Accurate characterization of thick disc properties from recent kinematic and photometric surveys provides converging evidences that this intermediate population is a sequel of the violent heating of early disc populations by a merging satellite galaxy. The thick disc population is revisited under the light of new data in a number of galactic sample fields. Various thick disc hypotheses are fitted to observational data through a maximum likelihood technique. The resulting characteristics of the thick disc are the following : a scale height of 760 $\pm$ 50 pc, with a local density of 5.6 $\pm$ 1…
The neutral hydrogen line profiles along the major axis of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2403 show a wing towards the sytemic velocity. This asymmetry can be explained with the presence of an abnormally thick HI disk (FWHM ~ 5 kpc) or with a two-component structure: a thin disk and a slowly rotating, thicker (1-3 kpc) HI layer. The latter model gives a better representation of the observations. These results throw a new light on the disk-halo connection. In particular, the decrease of rotational velocity with height above the plane may be the result of a galactic fountain flow. A vertically ext…
We have analysed the kinematics of a sample of 114 hot subdwarf stars, for 2/3 of which we present new proper motions, spectroscopic and photometric data. The vast majority of the stars show a kinematic behaviour that is similar to that of Thick Disk stars. Some stars have velocities rather fitting to solar, i.e. Thin Disk, kinematics. 16 objects have orbital velocities which differ considerably from those of Disk stars. These are members of the Galactic Halo. We analysed the velocity dispersions and calculated orbits. Most stars feature orbits with disk character (eccentricity <= 0.5), a few …
We present new observational results on the kinematics of the damped lya systems. Our full sample is now comprised of 31 low-ion profiles and exhibits similar characteristics to the sample from Paper I. The primary exception is that the new distribution of velocity widths includes values out to a maximum of nearly 300 km/s, approx 100 km/s greater than the previous maximum. These high velocity width systems will significantly leverage models introduced to explain the damped lya systems. Comparing the characteristics from low-redshift and high-redshift sub-samples, we find no evidence for signi…
We have compiled a large catalogue of metallicities and abundance ratios from the literature in order to investigate abundance trends of several alpha and iron peak elements in the thin disk and the thick disk of the Galaxy. The catalogue includes 743 stars with abundances of Fe, O, Mg, Ca, Ti, Si, Na, Ni and Al in the metallicity range -1.30 < [Fe/H] < +0.50. We have checked that systematic differences between abundances measured in the different studies were lower than random errors before combining them. Accurate distances and proper motions from Hipparcos, and radial velocities from severa…
GAIA data will create a precise 3-dimensional map of the Galaxy, providing positional information, radial velocities, luminosity, temperature and chemical composition of a representative sample of stars. Here we present a new implementation of the Padova Galaxy Model, where kinematics simulations are included. A few examples of application to GAIA science are discussed, in particular concerning radial velocities determinations of the thin and thick disk.
We present new statistical parallax solutions for the absolute magnitude and kinematics of RR Lyrae stars. New proper motion, radial velocity, and abundance data are used; the new data set is 50% larger, and of higher quality, than previously available data sets. Based on an a priori kinematic study, we separate the stars into halo and thick disk sub-populations. Statistical parallax solutions on these sub-samples yield M_V(RR) = +0.71 +/- 0.12 at <[Fe/H]> = -1.61 for the halo (162 stars), and M_V(RR) = +0.79 +/- 0.30 at <[Fe/H]> = -0.76 for the thick disk (51 stars). The solutions yield kinem…
We present the first results of a larger study into the stellar abundances and chemical trends in long-lived dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood that belong to (based on their kinematics) the thin and thick galactic disk, respectively. We confirm that the trends of alpha-elements in the thin and thick disk are distinct (this has previously been shown for Mg by Fuhrmann 1998, but e.g. Chen et al. 2000 claimed the trends to follow smoothly upon each other). We find that the thick disk show the typical signature of contribution from SN Ia (i.e. the ``knee'') to the enrichment of the interstell…
The kinematical properties of the Galactic Thick Disk are studied using absolute proper motions from the SPM3 Catalog and 2MASS near-infrared photometry for a sample of ~1200 red giants in the direction of the South Galactic Pole. The photometrically-selected sample is dominated by Thick Disk stars, as indicated by the number-density distribution that varies with distance from the Galactic plane as a single-valued exponential over the range 1<z<4 kpc. The inferred scale height of the Thick Disk is 0.783 +/- 0.048 kpc. The kinematics of the sample are also consistent with disk-like motion. The …
We present the results of our investigation of three samples kinematically representative of the thin and thick disks and the Hercules stream using the catalogue of Soubiran & Girard (2005). We have observed abundance trends and age distribution of each component. Our results show that the two disks are chemically well separated, they overlap greatly in metallicity and both show parallel decreasing trends of alpha elements with increasing metallicity, in the interval -0.80 < [Fe/H] < -0.30. The thick disk is clearly older than the thin disk with a tentative evidence of an Age-Metallicity Relat…
Major axis rotation curves and velocity dispersions profiles, extending out to about one effective radius, are presented for 15 ellipticals and S0's out of the photometric sample of Fornax cluster galaxies studied by Caon \etal\ (1994). A brief description of the spectroscopic and photometric characteristics of each galaxy is provided, together with a comparison with previous studies. Six of the nine E's are possibly misclassified S0's or ellipticals harboring a disk-like component. Two galaxies (NGC~1399 and 1404) show a hint of counter-rotation. Evidence is given that the \bright\ and the \o…
We show that the Galactic thick disk reaches at least solar metallicities, and that it experienced strong chemical enrichment during a period of ~3 Gyr, ending around 8-9 Gyr ago. This finding puts further constraints on the relation and interface between the thin and thick disks, and their formation processes. Our results are based on a detailed elemental abundance analysis of 261 kinematically selected F and G dwarf stars in the solar neighborhood: 194 likely members of the thick disk and 67 likely members of the thin disk, in the range -1.3<[Fe/H]<+0.4.
Spectroscopic observations of three lenticular (S0) galaxies (NGC 1167, NGC 4150, and NGC 6340) and one SBa galaxy (NGC 2273) have been taken with the 6-m telescope of the Special AstrophysicalObservatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences aimed to study the structure and kinematic properties of early-type disk galaxies. The radial profiles of the stellar radial velocities and the velocity dispersion are measured. N-body simulations are used to construct dynamical models of galaxies containing a stellar disk, bulge, and halo. The masses of individual components are estimated formaximum-mass di…
We have traced the Galactic thick disk to its, to date, highest metallicities. Based on high-resolution spectroscopic observations of 187 F and G dwarf stars that kinematically can be associated either with the thin disk (60 stars) or with the thick disk (127 stars), we find that the thick disk stars reach at least solar metallicities, and maybe even higher. This finding is independent of the U_LSR, V_LSR and W_LSR velocities of the stars.
We study the Milky Way region Z<3.0 kpc, where the thick disk and inner halo overlap, by using the kinematics of local blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars (within 1 kpc) and new samples of BHB stars and A-type stars from the Century Survey. We derive Galactic U,V,W velocities for these BHB and A-type star samples using proper motions from the NOMAD catalog. The mean velocities and the velocity dispersions of the BHB samples (Z<3 kpc) are characteristic of the halo, while those of the Century Survey A-type stars are characteristic of the thick disk. There is no evidence from our samples that the…
We investigate the kinematics of the intermediate population using the photometric and astrometric sample surveys towards two opposite directions (galactic centre and anticentre) at intermediate latitude. A multivariate discriminant analysis (MDA) is used to distinguish the `Thick Disk' from other populations with the help of the Besan\c con model of population synthesis. The data constrain the asymmetric drift of the intermediate population, which is found to be 40$\pm$10 km sec$^{-1}$ and does not depend on the galactic radius.
We discuss the age of the stellar disks in the solar neighbourhood. After reviewing the various methods for age dating we discuss current estimates of the age of both the thin and the thick disk. We present preliminary results for kinematically-selected stars that belong to the thin as well as the thick disk. All of these dwarf and sub-giant stars have been studied spectroscopically and we have derived both elemental abundances as well as ages for them. A general conclusion is that in the solar neighbourhood, on average, the thick disk is older than the thin disk. However, we caution that the …
The current knowledge of the abundance structure in the Milky Way is reviewed. Special emphasis is put on recent results for stars with kinematics typical of the thin and the thick disks, respectively, and how these results can, apart from studying the Milky Way also give information about the origin of the elements. Two on-going studies are high-lighted. One that presents new data for stars with kinematics typical of the Hercules stream and one for a small number of dwarf stars high above the galactic plane. These indicate that the thick disk is a homogeneous structure and that the Hercules s…
We report the discovery of seven high proper motion stars with proper motions between about 0.7 and 2.2 arcsec/yr. They were detected in an archival search using multi-epoch positions in the optical SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys and in the near-infrared sky surveys 2MASS and DENIS. The star with the largest proper motion, is spectroscopically classified as a very nearby (d=8pc) M5.5 dwarf with Galactic thin disk kinematics. A second star with about 2 arcsec/yr proper motion, is still lacking spectroscopic confirmation but can be classified from photometry as thick disk M3.5 dwarf. Three objects turn…
The study of galaxy evolution using quasar absorption lines requires an understanding of what components of galaxies and their surroundings are contributing to the absorption in various transitions. This paper considers the kinematic composition of the class of 0.4 < z < 1.0 MgII absorbers, particularly addressing the question of what fraction of this absorption is produced in halos and what fraction arises from galaxy disks. We design models with various fractional contributions from radial infall of halo material and from a rotating thick disk component. We generate synthetic spectra from li…
The Milky Way harbours two disks that appear distinct concerning scale-heights, kinematics, and elemental abundance patterns. Recent years have seen a surge of studies of the elemental abundance trends in the disks using high resolution spectroscopy. Here I will review and discuss the currently available data. Special focus will also be put on how we define stars to be members of either disk, and how current models of galaxy formation favour that thick disks are formed from several accreted bodies. The ability for the stellar abundance trends to test such predictions are discussed.
The predictions from a Galactic Structure and Kinematic model code are compared to the color counts and absolute proper-motions derived from the Southern Proper-Motion survey covering more than 700 $°^2$ toward the South Galactic Pole in the range $9 < B_{\rm J} \le 19$. The theoretical assumptions and associated computational procedures, the geometry for the kinematic model, and the adopted parameters are presented in detail and compared to other Galactic Kinematic models of its kind. The data to which the model is compared consists of more than 30,000 randomly selected stars, and it is best …
Nearly 400 Tycho-2 stars have been observed in a 720 square degree field in the direction of the North Galactic Pole with the high resolution echelle spectrograph ELODIE. Absolute magnitudes, effective temperatures, gravities and metallicities have been estimated, as well as distances and 3D velocities. Most of these stars are clump giants and span typical distances from 200pc to 800pc to the galactic mid-plane. This new sample, free of any kinematical and metallicity bias, is used to investigate the vertical distribution of disk stars. The old thin disk and thick disk populations are deconvol…
