Using Lie group theory we construct explicit solitary wave solutions of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger systems with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearities. We present the general theory, use it to construct different families of explicit solutions and study their linear and dynamical stability.
We present a wide class of novel solitary and periodic waves in a non-centrosymmetric waveguide exhibiting second- and third-order nonlinearities. We show the existence of bright, gray, and W-shaped solitary waves as well as periodic waves for extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. We also obtained the exact analytical algebraic-type solitary waves of the governing equation, including bright and W-shaped waves. The results illustrate the propagation of potentially rich set of nonlinear structures through the optical waveguiding media. Such privileged w…
Using Lie group theory and canonical transformations, we construct explicit solutions of nonlinear Schrodinger equations with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearities. We present the general theory, use it to study different examples and use the qualitative theory of dynamical systems to obtain some properties of these solutions.
Boussinesq-type wave equations involve nonlinearities and dispersion. In this paper a Boussinesq-type equation with amplitude-dependent nonlinearities is presented. Such a model was proposed by Heimburg and Jackson (2005) for describing longitudinal waves in biomembranes and later improved by Engelbrecht et al. (2015) taking into account the microinertia of a biomembrane. The steady solution in the form of a solitary wave is derived and the influence of nonlinear and dispersive terms over a large range of possible sets of coefficients demonstrated. The solutions emerging from arbitrary initial…
Exact bright, dark, antikink solitary waves and Jacobi elliptic function solutions of the generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation with arbitrary power-law nonlinearity will be constructed in this work. The method used to carry out the integration is the F-expansion method. Solutions obtained have fractional and integer negative or positive power-law nonlinearities. These solutions have many free parameters such that they may be used to simulate many experimental situations, and to precisely control the dynamics of the system.
We investigate non-autonomous solitons in a general coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CCNLS) system with temporally modulated nonlinearities and with an external harmonic oscillator potential. This general CCNLS system encompasses three distinct types of CCNLS equations that describe the dynamics of beam propagation in an inhomogeneous Kerr-like nonlinear optical medium for different choices of nonlinear polarizations owing to the anisotropy of the medium. We identify a generalized similarity transformation to relate the considered model into the standard integrable homogeneous coupled…
Using Lie group theory and canonical transformations we construct explicit solutions of nonlinear Schrodinger equations with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearities. We present the general theory, use it to show that localized nonlinearities can support bound states with an arbitrary number solitons and discuss other applications of interest to the field of nonlinear matter waves.
We study the structure, stability, and dynamics of dark solitary waves in parabolically trapped, collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spatially periodic variations of the scattering length. This collisional inhomogeneity yields a nonlinear lattice, which we tune from a small-amplitude, approximately sinusoidal structure to a periodic sequence of densely spaced spikes. We start by investigating time-independent inhomogeneities, and we subsequently examine the dynamical response when one starts with a collisionally homogeneous BEC and then switches on an inhomogeneit…
We discuss several novel types of multi-component (temporal and spatial) envelope solitary waves that appear in fiber and waveguide nonlinear optics. In particular, we describe multi-channel solitary waves in bit-parallel-wavelength fiber transmission systems for high performance computer networks, multi-colour parametric spatial solitary waves due to cascaded nonlinearities of quadratic materials, and quasiperiodic envelope solitons due to quasi-phase-matching in Fibonacci optical superlattices.
Weak interactions of solitary waves in the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations are studied. It is first shown that these interactions exhibit similar fractal dependence on initial conditions for different nonlinearities. Then by using the Karpman-Solov'ev method, a universal system of dynamical equations is derived for the velocities, amplitudes, positions and phases of interacting solitary waves. These dynamical equations contain a single parameter, which accounts for the different forms of nonlinearity. When this parameter is zero, these dynamical equations are integrable, and the ex…
We study the properties of the ground state of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations with spatially inhomogeneous interactions and show that it experiences a strong localization on the spatial region where the interactions vanish. At the same time, tunneling to regions with positive values of the interactions is strongly supressed by the nonlinear interactions and as the number of particles is increased it saturates in the region of finite interaction values. The chemical potential has a cutoff value in these systems and thus takes values on a finite interval. The applicability of the phenomenon to …
We study the formation and propagation of chirped elliptic and solitary waves in cubic-quintic nonlinear Helmholtz (CQNLH) equation. This system describes nonparaxial pulse propagation in a planar waveguide with Kerr-like and quintic nonlinearities along with spatial dispersion originating from the nonparaxial effect that becomes dominant when the conventional slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA) fails. We first carry out the modulational instability (MI) analysis of a plane wave in this system by employing the linear stability analysis and investigate the influence of different physic…
We investigate the existence and stability properties of the chirped gray and anti-dark solitary waves within the framework of coupled cubic nonlinear Helmholtz equation in the presence of self steepening and self frequency shift. We show that for a particular combination of the self steepening and the self frequency shift, there is not only chirping but also chirp reversal. Specifically, the associated nontrivial phase has two intensity dependent terms, one varies as the reciprocal of the intensity while the other, which depends on non-Kerr nonlinearities, is directly proportional to the inte…
We show that bimodal systems with a spatially nonuniform defocusing cubic nonlinearity, whose strength grows toward the periphery, can support stable two-component solitons. For a sufficiently strong XPM interaction, vector solitons with overlapping components become unstable, while stable families of solitons with spatially separated components emerge. Stable complexes with separated components may be composed not only of fundamental solitons, but of multipoles too.
We demonstrate the existence of two species of stable bright solitons, fundamental and dipole ones, in one-dimensional self-defocusing nonlocal media, with the local value of nonlinearity coefficient having one or several minima and growing at any rate faster than |x| at large values of coordinate x. The model can be derived for a slab optical waveguide with thermal nonlinearity. The most essential difference from the local counterpart of this system is the competition between two different spatial scales, the one determining the modulation pattern of the nonlinearity coefficient, and the corr…
Bifurcations of solitary waves are classified for the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations with arbitrary nonlinearities and external potentials in arbitrary spatial dimensions. Analytical conditions are derived for three major types of solitary wave bifurcations, namely saddle-node bifurcations, pitchfork bifurcations and transcritical bifurcations. Shapes of power diagrams near these bifurcations are also obtained. It is shown that for pitchfork and transcritical bifurcations, their power diagrams look differently from their familiar solution-bifurcation diagrams. Numerical examples f…
Motivated by recent developments in the realm of matter waves, we explore the potential of creating solitary waves on the surface of a torus. This is an intriguing perspective due to the role of curvature in the shape and dynamics of the coherent structures. We find different families of bright solitary waves for attractive nonlinearities including ones localized in both angular directions, as well as waves localized in one direction and homogeneous in the other. The waves localized in both angular directions have also been partitioned into two types: those whose magnitude decays to zero and t…
Extending the recent work on models with spatially nonuniform nonlinearities, we study bright solitons generated by the nonpolynomial self-defocusing (SDF) nonlinearity in the framework of the one-dimensional (1D) Muñoz-Mateo - Delgado (MM-D) equation (the 1D reduction of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with the SDF nonlinearity), with the local strength of the nonlinearity growing at any rate faster than |x| at large values of coordinate x. We produce numerical solutions and analytical ones, obtained by means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA), for nodeless ground states, and for excited m…
We consider a class of fully-nonlinear Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) lattices, consisting of a chain of particles coupled by fractional power nonlinearities of order $α>1$. This class of systems incorporates a classical Hertzian model describing acoustic wave propagation in chains of touching beads in the absence of precompression. We analyze the propagation of localized waves when $α$ is close to unity. Solutions varying slowly in space and time are searched with an appropriate scaling, and two asymptotic models of the chain of particles are derived consistently. The first one is a logarithmic KdV e…
To explore resonance phenomena in the nonlinear region, we show by experimental measurements and theoretical analyses that resonance happens in modulation instability (MI) from non-instantaneous nonlinearities in photorefractive crystals. With a temporally periodic modulation in the external bias voltage, corresponding to a modulation in the nonlinear strength, an enhancement in the visibility of MI at resonant frequency is reported through spontaneous optical pattern formations. Modeled by such temporally periodic nonlinear driving force to the system, theoretical curves obtained from a nonli…
We investigate dark-bright vector solitary wave solutions to the coupled non-linear Schrödinger equations which describe an inhomogeneous two-species Bose-Einstein condensate. While these structures are well known in non-linear fiber optics, we show that spatial inhomogeneity strongly affects their motion, stability, and interaction, and that current technology suffices for their creation and control in ultracold trapped gases. The effects of controllably different interparticle scattering lengths, and stability against three-dimensional deformations, are also examined.
Optical microcavities supporting exciton-polariton quasi-particles offer one of the most powerful platforms for investigation of rapidly developing area of topological photonics in general, and of photonic topological insulators in particular. Energy bands of the microcavity polariton graphene are readily controlled by magnetic field and influenced by the spin-orbit coupling effects, a combination leading to formation of linear unidirectional edge states in polariton topological insulators as predicted very recently. In this work we depart from the linear limit of non-interacting polaritons an…
We study statically homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates with spatially inhomogeneous interactions and outline an experimental realization of compensating linear and nonlinear potentials that can yield constant-density solutions. We illustrate how the presence of a step in the nonlinearity coefficient can only be revealed dynamically and consider, in particular, how to reveal it by exploiting the inhomogeneity of the sound speed with a defect-dragging experiment. We conduct computational experiments and observe the spontaneous emergence of dark solitary waves. We use effective-potential theor…
We show that an optical system involving competing higher-order Kerr nonlinearities can support the existence of ultrasolitons, namely extremely localized modes that only appear above a certain threshold for the central intensity. Such new solitary waves can be produced for powers below the usual collapse threshold, but they can also coexist with ordinary, lower-intensity solitons. We derive analytical conditions for the occurrence of multistability and analyze the dynamics of the different kinds of fundamental eigenmodes that can be excited in these nonlinear systems. We also discuss the poss…
In this article we discuss a new Hamiltonian PDE arising from a class of equations appearing in the study of magma, partially molten rock, in the Earth's interior. Under physically justifiable simplifications, a scalar, nonlinear, degenerate, dispersive wave equation may be derived to describe the evolution of $ϕ$, the fraction of molten rock by volume, in the Earth. These equations have two power nonlinearities which specify the constitutive realitions for bulk viscosity and permeability in terms of $ϕ$. Previously, they have been shown to admit solitary wave solutions. For a particular relat…
Two different sets of collective-coordinate equations for solitary solutions of Nonlinear Klein-Gordon (NKG) model is introduced. The collective-coordinate equations are derived using different approaches for adding the inhomogeneities as exrernal potentials to the soliton equation of motion. Interaction of the NKG field with a local inhomogeneity like a delta function potential wall and also delta function potential well is investigated using the presented collective-coordinate equations and the results of two different models are compared. Most of the characters of the interaction are derive…
We consider the interaction of two-component bright-bright solitons with a narrow potential barrier (splitter) in the framework of a system of two Gross-Pitaevskii (nonlinear-Schrödinger) equations modeling a binary Bose-Einstein condensate, with self-attraction in each component and cross-attraction between them. The objective is to study splitting of composite solitons, which may be used in the design of two-component soliton-interferometer schemes. We produce approximate analytic results, assuming a weak barrier and applying the perturbation theory in the limit in which the system is integr…
A numerical exploration of a gain-loss nonlinear Schrödinger equation was carried out utilizing over 180000 core hours to conduct more than 10000 unique simulations in an effort to characterize the model's six dimensional parameter space. The study treated the problem in full generality, spanning a minimum of eight orders of magnitude for each of three linear and nonlinear gain terms and five orders of magnitude for higher order nonlinearities. The gain-loss nonlinear Schrödinger equation is of interest as a model for spin wave envelopes in magnetic thin film active feedback rings and analogou…
We examine the spectral properties of single and multiple matter-wave dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in parabolic traps, where the scattering length is periodically modulated. In addition to the large-density limit picture previously established for homogeneous nonlinearities, we explore a perturbative analysis in the vicinity of the linear limit, which provides good agreement with the observed spectral modes. Between these two analytically tractable limits, we use numerical computations to fill in the relevant intermediate regime. We find that the scattering length modula…
We study the presence of exact localized solutions in a quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inhomogeneous nonlinearities. Using a specific ansatz, we transform the nonautonomous nonlinear equation into an autonomous one, which engenders composed states corresponding to solutions localized in space, with an oscillating behavior in time. Direct numerical simulations are employed to verify the stability of the modulated solutions against small random perturbations.
It is commonly held that a necessary condition for the existence of solitons in nonlinear-wave systems is that the soliton's frequency (spatial or temporal) must not fall into the continuous spectrum of radiation modes. However, this is not always true. We present a new class of {\it % codimension-one} solitons (i.e., those existing at isolated frequency values) that are {\em embedded} into the continuous spectrum. This is possible if the spectrum of the linearized system has (at least) two branches, one corresponding to exponentially localized solutions, and the other to radiation modes. An e…
On the basis of a recently-proposed method to find solitary solutions of generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equations [1]-[3], the existence of an envelope solitonlike solutions of a nonlinear Schrodinger equation containing an anti-cubic nonlinearity (|Psi|^{-4} Psi) plus a "regular" nonlinear part is investigated. In particular, in case the regular nonlinear part consists of a sum of a cubic and a quintic nonlinearities (i.e. q_1 |Psi|^2 Psi + q_2 |Psi|^4 Psi), an upper-shifted bright envelope solitonlike solution is explicitly found.
Optomechanical manipulation of nanoparticles enabling ultimate control over their 3D motion is nowadays one of the most highly demanded links between optics, biology, medicine, microfluidics, etc., paving the way for a plethora of emerging applications from drug delivery to living cells, to new methods of nanofabrication. In this Letter we provide novel type of optical manipulation driven by nonlinear effects and laying on the interface between classical optomechanics and non-linear optics. The formation, stability and the dynamics of optical dissipative solitary waves interacting with dielect…
We study stability of solitary vortices in the two-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a spatially localized region of self-attraction. Solving the respective Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and running direct simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveals that vortices with topological charge up to S = 6 (at least) are stable above a critical value of the chemical potential (i.e., below a critical number of atoms, which sharply increases with S). The largest nonlinearity-localization radius admitting the stabilization of the higher-order vortices is estimat…
It is shown that using the similarity transformations, a set of three-dimensional p-q nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations with inhomogeneous coefficients can be reduced to one-dimensional stationary NLS equation with constant or varying coefficients, thus allowing for obtaining exact localized and periodic wave solutions. In the suggested reduction the original coordinates in the (1+3)-space are mapped into a set of one-parametric coordinate surfaces, whose parameter plays the role of the coordinate of the one-dimensional equation. We describe the algorithm of finding solutions and concentra…
In this paper, we give a proof of the existence of stationary dark soliton solutions or heteroclinic orbits of nonlinear equations of Schrödinger type with periodic inhomogeneous nonlinearity. The result is illustrated with examples of dark solitons for cubic and photorefractive nonlinearities.
Vector solitons are a type of solitary, or non-spreading wavepacket occurring in a nonlinear medium comprised of multiple components. As such, a variety of synthetic systems can be constructed to explore their properties, from nonlinear optics to ultracold atoms, and even in human-scale metamaterials. In quantum systems such as photons or Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), such vector nonlinearities offer a window into complex many-body dynamics, and offer possibilities for quantum communication and information processing. BECs have a rich panoply of internal hyperfine levels, or spin component…
In the present work, we revisit the highly active research area of inhomogeneously nonlinear defocusing media and consider the existence, spectral stability and nonlinear dynamics of bright solitary waves in them. We use the anti-continuum limit of vanishing coupling as the starting point of our analysis, enabling in this way a systematic characterization of the branches of solutions. Our stability findings and bifurcation characteristics reveal the enhanced robustness and wider existence intervals of solutions with a broader support, culminating in the "extended" solution in which all sites a…
The dynamics of single carrier wavepackets in nonlinear wave problems over periodic structures can be often formally approximated by the constant coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) as an effective model for the wavepacket envelope. We provide a detailed proof of this approximation result for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GP) and a semilinear wave equation, both with periodic coefficients in $\mathbb{N}\ni d$ spatial dimensions and with cubic nonlinearities. The proof is carried out in Bloch expansion variables with estimates in an $L^1$-type norm, which translates to an estimate…
The Boussinesq $abcd$ system is a 4-parameter set of equations posed in $\mathbb{R}_t \times \mathbb{R}_x$, originally derived by Bona, Chen and Saut as first order 2-wave approximations of the incompressible and irrotational, two dimensional water wave equations in the shallow water wave regime, in the spirit of the original Boussinesq derivation. Among many particular regimes, depending each of them in terms of the value of the parameters $(a,b,c,d)$ present in the equations, the "generic" regime is characterized by the setting $b,d>0$ and $a,c<0$. The system is hamiltonian if also $b=d$. Th…
In 1995, C. I. Christov and M. G. Velarde introduced the concept of a dissipative soliton in a long-wave thin-film equation [Physica D 86, 323--347]. In the 25 years since, the subject has blossomed to include many related phenomena. The focus of this short note is to survey the conceptual influence of the concept of a "production-dissipation (input-output) energy balance" that they identified. Our recent results on nonlinear periodic waves as dissipative solitons (in a model equation for a ferrofluid interface in a parallel-flow rectangular geometry subject to an inhomogeneous magnetic field)…
Vector rogue wave (RW) formation and their dynamics in Rabi coupled two- and three-species Bose-Einstein condensates with spatially varying dispersion and nonlinearity are studied. For this purpose, we obtain the RW solution of the two- and three-component inhomogeneous Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) systems with Rabi coupling by introducing suitable rotational and similarity transformations. Then, we investigate the effect of inhomogeneity (spatially varying dispersion, trapping potential and nonlinearity) on vector RWs for two different forms of potential strengths, namely periodic (optical lattice) …
