Localization phenomena in Nonlinear Schrodinger equations with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearities: Theory and applications to Bose-Einstein condensates
We study the properties of the ground state of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations with spatially inhomogeneous interactions and show that it experiences a strong localization on the spatial region where the interactions vanish. At the same time, tunneling to regions with positive values of the interactions is strongly supressed by the nonlinear interactions and as the number of particles is increased it saturates in the region of finite interaction values. The chemical potential has a cutoff value in these systems and thus takes values on a finite interval. The applicability of the phenomenon to Bose-Einstein condensates is discussed in detail.
Using Lie group theory we construct explicit solitary wave solutions of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger systems with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearities. We present the general theory, use it to construct different families of explicit solutions and study their linear and dynamical stability.
Using Lie group theory and canonical transformations we construct explicit solutions of nonlinear Schrodinger equations with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearities. We present the general theory, use it to show that localized nonlinearities can support bound states with an arbitrary number solitons and discuss other applications of interest to the field of nonlinear matter waves.
Using Lie group theory and canonical transformations, we construct explicit solutions of nonlinear Schrodinger equations with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearities. We present the general theory, use it to study different examples and use the qualitative theory of dynamical systems to obtain some properties of these solutions.
We study the properties of the ground state of Bose-Einstein condensates with spatially inhomogeneous interactions and show that the atom density experiences a strong localization at the spatial region where the scattering length is close to zero while tunneling to regions with positive values of the scattering length is strongly supressed by the nonlinear interactions.
We apply the averaging method to analyze spatio-temportal structures in nonlinear Schrödinger equations and thereby study the dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates with the scattering length varying periodically in spatial and crossing zero. Infinitely many (positive measure set) modulated amplitude waves (periodic and quasi-periodic), which are instable, can be proved to exist by adjusting the intergration constant c on some open interval. Finally, some numerical simulations support our results.
The dynamics of non-autonomous bright matter-wave solitons in Rabi coupled binary Bose-Einstein condensates is explored. By performing a unitary and similarity/lens-type transformation, we reduce the non-autonomous Gross-Pitaevskii equation into the celebrated Manakov model. Then, we construct the exact bright solitons of the non-autonomous Gross-Pitaevskii system in the presence of time dependent nonlinearities for two specific forms, namely hyperbolic nonlinearities, which are of physical interest. The experimental possibilities of realizing the forms of temporally modulated potentials corre…
We investigate non-autonomous solitons in a general coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CCNLS) system with temporally modulated nonlinearities and with an external harmonic oscillator potential. This general CCNLS system encompasses three distinct types of CCNLS equations that describe the dynamics of beam propagation in an inhomogeneous Kerr-like nonlinear optical medium for different choices of nonlinear polarizations owing to the anisotropy of the medium. We identify a generalized similarity transformation to relate the considered model into the standard integrable homogeneous coupled…
We show that bimodal systems with a spatially nonuniform defocusing cubic nonlinearity, whose strength grows toward the periphery, can support stable two-component solitons. For a sufficiently strong XPM interaction, vector solitons with overlapping components become unstable, while stable families of solitons with spatially separated components emerge. Stable complexes with separated components may be composed not only of fundamental solitons, but of multipoles too.
This work deals with matter-wave bright soliton molecules in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates described by three-component Gross-Pitaevskii equations with non-autonomous nonlinearities that can be tuned by Feshbach resonance management. Notably, it portrays the possibility of generating bright bound soliton molecules with the help of an exact analytic solution under a controlled velocity resonance mechanism. Results show that these soliton molecules experience the effects of time-varying nonlinearities and modulate themselves during propagation by keeping their stable properties. Significantly…
Extending the recent work on models with spatially nonuniform nonlinearities, we study bright solitons generated by the nonpolynomial self-defocusing (SDF) nonlinearity in the framework of the one-dimensional (1D) Muñoz-Mateo - Delgado (MM-D) equation (the 1D reduction of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with the SDF nonlinearity), with the local strength of the nonlinearity growing at any rate faster than |x| at large values of coordinate x. We produce numerical solutions and analytical ones, obtained by means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA), for nodeless ground states, and for excited m…
In this work, we consider quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), with spatially varying collisional interactions, trapped in double well potentials. In particular, we study a setup in which such a 'collisionally inhomogeneous' BEC has the same (attractive-attractive or repulsive-repulsive) or different (attractive-repulsive) type of interparticle interactions. Our analysis is based on the continuation of the symmetric ground state and anti-symmetric first excited state of the noninteracting (linear) limit into their nonlinear counterparts. The collisional inhomogeneity produce…
The formation and dynamics of full vortex gap solitons (FVGSs) is investigated in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), Zeeman splitting (ZS), and competing cubic and quintic nonlinear terms, while the usual kinetic energy is neglected, assuming that it is much smaller than the SOC and ZS terms. Unlike previous SOC system with the cubic-only attractive nonlinearity, in which solely semi-vortices may be stable, with the vorticity carried by a single component, the present system supports stable FVGS states, with the vorticity present in both components (such st…
We investigate dark-bright vector solitary wave solutions to the coupled non-linear Schrödinger equations which describe an inhomogeneous two-species Bose-Einstein condensate. While these structures are well known in non-linear fiber optics, we show that spatial inhomogeneity strongly affects their motion, stability, and interaction, and that current technology suffices for their creation and control in ultracold trapped gases. The effects of controllably different interparticle scattering lengths, and stability against three-dimensional deformations, are also examined.
In this paper we study a general nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a time dependent harmonic potential. Despite the lack of traslational invariance we find a symmetry trasformation which, up from any solution, produces infinitely many others which are centered on classical trajectories. The results presented here imply that, not only the center of mass of the wave-packet satisfies the Ehrenfest theorem and is decoupled from the dynamics of the wave-packet, but also the shape of the solution is independent of the behaviour of the center of the wave. Our findings have implications on the dynam…
We study the emergence of Faraday waves in cigar-shaped collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates subject to periodic modulation of the radial confinement. Considering a Gaussian-shaped radially inhomogeneous scattering length, we show through extensive numerical simulations and detailed variational treatment that the spatial period of the emerging Faraday waves increases as the inhomogeneity of the scattering length gets weaker, and that it saturates once the width of the radial inhomogeneity reaches the radial width of the condensate. In the regime of strongly inhomogeneous scatt…
We examine the spectral properties of single and multiple matter-wave dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in parabolic traps, where the scattering length is periodically modulated. In addition to the large-density limit picture previously established for homogeneous nonlinearities, we explore a perturbative analysis in the vicinity of the linear limit, which provides good agreement with the observed spectral modes. Between these two analytically tractable limits, we use numerical computations to fill in the relevant intermediate regime. We find that the scattering length modula…
We study stability of solitary vortices in the two-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a spatially localized region of self-attraction. Solving the respective Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and running direct simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveals that vortices with topological charge up to S = 6 (at least) are stable above a critical value of the chemical potential (i.e., below a critical number of atoms, which sharply increases with S). The largest nonlinearity-localization radius admitting the stabilization of the higher-order vortices is estimat…
We study the presence of exact localized solutions in a quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inhomogeneous nonlinearities. Using a specific ansatz, we transform the nonautonomous nonlinear equation into an autonomous one, which engenders composed states corresponding to solutions localized in space, with an oscillating behavior in time. Direct numerical simulations are employed to verify the stability of the modulated solutions against small random perturbations.
We consider the dynamics of dark matter solitons moving through non-uniform cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates described by the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii equation with generalized nonlinearities, in the case when the condition for the modulation stability of the Bose-Einstein condensate is fulfilled. The analytical expression for the frequency of the oscillations of a deep dark soliton is derived for nonlinearities which are arbitrary functions of the density, while specific results are discussed for the physically relevant case of a cubic-quintic nonlinearity modeling two- and three-bod…
We study Faraday and resonant waves in two-component quasi-one-dimensional (cigar-shaped) collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates subject to periodic modulation of the radial confinement. We show by means of extensive numerical simulations that, as the system exhibits stronger spatially-localised binary collisions (whose scattering length is taken for convenience to be of Gaussian form), the system becomes effectively a linear one. In other words, as the scattering length approaches a delta-function, we observe that the two nonlinear configurations typical for binary cigar-shaped…
We investigate the dynamics of an effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with scattering length $a$ subjected to a spatially periodic modulation, $a=a(x)=a(x+L)$. This "collisionally inhomogeneous" BEC is described by a Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation whose nonlinearity coefficient is a periodic function of $x$. We transform this equation into a GP equation with constant coefficient $a$ and an additional effective potential and study a class of extended wave solutions of the transformed equation. For weak underlying inhomogeneity, the effective potential takes a form resembl…
We study the structure, stability, and dynamics of dark solitary waves in parabolically trapped, collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spatially periodic variations of the scattering length. This collisional inhomogeneity yields a nonlinear lattice, which we tune from a small-amplitude, approximately sinusoidal structure to a periodic sequence of densely spaced spikes. We start by investigating time-independent inhomogeneities, and we subsequently examine the dynamical response when one starts with a collisionally homogeneous BEC and then switches on an inhomogeneit…
We investigate the dynamics of bright matter wave solitons in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with time modulated nonlinearities. We obtain soliton solutions of an integrable autonomous three-coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (3-GP) equations using Hirota's method involving a non-standard bilinearization. The similarity transformations are developed to construct the soliton solutions of non-autonomous 3-GP system. The non-autonomous solitons admit different density profiles. An interesting phenomenon of soliton compression is identified for kink-like nonlinearity coefficient with Hermite-Gaussian-like…
To facilitate the analysis of pattern formation and of the related phase transitions in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) we present an explicit approximate mapping from the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation with cubic nonlinearity to a phase field crystal (PFC) model. This approximation is valid close to the superfluid-supersolid phase transition boundary. The simplified PFC model permits the exploration of bifurcations and phase transitions via numerical path continuation employing standard software. While revealing the detailed structure of the bifurcations present in the system, we demonst…
We study certain stationary and time-evolution problems of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates of weakly interacting alkali atoms described by a nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. We suggest a pseudospectral method involving Laguerre polynomials to solve the time dependent GP for a spherically symmetric trap potential. The radial wavefunction and energy values have been calculated for different nonlinearities. Further, we study the effect of suddenly changing the interatomic scattering length or harmonic oscillator trap potential in the condensate. We also investigate the frequency of osc…
It is shown that inhomogeneous nonlinear interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in an optical lattice can result in delocalizing transition in one dimension, what sharply contrasts to the known behavior of discrete and periodic systems with homogeneous nonlinearity. The transition can be originated either by decreasing the amplitude of the linear periodic potential or by the change of the mean value of the periodic nonlinearity. The dynamics of the delocalizing transition is studied.
We investigate the dynamics of the localized nonlinear matter wave in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with trapping potentials and nonlinearities dependent on time and space. We solve the three coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation by similarity transformation and obtain two families of exact matter wave solutions in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions and Mathieu equation. The localized states of the spinor matter wave describe the dynamics of vector breathing solitons, moving breathing solitons, quasibreathing solitons and resonant solitons. The results of stability show that one order vector br…
The intrinsic nonlinearity is the most remarkable characteristic of the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) systems. Many studies have been done on atomic BECs with time- and space- modulated nonlinearities, while there is few work considering the atomic-molecular BECs with space-modulated nonlinearities. Here, we obtain two kinds of Jacobi elliptic solutions and a family of rational solutions of the atomic-molecular BECs with trapping potential and space-modulated nonlinearity and consider the effect of three-body interaction on the localized matter wave solutions. The topological properties of …
It is shown that using the similarity transformations, a set of three-dimensional p-q nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations with inhomogeneous coefficients can be reduced to one-dimensional stationary NLS equation with constant or varying coefficients, thus allowing for obtaining exact localized and periodic wave solutions. In the suggested reduction the original coordinates in the (1+3)-space are mapped into a set of one-parametric coordinate surfaces, whose parameter plays the role of the coordinate of the one-dimensional equation. We describe the algorithm of finding solutions and concentra…
We show that the energetic instability of dark solitons is associated with particle-like motion, and present a simple equation of motion, based on the Mössbauer effect, for dark solitons propagating in inhomogeneous Thomas-Fermi clouds. Numerical simulations support our theory. We discuss some experimental approaches.
In this paper we study a mean field model for the dynamics of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in two dimensional pseudo-relativistic materials. This model is relatively simple, but contains stable solutions called oscillons which are absent in non-relativistic condensates. We report on a variety of scenarios including interactions between pairs of oscillons and oscillons propagating across an inhomogeneous material boundary. Hitherto relativistic oscillons have been studied only in high energy physics and cosmology and their relevance has not been highlighted so far in condensed matter…
A spatially inhomogeneous, trapped two-component Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms in the phase separation mode has been numerically simulated. It has been demonstrated for the first time that the surface tension between the components makes possible the existence of drops of a denser phase floating on the surface of a less dense phase. Depending on the harmonic trap anisotropy and other system parameters, a stable equilibrium of the drop is achieved either at the poles or at the equator. The drop flotation sometimes persists even in the presence of an attached quantized vortex.
