Kontsevich has proven that the Lie homology of the Lie algebra of symplectic vector fields can be computed in terms of the homology of a graph complex. We prove that the Leibniz homology of this Lie algebra can be computed in terms of the homology of a variant of the graph complex endowed with an action of the symmetric groups. The resulting isomorphism is shown to be a Zinbiel-associative bialgebra isomorphism.
An arbitrary Leibniz algebra can be embedded in a differential graded Lie algebra via the derived bracket construction. Such an embedding is called a derived bracket representation. We will construct the universal version of the derived bracket representation, prove that the principal part of the target dg Lie algebra defines a subcomplex of Leibniz (co)homology complex and that the existence of the subcomplex is a reflection of the anti-cyclicity of the Leibniz operad.
It is known that the second Leibniz homology group $HL_2(stl_n(R))$ of the Steinberg Leibniz algebra $stl_n(R)$ is trivial for $n\geq 5$. In this paper, we determine $HL_2(stl_n(R))$ explicitly (which are shown to be not necessarily trivial) for $n=3, 4$ without any assumption on the base ring.
In this paper we will prove a super-analogue of a well-known result by Kontsevich which states that the homology of a certain complex which is generated by isomorphism classes of oriented graphs can be calculated as the Lie algebra homology of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of symplectic vector fields.
Using factorization homology techniques, we give a simple proof of the action of Kontsevich and Soibelman operad on the pair consisting of Hochschild cohomology and Hochschild homology. The proof obviously extends to higher Hochschild cohomology and factorization (also called chiral) homology. Note that our result works in categories of chain complexes but also in categories of modules over a commutative ring spectrum.
In two seminal papers M. Kontsevich introduced graph homology as a tool to compute the homology of three infinite dimensional Lie algebras, associated to the three operads `commutative,' `associative' and `Lie.' We generalize his theorem to all cyclic operads, in the process giving a more careful treatment of the construction than in Kontsevich's original papers. We also give a more explicit treatment of the isomorphisms of graph homologies with the homology of moduli space and Out(F_r) outlined by Kontsevich. In [`Infinitesimal operations on chain complexes of graphs', Mathematische Annalen, …
In this paper we study the homology of 2 versions of the swiss-cheese operad. We prove that the zeroth homology of these two versions are Koszul operads and relate this to strong homotopy Lebiniz pairs and OCHA, defined by Kajiura and Stasheff.
We will consider P-graph complexes, where P is a cyclic operad. P-graph complexes are natural generalizations of Kontsevich's graph complexes -- for P = the operad for associative algebras it is the complex of ribbon graphs, for P = the operad for commutative associative algebras, the complex of all graphs. We construct a `universal class' in the cohomology of the graph complex with coefficients in a theory. The Kontsevich-type invariant is then an evaluation, on a concrete cyclic algebra, of this class. We also explain some results of M. Penkava and A. Schwarz on the construction of an invari…
We compute the stable homology of necklace Lie algebras associated with quivers and give a construction of stable homology classes from certain $A_\infty$-categories. Our construction is a generalization of the construction of homology classes of moduli spaces of curves due to M. Kontsevich. In the second part of the paper we produce a Moyal-type quantization of the symmetric algebra of a necklace Lie algebra. The resulting quantized algebra has natural representations in the usual Moyal quantization of polynomial algebras.
Kontsevich and Soibelman has proved a relation between a non-degenerate cyclic homology element of an A-infinity algebra A and its cyclic inner products on the minimal model of A. We find an explicit formula of this correspondence, in terms of the strong homotopy inner products and negative cyclic cohomology of A. We prove that an equivalence class of the induced strong homotopy inner product depends only on the given negative cyclic cohomology class. Also, we extend such a correspondence to the case of gapped filtered A-infinity algebras.
A standard combinatorial construction, due to Kontsevich, associates to any A-infinity algebra with an invariant inner product, an inhomogeneous class in the cohomology of the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with marked points. We describe an alternative version of this construction based on noncommutative geometry and use it to prove that homotopy equivalent algebras give rise to the same cohomology classes. Along the way we re-prove Kontsevich's theorem relating graph homology to the homology of certain infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. An application to topological conformal field theori…
In two seminal papers Kontsevich used a construction called_graph homology_ as a bridge between certain infinite dimensional Lie algebras and various topological objects, including moduli spaces of curves, the group of outer automorphisms of a free group, and invariants of odd dimensional manifolds. In this paper, we show that Kontsevich's graph complexes, which include graph complexes studied earlier by Culler and Vogtmann and by Penner, have a rich algebraic structure. We define a Lie bracket and cobracket on graph complexes, and in fact show that they are Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras, and th…
A theorem of Kontsevich relates the homology of certain infinite dimensional Lie algebras to graph homology. We formulate this theorem using the language of reversible operads and mated species. All ideas are explained using a pictorial calculus of cuttings and matings. The Lie algebras are constructed as Hamiltonian functions on a symplectic operad manifold. And graph complexes are defined for any mated species. The general formulation gives us many examples including a graph homology for groups. We also speculate on the role of deformation theory for operads in this setting.
In this paper we show that the homology of a certain natural compactification of the moduli space, introduced by Kontsevich in his study of Witten's conjectures, can be described completely algebraically as the homology of a certain differential graded Lie algebra. This two-parameter family is constructed by using a Lie cobracket on the space of noncommutative 0-forms, a structure which corresponds to pinching simple closed curves on a Riemann surface, to deform the noncommutative symplectic geometry described by Kontsevich in his subsequent papers.
According to seminal work of Kontsevich, the unstable homology of the mapping class group of a surface can be computed via the homology of a certain lie algebra. In a recent paper, S. Morita analyzed the abelianization of this lie algebra, thereby constructing a series of candidates for unstable classes in the homology of the mapping class group. In the current paper, we show that these cycles are all nontrivial, representing degree 4k+1 homology classes in the homology of the mapping class group of a genus one surface with 4k+1 punctures.
Let $A$ be a Koszul (or more generally, $N$-Koszul) Calabi-Yau algebra. Inspired by the works of Kontsevich, Ginzburg and Van den Bergh, we show that there is a derived non-commutative Poisson structure on $A$, which induces a graded Lie algebra structure on the cyclic homology of $A$; moreover, we show that the Hochschild homology of $A$ is a Lie module over the cyclic homology and the Connes long exact sequence is in fact a sequence of Lie modules. Finally, we show that the Leibniz-Loday bracket associated to the derived non-commutative Poisson structure on $A$ is naturally mapped to the Ger…
There is a notion of non-commutative Lie algebra called "Leibniz algebra", which is characterized by the condition: left bracketing is a derivation. The purpose of this article is to introduce and study a new notion of algebra, called "associative dialgebra", which is, to the Leibniz algebras, what associative algebras are to Lie algebras. An associative dialgebra is a vector space equipped with two associative operations satisfying three more conditions. For instance, any differential associative algebra gives rise to a dialgebra. In this article we construct and study a (co)homology theory f…
We give a general method for constructing explicit and natural operations on the Hochschild complex of algebras over any PROP with $A_\infty$--multiplication---we think of such algebras as $A_\infty$--algebras "with extra structure". As applications, we obtain an integral version of the Costello-Kontsevich-Soibelman moduli space action on the Hochschild complex of open TCFTs, the Tradler-Zeinalian action of Sullivan diagrams on the Hochschild complex of strict Frobenius algebras, and give applications to string topology in characteristic zero. Our main tool is a generalization of the Hochschil…
In [LMO] a 3-manifold invariant $Ω(M)$ is constructed using a modification of the Kontsevich integral and the Kirby calculus. The invariant $Ω$ takes values in a graded Hopf algebra of Feynman 3-valent graphs. Here we show that for homology 3-spheres the invariant $Ω$ is {\em universal} for all finite type invariants, i.e. $Ω_n$ is an invariant of order $3n$ which dominates all other invariants of the same order. This shows that the set of finite type invariants of homology 3-spheres is equivalent to the Hopf algebra of Feynman 3-valent graphs. Some corollaries are discussed. A theory of group…
We prove several claims made by Kontsevich about the orbifold Euler characteristic of the three types of graph homology introduced by him. For this purpose, first we develop a simplified version of the Feynman diagram method, which requires integrals in one variable only, to obtain the generating functions as asymptotic expansions of certain Gaussian integrals. Finally, following Penner, we relate these integrals to the gamma function in order to compute the individual coefficients of the generating functions.
The homology of Kontsevich's commutative graph complex parameterizes finite type invariants of odd dimensional manifolds. This {\it graph homology} is also the twisted homology of Outer Space modulo its boundary, so gives a nice point of contact between geometric group theory and quantum topology. In this paper we give two different proofs (one algebraic, one geometric) that the commutative graph complex is quasi-isomorphic to the quotient complex obtained by modding out by graphs with cut vertices. This quotient complex has the advantage of being smaller and hence more practical for computati…
This note describes an invariant of rational homology 3-spheres in terms of configuration space integrals which in some sense lies between the invariants of Axelrod and Singer and those of Kontsevich.
In this paper we study a natural extension of Kontsevich's characteristic class construction for A-infinity and L-infinity algebras to the case of curved algebras. These define homology classes on a variant of his graph homology which allows vertices of valence >0. We compute this graph homology, which is governed by star-shaped graphs with odd-valence vertices. We also classify nontrivially curved cyclic A-infinity and L-infinity algebras over a field up to gauge equivalence, and show that these are essentially reduced to algebras of dimension at most two with only even-ary operations. We app…
We study a family of Lie algebras {hO} which are defined for cyclic operads O. Using his graph homology theory, Kontsevich identified the homology of two of these Lie algebras (corresponding to the Lie and associative operads) with the cohomology of outer automorphism groups of free groups and mapping class groups of punctured surfaces, respectively. In this paper we introduce a hairy graph homology theory for O. We show that the homology of hO embeds in hairy graph homology via a trace map which generalizes the trace map defined by S. Morita. For the Lie operad we use the trace map to find la…
Using Kontsevich's identification of the homology of the Lie algebra l_infty with the cohomology of Out(F_r), Morita defined a sequence of 4k-dimensional classes mu_k in the unstable rational homology of Out(F_{2k+2}). He showed by a computer calculation that the first of these is non-trivial, so coincides with the unique non-trivial rational homology class for Out(F_4). Using the "forested graph complex" introduced in [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 3 (2003) 1167--1224], we reinterpret and generalize Morita's cycles, obtaining an unstable cycle for every connected odd-valent graph. (Morita has independ…
We prove that the inclusion from oriented graph complex into graph complex with at least one source is a quasi-isomorphism, showing that homology of the "sourced" graph complex is also equal to the homology of standard Kontsevich's graph complex. This result may have applications in theory of multi-vector fields $T_{\rm poly}^{\geq 1}$ of degree at least one, and to the hairy graph complex which computes the rational homotopy of the space of long knots. The result is generalized to multi-directed graph complexes, showing that all such graph complexes are quasi-isomorphic. These complexes play …
We make explicit computations in the formal symplectic geometry of Kontsevich and determine the Euler characteristics of the three cases, namely commutative, Lie and associative ones, up to certain weights. From these, we obtain some non-triviality results in each case. In particular, we determine the integral Euler characteristics of the outer automorphism groups Out F_n of free groups for all n <= 10 and prove the existence of plenty of rational cohomology classes of odd degrees. We also clarify the relationship of the commutative graph homology with finite type invariants of homology 3-spher…
We propose an explicit relation between the cohomology of compactified and noncompactified moduli spaces of algebraic curves with punctures. This relationship generalizes one between commutative algebras and Lie algebras proposed by Lazard, Kontsevich and Ginzburg and Kapranov. More explicitly, we show that the cohomology of one moduli space is the graph complex decorated with the cohomology of the other, which in its turn generalizes Getzler's result for the genus zero moduli. We also show that a certain class of algebras over the chain operad of compactified moduli spaces has a natural struc…
We provide a general method for finding all natural operations on the Hochschild complex of E-algebras, where E is any algebraic structure encoded in a prop with multiplication, as for example the prop of Frobenius, commutative or A_infty-algebras. We show that the chain complex of all such natural operations is approximated by a certain chain complex of formal operations, for which we provide an explicit model that we can calculate in a number of cases. When E encodes the structure of open topological conformal field theories, we identify this last chain complex, up quasi-isomorphism, with th…
For any dg algebra $A$, not necessarily commutative, and a subset $S$ in $H(A)$, the homology of $A$, we construct its derived localisation $L_S(A)$ together with a map $A\to L_S(A)$, well-defined in the homotopy category of dg algebras, which possesses a universal property, similar to that of the ordinary localisation, but formulated in homotopy invariant terms. Even if $A$ is an ordinary ring, $L_S(A)$ may have non-trivial homology. Unlike the commutative case, the localisation functor does not commute, in general, with homology but instead there is a spectral sequence relating $H(L_S(A))$ a…
The purpose of this paper is to explain and to generalize, in a homotopical way, the result of Barannikov-Kontsevich and Manin which states that the underlying homology groups of some Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras carry a Frobenius manifold structure. To this extent, we first make the minimal model for the operad encoding BV-algebras explicit. Then we prove a homotopy transfer theorem for the associated notion of homotopy BV-algebra. The final result provides an extension of the action of the homology of the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen moduli space of genus 0 curves on the homology of some BV-algebr…
We analyze a functor from cyclic operads to chain complexes first considered by Getzler and Kapranov and also Markl. This functor is a generalization of the graph homology considered by Kontsevich, which was defined for the three operads Comm, Assoc, and Lie. More specifically we show that these chain complexes have a rich algebraic structure in the form of families of operations defined by fusion and fission. These operations fit together to form uncountably many Lie-infinity and co-Lie-infinity structures. In particular, the chain complexes have a bracket and cobracket which are compatible i…
We study the abelianization of Kontsevich's Lie algebra associated with the Lie operad and some related problems. Calculating the abelianization is a long-standing unsolved problem, which is important in at least two different contexts: constructing cohomology classes in $H^k(\mathrm{Out}(F_r);\mathbb Q)$ and related groups as well as studying the higher order Johnson homomorphism of surfaces with boundary. The abelianization carries a grading by "rank," with previous work of Morita and Conant-Kassabov-Vogtmann computing it up to rank $2$. This paper presents a partial computation of the rank …
In this work, we study the deformation theory of $\cE_n$-rings and the $\cE_n$ analogue of the tangent complex, or topological André-Quillen cohomology. We prove a generalization of a conjecture of Kontsevich, that there is a fiber sequence $A[n-1] \ra T_A\ra \hh^*_{\cE_{n}}(A)[n]$, relating the $\cE_n$-tangent complex and $\cE_n$-Hochschild cohomology of an $\cE_n$-ring $A$. We give two proofs: The first is direct, reducing the problem to certain stable splittings of configuration spaces of punctured Euclidean spaces; the second is more conceptual, where we identify the sequence as the Lie al…
Proofs of Tsygan's formality conjectures for chains would unlock important algebraic tools which might lead to new generalizations of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem and the Riemann-Roch-Hirzebruch theorem. Despite this pivotal role in the traditional investigations and the efforts of various people the most general version of Tsygan's formality conjecture has not yet been proven. In my thesis I propose Fedosov resolutions for the Hochschild cohomological and homological complexes of the algebra of functions on an arbitrary smooth manifold. Using these resolutions together with Kontsevi…
