In this paper we establish some parabolicity criteria for maximal surfaces immersed into a Lorentzian product space of the form $M^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$, where $M^2$ is a connected Riemannian surface with non-negative Gaussian curvature and $M^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$ is endowed with the Lorentzian product metric $<,>=<,>_M-dt^2$. In particular, and as an application of our main result, we deduce that every maximal graph over a starlike domain $Ω\subseteq M$ is parabolic. This allows us to give an alternative proof of the non-parametric version of the Calabi-Bernstein result for entire maximal graphs in $M^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$.
If the Lorentzian norm on a maximal surface in the 3-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $R_1^3$ is positive and proper, then the surface is relative parabolic. As a consequence, entire maximal graphs with a closed set of isolated singularities are relative parabolic. Furthermore, maximal and minimal graphs over closed starlike domains in $R_1^3$ and $R^3,$ respectively, are relative parabolic.
Let $(M,ω,J,g)$ be a non-compact almost Kähler manifold. In this paper we provide various criteria that assure that $ω^k$ induces a non trivial class in the reduced $L^p$ maximal/minimal cohomology of $(M,g)$. Furthermore in the last part we explore some topological applications of our results.
The 2-parameter family of certain homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds which includes Minkowski 3-space and anti-de Sitter 3-space is considered. Each homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifold in the 2-parameter family has a solvable Lie group structure with left invariant metric. A generalized integral representation formula which is the unification of representation formulas for maximal spacelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds is obtained. The normal Gauß map of maximal spacelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds and its harmonicity are discussed.
In this paper we introduce a local approach for the study of maximal surfaces immersed into a Lorentzian product space of the form $M^2\times R_1$, where $M^2$ is a connected Riemannian surface and $M^2\times R_1$ is endowed with the product Lorentzian metric. Specifically, we establish a local integral inequality for the squared norm of the second fundamental form of the surface, which allows us to derive an alternative proof of our Calabi-Bernstein theorem given in \cite{AA}.
In the lorentzian product $\Bbb G^n\times\Bbb R_1,$ we give a comparison between the $f$-volume of an entire $f$-maximal graph and the $f$-volume of the hyperbolic $H_r^+$ under the assumption that the gradient of the function defining the graph is bounded away from 1. As a consequence, we obtain a Bernstein type theorem for $f$-maximal graphs in $\Bbb G^n\times\Bbb R_1.$ Without the condition on the gradient of the function, an example of non-planar entire $f$-maximal graph in the Lorentzian product $\Bbb G^n\times\Bbb R_1$ is given. This example shows that the assumption on the gradient of t…
In the first part of this paper, we give a global description of simply connected maximal Lorentzian surfaces whose group of isometries is of dimension 1 (i.e. with a complete Killing field), in terms of a 1-dimensional generally non-Hausdorff manifold (the space of Killing orbits) and a smooth function defined there. In the second part, we study the completeness of such surfaces and prove in particular that under the hypothesis of bounded curvature, completeness is equivalent to null completeness. We also give completeness criterions involving the topological structure of the space of Killing…
In Lorentz-Minkowski space, we prove that the conjugate surface of a maximal graph over a convex domain is also a graph. We provide three proofs of this result that show a suitable correspondence between maximal surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski space and minimal surfaces in Euclidean space.
We study the geometry of stable maximal hypersurfaces in a variety of spacetimes satisfying various physically relevant curvature assumptions, for instance the Timelike Convergence Condition (TCC). We characterize stability when the target space has constant sectional curvature as well as give sufficient conditions on the geometry of the ambient spacetime (e.g., the validity of TCC) to ensure stability. Some rigidity results and height estimates are also proven in GRW spacetimes. In the last part of the paper we consider $k$-stability of spacelike hypersurfaces, a concept related to mean curva…
We prove that maximal annuli in $\mathbb{L}^{3}$ bounded by circles, straight lines or cone points in a pair of parallel spacelike planes are part of either a Lorentzian catenoid or a Lorentzian Riemann's example. We show that under the same boundary condition, the same conclusion holds even when the maximal annuli have a planar end. Moreover, we extend Shiffman's convexity result to maximal annuli but by using Perron's method we construct a maximal annulus with a planar end where Shiffman type result fails.
We find a spinorial representation of a Riemannian or Lorentzian surface in a Lorentzian homogeneous space of dimension $3.$ We in particular obtain a representation theorem for surfaces in the $\mathbb{L}(κ,τ)$ spaces. We then recover the Calabi correspondence between minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and maximal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}_1^3$, and obtain a new Lawson type correspondence between CMC surfaces in $\mathbb{R}_1^3$ and in the 3-dimensional pseudo-hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}_1^{3}.$
In this paper we define and analyze singularities of discrete linear Weingarten surfaces with Weierstrass-type representations in $3$-dimensional Riemannian and Lorentzian spaceforms. In particular, we discuss singularities of discrete surfaces with non-zero constant Gaussian curvature, and parallel surfaces of discrete minimal and maximal surfaces, and discrete constant mean curvature $1$ surfaces in de Sitter $3$-space, including comparisons with different previously known definitions of such singularities.
A maximal surface $\sb$ with isolated singularities in a complete flat Lorentzian 3-manifold $\N$ is said to be entire if it lifts to a (periodic) entire multigraph $\tilde{\sb}$ in $ł^3.$ In addition, $\sb$ is called of finite type if it has finite topology, finitely many singular points and $\tilde{\sb}$ is finitely sheeted. Complete and proper maximal immersions with isolated singularities in $\N$ are entire, and entire embedded maximal surfaces in $\N$ with a finite number of singularities are of finite type. We classify complete flat Lorentzian 3-manifolds carrying entire maximal surfaces…
In this paper we generalize in Lorentz-Minkowski space $ł^3$ the two-dimensional analogue of the catenary of Euclidean space. We solve the Dirichlet problem for bounded mean convex domains and spacelike boundary data that have a spacelike extension to the domain. We also classify all singular maximal surfaces of $ł^3$ invariant by a uniparametric group of translations and rotations.
In this paper we establish new Calabi-Bernstein results for maximal surfaces immersed into a Lorentzian product space of the form $M^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$, where $M^2$ is a connected Riemannian surface and $M^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$ is endowed with the Lorentzian metric $<,>=<,>_{M}-dt^2$. In particular, when $M$ is a Riemannian surface with non-negative Gaussian curvature $K_M$, we prove that any complete maximal surface in $M^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$ must be totally geodesic. Besides, if $M$ is non-flat we conclude that it must be a slice $M\times\{t_0\}$, $t_0\in\mathbb{R}$ (here by "complete" it i…
We study the neutral Kähler metric on the space of time-like lines in Lorentzian ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$, which we identify with the total space of the tangent bundle to the hyperbolic plane. We find all of the infinitesimal isometries of this metric, as well as the geodesics, and interpret them in terms of the Lorentzian metric on ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$. In addition, we give a new characterisation of Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean ${\Bbb{E}}^3$ and Lorentzian ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$ as the vanishing of the scalar curvature of the associated normal congruence in the space of oriented lines. Finally, we relate our …
We study the simply connected inextendable Lorentzian surfaces admitting a Killing vector field. We construct a natural family of such surfaces, that we call "universal extensions". They are characterized by a condition of symmetry, the "reflexivity", and a by a rather weak completeness assumption, the absence of "saddles at infinity". Considering these surfaces as model spaces, we study their minimal quotients, divisible open sets and conjugate points. We show uniformisation results (by an open subset of one of these universal extensions, which is uniquely determined) in the following cases: …
We consider Lorentzian manifolds with parallel light-like vector field V. Being parallel and light-like, the orthogonal complement of V induces a codimension one foliation. Assuming compactness of the leaves and non-negative Ricci curvature on the leaves it is known that the first Betti number is bounded by the dimension of the manifold or the leaves if the manifold is compact or non-compact, respectively. We prove in the case of the maximality of the first Betti number that every such Lorentzian manifold is - up to finite cover - diffeomorphic to the torus (in the compact case) or the product…
We classify (spacelike or timelike) surfaces of revolution with zero $f$-mean curvature in $\Bbb G^2\times\Bbb R_1,$ the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space $\Bbb R^3_1$ endowed with the Gaussian-Euclidean density $e^{-f(x,y,z)}=\frac 1{2π}e^{-\frac{x^2+y^2}2}.$ It is proved that an $f$-maximal surface of revolution is either a horizontal plane or a spacelike $f$-Catenoid. For the timelike case, a timelike $f$-minimal surface is either a vertical plane containing $z$-axis, the cylinder $x^2+y^2=1,$ or a timelike $f$-Catenoid. Spacelike and timelike $f$-Catenoids are new examples of $f$-minimal surfaces …
We consider the Dirichlet boundary value problem for graphical maximal submanifolds inside Lorentzian type ambient spaces, and obtain general existence and uniqueness results which apply to any codimension.
I will discuss the emergence of lorentzian symmetric spaces as supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds. I will focus on supergravity theories in dimension 11, 10, and 6, and will concentrate on the determination of the so-called maximally supersymmetric backgrounds, for which a classification exists up to local isometry. A special class of lorentzian symmetric spaces also plays a role in the determination of parallelisable supergravity backgrounds in type II supergravity, which I will also summarise. (To appear in the proceedings of the programme "Geometry of pseudo-riemannian manifolds with a…
We show that the equivalence problem for three-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds requires at most the fifth covariant derivative of the curvature tensor. We prove that this bound is sharp by exhibiting a class of 3D Lorentzian manifolds which realize this bound. The analysis is based on a three-dimensional analogue of the Newman-Pen-rose formalism, and spinorial classification of the three-dimensional Ricci tensor.
The maximal analytic Schwarzschild spacetime is manifestly inextendible as a Lorentzian manifold with a twice continuously differentiable metric. In this paper, we prove the stronger statement that it is even inextendible as a Lorentzian manifold with a continuous metric. To capture the obstruction to continuous extensions through the curvature singularity, we introduce the notion of the spacelike diameter of a globally hyperbolic region of a Lorentzian manifold with a merely continuous metric and give a sufficient condition for the spacelike diameter to be finite. The investigation of low-reg…
The notion of maximal extension of a globally hyperbolic space-time arises from the notion of maximal solutions of the Cauchy problem associated to the Einstein's equations of general relativity. In 1969 Choquet-Bruhat and Geroch proved that if the Cauchy problem has a local solution, this solution has a unique maximal extension. Since the causal structure of a space-time is invariant under conformal changes of metrics we may generalize this notion of maximality to the conformal setting. In this article we focus on conformally flat space-times of dimension greater or equal than 3. In this case…
In this paper we deal with the uniqueness of the Lorentzian helicoid and Enneper's surface among properly embedded maximal surfaces with lightlike boundary of mirror symmetry in the Lorentz-Minkowski space L3.
We show that maximal causal curves for a Lipschitz continuous Lorentzian metric admit a $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$-parametrization and that they solve the geodesic equation in the sense of Filippov in this parametrization. Our proof shows that maximal causal curves are either everywhere lightlike or everywhere timelike. Furthermore, the proof demonstrates that maximal causal curves for an $α$-Hölder continuous Lorentzian metric admit a $\mathcal{C}^{1,\fracα{4}}$-parametrization.
The concept of closed trapped surface is of paramount importance in General Relativity and other gravitational theories. However, it is a purely geometrical object. With the aim of bringing this concept to closer attention by the mathematical community, I introduce the generalized idea of trapped submanifold by using the causal character of the mean curvature vector. Trapped surfaces can thus be easily seen to be generalizations, possible in semi-Riemannian geometry, of the standard concepts of minimal surfaces, maximal hypersurfaces, geodesics, and the like. Selected applications are mentione…
We show that a complete embedded maximal surface in the 3-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $L^3$ with a finite number of singularities is, up to a Lorentzian isometry, an entire graph over any spacelike plane asymptotic to a vertical half catenoid or a horizontal plane and with conelike singular points. We study the space $G_n$ of entire maximal graphs over $\{x_3=0\}$ in $L^3$ with $n+1 \geq 2$ conelike singularities and vertical limit normal vector at infinity. We show that $G_n$ is a real analytic manifold of dimension $3n+4,$ and the coordinates are given by the position of the singular…

In this note we prove the following three algebraic facts which have applications in the theory of holonomy groups and homogeneous spaces: Any irreducibly acting connected subgroup $G \subset Gl(n,\rr)$ is closed. Moreover, if $G$ admits an invariant bilinear form of Lorentzian signature, $G$ is maximal, i.e. it is conjugated to $SO(1,n-1)_0$. Finally we calculate the vector space of $G$-invariant symmetric bilinear forms, show that it is at most 3-dimensional, and determine the maximal stabilizers for each dimension.
We generalize a Bernstein-type result due to Albujer and Alías, for maximal surfaces in a curved Lorentzian product 3-manifold of the form $Σ_1\times \mathbb{R}$, to higher dimension and codimension. We consider $M$ a complete spacelike graphic submanifold with parallel mean curvature, defined by a map $f: Σ_1\to Σ_2$ between two Riemannian manifolds $(Σ_1^m, g_1)$ and $(Σ^n_2, g_2)$ of sectional curvatures $K_1$ and $K_2$, respectively. We take on $Σ_1\times Σ_2$ the pseudo-Riemannian product metric $g_1-g_2$. Under the curvature conditions, $\mathrm{Ricci}_1 \geq 0$ and $K_1\geq K_2$, we pro…
We study two inverse problems on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$. The problems are: 1. Passive observations in spacetime: Consider observations in a neighborhood $V\subset M$ of a time-like geodesic $μ$. Under natural causality conditions, we reconstruct the conformal type of the unknown open, relatively compact set $W\subset M$, when we are given $V$, the conformal class of $g|_V$, and the light observations sets $P_V(q)$ corresponding to all source points $q$ in $W$. The light observation set $P_V(q)$ is the intersection of $V$ and the light-cone emanating from the point $q…
The classifications of holonomy groups in Lorentzian and in Euclidean signature are quite different. A group of interest in Lorentzian signature in n dimensions is the maximal proper subgroup of the Lorentz group, SIM(n-2). Ricci-flat metrics with SIM(2) holonomy were constructed by Kerr and Goldberg, and a single four-dimensional example with a non-zero cosmological constant was exhibited by Ghanam and Thompson. Here we reduce the problem of finding the general $n$-dimensional Einstein metric of SIM(n-2) holonomy, with and without a cosmological constant, to solving a set linear generalised L…
In this article spacelike hypersurfaces immersed in twisted product spacetimes $I\times_f F$ with complete fiber are studied. Several conditions ensuring global hyperbolicity are presented, as well as a relation that needs to hold on each spacelike hypersurface in $I\times_f F$ for it to be a simple warped product. When the fiber is assumed to be closed (compact and without boundary) and the ambient spacetime has a suitable expanding behaviour, non-existence results for constant mean curvature hypersurfaces are obtained. Under the same hypothesis, a characterization of compact maximal hypersur…
We study the existence of surfaces with constant or prescribed Gauss curvature in certain Lorentzian spacetimes. We prove in particular that every (non-elementary) 3-dimensional maximal globally hyperbolic spatially compact spacetime with constant non-negative curvature is foliated by compact spacelike surfaces with constant Gauss curvature. In the constant negative curvature case, such a foliation exists outside the convex core. The existence of these foliations, together with a theorem of C. Gerhardt, yield several corollaries. For example, they allow to solve the Minkowski problem in the 3-…
