We compute the Hausdorff dimension of limit sets generated by 3-dimensional self-affine mappings with diagonal matrices of the form A_{ijk}=Diag(a_{ijk}, b_{ij}, c_{i}), where 0<a_{ijk}\le b_{ij}\le c_i<1. By doing so we show that the variational principle for the dimension holds for this class.
The Hausdorff dimension of general Sierpinski carpets, [4] and [20], and the generalization on Lalley-Gatzouras carpets, [10], are today well known results, the formulas being obtain via the variational principle for the dimension. We call the multidimensional versions of these carpets Sierpinski sponges and self-affine sponges, respectively,. In this paper we show that the Hausdorff dimension of self-affine sponges, defined in R3, is a Lipschitz continuous function at Sierpinski sponges.
We construct a self-affine sponge in $\mathbb R^3$ whose dynamical dimension, i.e. the supremum of the Hausdorff dimensions of its invariant measures, is strictly less than its Hausdorff dimension. This resolves a long-standing open problem in the dimension theory of dynamical systems, namely whether every expanding repeller has an ergodic invariant measure of full Hausdorff dimension. More generally we compute the Hausdorff and dynamical dimensions of a large class of self-affine sponges, a problem that previous techniques could only solve in two dimensions. The Hausdorff and dynamical dimens…
We highlight a connection between Diophantine approximation and the lower Assouad dimension by using information about the latter to show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of badly approximable points that lie in certain non-conformal fractals, known as self-affine sponges, is bounded below by the dynamical dimension of these fractals. In particular, for self-affine sponges with equal Hausdorff and dynamical dimensions, the set of badly approximable points has full Hausdorff dimension in the sponge. Our results, which are the first to advance beyond the conformal setting, encompass both …
We compute the Hausdorff dimension of any random statistically self-affine Sierpinski sponge $K\subset \mathbb{R}^k$ ($k\ge 2$) obtained by using some percolation process in $[0,1]^k$. To do so, we first exhibit a Ledrappier-Young type formula for the Hausdorff dimensions of statistically self-affine measures supported on $K$. This formula presents a new feature compared to its deterministic or random dynamical version. Then, we establish a variational principle expressing $\dim_H K$ as the supremum of the Hausdorff dimensions of statistically self-affine measures supported on $K$, and show th…
The measure of the full dimension for a general Sierpiński carpet is studied. In the first part of this study, we give a criterion for the measure of the full Hausdorff dimension of a Sierpiński carpet. Meanwhile, it is the conditional equilibrium measure of zero potential with respect to some Gibbs measure $ν_α$ of matrix-valued potential $α\mathbf{N}$ (defined later). On one hand, this investigation extends the result of [17] without condition \textbf{(H)}. On the other hand, it provides a checkable condition to ensure the existence and uniqueness of the measure of the full Hausdorff dimensi…

We show that the centred Hausdorff measure, $C^{s}(S),$ with $s=\frac{\log3}{\log2},$ of the Sierpinski gasket $S$, is $C$-computable (continuous-computable), in the sense that its value is the solution of the minimisation problem of a continuous function on a compact domain. We also show that $C^{s}(S)$ is $A$-computable (algorithmic-computable) in the sense that there is an algorithm that converges to $C^{s}(S),$ with error bounds tending to zero. Using this algorithm and bounds we show that $C^{s}(S)\sim1.0049,$ and we establish a conjecture for the value of the spherical Hausdorff $s$-meas…
We prove the existence of rational maps whose Julia sets are Sierpiński carpets having positive area. Such rational maps can be constructed such that they either contain a Cremer fixed point, a Siegel disk or are infinitely renormalizable. We also construct some Sierpiński carpet Julia sets with zero area but with Hausdorff dimension two. Moreover, for any given number $s\in(1,2)$, we prove the existence of Sierpiński carpet Julia sets having Hausdorff dimension exactly $s$.
We study the Hausdorff dimension and measures of full Hausdorff dimension for a compact invariant set of an expanding nonconformal map on the torus given by an integer-valued diagonal matrix. The Hausdorff dimension of a "general Sierpinski carpet" was found by McMullen and Bedford and the uniqueness of the measure of full Hausdorff dimension in some cases was proved by Kenyon and Peres. We extend these results by using compensation functions to study a general Sierpinski carpet represented by a shift of finite type. We give some conditions under which a general Sierpinski carpet has a unique …
Let $(E, ρ)$ be a metric space and let $h_E\left( δ\right)$ be the cardinality of the set of $δ$-connected components of $E$. In literature, in case of that $E$ is a self-conformal set satisfying the open set condition or $E$ is a self-affine Sierpiński sponge, necessary and sufficient condition is given for the validity of the relation $ h_E(δ)\asymp δ^{-\dim_B E}, \text{ when }δ\to 0. $ In this paper, we generalize the above result to self-affine sponges of Lalley-Gatzouras type; actually in this case, we show that there exists a Bernoulli measure $μ$ such that for any cylinder $R$, it holds…
Let $m_1 \geq m_2 \geq 2$ be integers. We consider subsets of the product symbolic sequence space $(\{0,\cdots,m_1-1\} \times \{0,\cdots,m_2-1\})^{\mathbb{N}^*}$ that are invariant under the action of the semigroup of multiplicative integers. These sets are defined following Kenyon, Peres and Solomyak and using a fixed integer $q \geq 2$. We compute the Hausdorff and Minkowski dimensions of the projection of these sets onto an affine grid of the unit square. The proof of our Hausdorff dimension formula proceeds via a variational principle over some class of Borel probability measures on the st…
We show that non-trivial $\times N$-invariant sets in $[0,1]^d$, such as the Sierpiński carpet and the Sierpiński sponge, are tube-null, that is, they can be covered by a union of tubular neighbourhoods of lines of arbitrarily small total volume. This introduces a new class of tube-null sets of dimension strictly between $d-1$ and $d$. We utilize ergodic-theoretic methods to decompose the set into finitely many parts, each of which projects onto a set of Hausdorff dimension less than $1$ in some direction. We also discuss coverings by tubes for other self-similar sets, and present various appl…
The connected part of a metric space $E$ is defined to be the union of non-trivial connected components of $E$. We proved that for a class of self-affine sets called slicing self-affine sponges, the connected part of $E$ either coincides with $E$, or is essentially contained in the attractor of a proper sub-IFS of an iteration of the original IFS.This generalize an early result of Huang and Rao [L. Y. Huang, H. Rao. \emph{A dimension drop phenomenon of fractal cubes}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. \textbf{497} (2021), no. 2] on a class of self-similar sets called fractal cubes. Moreover, we show that t…
Using a similar random process to the one which yields the fractal percolation sets, starting from the deterministic Menger sponge we get the random Menger sponge. We examine its orthogonal projections from the point of Hausdorff dimension, Lebesgue measure and existence of interior points. We obtain these results as special cases of our theorems stated for random self-similar IFSs. These are obatained by a random process similar to the fractal percolation, applied for the cylinder sets of a deterministic self-similar IFS, as in arXiv:1212.1345. In this paper the associated deterministic IFS o…
In this work we are interested in the self--affine fractals studied by Gatzouras and Lalley and by the author which generalize the famous general Sierpinski carpets studied by Bedford and McMullen. We give a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of sets which are randomly generated using a finite number of self-affine transformations each one generating a fractal set as mentioned before, with some technical hypotheses. The choice of the transformation is random according to a Bernoulli measure. The formula is given in terms of the variational principle for the dimension.
We consider the multifractal analysis for Birkhoff averages of continuous potentials on a self-affine Sierpiński sponge. In particular, we give a variational principal for the packing dimension of the level sets. Furthermore, we prove that the packing spectrum is concave and continuous. We give a sufficient condition for the packing spectrum to be real analytic, but show that for general Hölder continuous potentials, this need not be the case. We also give a precise criterion for when the packing spectrum attains the full packing dimension of the repeller. Again, we present an example showing …
In this paper, we introduce the notion of asymptotic self-similar sets on general doubling metric spaces by extending the notion of self-similar sets, and determine their Hausdorff dimensions, which gives an extension of Balogh and Rohner 's result. This is carried out by introducing the notions of almost similarity maps and asymptotic similarity systems. These notions have an advantage of making geometric constructions possible. Actually, as an application, we determined the Hausdorff dimension of general Sierpinski gaskets on complete surfaces constructed by a geometric way in a natural mann…
We achieve on self-affine Sierpinski carpets the multifractal analysis of the Birkhoff averages of potentials satisfying a Dini condition. Given such a potential, the corresponding Hausdorff spectrum cannot be deduced from that of the associated Gibbs measure by a simple transformation. Indeed, these spectra are respectively obtained as the Legendre transform of two distinct concave differentiable functions that cannot be deduced from one another by a dilation and a translation. This situation is in contrast with what is observed in the familiar self-similar case. Our results are presented in …
This paper presents a general procedure based on using the method of types to calculate the box dimension of sets. The approach unifies and simplifies multiple box counting arguments. In particular, we use it to generalize the formula for the box dimension of self-affine carpets of Gatzouras-Lalley and of Barański type to their higher dimensional sponge analogues. In addition to a closed form, we also obtain a variational formula which resembles the Ledrappier-Young formula for Hausdorff dimension.
In this paper we obtain the rates of convergence of the algorithms given in [13] and [14] for an automatic computation of the centered Hausdorff and packing measures of a totally disconnected self-similar set. We evaluate these rates empirically through the numerical analysis of three standard classes of self-similar sets, namely, the families of Cantor type sets in the real line and the plane and the class of Sierpinski gaskets. For these three classes and for small contraction ratios, sharp bounds for the exact values of the corresponding measures are obtained and it is shown how these bound…
Hausdorff dimensions of level sets of generic continuous functions defined on fractals can give information about the "thickness/narrow cross-sections'' of a "network" corresponding to a fractal set, $F$. This lead to the definition of the topological Hausdorff dimension of fractals. In this paper we continue our study of the level sets of generic $1$-Hölder-$α$ functions. While in a previous paper we gave the initial definitions and established some properties of these generic level sets, in this paper we provide numerical estimates in the case of the Sierpiński triangle. These calculations g…
We investigate the Hölder geometry of curves generated by iterated function systems (IFS) in a complete metric space. A theorem of Hata from 1985 asserts that every connected attractor of an IFS is locally connected and path-connected. We give a quantitative strengthening of Hata's theorem. First we prove that every connected attractor of an IFS is $(1/s)$-Hölder path-connected, where $s$ is the similarity dimension of the IFS. Then we show that every connected attractor of an IFS is parameterized by a $(1/α)$-Hölder curve for all $α>s$. At the endpoint, $α=s$, a theorem of Remes from 1998 alr…
We study the Hausdorff dimension of self-similar sets and measures on the line. We show that if the dimension is smaller than the minimum of 1 and the similarity dimension, then at small scales there are super-exponentially close cylinders. This is a step towards the folklore conjecture that such a drop in dimension is explained only by exact overlaps, and confirms the conjecture in cases where the contraction parameters are algebraic. It also gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Furstenberg, showing that the projections of the "1-dimensional Sierpinski gasket" in irrational directio…
