The problem of pattern formation in resonantly-enhanced near-field lithography by the use of dielectric or plasmonic planar resonators is investigated. Sub-diffraction-limited bright or dark spots can be produced by taking advantage of the rotational invariance of planar resonators. To increase the spatial bandwidth of the resonant enhancement, an array of coupled planar resonators can open up a band of Bloch resonances, analogous to coupled-resonator optical waveguides.
Plane-parallel resonator configuration is proposed for high-NA EUV lithography, where the lithography mask and the wafer are parallelly arranged through two focusing mirrors. EUV light is injected through an off-axis rotating mirror at the back focal plane and provides off-axis illumination (precession beam) to the mask and bounces back twice (at the mask and the wafer), finally goes out from the resonator through the rotating mirror. This is a single path cavity, there is no resonant effect. The orbital error or vibration of the rotating mirror do not affect on the imaging quality. The off-ax…
The random laser emission from the functionalized thienyl-S,S-dioxide quinquethiophene (T5OCx) in confined patterns with different shapes is demonstrated. Functional patterning of the light emitter organic material in well defined features is obtained by spontaneous molecular self-assembly guided by surface tension driven (STD) lithography. Such controlled supramolecular nano-aggregates act as scattering centers allowing the fabrication of one-component organic lasers with no external resonator and with desired shape and efficiency. Atomic force microscopy shows that different geometric patter…
In this work, we focus on stub resonators embedded in plasmonic slot waveguides. The resonators have potential applications in optical interconnects and sensors. We fabricate the samples by electron beam lithography and lift-off. We use a scattering matrix based model to quantify the optical power output from the samples. We measure the properties of the resonators by coupling light in and out of the slot waveguides by optical antennas, making use of a cross-polarization based setup utilizing a supercontinuum source and a high numerical aperture objective lens operating in the telecom-waveleng…
In this report, the optomechanical transductions in both single and two side-coupled wheel resonators are investigated. In the single resonator, the optomechanical transduction sensitivity is determined by the optical and mechanical quality factors of the resonator. In the coupled resonators, the optomechanical transduction is related to the energy distribution in the two resonators, which is strongly dependent on the input detuning. Compared to a single resonator, the coupled resonators can still provide very sensitive optomechanical transduction even if the optical and mechanical quality fac…
We study the differential group delay that can be obtained in coupled micro-ring resonator waveguides with longitudinal offset couplers. Various devices based on this effect are proposed and analyzed using a finite-differences time-domain method and their potential applications are discussed.
We study the effect of rotation on the propagation of electromagnetic waves in slow-light waveguide structures consisting of coupled micro-ring resonators. We show that such configurations exhibit new a type of the Sagnac effect which can be used for the realization of highly-compact integrated rotation sensors and gyroscopes.
Metallic split-ring resonators possess dominant electric dipoles as well as considerable magnetic dipoles under proper excitations. Full-wave numerical approaches are frequently employed to simulate adjacent split-ring resonators, but simulations cannot explain the underlying physics. An analytical theory based on a dynamic electric dipole approximation is developed here. Detailed theory-simulation comparisons demonstrate that this theory can \textit{quantitatively} describe the interaction strength of coupled split-ring-resonators under certain circumstances.
Controlling the spectral response of thermal emitters has become increasingly important for a range of energy and sensing applications. Conventional approaches to achieving arbitrary spectrum selectivity in photonic systems have entailed combining multiple resonantly emissive elements together to achieve a range of spectral profiles through numerical optimization, with a universal theoretical framework lacking. Here, we develop a temporal coupled mode theory for thermal emission from multiple, arbtirarily-coupled resonators. We validate our theory against numerical simulations of complex two- …
We theoretically and experimentally study the effect of the coupled-resonator-induced transparency in the Michelson interferometer with the dual-recycled configuration, which is equivalent to the adjustable coupled resonator. The coupling strength, corresponding to the splitting of the reflection spectrum and associated with the width of the coupled-resonator-induced transparent window, can be controlled by adjusting the arm lengths, i.e., the relative phase of the interference arms on the 50/50 beam splitter. Thus, this tunability of the coupling strength can be very fast, and the absorptive a…
We introduce the concept of controlling the nonlinear response of the metamaterial by altering its internal structure. We experimentally demonstrate tuning of the nonlinear response of two coupled split-ring resonators by changing their mutual position. This effect is achieved through modification of the structure of the coupled resonant modes, and their interaction with the incident field. By offsetting the resonators we control the maximum currents through the nonlinear driving elements, which affects the nonlinear response of the system.
Using in-resonator photoconductive heaters to both sense and control the intra-cavity light intensity of microring resonators, automatic tuning of a silicon-on-insulator two-ring Vernier filter is demonstrated across the entire C-band.
We demonstrate scattering control of Gaussian-like wave packets propagating with constant envelope velocity and invariant waist through coupled resonator optical waveguides (CROW) via an external resonator coupled to multiple sites of the CROW. We calculate the analytical reflectance and transmittance using standard scattering methods from waveguide quantum electrodynamics and show it is possible to approximate them for an external resonator detuned to the CROW. Our analytical and approximate results are in good agreement with numerical simulations. We engineer various configurations using an …
Nonlinear resonant structures consisting of coupled ring resonators can be modeled by difference-differential equations that take into account non-instantaneous Kerr response and the effect of loss. We present a simple and efficient numerical formalism for solution of the system and calculation of the time evolution. The technique is demonstrated by investigating the dynamical behavior of the coupled structure with two rings, namely, focusing on self-pulsing solutions. The influence of both, loss and non-instantaneous Kerr response, is also presented.
Ab initio approach is used to describe the time evolution of the amplitudes of whispering gallery modes in a system of coupled microdisk resonators with Kerr nonlinearity. It is shown that this system demonstrates a transition between Josephson-like nonlinear oscillations and self-trapping behavior. Manifestation of this transition in the dynamics of radiative losses is studied.
We study the resonant transmission of light in a coupled-resonator optical waveguide interacting with two nearly identical side cavities. We reveal and describe a novel effect of the coupled-resonator-induced reflection (CRIR) characterized by a very high and easily tunable quality factor of the reflection line, for the case of the inter-site coupling between the cavities and the waveguide. This effect differs sharply from the coupled-resonator-induced transparency (CRIT) -- an all-optical analogue of the electromagnetically-induced transparency -- which has recently been studied theoretically…
We report on the realization and optical characterization of a CMOS-compatible silicon-based microresonator/waveguide coupled system, fully integrated on a silicon chip. The device uses a vertical coupling scheme between the resonator and a buried strip waveguide. We demonstrate that its high optical quality follows from the accurate planarization of the waveguide topography. More importantly, we demonstrate a wafer-scale mass fabrication of freestanding planar resonators suspended in air and coupled to the integrated bus waveguides. A nanometer control of the coupling distances allows for a p…
We describe a method that enables free-standing whispering-gallery-mode microresonators, and report spectral tuning of photonic molecules formed by coupled free and on-chip resonators with different geometries and materials. We study direct coupling via evanescent fields of free silica microtoroids and microspheres with on-chip polymer coated silica microtoroids. We demonstrate thermal tuning of resonance modes to achieve maximal spectral overlap, mode splitting induced by direct coupling, and the effects of distance between the resonators on the splitting spectra.
We show that the implementation of the longitudinal displacement technique for adjusting the coupling coefficients in microring waveguides is subject to a phase asymmetry effect. This issue is shown to substantially alter the system response in apodized filters and cannot be ignored in the design stage.
Fast and highly accurate method based on the Muller contour integral equations and a trigonometric-trigonometric Galerkin discretization technique is presented for spectral design and fine-tuning of clusters of whispering-gallery (WG) mode microdisk resonators and photonic crystal (PC) defect cavities. It is shown that degeneracy and near-degeneracy of natural modes as well as modes optical confinement in coupled resonator clusters are significantly influenced by the symmetry of the structure. Photonic molecules with greatly enhanced quality factors are designed by exploiting the symmetry of t…
A double-layer Kerr resonator in which both coupled modes are excited and interact with each other via incoherent cross-phase modulation is investigated to reveal stable localized solutions beyond the usual formation mechanism involving a single mode. Periodic solutions from modulational instability are found to occur at a slight penalty on the nonlinear efficiency, but they stabilize the spatial dynamics, leading to dissipative solitons in previously unattainable regimes. Numerical simulations show paired breather solitons in addition to temporally stable solutions. The results demonstrate co…
We study the dispersion relations in slow-light waveguide structures consisting of coupled microdisk resonators. A group theoretical analysis of the symmetry properties of the propagating modes reveals an interesting phenomenon: The degeneracy of the CW and CCW rotating modes is removed, giving rise to two distinct transmission bands. This effect induces symmetry-based dispersion which may limit usable bandwidth of such structures. The properties of this band splitting and its impact on CROW performance for optical communications are studied in detail.
We report on the efficient design and fabrication of polymeric microracetrack optical resonators for label-free biosensing purposes. Vertically-coupled microresonators immersed in deionised water display high Q-factors (>35000) and finesses up to 25. A surface sensing experiment performed with these microresonators using 5-TAMRA cadaverine as a test molecule demonstrated both the high sensitivity and low detection limit of our device.
We study the dynamics of a pair of nonlinear split-ring resonators (a `metadimer') excited by an alternating magnetic field and coupled magnetically. Linear metadimers of this kind have been recently used as the elementary components for three-dimensional metamaterials or 'stereometamaterials' [N. Liu {\em et al}, Nature Photon. {\bf 3}, 157 (2009)]. We demonstrate that nonlinearity offers more possibilities with respect to real-time tunability and a multiplicity of states which can be reached by varying the external field. Moreover, we demonstrate almost total localization of the energy in on…
Coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs), which play a significant role in modern photonics, achieve waveguiding through near-field coupling between tightly localized resonators. The coupling factor, a critical parameter in CROW theory, determines the coupling strength between two resonators and the waveguiding dispersion of a CROW. However, the original CROW theory proposed by Yariv et al. only demonstrated one value of coupling factor for a multipole resonance mode. Here, by imaging the tight-binding Bloch waves on a CROW consisting of designer-surface-plasmon resonators in the microwave…
We study the transmission of light through a system consisting of an arbitrary number $N$ of microtoroidal resonators coupled to a one-dimensional (1D) waveguide. The transmission $T$ through such a system and its full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) are calculated for various values of $N$ and mutual-mode coupling coefficients. We found that at small mutual-mode coupling, the minimum transmission vanishes exponentially with $N$ while the FWHM is proportional to $\sqrt{N}$. At big mutual-mode coupling, as the number of resonators increases, the mode-splitting is reduced. Our findings contribute t…
Coupled-mode induced transparency is realized in a single microbubble whispering gallery mode resonator. Using aerostatic tuning, we find that the pressure induced shifting rates are different for different radial order modes. A finite element simulation considering both the strain and stress effects shows a GHz/bar difference and this is confirmed by experiments. A transparency spectrum is obtained when a first order mode shifts across a higher order mode through precise pressure tuning. The resulting lineshapes are fitted with the theory. This work lays a foundation for future applications i…
We present a coherent population trapping based scheme to attain sub-nanoscale resolution for atom localization, microscopy and lithography. Our method uses three-level atoms coupled to amplitude modulated probe field and spatially dependent drive field. The modulation of the probe field allows us to tap into the steep dispersion normally associated with electromagnetically induced transparency and offers an avenue to attain sub-nanometer resolution using just optical fields. We illustrate application of the techniques to the area of microscopy and lithography and show how multilevel schemes o…
We present a technique to improve the slow-light performance of a side-coupled spaced sequence of resonators (SCISSOR) combined with a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) gain medium in optical fiber. We evaluate device performance of SCISSOR-only and SCISSOR + SBS systems for different numbers of cascaded resonators from 1 to 70 using two different data fidelity metrics including eye-opening and mutual information. A practical system design is demonstrated by analyzing its performance in terms of fractional delay, power transmission, and data fidelity. We observe that the results from the t…
We studied the transmission characteristics of a planar metamaterial consisting of an array of electric split-ring resonators (eSRRs) with double periodicity. Because of coupling between different resonant modes induced by different lattice periods in metamaterials with double periodicity, the appearance of Fano resonance can be expected in the same manner as that in the case of coupled classical oscillators. We fabricated complementary eSRRs and verified that a Fano-like spectral shape appeared in the transmission spectra of eSRRs with double periodicity in the terahertz region.
We report the first observation of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) with Brillouin lasing, and Brillouin-coupled four-wave-mixing (FWM) in an ultra-high-Q silica microbottle resonator. The Brillouin lasing was observed at the frequency of $Ω_B=2π\times10.4$ GHz with a threshold power of $0.45$ mW. Coupling between Brillouin and FWM was observed in both backward and forward scattering directions with separations of $2Ω_B$. At a pump power of $10$ mW, FWM spacing reached to 7th and 9th order anti-Stokes and Stokes, respectively.
This paper investigates the radiation properties of two coupled split-ring resonators (SRRs). Due to electromagnetic coupling, two hybrid magnetic plasmon modes were induced in the structure. Our calculations show that the radiation loss of the structure was greatly suppressed by the hybridization effect. This led to a remarkable increase in the Q-factor of the coupled system compared to the single SRR. By adjusting the distance between the two SRRs, the Q-factor changed correspondingly due to different electromagnetic coupling strengths. This resulted in a coupled structure that functioned as…
The performance of a coherent perfect absorber (time-reversed laser) is limited by quantum and thermal noise. At zero temperature, the quantum shot noise dominates the signal for frequencies close to the resonance frequency, and both vanish exactly at the resonance frequency. We compute the sensitivity of the absorbing cavity as a background-free detector, limited by finite signal or detector bandwidth.
Optical resonators are important devices that control the properties of light and manipulate light-matter interaction. Various optical resonators are designed and fabricated using different techniques. For example, in coupled resonator optical waveguides, light energy is transported to other resonators through near-field coupling. In recent years, magnetic optical resonators based on LC resonance have been realized in several metallic microstructures. Such devices possess stronger local resonance and lower radiation loss compared with electric optical resonators. This study provides an overall…
We describe the formation of bulk and edge arcs in the dispersion relation of two-dimensional coupled-resonator arrays that are topologically trivial in the hermitian limit. Each resonator provides two asymmetrically coupled internal modes, as realized in noncircular open geometries, which enables the system to exhibit non-hermitian physics. Neighboring resonators are coupled chirally to induce non-hermitian symmetries. The bulk dispersion displays Fermi arcs connecting spectral singularities known as exceptional points, and can be tuned to display purely real and imaginary branches. At an int…
We examine the role of magnetic dipoles in single and coupled pairs of metallic split-ring resonators by numerically computing their magnitude and examining their relative contributions to the scattering cross section. We demonstrate that magnetic dipoles can strongly influence the scattering cross section along particular directions. It is also found that the magnetic dipole parallel to the incident magnetic field and/or high-order multipoles may play a significant role in the linear response of coupled split-ring resonators.
We suggest a method for trapping photons in quasi one-dimensional waveguide or coupled-resonator lattices, which is based on an optical analogue of the Aharonov-Bohm cages for charged particles. Light trapping results from a destructive interference of Aharonov-Bohm type induced by a synthetic magnetic field, which is realized by periodic modulation of the waveguide/resonator propagation constants/resonances.
We investigate collective nonlinear dynamics in a blue-detuned optomechanical cavity that is mechanically coupled to an undriven mechanical resonator. By controlling the strength of the driving field, we engineer a mechanical gain that balances the losses of the undriven resonator. This gain-loss balance corresponds to the threshold where both coupled mechanical resonators enter simultaneously into self-sustained limit cycle oscillations regime. Rich sets of collective dynamics such as in-phase and out-of-phase synchronizations therefore emerge, depending on the mechanical coupling rate, the o…
We encapsulated a high-quality (Q) factor optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microtoroid resonator together with its side coupled fiber taper inside a low refractive index polymer, achieving a final Q higher than 10^7. Packaging provides stable resonator-fiber taper coupling, long-term maintenance of high-Q, a protective layer against contaminants, and portability to microtoroid resonator based devices. We tested the robustness of the packaged device under various conditions and demonstrated its capability for thermal sensing.
Evanescent coupling between a silica optical microbottle resonator and a GaAs electromechanical resonator is demonstrated. This coupling provides high optical sensitivity and efficient piezoelectric controllability of mechanical motion. Opto-electro-mechanical feedback control based on optomechanical detection and electromechanical control is performed in both heating and cooling regimes at room temperature. This feedback scheme can be extended to the efficient control of thermal mechanical motion in electromechanical resonators with arbitrary structures and materials.
We propose and analyze an on-chip all-optical dynamical tuning scheme for coupled nonlinear resonators employing a single control beam injected in parallel with a signal beam. We show that nonlinear Kerr response can be used to dynamically switch the spectral properties between "dark-state" and electromagnetically-induced transparency configurations. Such scheme can be realized in integrated optical applications for pulse trapping and delaying.
A method to realize effective magnetic fields for photons in square lattices of coupled optical waveguides or resonators is suggested, which is inspired by an optical analogue of photon-assisted tunneling of atom optics. It is shown that an artificial magnetic field can be achieved by application of an index gradient and periodic lumped phase shifts or modulation of the propagation constants/resonances, without the need to modulate the coupling strength.
We present a quantized quasinormal approach to rigorously describe coupled lossy resonators, and quantify the quantum coupling parameters as a function of distance between the resonators. We also make a direct connection between classical and quantum quasinormal modes parameters and theories, offering new and unique insights into coupled open cavity resonators. We present detailed calculations for coupled microdisk resonators and show striking interference effects that depend on the phase of the quasinormal modes, an effect that is also significant for high quality factor modes. Our results de…
Defect centers are promising candidates for waveguide-integrated silicon light sources. We demonstrate microresonator- and waveguide-coupled photoluminescence from silicon W~centers. Microphotoluminescence measurements indicate wavelengths on-resonance with resonator modes are preferentially coupled to an adjacent waveguide. Quality factors of at least 5,300 are measured, and free spectral ranges closely match expectation. The W~center phonon sideband can be used as a spectral diagnostic for a broader range waveguide-based devices on cryogenic silicon photonic platforms.
In this work we theoretically investigate a hybrid system of two optomechanically coupled resonators, which exhibits induced transparency. This is realized by coupling an optical ring resonator to a toroid. In the semiclassical analyses, the system displays bistabilities, isolated branches (isolas) and self-sustained oscillation dynamics. Furthermore, we find that the induced transparency transparency window sensitively relies on the mechanical motion. Based on this fact, we show that the described system can be used as a weak force detector and the optimal sensitivity can beat the standard qu…
We demonstrate the generation of quantum-correlated photon pairs from a Si photonic-crystal coupled-resonator optical waveguide. A slow-light supermode realized by the collective resonance of high-Q and small-mode-volume photonic-crystal cavities successfully enhanced the efficiency of the spontaneous four-wave mixing process. The generation rate of photon pairs was improved by two orders of magnitude compared with that of a photonic-crystal line defect waveguide without a slow-light effect.
Near-field phase-shifting contact lithography is modeled to characterize electromagnetic absorption in a photoresist layer with one face in contact with a quartz binary phase-shift mask. The broadband ultraviolet illumination is represented as a frequency-spectrum of normally incident plane waves. A rigorous coupled-wave analysis is carried out to determine the absorption spectrum of the photoresist layer. The specific absorption rate in the photoresist layer is calculated and examined in relation to the geometric parameters. Columnar features in the photoresist layer are of higher quality on …
It is of fundamental interest in controlling the light-matter interaction for a long time in the field of quantum information processing. However, usual excitation with the propagating photon can hardly excite a localized state of light while keeping the atom under a subradiant decay in an atom-waveguide system. Here, we propose a model of coupling between a giant atom and the dynamically-modulated coupled-resonator waveguide and find that a bound state, where the light shows the localization effect and atom exhibits a subradiant decay time, can be excited by a propagating photon. An analytica…
We analyze normal mode splitting in a pair of vertically coupled microdisk resonators. A full vectorial finite element model is used to find the eigen frequencies of the symmetric and antisymmetric composite modes as a function of coupling distance. We find that the coupled microdisks can compete with the best Fabry-Perot resonators in displacement sensing. We also show how we configured FreeFem++ for the sphere eigenvalue problem.
We study nonlinear wave phenomena in coupled ring resonator optical waveguides in the tight coupling regime. A discrete model for the system dynamics is put forward and its steady state nonlinear Bloch modes are derived. The switching behavior of the transmission system is addressed numerically and the results are explained in the light of this analytical result. We also present a numerical study on the spontaneous generation of Bragg solitons from a continuous-wave input.
