Using similarity transformations we construct explicit solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with linear and nonlinear periodic potentials. We present explicit forms of spatially localized and periodic solutions, and study their properties. We put our results in the framework of the exploited perturbation techniques and discuss their implications on the properties of associated linear periodic potentials and on the possibilities of stabilization of gap solitons using polychromatic lattices.
In this paper, we give a proof of the existence of stationary dark soliton solutions or heteroclinic orbits of nonlinear equations of Schrödinger type with periodic inhomogeneous nonlinearity. The result is illustrated with examples of dark solitons for cubic and photorefractive nonlinearities.
Using Lie group theory we construct explicit solitary wave solutions of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger systems with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearities. We present the general theory, use it to construct different families of explicit solutions and study their linear and dynamical stability.
Using canonical transformations we obtain localized (in space) exact solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with space and time modulated nonlinearity and in the presence of an external potential depending on space and time. In particular we obtain exact solutions of NLSE in the presence of a number of non Hermitian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric external potentials.
We consider a coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with modulated self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and four-wave mixing nonlinearities and varying refractive index in anisotropic graded index nonlinear medium. By identifying an appropriate similarity transformation, we obtain a general localized wave solution and investigate their dynamics with a proper set of modulated nonlinearities. In particular, our study reveals different manifestations of localized waves such as stable solitons, Akhmediev breathers, Ma breathers, and rogue waves of bright, bright-dark, and dar…
We present exact numerical solutions in the form of spatially localized three-dimensional (3D) nonrotating and rotating (azimuthon) multipole solitons in the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined by a parabolic trap. We numerically show that the 3D azimuthon solutions exist as a continuous family parametrized by the angular velocity (or, equivalently, the modulational depth). By a linear stability analysis we show that 3D azimuthons with a sufficiently large phase modulational depth can be stable. The results are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
We put forward new properties of lattice solitons in materials and geometries where both, the linear refractive index and the nonlinearity are spatially modulated. We show that the interplay between linear and out-of-phase nonlinear refractive index modulations results in new soliton properties, including modifications of the soliton stability and transverse mobility, as well as shape transformations that may be controlled, e.g., by varying the light intensity.
The existence and stability of stable bright solitons in one-dimensional (1D) media with a spatially periodical modulated Kerr nonlinearity are demonstrated by means of the linear-stability analysis and in direct numerical simulations. The nonlinear potential landscape can balance the fractional-order diffraction and thus stabilizes the solitons, making the model unique and governed by the recently introduced fractional Schrödinger equation with a self-focusing cubic nonlinear lattice. Both 1D fundamental and multihump solitons (in forms of dipole and tripole ones) are found, which occupy one …
Using similarity transformations we construct explicit nontrivial solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with potentials and nonlinearities depending on time and on the spatial coordinates. We present the general theory and use it to calculate explicitly non-trivial solutions such as periodic (breathers), resonant or quasiperiodically oscillating solitons. Some implications to the field of matter-waves are also discussed.
We address the properties of two-dimensional surface solitons supported by the interface of a waveguide array whose nonlinearity is periodically modulated. When the nonlinearity strength reaches its minima at the points where the linear refractive index attains its maxima, we found that nonlinear surface waves exist and can be made stable only within a limited band of input energy flows, and for lattice depths exceeding a lower threshold.
We consider the high-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation derived earlier by Sedletsky [Ukr. J. Phys. 48(1), 82 (2003)] for the first-harmonic envelope of slowly modulated gravity waves on the surface of finite-depth irrotational, inviscid, and incompressible fluid with flat bottom. This equation takes into account the third-order dispersion and cubic nonlinear dispersive terms. We rewrite this equation in dimensionless form featuring only one dimensionless parameter $kh$, where $k$ is the carrier wavenumber and $h$ is the undisturbed fluid depth. We show that one-soliton solutions of the clas…
We report theoretical prediction of exact localized solutions for dynamics of surface gravity waves, at the critical point kh=1.363, modelled by higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The model possess domain walls (kink solitons) and dark solitons modulated through different phase profiles. The parametric domains are delineated for the existence of soliton solutions. The effect of wave parameters have been discussed on the amplitude of surface gravity waves. Our work is motivated by Tsitoura et al. [1], on experimental and analytical observation of phase domain walls for deep water surf…
We develop a general classification of the infinite number of families of solitons and soliton complexes in the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii/nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a nonlinear lattice pseudopotential, i.e., periodically modulated coefficient in front of the cubic term, which takes both positive and negative local values. This model finds direct implementations in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and nonlinear optics. The most essential finding is the existence of two branches of dipole solitons (DSs), which feature an antisymmetric shape, essentially squeezed into a single cel…
We address vortex solitons supported by optical lattices featuring modulation of both the linear and nonlinear refractive indices. We find that when the modulation is out-of-phase the competition between both effects results in remarkable shape transformations of the solitons which profoundly affect their properties and stability. Nonlinear refractive index modulation is found to impose restrictions on the maximal power of off-site solitons, which are shown to be stable only below a maximum nonlinearity modulation depth.
The intrinsic nonlinearity is the most remarkable characteristic of the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) systems. Many studies have been done on atomic BECs with time- and space- modulated nonlinearities, while there is few work considering the atomic-molecular BECs with space-modulated nonlinearities. Here, we obtain two kinds of Jacobi elliptic solutions and a family of rational solutions of the atomic-molecular BECs with trapping potential and space-modulated nonlinearity and consider the effect of three-body interaction on the localized matter wave solutions. The topological properties of …
We address necklace solitons supported by circular waveguide arrays with out-of-phase modulation of nonlinearity and linear refractive index. Such two-dimensional necklace solitons appear as rings of multiple out-of-phase bright spots. We show that necklace solitons are stable if their peak intensity is low or moderate and that the domain of stability shrinks with increasing nonlinearity modulation depth. However, we find that the stability domains expand with increasing number of necklace spots.
We consider a modulated discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) model with alternating on-site potential, having a linear spectrum with two branches separated by a 'forbidden' gap. Nonlinear localized time-periodic solutions with frequencies in the gap and near the gap -- discrete gap and out-gap breathers (DGBs and DOGBs) -- are investigated. Their linear stability is studied varying the system parameters from the continuous to the anti-continuous limit, and different types of oscillatory and real instabilities are revealed. It is shown, that generally DGBs in infinite modulated DNLS chains wit…
We study the properties of the ground state of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations with spatially inhomogeneous interactions and show that it experiences a strong localization on the spatial region where the interactions vanish. At the same time, tunneling to regions with positive values of the interactions is strongly supressed by the nonlinear interactions and as the number of particles is increased it saturates in the region of finite interaction values. The chemical potential has a cutoff value in these systems and thus takes values on a finite interval. The applicability of the phenomenon to …
We address the stability of light bullets supported by Bessel optical lattices with out-of-phase modulation of the linear and nonlinear refractive indices. We show that spatial modulation of the nonlinearity significantly modifies the shapes and stability domains of the light bullets. The addressed bullets can be stable, provided that the peak intensity does not exceed a critical value. We show that the width of the stability domain in terms of the propagation constant may be controlled by varying the nonlinearity modulation depth. In particular, we show that the maximum energy of the stable b…
In the present work, we revisit the highly active research area of inhomogeneously nonlinear defocusing media and consider the existence, spectral stability and nonlinear dynamics of bright solitary waves in them. We use the anti-continuum limit of vanishing coupling as the starting point of our analysis, enabling in this way a systematic characterization of the branches of solutions. Our stability findings and bifurcation characteristics reveal the enhanced robustness and wider existence intervals of solutions with a broader support, culminating in the "extended" solution in which all sites a…
We study two-component solitons and their symmetry-breaking bifurcations (SBBs) in linearly coupled photonic systems with a spatially inhomogeneous strength of the coupling. One system models an inverted virtual photonic crystal, built by periodically doping the host medium with atoms implementing the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In this system, two soliton-forming probe beams with different carrier frequencies are mutually coupled by the EIT-induced effective linear interconversion. The system is described by coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations for the probes, wit…
Competing nonlinearities, such as the cubic (Kerr) and quintic nonlinear terms whose strengths are of opposite signs (the coefficients in front of the nonlinearities), exist in various physical media (in particular, in optical and matter-wave media). A benign competition between self-focusing cubic and self-defocusing quintic nonlinear nonlinearities (known as cubic-quintic model) plays an important role in creating and stabilizing the self-trapping of D-dimensional localized structures, in the contexts of standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We incorporate an external periodic potential (…
Solitons, nonlinear particle-like excitations with inalterable properties (amplitude, shape, and velocity) as they propagate, are omnipresent in many branches of science---and in physics in particular. Flat-top solitons are a novel type of bright solitons that have not been well explored in pure nonlinear media. Here, a model of nonlinear Kerr (cubic) media of ultracold atoms with spatially modulated repulsive interactions is proposed and shown to support a vast variety of stable flat-top matter-wave solitons, including one-dimensional (1D) flat-top fundamental and multipole solitons, two-dime…
We consider a two-dimensional (2D) generalization of a recently proposed model [Phys. Rev. E 88, 032905 (2013)], which gives rise to bright discrete solitons supported by the defocusing nonlinearity whose local strength grows from the center to the periphery. We explore the 2D model starting from the anti-continuum (AC) limit of vanishing coupling. In this limit, we can construct a wide variety of solutions including not only single-site excitations, but also dipole and quadrupole ones. Additionally, two separate families of solutions are explored: the usual "extended" unstaggered bright solit…
We show that self-localized ground states can be created in the spin-balanced gas of fermions with repulsion between the spin components, whose strength grows from the center to periphery, in combination with the harmonic-oscillator (HO) trapping potential acting in one or two transverse directions. We also consider the ground state in the non-interacting Fermi gas under the action of the spatially growing tightness of the one- or two-dimensional (1D or 2D) HO confinement. These settings are considered in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsacker (TF-vW) density functional. It is found …
We apply the averaging method to analyze spatio-temportal structures in nonlinear Schrödinger equations and thereby study the dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates with the scattering length varying periodically in spatial and crossing zero. Infinitely many (positive measure set) modulated amplitude waves (periodic and quasi-periodic), which are instable, can be proved to exist by adjusting the intergration constant c on some open interval. Finally, some numerical simulations support our results.
I consider the problem of self-oscillatory systems undergoing a homogeneous Hopf bifurcation when they are submitted to an external forcing that is periodic in time, at a frequency close to the system's natural frequency (1:1 resonance), and whose amplitude is slowly modulated in space. Starting from a general, unspecified model and making use of standard multiple scales analysis, I show that the close-to-threshold dynamics of such systems is universally governed by a generalized, complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. The nature of the generalization depends on the strength and of other feat…
We investigate wave propagation in rotationally symmetric tubes with a periodic spatial modulation of cross section. Using an asymptotic perturbation analysis, the governing quasi two-dimensional reaction-diffusion equation can be reduced into a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion-advection equation. Assuming a weak perturbation by the advection term and using projection method, in a second step, an equation of motion for traveling waves within such tubes can be derived. Both methods predict properly the nonlinear dependence of the propagation velocity on the ratio of the modulation period of t…
We demonstrate the existence of one and two-dimensional bright solitons in the Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive dipole-dipole interactions induced by a combination of dc and ac polarizing fields, oriented perpendicular to the plane in which the BEC is trapped, assuming that the strength of the fields grows in the radial ($r$) direction faster than $r^{3}$. Stable tightly confined 1D and 2D fundamental solitons, twisted solitons in 1D, and solitary vortices in 2D are found in a numerical form. The fundamental solitons remain robust under the action of an expulsive potential, which is ind…
We reformulate the one-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation as a fourth order ordinary differential equation in order to find stationary spatially-periodic solutions. Using this formalism, we prove the existence and stability of stationary modulated-amplitude wave solutions. Approximate analytic expressions and a comparison with numerics are given.
We introduce a model for the condensate of dipolar atoms or molecules, in which the dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) is periodically modulated in space, due to a periodic change of the local orientation of the permanent dipoles, imposed by the corresponding structure of an external field (the necessary field can be created, in particular, by means of magnetic lattices, which are available to the experiment). The system represents a realization of a nonlocal nonlinear lattice, which has a potential to support various spatial modes. By means of numerical methods and variational approximation (VA)…
In the framework of Gurevich and Pitaevskii approach [1] we construct modulated by Whitham [2] solution of nonlinear Shrodinger (NS) equation partially saturating the modulational instability. This solution describes new scenario of monochromatic wave evolution in NS equation which leads to generation of new phase and oscillation region.
Vector rogue wave (RW) formation and their dynamics in Rabi coupled two- and three-species Bose-Einstein condensates with spatially varying dispersion and nonlinearity are studied. For this purpose, we obtain the RW solution of the two- and three-component inhomogeneous Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) systems with Rabi coupling by introducing suitable rotational and similarity transformations. Then, we investigate the effect of inhomogeneity (spatially varying dispersion, trapping potential and nonlinearity) on vector RWs for two different forms of potential strengths, namely periodic (optical lattice) …
We study the presence of exact localized solutions in a quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inhomogeneous nonlinearities. Using a specific ansatz, we transform the nonautonomous nonlinear equation into an autonomous one, which engenders composed states corresponding to solutions localized in space, with an oscillating behavior in time. Direct numerical simulations are employed to verify the stability of the modulated solutions against small random perturbations.
Spatially localized and periodic field patterns in periodically modulated optical parametric amplifiers and oscillators are studied. In the degenerate case (equal signal and idler beams) we elaborate the systematic method of construction of the stationary localized modes in the amplifiers, study their properties and stability. We describe a method of constructing periodic solutions in optical parametric oscillators, by adjusting the form of the external driven field to the given form of either signal or pump beams.
We show dissipative spatial solitons in nonlinear optical micro-resonators in which the refractive index is laterally modulated. In addition to "normal" and "staggered" dissipative solitons, similar to those in spatially modulated conservative systems, a narrow "mid-band" soliton is shown, having no counterparts in conservative systems.
We introduce a one-dimensional model based on the nonlinear Schrodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation where the local nonlinearity is subject to spatially periodic modulation in terms of the Jacobi dn function, with three free parameters including the period, amplitude, and internal form-factor. An exact periodic solution is found for each set of parameters and, which is more important for physical realizations, we solve the inverse problem and predict the period and amplitude of the modulation that yields a particular exact spatially periodic state. Numerical stability analysis demonstrates that …
