We study the metal abundances of F and G type stars in the Galactic disk and halo using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey D4 field. For a sample of stars within 7 kpc of the Galactic plane, we derive mean abundance values of Fe/H=-0.77(+/-0.36) dex for the thick disk, and Fe/H=-1.42(+/-0.98) dex for the stellar halo, respectively. These metallicites are consistent with the metallicity estimates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6. We do not find a vertical abundance gradient for the thick disk between 1 kpc and 4 kpc. However, stars within 1 kpc of the Galactic plane are saturated in our dataset, and therefore we cannot rule out the observed vertical metallicity gradient for the thick disk stars in the SDSS. Moreover, we find a negative trend in the halo metallicity with increasing distance from the Galactic plane. This trend could be due to a contribution from an increasing number of very metal poor stars that belong to the outer halo. However, systematic effects in photometric metallicities are largest for the most metal poor stars, and therefore these effects cannot be ruled out.
AIMS: We present data from the CFHTLS Strong Lensing Legacy Survey (SL2S). Due to the unsurpassed combined depth, area and image quality of the Canada-France-Hawaii Legacy Survey it is becoming possible to uncover a large, statistically well-defined sample of strong gravitational lenses which spans the dark halo mass spectrum predicted by the concordance model from galaxy to cluster haloes. METHODS: We describe the development of several automated procedures to find strong lenses of various mass regimes in CFHTLS images. RESULTS: The preliminary sample of about 40 strong lensing candidates dis…
We study the relationships between galaxy total luminosity (M_g), morphology, color and environment as a function of redshift. We use a magnitude-limited sample of 65,624 galaxies in the redshift range 0<z<1.3 taken from one of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey Deep Fields. We parametrize galaxy morphology according to the Sersic index n. Our n>2 number fractions at z=0.1 agree well with those based on SDSS galaxies. We find that the n>2 galaxy number fraction is constant with redshift in the field. However, for overdense environments this fraction is larger and increases toward…
The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) has created a large homogeneous database of intermediate redshift (0.2 < z < 1.0) type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The SNLS team has shown that correlations exist between SN Ia rates, properties, and host galaxy star formation rates. The SNLS SN Ia database has now been combined with a photometric redshift galaxy catalog and an optical galaxy cluster catalog to investigate the possible influence of galaxy clustering on the SN Ia rate, over and above the expected effect due to the dependence of SFR on clustering through the morpholog…
Type Ia supernovae provide direct evidence for an accelerating universe, and for the existence of "dark energy" driving this expansion. The Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) will deliver many hundreds of SNIa detections, and well-sampled g'r'i'z' light curves, over the next 5 years. Using these data, we will obtain a precise measurement of the cosmological parameters (Omega_mass, Omega_Lambda); our goal is to determine the cosmological equation of state parameter w to a precision better than +-0.10, and hence test theories for the origin of the universal acceleration. SNLS uses the CFHT MegaCam i…
We present photometric redshifts for an uniquely large and deep sample of 522286 objects with i'_{AB}<25 in the Canada-France Legacy Survey ``Deep Survey'' fields, which cover a total effective area of 3.2 deg^2. We use 3241 spectroscopic redshifts with 0<z<5 from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey as a calibration to derive these photometric redshifts. We devise a robust calibration method which removes systematic trends in the photometric redshifts and significantly reduces the fraction of catastrophic errors. We use our unique spectroscopic sample to present a detailed assessment of the robustness o…
We attempt to detect optical GRB afterglows on images taken by the Canada France Hawaii Telescope for the Very Wide survey, component of the Legacy Survey. To do so, a Real Time Analysis System called "Optically Selected GRB Afterglows" has been installed on a dedicated computer in Hawaii. This pipeline automatically and quickly analyzes Megacam images and extracts from them a list of variable objects which is displayed on a web page for validation by a member of the collaboration. The Very Wide survey covers 1200 square degrees down to i'=23.5. This paper briefly explain the RTAS process.
The formation and growth of galaxy disks over cosmic time is crucial to our understanding of galaxy formation. Despite steady improvements in the size and quality of disk samples over the last decade, many aspects of galaxy disk evolution remain unclear. Using two square degrees of deep, wide-field i'-band imaging from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey, we compute size functions for 6000 disks from z=0.2 to z=1 and explore luminosity and number density evolution scenarios with an emphasis on the importance of selection effects on the interpretation of the data. We also compute t…
We present the first measurements of the weak gravitational lensing signal induced by the large scale mass distribution from data obtained as part of the ongoing Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). The data used in this analysis are from the Wide Synoptic Survey, which aims to image ~170 square degree in five filters. We have analysed ~22 deg2 (31 pointings) of i' data spread over two of the three survey fields. These data are of excellent quality and the results bode well for the remainder of the survey: we do not detect a significant `B'-mode, suggesting that residual syst…
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) currently provide the most direct evidence for an accelerating Universe and for the existence of an unknown "dark energy" driving this expansion. The 5-year Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS; http://cfht.hawaii.edu/SNLS/) will deliver ~1000 SN Ia detections with well-sampled g'r'i'z' light curves. Using this definitive dataset, we will obtain a precise measurement of the cosmological parameters (Omega_m, Omega_lambda); our goal is to determine the cosmological equation of state parameter "w" to a statistical precision of +/-0.07, testing theories for the origin of the u…
The 5-year project Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) delivers $\sim 100$ Type-Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) per year, in the redshift range $0.3 < z < 1.0$, with well-sampled $g'r'i'z'$ lightcurves. The SNLS Collaboration uses the 1 deg$^2$ Megacam imager (36 $2048 \times 4612$ thinned CCDs) mounted on the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) to observe four fields around the sky, in four filters. The primary goal of the project is to measure the dark energy equation of state with a final statistical precision of $\pm 0.05$. We have shown, using the first year dataset that the calibration uncerta…
AIMS: We present a weak lensing search of galaxy clusters in the 4 deg2 of the CFHT Legacy Survey Deep. This work aims at building a mass-selected sample of clusters. METHODS: We use the deep i' band images to perform weak lensing mass reconstructions and to identify high convergence peaks. Thanks to the availability of deep ugriz exposures, sources are selected from their photometric redshifts. We also use lensing tomography to derive an estimate of the lens redshift. After considering the raw statistics of peaks we check whether they can be associated to a clear optical counterpart or to pub…
We apply a matched-filter cluster detection algorithm to the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) i-band data for the Deep-1, Deep-2, Deep-3 and Deep-4 fields covering a total of 4square degrees. To test the implemented procedure we carry out simulations for assessing the frequency of noise peaks as well as estimate the recovery efficiency. We estimate that up to z~0.7 the catalogue is essentially complete for clusters of richness class R>~1. The recovered redshifts are in general overestimated by dz=0.1 with a scatter of sigma_dz~0.1, except at redshifts z>~1 where the estima…
We present a stellar populations analysis of the first release of the CFHTLS (Canada-France-Hawai Telescope Legacy Survey) data. A detailed comparison between the Besançon model of the Galaxy and the first data release of the CFHTLS-Deep survey is performed by implementing the MEGACAM photometric system in this model using stellar atmosphere model libraries. The reliability of the theoretical libraries to reproduce the observed colours in the MEGACAM system is investigated. The locations of various stellar species like subdwarfs, white dwarfs, late-type and brown dwarfs, binary systems are ide…
We compute photometric redshifts based on the template-fitting method in the fourth public release of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. This unique multi-colour catalogue comprises u*,g',r',i',z' photometry in four deep fields of 1 deg2 each and 35 deg2 distributed over three Wide fields. Our photometric redshifts are calibrated with and compared to 16,983 high-quality spectroscopic redshifts from several surveys. We find a dispersion of 0.028 and an outlier rate of 3.5% in the Deep field at i'AB < 24 and a dispersion of 0.036 and an outlier rate of 2.8% in the Wide field at i'…
We present distance measurements to 71 high redshift type Ia supernovae discovered during the first year of the 5-year Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). These events were detected and their multi-color light-curves measured using the MegaPrime/MegaCam instrument at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), by repeatedly imaging four one-square degree fields in four bands. Follow-up spectroscopy was performed at the VLT, Gemini and Keck telescopes to confirm the nature of the supernovae and to measure their redshift. With this data set, we have built a Hubble diagram extending to z=1, with all d…
We compare the rise times of nearby and distant Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as a test for evolution using 73 high-redshift spectroscopically-confirmed SNe Ia from the first two years of the five year Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) and published observations of nearby SN. Because of the ``rolling'' search nature of the SNLS, our measurement is approximately 6 times more precise than previous studies, allowing for a more sensitive test of evolution between nearby and distant supernovae. Adopting a simple $t^2$ early-time model (as in previous studies), we find that the rest-frame $B$ rise times …
We present the first cosmic shear measurements obtained from the T0001 release of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. The data set covers three uncorrelated patches (D1, D3 and D4) of one square degree each observed in u*, g', r', i' and z' bands, out to i'=25.5. The depth and the multicolored observations done in deep fields enable several data quality controls. The lensing signal is detected in both r' and i' bands and shows similar amplitude and slope in both filters. B-modes are found to be statistically zero at all scales. Using multi-color information, we derived a photomet…
This paper presents and gives the COP (COP: CFHT Optical PDCS; CFHT: Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope; PDCS: Palomar Distant Cluster Survey) survey data. We describe our photometric and spectroscopic observations with the MOS multi-slit spectrograph at the CFH telescope. A comparison of the photometry from the PDCS (Postman et al. 1996) catalogs and from the new images we have obtained at the CFH telescope shows that the different magnitude systems can be cross-calibrated. After identification between the PDCS catalogues and our new images, we built catalogues with redshift, coordinates and V, I…
The NSF Science and Technology Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO) is supporting a major scientific legacy project called the CfAO Treasury Survey (CATS). CATS is obtaining near-infrared AO data in deep HST survey fields, such as GEMS, GOODS-N, & EGS. Besides summarizing the main objectives of CATS, we highlight some recent imaging work on the study of distant field galaxies, AGNs, and a redshift z = 1.32 supernova. CATS plans the first data release to the community in early 2007 (check http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~irlab/cats/index.shtml for more details on CATS and latest updates).
The Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS; http://cfht.hawaii.edu/SNLS) will discover and obtain g'r'i'z' lightcurves for more than 700 spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia (0.3<z<0.9) to differentiate between competing models for Dark Energy. We fit the multicolor lightcurves of the candidates to determine which are likely SNe Ia and send them for follow-up spectroscopy to the Keck, VLT, and Gemini telescopes. Here we show the results from Gemini, where we send most of our highest redshift (0.6<z<0.9) targets.
We describe the first results from a comprehensive study of the distant cluster Cl0024+1654 (z=0.39) based upon a pattern of 38 mosaiced HST-WFPC2 images extending to radii ~5Mpc. These are being analysed in conjunction with extensive spectroscopy conducted with the CFHT, WHT, and Keck Telescopes. The overall goal is to understand the morphological transformations and associated short-term star formation histories of representative numbers of infalling field galaxies in the context of the cluster potential as defined by weak lensing studies. Our HST database contains over 2000 galaxy morpholog…
We present the first dynamical study of the optically selected Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (PDCS). We show that eleven out of twelve PDCS clusters we observed are real over-densities of galaxies. Most clusters have velocity dispersions appropriate for clusters of galaxies. However, we find a fraction (1/3) of objects in the PDCS which have velocity dispersions in the range of groups of galaxies (200 +/- 100 km/s) but have richnesses appropriate for clusters of galaxies. We measure the richness function, X-ray luminosity function (using both the detections and upper limits), and the mass fun…
We report the discovery of a ~500 kpc HI extension southwest of the Virgo Cluster HI-rich pair NGC 4532/DDO 137, detected as part of the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) Survey. The feature is the longest and most massive HI tail structure so far found in the Virgo Cluster and, at 1.8 Mpc from M87, the most distant from the main concentration of the intracluster medium. The structure is spatially and spectrally separated into two ridges and is defined by diffuse emission and discrete clumps of mass 2.5 - 6.8 x 10**7 solar masses. All emission is blue-shifted with respect to the NGC 4532/DDO …
We propose a near-infrared microlensing survey of the central 2 degree field of the Galactic Center, in an attempt to estimate the surface density and mass distribution of distant free-floating brown dwarfs in the bulge and in the disk, acting as lenses of bright stars towards the Galactic Center. We estimate the probability (optical depth) of microlensing events to be 10^{-7} and the typical timescale (full-width) of the amplification lightcurve to be about 1 week. The necessary wide-field NIR survey technology should soon be available on UKIRT, CFHT, and with VISTA at ESO/Paranal.
Weak lensing measurements are starting to provide statistical maps of the distribution of matter in the universe that are increasingly precise and complementary to cosmic microwave background maps. The probability distribution (PDF) provides a powerful tool to test non-Gausian features in the convergence field and to discriminate the different cosmological models. In this letter, we present a new PDF space Wiener filter approach to reconstruct the probability density function of the convergence from the noisy convergence field. We find that for parameters comparable to the CFHT legacy survey, …
New surveys with the Spitzer space telescope identify distant star-forming and active galaxies by their strong emission at far-infrared wavelengths, which provides strong constraints on these galaxies' bolometric energy. Using early results from Spitzer surveys at 24 micron, we argue that the faint sources correspond to the existence of a population of infrared-luminous galaxies at z > 1 that are not expected from predictions based on previous observations from ISO and IRAS. Combining Spitzer images with deep ground-based optical and Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we discuss the properties of…
We present a measurement of the distant Type Ia supernova rate derived from the first two years of the Canada -- France -- Hawaii Telescope Supernova Legacy Survey. We observed four one-square degree fields with a typical temporal frequency of <Delta t> ~ 4 observer-frame days over time spans of from 158 to 211 days per season for each field, with breaks during full moon. We used 8-10 meter-class telescopes for spectroscopic followup to confirm our candidates and determine their redshifts. Our starting sample consists of 73 spectroscopically verified Type Ia supernovae in the redshift range 0.…
In this paper, we present an analysis of the dynamics and segregation of galaxies in rich clusters from z~0.32 to z~0.48 taken from the CFHT Optical PDCS (COP) survey and from the CNOC survey (Carlberg et al. 1997). Our results from the COP survey are based upon the recent observational work of Adami et al. (2000) and Holden et al. (2000) and use new spectroscopic and photometric data on six clusters selected from the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (PDCS; Postman et al. 1996). We have compared the COP and CNOC samples to the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS: z~0.07). Our sample shows tha…
We construct rest-frame luminosity functions at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8 and 24 microns over the redshift range 0<z<2 for galaxies and 0<z<4 for optical QSOs, using optical and infrared data from the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey. The 3.6 and 4.5 micron galaxy LFs show evidence for moderate positive luminosity evolution up to z~1.5, consistent with the passive ageing of evolved stellar populations. Their comoving luminosity density was found to evolve passively, gradually increasing out to z~0.5-1 but flattening, or even declining, at higher redshift. Conversely, the 24 micron galaxy…
We present the first color-magnitude study for Palomar 2, a distant and heavily obscured globular cluster near the Galactic anticenter. Our (V,V-I) color-magnitude diagram (CMD), obtained with the UH8K camera at the CFHT, reaches V(lim) = 24 and clearly shows the principal sequences of the cluster, though with substantial overall foreground absorption and differential reddening. The CMD morphology shows a well populated red horizontal branch with a sparser extension to the blue, similar to clusters such as NGC 1261, 1851, or 6229 with metallicities near [Fe/H] = -1.3$. From an average of sever…
We use the halo model of clustering to compute two- and three-point correlation functions for weak lensing, and apply them in a new statistical technique to measure properties of massive halos. We present analytical results on the eight shear three-point correlation functions constructed using combination of the two shear components at each vertex of a triangle. We compare the amplitude and configuration dependence of the functions with ray-tracing simulations and find excellent agreement for different scales and models. These results are promising, since shear statistics are easier to measure…
The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) is designed to gather the best and deepest multiwavelength data for studying the formation and evolution of galaxies and active galactic nuclei, the distribution of dark and luminous matter at high redshift, the cosmological parameters from distant supernovae, and the extragalactic background light. The program uses the most powerful space- and ground-based telescopes to cover two fields, each 10'x16', centered on the Hubble Deep Field North and the Chandra Deep Field South, already the sites of extensive observations from X-ray through radio…
