An abundance analysis is presented of 60 metal-poor stars drawn from catalogues of nearby stars provided by Ariyanto et al. (2005) and Schuster et al. (2006). In an attempt to isolate a sample of metal-weak thick disc stars, we applied the kinematic criteria $V_{\rm rot} \geq 100$ km s$^{-1}$, $|U_{LSR}| \leq 140$ km s$^{-1}$, and $|W_{LSR}| \leq 100$ km s$^{-1}$. Fourteen stars satisfying these criteria and having [Fe/H] $\leq -1.0$ are included in the sample of 60 stars. Eight of the 14 have [Fe/H] $\geq -1.3$ and may be simply thick disc stars of slightly lower than average [Fe/H]. The other six have [Fe/H] from -1.3 to -2.3 and are either metal-weak thick disc stars or halo stars with kinematics mimicking those of the thick disc. The sample of 60 stars is completed by eight thick disc stars, 20 stars of a hybrid nature (halo or thick disc stars), and 18 stars with kinematics distinctive of the halo.
The chemical composition of Earth's atmosphere has undergone substantial evolution over the course of its history. It is possible, even likely, that terrestrial planets in other planetary systems have undergone similar changes; consequently, the age distribution of nearby stars is an important consideration in designing surveys for Earth-analogues. Valenti & Fischer (2005) provide age and metallicity estimates for 1039 FGK dwarfs in the Solar Neighbourhood. Using the Hipparcos catalogue as a reference to calibrate potential biases, we have extracted volume-limited samples of nearby stars from …
We derive age-metallicity relations (AMRs) and orbital parameters for the 1658 solar neighbourhood stars to which accurate distances are measured by the HIPPARCOS satellite. The sample stars comprise 1382 thin disc stars, 229 thick disc stars, and 47 halo stars according to their orbital parameters. We find a considerable scatter for thin disc AMR along the one-zone Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) model. Orbits and metallicities of thin disc stars show now clear relation each other. The scatter along the AMR exists even if the stars with the same orbits are selected. We examine simple extens…
In this contribution we outline plans for identifying and characterising numerous young, low-mass stars within 150 pc of the Sun using the new SkyMapper telescope and Southern Sky Survey. We aim to learn more about the star formation history of the solar neighbourhood over the past 5-50 Myr, the dispersal processes involved, as well as testing pre-main sequence evolutionary models and the universality of the stellar Inital Mass Function. Searching for the dispersed halo of low-mass objects predicted to surround the Eta Chamaeleontis cluster will be one of the first goals of the project.
We discuss the age of the stellar disks in the solar neighbourhood. After reviewing the various methods for age dating we discuss current estimates of the age of both the thin and the thick disk. We present preliminary results for kinematically-selected stars that belong to the thin as well as the thick disk. All of these dwarf and sub-giant stars have been studied spectroscopically and we have derived both elemental abundances as well as ages for them. A general conclusion is that in the solar neighbourhood, on average, the thick disk is older than the thin disk. However, we caution that the …
A new metallicity distribution and an age-metallicity relation are presented for 437 nearby F and G turn-off and sub-giant stars selected from radial velocity data of Nidever et al. Photometric metallicities are derived from uvby-Hβphotometry, and the stellar ages from the isochrones of Bergbusch & VandenBerg as transformed to $uvby$ photometry using the methods of Clem et al. The X (stellar-population) criterion of Schuster et al., which combines both kinematic and metallicity information, provides 22 thick-disk stars. σ_{\rm W} = 32 \pm 5 km s^{-1}, <V_{\rm rot}> = 154 \pm 6 km s^{-1} and <[…
We present a revised metallicity distribution of dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. This distribution is centred on solar metallicity. We show that previous metallicity distributions, selected on the basis of spectral type, are biased against stars with solar metallicity or higher. A selection of G-dwarf stars is inherently biased against metal rich stars and is not representative of the solar neighbourhood metallicity distribution. Using a sample selected on colour, we obtain a distribution where approximately half the stars in the solar neighbourhood has a metallicity higher than [Fe/H]=0. T…
We have searched for in-falling stellar streams on to the local Milky Way disc in the CORAVEL and RAVE surveys. The CORAVEL survey consists of local dwarf stars (Nordstrom et al. Geneva-Copenhagen survey) and local Famaey et al. giant stars. We select RAVE stars with radial velocities that are sensitive to the Galactic vertical space velocity (Galactic latitude b < -45 deg). Kuiper statistics have been employed to test the symmetry of the Galactic vertical velocity distribution functions in these samples for evidence of a net vertical flow that could be associated with a (tidal?) stream of sta…
The disk galaxy simulated using our chemo-dynamical galaxy formation code, GCD+, is shown to have a thick disk component. This is evidenced by the velocity dispersion versus age relation for solar neighbourhood stars, which clearly shows an abrupt increase in velocity dispersion at lookback time of approximately 8 Gyrs, and is in excellent agreement with observation. These thick disk stars are formed from gas which is accreted to the galaxy during a chaotic period of hierarchical clustering at high redshift. This formation scenario is shown to be consistent with observations of both the Milky …
We present a detailed study on the kinematics of metal-rich stars with and without planets, and their relation with the Hyades, Sirius and Hercules dynamical streams in the solar neighbourhood. Accurate kinematics have been derived for all the stars belonging to the CORALIE planet search survey. We used precise radial velocity measurements and CCF parameters from the CORALIE database, and parallaxes, photometry and proper motions from the HIPPARCOS and Tycho-2 catalogues. The location of stars with planets in the thin or thick discs has been analysed using both kinematic and chemical constrain…
A method for inverting the statistical star counts equation, including proper motions, is presented; in order to break the degeneracy in that equation it uses the supplementary constraints required by dynamical consistency. The inversion gives access to both the kinematics and the luminosity function of each population in three régimes: the singular ellipsoid, the constant ratio Schwarzschild ellipsoid plane parallel models and the epicyclic model. This more realistic model is taylored to account for local neighbourhood density and velocity distribution. The first model is fully investigated b…
Ages, metallicities, space velocities, and Galactic orbits of stars in the Solar neighbourhood are fundamental observational constraints on models of galactic disk evolution. We aim to consolidate the calibrations of uvby photometry into Te, [Fe/H], distance, and age for F and G stars and rediscuss the results of the Geneva-Copenhagen Survey (Nordstrom et al. 2004; GCS) in terms of the evolution of the disk. We substantially improve the Te and [Fe/H] calibrations for early F stars, where spectroscopic temperatures have large systematic errors. Our recomputed ages are in excellent agreement wit…
We present oxygen abundances for 72 F and G dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood. Using the kinematics of the stars we divide them into two sub-samples with space velocities that are typical for the thick and thin disks, respectively. The metallicities of the stars range from [Fe/H] = -0.9 to +0.4 and we use the derived oxygen abundances of the stars to: (1) perform a differential study of the oxygen trends in the thin and the thick disk; (2) to follow the trend of oxygen in the thin disk to the highest metallicities. We analyze the forbidden oxygen lines at 6300 Å and 6363 Å as well as the …
The Canis Major overdensity (CMa) was initially proposed to be the remnant of a tidally disrupting dSph galaxy. Since its nature is still subject of debate, the goal of the present work was to conduct a large-scale RR Lyrae survey in CMa, in order to see if there is an overdensity of these stars. The survey spans a total area of ~34 sq. deg. with observations in V and R filters, made with the 1.0m Jurgen Stock Schmidt telescope at the National Astronomical Observatory of Venezuela. Current results in a subregion, including spectroscopic observations, show that the small number of RR Lyrae star…
We present the first results of a larger study into the stellar abundances and chemical trends in long-lived dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood that belong to (based on their kinematics) the thin and thick galactic disk, respectively. We confirm that the trends of alpha-elements in the thin and thick disk are distinct (this has previously been shown for Mg by Fuhrmann 1998, but e.g. Chen et al. 2000 claimed the trends to follow smoothly upon each other). We find that the thick disk show the typical signature of contribution from SN Ia (i.e. the ``knee'') to the enrichment of the interstell…
The empirical differential metallicity distribution (EDMD) is deduced for (i) local thick disk stars; (ii) likely metal-weak thick disk stars; (iii) chemically selected local G dwarfs, with the corrections performed in order to take into account the stellar scale height; in addition to previous results related to (iv) solar neighbourhood halo subdwarfs; and (v) K-giant bulge stars. The thick disk is conceived as made of two distinct regions: the halo-like and the bulge-like thick disk, and the related EDMD is deduced. Under the assumption that each distribution is typical for the corresponding…
We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age, kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, and kinematically unbiased sample of 16,682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our 63,000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13,500 stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sample and, together with published data complete the kinematic information for 14,139 stars. A major effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone ages for all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has been given to a re…
The analysis of the kinematics of solar neighbourhood stars shows that the low and high metallicity tails of the thin disc are populated by objects which orbital properties suggest an origin in the outer and inner galactic disc, respectively. Signatures of radial migration are identified in various recent samples, and are shown to be responsible for the high metallicity dispersion in the age-metallicity distribution. Most importantly, it is shown that the population of low metallicity wanderers of the thin disc (-0.7<[Fe/H]<-0.3 dex) is also responsible for the apparent hiatus in metallicity w…
In a LCDM cosmology, the Milky Way accretes satellites into the stellar disc. We use cosmological simulations to assess the frequency of near disc plane and higher inclination accretion events, and collisionless simulations of satellite mergers to quantify the final state of the accreted material and the effect on the thin disc. On average, a Milky Way-sized galaxy has 3 subhalos with vmax>80km/s; 7 with vmax>60km/s; and 15 with vmax>40km/s merge at redshift z>1. Assuming isotropic accretion, a third of these merge at an impact angle <20 degrees and are dragged into the disc plane by dynamical…
The empirical differential oxygen abundance distribution (EDOD) is deduced from subsamples related to two different samples involving solar neighbourhood (SN) thick disk, thin disk, halo, and bulge stars. The EDOD of the SN thick + thin disk is determined by weighting the mass, for assumed SN thick to thin disk mass ratio within the range, 0.1-0.9. Inhomogeneous models of chemical evolution for the SN thick disk, the SN thin disk, the SN thick + thin disk, the SN halo, and the bulge, are computed assuming the instantaneous recycling approximation. The EDOD data are fitted, to an acceptable ext…
The accurate O, Mg and Fe abundances derived in previous papers of this series from a homogenous reanalysis of high quality data for a large sample of stars are combined with stellar kinematics in order to discuss the history of star formation in the solar neighborhood. We found that the Fe/O and Fe/Mg abundance ratios are roughly constant in the (inner) halo and the thick disk; this means that the timescale of halo collapse was shorter than or of the same order of typical lifetime of progenitors of type Ia SNe (~ 1 Gyr), this conclusion being somewhat relaxed (referring to star formation in t…
Models of the chemical evolution of our Galaxy are extended to include radial migration of stars and flow of gas through the disc. The models track the production of both iron and alpha elements. A model is chosen that provides an excellent fit to the metallicity distribution of stars in the Geneva-Copenhagen survey (GCS) of the solar neighbourhood, and a good fit to the local Hess diagram. The model provides a good fit to the distribution of GCS stars in the age-metallicity plane although this plane was not used in the fitting process. Although this model's star-formation rate is monotonic de…
We have developed a photometric abundance indicator for G and K dwarfs, based on accurate, spectroscopically determined abundances for G and K dwarfs of Morell, Källander and Butcher (1992) and Morell (1994). Broadband Cousins R-I photometry is used to estimate effective temperature and the Geneva b_1 colour to estimate line blanketing in the blue and hence abundance. Abundances can be derived in the range -2.0<[Fe/H]<0.5 for G0 to K3 dwarfs, with a scatter in [Fe/H] of 0.2 dex. We apply the method to a sample of Gliese catalog G and K dwarfs, and examine the metallicity and kinematic properti…
We establish an extragalactic, zero-motion frame of reference within the deepest optical image of a globular star cluster, an HST 123-orbit exposure of M4 (GO 8679, cycle 9). The line of sight beyond M4 (l,b (deg) = 351,16) intersects the inner halo (spheroid) of our Galaxy at a tangent-point distance of 7.6 kpc (for Ro = 8 kpc). We isolate these spheroid stars from the cluster based on their proper motions over the 6-year baseline between these and previous epoch HST data (GO 5461, cycle 4). Distant background galaxies are also found on the same sight line using image-morphology techniques. T…
The study of the Milky Way stellar discs in the context of galaxy formation is discussed. In particular we explore the properties of the Milky Way disc using a new sample of about 550 dwarf stars for which we have recently obtained elemental abundances and ages based on high resolution spectroscopy. For all the stars we also have full kinematic information as well as information about their stellar orbits. We confirm results from previous studies that the thin and the thick disc have distinct abundance patterns. But we also explore a larger range of orbital parameters than what has been possib…
