Our comprehensive analysis suggests the heating origin of key findings by the authors of the commented letter, hence rendering irrelevant their conclusions.
Recent tunneling observations of a pseudogap in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} are not necessarily evidence that the pseudogap is associated with superconducting fluctuations. The data are here analyzed as a competition between superconductivity and a density wave (taken as a simplified model for a striped phase).
New tunneling data are reported in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-d using superconductor-insulator-superconductor break junctions. Energy gaps, Delta, of 51+2, 54+2 and 57+3 meV are observed for three crystals with Tc=77, 74, and 70 K respectively. These energy gaps are nearly three times larger than for overdoped crystals with similar Tc. Detailed examination of tunneling spectra over a wide doping range from underdoped to overdoped, including the Josephson IcRn product, indicate that these energy gaps are predominantly of superconducting origin.
In a recent paper V.Zavaritsky has argued that interlayer ($c-$ axis) current-voltage characteristics of high temperature superconductors (HTSC) are Ohmic, and has claimed to disprove all findings of intrinsic tunnelling spectroscopy, as well as existence of the interlayer tunnelling and the intrinsic Josephson effect in HTSC, as such. In this comment I demonstrate, that the genuine interlayer current-voltage characteristics are strongly non-Ohmic, which undermines the basic postulate and the logical construction of the criticized paper.
The superconducting compound, LiFeAs, is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap map of the unreconstructed surface indicates a high degree of homogeneity in this system. Spectra at 2 K show two nodeless superconducting gaps with $Δ_1=5.3\pm0.1$ meV and $Δ_2=2.5\pm0.2$ meV. The gaps close as the temperature is increased to the bulk $T_c$ indicating that the surface accurately represents the bulk. A dip-hump structure is observed below $T_c$ with an energy scale consistent with a magnetic resonance recently reported by inelastic neutron scattering.
The asymmetry in the conductance peaks shown in recent PCT and STM measurements may be a signature of the d-wave gap. This is based on our model for the tunneling density of states (DOS) which incorporates the group velocity, tunneling directionality, and a realistic band structure. We also make the comparison with the isotropic s-wave and extended s-wave gap symmetries. Whereas the asymmetry of the conductance peaks for the isotropic s-wave tends to reflect the normal state DOS, the asymmetry for the extended s-wave is opposite to that of the d-wave gap. The model shows that a change in the g…
Tunneling and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements in cuprates are discussed. There is a clear discrepancy among energy-gap values for different 90 K cuprates, inferred from tunneling measurements. By using the phase diagram of hole-doped cuprates we interpret tunneling measurements in 90 K cuprates and INS data in YBCO.
We have synthesized MgB2/Pb planar junctions to study the temperature and field dependence of the superconducting energy gap of MgB2. The major peak occurs at Delta of about 2 meV, and this corresponds to a 2Delta/kBTc value of 1.18. While this is significantly smaller than the BCS weak coupling value, there are features in the tunneling spectra indicating the possibility of another larger gap. By fitting the dI/dV curves with a simple model, the larger gap is estimated to be about 4.5 times the smaller gap. The study of the effect of magnetic field on the junctions shows a stability only up t…
In this Comment, we explain the reason for the discrepancy between two sets of tunneling data obtained on Ni- and Zn-doped Bi2212 single crystals (presented in H. Hancotte et al., Phys. Rev. B 55, R3410 (1997) and A. Mourachkine, to be published in J. of Superconductivity, cond-mat/9902355).
Vortex mass in Fermi superfluids and superconductors and its influence on quantum tunneling of vortices are discussed. The vortex mass is essentially enhanced due to the fermion zero modes in the core of the vortex: the bound states of the Bogoliubov qiasiparticles localized in the core. These bound states form the normal component which is nonzero even in the low temperature limit. In the collisionless regime $ω_0τ\gg 1$, the normal component trapped by the vortex is unbound from the normal component in the bulk superfluid/superconductors and adds to the inertial mass of the moving vortex. In…
Pairing in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors and its origin remain among the most enduring mysteries in condensed matter physics. With cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy/ spectroscopy, we clearly reveal the spatial-dependence or inhomogeneity of the superconducting gap structure of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) along their $c$-axes on a scale shorter than the interlayer spacing. By tunneling into the (100) plane of a Bi2212 single crystal and a YBCO film, we observe both U-shaped tunneling spectra with extended flat zero-conducta…
There is a clear discrepancy among the energy-gap values for different 90 K cuprates, inferred from tunneling measurements. By using the phase diagram for hole-doped cuprates we show that tunneling measurements performed on 90 K cuprates, simply, detect two different energy gaps: the pairing gap and the coherent gap, which are identical in conventional superconductors. We find that there are two reasons why tunneling measurements show in one cuprate exclusively the coherent gap while, in another cuprate, they show the pairing gap: (i) the number of CuO2 planes per unit cell in the cuprate, and…
Expert attention is attracted to the obvious contradiction of the assumption on macroscopic quantum tunnelling and on superposition of two macroscopically distinct quantum states of superconducting loop, considered as flux qubit, with the law of angular momentum conservation and the universally recognized quantum formalism.
We used STM to study the tunneling spectra of FeSe0.3Te0.7 films with two orientations of ab-planes and the connection ramp between them. We have discovered that, using pulse laser deposition (PLD) method, the a- and b-axis of the FeSe0.3Te0.7 film deposited on Ar-ion-milled Magnesium Oxide (MgO) substrate are rotated 45 degree with respect to those of MgO, while the a- and b-axis of the film grown on pristine MgO substrate are parallel to those of MgO. With photolithography and this technique, we can prepare FeSe0.3Te0.7 film with two kinds of orientations on the same MgO substrate, and the c…
To better address the heating issue in stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions, we directly measure temperature of the stack by using a micron-sized thermocouple which is in direct thermal- and electrical contact to the stack, exactly in the place where the bias current is injected. Our measurements have shown that the temperature of the stack can reach 200-300K at the highest bias. Thus, we confirm experimentally that the Joule self-heating is a severe problem in intrinsic-junction-spectroscopy experiments. The pseudogap features reported in our previous paper (A.Yurgens etal, PRL 90, 147005 …

It is argued that the superconducting and pseudogaps represent different coexisting phenomena, and this observation speaks against the precursor-superconductivity scenario of the pseudogap; see, V.M. Krasnov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5860 (2000). We present brief comments showing that the experimental facts of this paper do not contradict to the observations that the pseudogap in underdoped Bi-2212 smoothly evolves into a pseudogap above critical temperature $T_c$, and the large energy gap below $T_c$ is mainly of superconducting origin. We show that appearance of this pseudogap is closely …
In a recent letter [1] Pilgram, Rice and Sigrist (PRS) propose to perform oxygen isotope dependent conductivity measurements along the c-axis of the cuprate superconductor BSSCO. In Raman isotope data for vibrations along the c-axis from 1988 [2], and in site selective susceptibility experiments determining Tc, no isotope effects were observed for oxygen ions in the insulating layer [3]. Based on these earlier not by PRS quoted experiments, we argue that the suggestion made in Ref. 1 is not worth to be undertaken, and if it is carried through, no effect will be seen. From the meanwhile 12 year…
Tunneling spectroscopy of epitaxial (100) oriented \chem{YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}} films was performed using an STM at 4.2 K. On atomically smooth areas, tunneling spectra revealing clear U-shaped gaps with relatively low zero bias conductance were measured. These spectra can be well fitted to the tunneling theory into a d-wave superconductor only when introducing a strong dependence of the tunneling probability on the wave-vector \emph{\textbf{k}}. Possible origins for this \emph{\textbf{k}}-selectivity in STM measurements will be discussed. On other areas, V-shaped gaps as well as zero bias conducta…
Recent tunneling studies in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 suggest that the pseudogap is caused by superconducting fluctuations. By reanalyzing this data, we show that instead there is a second non-superconducting component of the gap which increases strongly with underdoping.
Intrinsic tunneling spectroscopy in high magnetic field ($H$) is used for a direct test of superconducting features in a quasiparticle density of states of high-$T_c$ superconductors. We were able to distinguish with a great clarity two co-existing gaps: (i) the superconducting gap, which closes as $H \to H_{c2}(T)$ and $T\to T_c(H)$, and (ii) the $c$-axis pseudo-gap, which does not change neither with $H$, nor $T$. Strikingly different magnetic field dependencies, together with previously observed different temperature dependencies of the two gaps ~\cite{Krasnov}, speak against the supercondu…
A recent Letter [1] has proposed a device, consisting of an rf SQUID with the junction replaced by a double one, i.e. a Bloch transistor. For symmetric Josephson couplings, and for specific flux bias and gate voltage applied to the transistor's island, the tunneling of encircled flux between its two local potential minima is claimed to be suppressed completely due to destructive interference. This comment purports to show that this claim in general is not valid. Namely, the very Hamiltonian (1) in [1], from which the effect is derived, describes the circuit only under an additional condition. …
We perform scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy study on the layered iron based superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with a critical temperature of about 33.5 K. Two types of terminated surfaces are generally observed after cleaving the samples in vacuum. On one commonly obtained surface, we observe a full gap feature with energy gap values close to 4.6 meV. This type of spectrum shows a clean and uniform full gap in space, which indicates the absence of gap nodes in this superconductor. Quasiparticle interference patterns have also been measured, which show no scattering patterns bet…
The study of the anisotropic superconductor MgB2 using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy reveals two distinct energy gaps at Delta1=2.3 meV and Delta2=7.1 meV. Different spectral weights of the partial superconducting density of states (PDOS) are a reflection of different tunneling directions in this multi-band system. Our experimental observations are consistent with the existence of two-band superconductivity in the presence of interband superconducting pair interaction and quasiparticle scattering. Temperature evolution of the tunneling spectra follows the BCS …
In a recent Physical Review Letter Kortus et al. claim that the observed decrease of $T_c$ in Al and C doped MgB$_2$ samples is mainly due to the band filling by the electron doping but for a fuller understanding of the different behavior of the superconducting energy gaps in Al and C doped samples it is necessary to also include an increased interband scattering for the carbon doped samples. We argue in the following that this latter statement is misleading and is based on the assumption that for carbon doping the two superconducting gaps merge near 10 % carbon doping: an assumption that cont…
We report the demonstration of dc and ac Josephson effects as well as tunneling spectroscopy measurements on Nb/Al2O3/Al/MgB2 thin films heterostructures. Data on dc Josephson effect suggest the presence of two characteristic critical currents possibly accounted for the presence of two gaps in the MgB2 film. Tunneling spectroscopy measurements confirm this two-gap scenario and are explained with the presence of tunneling from both dirty limit and clean limit regions, reflecting two different order parameter amplitudes. The behavior of these two gaps is found in good agreement with the predicti…
A ferroelastic nanoscopic checkerboard pattern of pseudo- and superconductive gaps has been resolved by scanning tunneling microscopy on BSCCO. Using this pattern one can derive [not assume] a macroscopic anisotropic d wave superconductive energy gap that agrees well with angle-resolved photoemission and Fourier transform scanning tunneling microscopy data. The derivation is orbital only [no spins], it explains chemical trends in Raman scattering peak positions and strengths, and it predicts an unexpected reversal of anisotropic Raman gap signatures between BSCCO and LSCO, in good agreement wi…
In 1980 Binnig et al. reported tunneling measurements on Nb-doped SrTiO3, and interpreted their results as indicating two-band superconductivity in the bulk of SrTiO3. However: (1) Effective masses determined from tunneling results in the normal state by Sroubek in 1969 and 1970 are much smaller than those determined by most other methods. The much smaller masses were attributed to properties of a surface layer by the present author in 1971; (2) The only other reports of two-band superconductivity in bulk SrTiO3 can be used to infer much smaller values of band separations than found by Binnig …
We present intrinsic tunneling spectroscopy measurements on small Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ mesas. The tunnel conductance curves show both sharp peaks at the superconducting gap voltage and broad humps representing the $c$-axis pseudo-gap. The superconducting gap vanishes at $T_c$, while the pseudo-gap exists well above $T_c$. Our observation implies that the superconducting and pseudo-gaps represent different coexisting phenomena.

In a recent paper Schechter, Imry and Levinson (cond-mat/9709248) \cite{r1} analysed the density-of-states (DOS) and the conductance of a S/N junction with a barrier. They showed that the DOS in the N conductor near the barrier is strongly affected by the superconductor if the energy $ε$ is small: $l_{n} \sqrt{ε/D}{\ll} Γ{\ll} 1$, where $l_{n}$ is the mean free path, $D$ is the diffusion constant, and $Γ$ is the barrier transmittance. We would like to note that this problem was analysed in several papers with the use of different approaches. In particular, the author has calculated the DOS and…
In a recent publication, Lee $et$ $al.$ discussed experimental observation of Klein tunneling into a proximity-induced topological superconducting state of SmB$_{6}$ through the measurement of Andreev reflection with low-bias conductance doubling across point-contact junctions between sharp Pt-Ir tips and SmB$_{6}$/YB$_{6}$ heterostructures. However, the interpretation of the presented point-contact data is rather ambiguous because observing a low-bias conductance enhancement by a factor of 2 is not special for Klein tunneling into topological superconductors. Such an enhanced conductance can …
Planar tunneling junctions of the presumably unconventional superconductor FeSe were prepared and investigated. The junctions consisted of FeSe/AlOx/Ag multilayers patterned lithographically into mesa structures. Bias voltage dependent differential conductivities dI/dV(V) of junctions in the tunneling, intermediate barrier strength, and metallic regimes were investigated. Depending on the barrier type between two and four features of the conductivity were obtained, which are discussed in the framework of multiple superconducting energy gaps. Specifically we reproduced with all barrier types an…
Low barrier quasiparticle tunneling spectroscopy on Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$ has been studied with PtIr/Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$ point contacts at various temperatures and magnetic fields. No zero-bias conductance peaks are observed. By fitting tunneling conductance to Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory, the temperature dependent s-wave superconducting gaps are obtained. The present results exclude the possibility of d-wave symmetry for the pair gap in Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$, and do not support the conventional phonon mediated pairing in this system either.
We report a scanning tunneling spectroscopy investigation of polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 having a superconducting transition at 52 K. On large regions of the sample surface the tunneling spectra exhibited V-shaped gap structures with no coherence peaks, indicating degraded surface properties. In some regions, however, the coherence peaks were clearly observed, and the V-shaped gaps could be fit to the theory of tunneling into a d-wave superconductor, yielding gap values between 8 to 8.5 meV, corresponding to the ratio 2D/KTc ~ 3.55 - 3.8, which is slightly above the BCS weak-coupling predictio…
We present the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations of an $sπ$ pairing state of two band superconductivity as a model for the FeAs superconductors. The $sπ$ state is an s-wave pairing state with an internal $π$ phase, that is, nodeless gaps on each band but with the opposite sign. The novel features of this state are investigated by calculating the local density of states of the $π$ phase superconductor/normal metal bilayers. Because of the sign reversal between the two condensates, the zero bias conductance peak appears as observed in tunneling spectroscopy experiments on FeAs su…
Point-contact tunneling on CaC$_6$ crystals reproducibly reveals superconducting gaps, $Δ$, of 2.3$\pm$0.2 meV which are $\sim$~40% larger than earlier reports. That puts CaC$_6$ into the class of very strong-coupled superconductors since 2$Δ$/kT$_c\sim$~4.6. Thus soft Ca phonons will be primarily involved in the superconductivity, a conclusion that explains the large Ca isotope effect found recently for CaC$_6$. Consistency among superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN), SIS and Andreev reflection (SN) junctions reinforces the intrinsic nature of this result.
The type I superconductor lead (Pb) has been theoretically predicted to be a two-band superconductor. We use scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) to resolve two superconducting gaps with an energy difference of 150$\,μ$eV. Tunneling into Pb(111), Pb(110) and Pb(100) crystals reveals a strong dependence of the two coherence peak intensities on the crystal orientation. We show that this is the result of a selective tunneling into the two bands at the energy of the two coherence peaks. This is further sustained by the observation of signatures of the Fermi sheets in differential conductance maps…
Using realistic multi-orbital tight-binding Hamiltonians and the T-matrix formalism, we explore the effects of a non-magnetic impurity on the local density of states in Fe-based compounds. We show that scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) has very specific anisotropic signatures that track the evolution of orbital splitting (OS) and antiferromagnetic gaps. Both anisotropies exhibit two patterns that split in energy with decreasing temperature, but for OS these two patterns map onto each other under 90 degree rotation. STS experiments that observe these signatures should expose the underlying …
The nature of the pseudogap state, observed above the superconducting transition temperature TC in many high temperature superconductors, is the center of much debate. Recently, this discussion has focused on the number of energy gaps in these materials. Some experiments indicate a single energy gap, implying that the pseudogap is a precursor state. Others indicate two, suggesting that it is a competing or coexisting phase. Here we report on temperature dependent scanning tunneling spectroscopy of Pb-Bi2Sr2CuO6+x. We have found a new, narrow, homogeneous gap that vanishes near TC, superimposed…
We theoretically study Josephson vortex structures in Josephson junctions which have multiple tunneling channels caused by multiple superconducting gaps. Deriving "coupled sine-Gordon equations" from the free-energy taking account of the multiple tunneling channels, we examine two typical situations, a heterotic junction composed of multigap-superconductor, insulator, and single-gap superconductor, and a grain-boundary junction formed by two identical multigap superconductors. Then, we reveal in both situations that the magnetic field distribution of the Josephson vortex for $\pm s$-wave super…
We have studied the quasiparticle excitation spectrum of the superconductor Ba8Si46 by local tunneling spectroscopy. Using high energy resolution achieved in Superconductor-Superconductor junctions we observed tunneling conductance spectra of a non-conventional shape revealing two distinct energy gaps, DeltaL = 1.3meV and DeltaS = 0.9meV. The analysis of tunneling data evidenced that DeltaL is the principal superconducting gap while DeltaS, smaller and more dispersive, is induced into an intrinsically non-superconducting band of the material by the inter-band quasiparticle scattering.
In our article [1], we found that with increasing dissipation there is a clear, systematic shift and sharpening of the conductance peak along with the disappearance of the higher-bias dip/hump features (DHF), for a stack of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) of intercalated Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi2212). Our work agrees with Zhu et al [2] on unintercalated, pristine Bi2212, as both studies show the same systematic changes with dissipation. The broader peaks found with reduced dissipation [1,2] are consistent with broad peaks in the density-of-states (DOS) found among scanning tunneling spectrosco…
Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy on cleaved BSCCO(2212) single crystals reveal inhomogeneities on length-scales of $\sim$30 $Å$. While most of the surface yields spectra consistent with a d-wave superconductor, small regions show a doubly gapped structure with both gaps lacking coherence peaks and the larger gap having a size typical of the respective pseudo-gap for the same sample.
Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements were carried out on a multi-layered cuprate superconductor Ba$_2$Ca$_5$Cu$_6$O$_{12}$(O$_{1-x}$,F$_x$)$_2$. STM topography revealed random spot structures with the characteristic length $\le 0.5$ nm. The conductance spectra dI/dV(V) show the coexistence of smaller gaps $Δ_S$ and large gaps (pseudogaps) $Δ_L$. The pseudogap-related features in the superconducting state were traced with the spatial resolution of $\sim$ 0.07 nm. Here, $I$ and $V$ are the tunnel current and bias voltage, respectively. The temperature, $T$, dependenc…
We present extensive Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STM/S) measurements at low temperatures in the multiband superconductor MgB$_2$. We find a similar behavior in single crystalline samples and in single grains, which clearly shows the partial superconducting density of states of both the $π$ and $σ$ bands of this material. The superconducting gaps corresponding to both bands are not single valued. Instead, we find a distribution of superconducting gaps centered around 1.9mV and 7.5mV, corresponding respectively to each set of bands. Interband scattering effects, leading to a single gap stru…
We investigate vortices in LiFeAs using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Zero-field tunneling spectra show two superconducting gaps without detectable spectral weight near the Fermi energy, evidencing fully-gapped multi-band superconductivity. We image vortices in a wide field range from 0.1 T to 11 T by mapping the tunneling conductance at the Fermi energy. A quasi-hexagonal vortex lattice at low field contains domain boundaries which consist of alternating vortices with unusual coordination numbers of 5 and 7. With increasing field, the domain boundaries become ill-defined, result…
We report scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements of the gap properties of both ceramic MgB2 and c-axis oriented epitaxial MgB2 thin films. Both show a temperature dependent zero bias conductance peak and evidence for two superconducting gaps. We report tunneling spectroscopy of superconductor-insulator-superconductor (S-I-S) junctions formed in two ways in addition to normal metal-insulator-superconductor (N-I-S) junctions. We find a gap delta=2.3-2.8 meV, with spectral features and temperature dependence that are consistent between S-I-S junction types. In addition, we observe evi…
An analytical result for renormalization of the jump of the heat capacity Delta C/C_N by the anisotropy of the order parameter is derived in the framework of the model proposed by Haas and Maki [Phys. Rev. B 65, 020502(R) (2001)], for both prolate and oblate anisotropy. The graph of Delta C/C_N versus the ratio of the gaps on the equator and the pole, Delta_e/Delta_p, of the Fermi surface allows a direct determination of the gap anisotropy parameter Delta_e/Delta_p using data from specific heat measurements.
Scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2$ (x = 0.06, 0.12) single crystals reveal direct evidence for predominantly two-gap superconductivity. These gaps decrease with increasing temperature and vanish above the superconducting transition $T_c$. The two-gap nature and the slightly doping- and energy-dependent quasiparticle scattering interferences near the wave-vectors $(\pm π, 0)$ and $(0, \pm π)$ are consistent with sign-changing $s$-wave superconductivity. The excess zero-bias conductance and the large gap-to-$T_c$ ratios suggest dominant unitary impurity scatteri…
