We study the Milky Way region Z<3.0 kpc, where the thick disk and inner halo overlap, by using the kinematics of local blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars (within 1 kpc) and new samples of BHB stars and A-type stars from the Century Survey. We derive Galactic U,V,W velocities for these BHB and A-type star samples using proper motions from the NOMAD catalog. The mean velocities and the velocity dispersions of the BHB samples (Z<3 kpc) are characteristic of the halo, while those of the Century Survey A-type stars are characteristic of the thick disk. There is no evidence from our samples that the BHB stars rotate with the thick disk in the region Z<3 kpc. Nearly a third of the nearby local RR Lyrae stars have disk kinematics and are more metal-rich than [Fe/H]~-1. Only a few percent of the Century Survey BHB stars have these properties. Only one nearby BHB star (HD 130201) is likely to be such a disk star but selection based on high proper motions will have tended to exclude such stars from the local sample. The scale height derived from a sample of local RR Lyrae stars agrees with that of the Century Survey BHB stars. The local samples of BHB stars and metal-weak red giants are too incomplete for a similar comparison.
We present a complete spectroscopic survey of 2414 2MASS-selected blue horizontal branch (BHB) candidates selected over 4300 deg^2 of the sky. We identify 655 BHB stars in this non-kinematically selected sample. We calculate the luminosity function of field BHB stars and find evidence for very few hot BHB stars in the field. The BHB stars located at a distance from the Galactic plane |Z|<4 kpc trace what is clearly a metal-weak thick disk population, with a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]= -1.7, a rotation velocity gradient of dv_{rot}/d|Z|= -28+-3.4 km/s in the region |Z|<6 kpc, and a density scal…
We use 2MASS photometry to select blue horizontal branch (BHB) candidates covering the sky |b|>15 deg. A 12.5<J<15.5 sample of BHB stars traces the thick disk and inner halo to d<9 kpc, with a density comparable to that of M giant stars. We base our sample selection strategy on the Century Survey Galactic Halo Project, a survey that provides a complete, spectroscopically-identified sample of blue stars to a similar depth as the 2MASS catalog. We show that a -0.20<(J-H)_0<0.10, -0.10<(H-K)_0<0.10 color-selected sample of stars is 65% complete for BHB stars, and is composed of 47% BHB stars. We …
The radial velocity dispersion of 67 RR Lyrae variable and blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars that are more than 4 kpc above the galactic plane at the North Galactic Pole is 110 km/sec and shows no trend with Z (the height above the galactic plane). Nine stars with Z < 4 kpc show a smaller velocity dispersion (40 +/-9 km/sec) as is to be expected if they mostly belong to a population with a flatter distribution. Both RR Lyrae stars and BHB stars show evidence of stream motion; the most significant is in fields RR2 and RR3 where 24 stars in the range 4.0 < Z < 11.0 kpc have a mean radial veloci…
We present VLT-FORS1 spectra of a sample of 34 faint 20.0 < g* < 21.1 A-type stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, with the goal of measuring the velocity dispersion of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in the remote Galactic halo, R~80kpc. We show that colour selection with 1.08 < u*-g* < 1.40 and -0.2 < g*-r* < -0.04 minimises contamination of the sample by less luminous blue stragglers. In classifying the stars we confine our attention to the 20 stars with spectra of signal-to-noise ratio > 15 per Angstrom. Classification produces a sample of eight BHB stars …
We report on the recovery of a Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) population belonging to the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Sgr). The sequence is clearly identified in the (V, V-I) Color Magnitude Diagram (CMD) obtained for about 500,000 stars in the region of the globular cluster M~54. The BHB morphology is similar to the analogous sequence in M~54, but it is unambiguously associated with Sgr since {\it(i)} it is detected well outside the main body of the cluster, up to more than 5 tidal radii from the cluster center and {\it(ii)} the BHB stars follow the radial distribution of the other ste…
A search for lithium is performed on seven metal poor dwarfs with metallicities ranging from [Fe/H]=-1.5 down to [Fe/H]=-3.0 but showing disk-like kinematics. These stars belong to the metal poor tail of the Galactic thick disk and they may be also the result of an accretion event (Beers and Sommer-Larsen 1995). The Li 6707.8 A line is present in all the seven dwarfs. The weighted average of the Li abundance for the stars is A(Li)=2.20 (+/-0.06) and is consistent within the errors with the plateau Li abundance of A(Li)=2.24(+/- 0.012) found in genuine halo stars in the same range of metallicit…
We have investigated the abundance of several chemical elements in two large stellar samples kinematically representative of the thin and the thick disks of the Galaxy. Chemical, kinematical and age data have been collected from high quality sources in the literature. Velocities (U,V,W) have been computed and used to select stars with the highest probability to belong to the thin disk and the thick disk respectively. Our results show that the two disks are chemically well separated. Both exhibit a decline of [$α$/Fe] with increasing [Fe/H]. A transition between the thin/thick disks stars is ob…
We discuss the age of the stellar disks in the solar neighbourhood. After reviewing the various methods for age dating we discuss current estimates of the age of both the thin and the thick disk. We present preliminary results for kinematically-selected stars that belong to the thin as well as the thick disk. All of these dwarf and sub-giant stars have been studied spectroscopically and we have derived both elemental abundances as well as ages for them. A general conclusion is that in the solar neighbourhood, on average, the thick disk is older than the thin disk. However, we caution that the …
Studies of elemental abundances in stars belonging to the thin and the thick disk of our Galaxy are reviewed. Edvardsson et al. (1993) found strong evidence of [alpha/Fe] variations among F and G main sequence stars with the same [Fe/H] and interpreted these differences as due to radial gradients in the star formation rate in the Galactic disk. Several recent studies suggest, however, that the differences are mainly due to a separation in [alpha/Fe] between thin and thick disk stars, indicating that these populations are discrete Galactic components, as also found from several kinematical stud…
We present measurements of the projected stellar rotation velocities (v sin i) of a sample of 45 candidate field horizontal-branch (HB) stars spanning a wide range of effective temperature, from red HB stars with Teff ~ 5000 K to blue HB stars with Teff of 17000 K. Among the cooler blue HB stars (Teff = 7500-11500 K), we confirm prior studies showing that although a majority of stars rotate at v sin i < 15 km/s, there exists a subset of "fast rotators" with v sin i as high as 30-35 km/s. All but one of the red HB stars in our sample have v sin i < 10 km/s, and no analogous rotation bimodality …
We have studied 23 long-lived G dwarfs that belong to the thin disk and thick disk stellar populations. Abundances have been derived for 24 elements: O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, and Eu. We find that the behavior of [alpha/Fe] and [Eu/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] are quite different for the two populations. As has long been known, the thin disk O, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti ratios are enhanced relative to iron at the lowest metallicities, and decline toward solar values as [Fe/H] rises above -1.0. For the thick disk, the decline in [alpha/Fe] and [Eu/Fe] d…
We present the first results of a larger study into the stellar abundances and chemical trends in long-lived dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood that belong to (based on their kinematics) the thin and thick galactic disk, respectively. We confirm that the trends of alpha-elements in the thin and thick disk are distinct (this has previously been shown for Mg by Fuhrmann 1998, but e.g. Chen et al. 2000 claimed the trends to follow smoothly upon each other). We find that the thick disk show the typical signature of contribution from SN Ia (i.e. the ``knee'') to the enrichment of the interstell…
The interpretation of the old, cool white dwarfs recently found by Oppenheimer et al. (2001) is still controversial. Whereas these authors claim that they have finally found the elusive ancient halo white dwarf population that contributes significantly to the mass budget of the galactic halo, there have been several other contributions that argue that these white dwarfs are not genuine halo members but, instead, thick disk stars. We show here that the interpretation of this sample is based on the adopted distances, which are obtained from a color--magnitude calibration, and we demonstrate that…
[Abridged abstract] We have performed an abundance analysis for 176 F- and G- dwarfs of the Galactic thick disk component. Using accurate radial velocities combined with $Hipparcos$ astrometry, kinematics (U, V, and W) and Galactic orbital parameters were computed. We estimate the probability for a star to belong to the thin disk, the thick disk or the halo. Abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Ba, Ce, Nd, and Eu have been obtained. The abundances for thick disk stars are compared with those for thin disk members from Reddy et al. (2003). The ratios…
We perform a detailed photometric study of the stellar populations in a Galactic Field at l = 232, b = -6 in the Canis Major (CMa) constellation. We present the first U,B,V,I photometry of the old open cluster Auner1 and determine it to be 3.25 Gyr old and to lie at 8.9 kpc from the Sun. In the background of the cluster, at more than 9 kpc, we detect a young population most probably associated to the Norma Cygnus spiral arm. Furthermore, we detect the signature of an older population and identify its Turn Off and Red Giant Branch. This population is found to have a mean age of 7 Gyrs and a mea…
We present the kinematics of a sample of 398 DA white dwarfs from the SPY project (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY) and discuss kinematic criteria for distinguishing thin-disk, thick-disk, and halo populations. This is the largest homogeneous sample of white dwarfs for which 3D space motions have been determined. Since the percentage of old stars among white dwarfs is higher than among main-sequence stars, they are presumably valuable tools in studies of old populations, such as the halo and the thick disk. Radial velocities and spectroscopic distances were combined with our measurements of proper…
We present new nearby stars extracted from a proper motion catalogue and having a DENIS counterpart. Their distances and spectral type are estimated using the DENIS colours. 107 stars are within 50 pc. 31 stars among them have previously measured distances. In addition, 40 stars may enter within the 50 pc limit depending on which population they belong to. 6 stars among them have already measured distances. 5 objects, LHS5045, LP225-57, LP831-45, LHS1767, and WT792, are probably closer than 15 pc, with LP225-57 at 9.5 pc. Most of these stars are M-type while 4 stars are white dwarfs. 88 M-dwar…
Using a sample of 248 metal-poor stars (RR Lyraes, red giants and RHB stars) which is remarkable for the accuracy of its 6-D kinematical data, we find a new component for the local halo which has an axial ratio c/a ~ 0.2, a similar flattening to the thick disk. It has a small prograde rotation but is supported by velocity anisotropy, and contains more intermediate-metallicity stars (with -1.5 < [Fe/H] < -1.0) than the rest of our sample. We suggest that this component was formed quite late, during or after the formation of the disk. It formed either from the gas that was accreted by the last m…
Inspecting all 1224 edge-on disk galaxies larger than 2' in the RC3 on DSS images we have found several galaxies with extraordinary bulges meeting two criteria: They are box shaped and large in respect to the diameters of their galaxies. These bulges are often disturbed, show frequently prominent irregularities and asymmetries, and some possess possible merger remnants or merging satellites. For these bulges we have introduced the term "Thick Boxy Bulges" (TBBs). About 2% of all disk galaxies (S0-Sd), respectively 4% of all galaxies with box- and peanut-shaped (b/p) bulges, belong to this clas…
The results of a kinematical population classification of 497 Hipparcos orbital binaries are discussed. Less than 10% of the stars from the sample belong to the thick disk. Only seven stars have halo kinematics. There are no direct dynamical mass determinations for extreme halo stars. Some suggestions, concerning Population II visual binaries for which ground-based astrometric observations in combination with GAIA data will be useful in the future for the better determination of orbits for long period Population II binaries, are offered.
We analyse the kinematics of the entire spectroscopic sample of 99 recently discovered high proper-motion white dwarfs by Oppenheimer et al. using a maximum-likelihood analysis, and discuss the claim that the high-velocity white dwarfs are members of a halo population with a local density at least ten times greater than traditionally assumed. We argue that the observations, as reported, are consistent with the presence of an almost undetected thin disc plus a thick disc, with densities as conventionally assumed. In addition, there is a kinematically distinct, flattened, halo population at the …
We have performed the detailed analysis of 174 high-resolution spectra of FGK dwarfs obtained with the ELODIE echelle spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. Abundances of Fe, Si and Ni have been determined from equivalent widths under LTE approximation, whereas abundances of Mg have been determined under NLTE approximation using equivalent widths of 4 lines and profiles of 5 lines. Spatial velocities with an accuracy better than 1 km/s, as well as orbits, have been computed for all stars. They have been used to define 2 subsamples kinematically representative of the thin disk and …
We study the metal abundances of F and G type stars in the Galactic disk and halo using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey D4 field. For a sample of stars within 7 kpc of the Galactic plane, we derive mean abundance values of Fe/H=-0.77(+/-0.36) dex for the thick disk, and Fe/H=-1.42(+/-0.98) dex for the stellar halo, respectively. These metallicites are consistent with the metallicity estimates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6. We do not find a vertical abundance gradient for the thick disk between 1 kpc and 4 kpc. However, stars within 1 kpc of the Galactic plan…
We present a progress report on the kinematical analysis of the entire SPY (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY) sample of about one thousand white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs. In a previous study (Pauli et al. 2003, 2006) 398 DA white dwarfs have been analysed already. Here we extend the study to 634 DA white dwarfs. We discuss kinematic criteria for a distinction of thin disk, thick disk and halo populations. This is the largest homogeneous sample of white dwarfs for which accurate 3D space motions have been determined. They have been derived from radial velocities, spectroscopic distances and proper m…
We present the three-dimensional orbital motions of metal-poor stars in conjunction with their metal abundances, for the purpose of getting insight into the formation process of the Galaxy. Our sample stars, which include metal-deficient red giants and RR Lyrae variables observed by the Hipparcos satellite, are least affected by known systematics, stemmed from kinematic bias, metallicity calibration, and secondary metal contamination of stellar surface. We find, for the stars in the metallicity range of [Fe/H]<-1, that there is no evidence for the correlation between [Fe/H] and their orbital e…
We use data from the Northern Sky Variability Survey (NSVS), obtained from the first generation Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE-I), to identify and study RR Lyrae variable stars in the solar neighborhood. We initially identified 1197 RRab (RR0) candidate stars brighter than the ROTSE median magnitude V = 14. Periods, amplitudes, and mean V magnitudes are determined for a subset of 1188 RRab stars with well defined light curves. Metallicities are determined for 589 stars by the Fourier parameter method and by the relationship between period, amplitude, and [Fe/H]. We comment …
