Theoretical investigation of thermodynamic properties of electrically modulated monolayer graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field B is presented. This work is aimed at determining the modulation induced effects on the thermodynamic properties of electrically modulated graphene. The results obtained are compared with those of the conventional 2DEG. The one-dimensional periodic potential due to electric modulation lifts the degeneracy of the Landau Levels and converts them into bands whose width oscillates as a function of B. We find Weiss type oscillations for small values of B and dHvA type oscillations at larger values values of $B$. We find that the modulation induced effects on the thermodynamic properties are enhanced and less damped with temperature in graphene compared with conventional 2DEG system.
We theoretically study electrically tunable magnetoplasmons in a monolayer of silicene or germanene. We derive the dynamical response function and take into account the effects of strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and of an external electric filed $E_z$ perpendicular to the plane of the buckled silicene/germanene. Employing the random-phase approximation we analyze the magnetoplasmon spectrum. The dispersion relation has the same form as in a two-dimensional electron gas with the cyclotron and plasma frequencies modified due to the SOC and the field $E_z$. In the absence of SOC and $E_z$, our r…
Radiative recombination of excitons dressed by the interactions with free charge carriers often occurs under simultaneous excitation of either electrons or holes to unbound states. This phenomenon, known as the electron recoil effect, manifests itself in pronounced, asymmetric spectral lineshapes of the resulting emission. We study the electron recoil effect experimentally in electrically-tunable monolayer semiconductors and derive it theoretically using both trion and Fermi-polaron pictures. Time-resolved analysis of the recoil lineshapes is employed to access transient, non-equilibrium state…
Exciton-polaritons are quasiparticles consisting of a linear superposition of photonic and excitonic states, offering potential for nonlinear optical devices. The excitonic component of the polariton provides a finite Coulomb scattering cross section, such that the different types of exciton found in organic materials (Frenkel) and inorganic materials (Wannier-Mott) produce polaritons with different interparticle interaction strength. A hybrid polariton state with distinct excitons provides a potential technological route towards in-situ control of nonlinear behaviour. Here we demonstrate a de…
We have investigated the electrical transport properties of Dirac electrons in a monolayer graphene sheet in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field that is modulated weakly and periodically along one direction. We find that the Landau levels broaden into bands and their width oscillates as a function of the band index and the magnetic field. We determine the $σ_{yy}$ component of the magnetoconductivity tensor for this system which is shown to exhibit Weiss oscillations. We also determine analytically the asymptotic expressions for $σ_{yy}$.We compare these results with recently obtained …
We have performed a detailed investigation of the electrical properties of a graphene monolayer which is modulated by a weak one dimensional periodic potential in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The periodic modulation broadens the Landau Levels into bands which oscillate with B. The electronic conduction in this system can take place through either diffusive scattering or collisional scattering off impurities. Both these contributions to electronic transport are taken into account in this work. In addition to the appearance of commensurability oscillations in both the collisio…
Optical quantum emitters are a key component of quantum devices for metrology and information processing. In particular, atomic defects in 2D materials can operate as optical quantum emitters that overcome current limitations of conventional bulk emitters, such as yielding a high single-photon generation rate and offering surface accessibility for excitation and photon extraction. Here we demonstrate electrically stimulated photon emission from individual point defects in a 2D material. Specifically, by bringing a metallic tip into close proximity to a discrete defect state in the band gap of …
Recent experimental evidence for the quantum spin Hall (QSH) state in monolayer WTe$_2$ has bridged two of the most active fields of condensed matter physics, 2D materials and topological physics. This 2D topological crystal also displays unconventional spin-torque and gate-tunable superconductivity. While the realization of QSH has demonstrated the nontrivial topology of the electron wavefunctions of monolayer WTe$_2$, the geometrical properties of the wavefunction, such as the Berry curvature, remain unstudied. On the other hand, it has been increasingly recognized that the Berry curvature p…
We demonstrate control over light-matter coupling at room temperature combining a field effect transistor (FET) with a tuneable optical microcavity. Our microcavity FET comprises a monolayer tungsten disulfide WS$_2$ semiconductor which was transferred onto a hexagonal boron nitride flake that acts as a dielectric spacer in the microcavity, and as an electric insulator in the FET. In our tuneable system, strong coupling between excitons in the monolayer WS$_2$ and cavity photons can be tuned by controlling the cavity length, which we achieved with excellent stability, allowing us to choose fro…
Electron valleys in transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers drive novel physics and allow designing multifunctional architectures for applications. We propose to manipulate the electron valleys in these systems for spin/valley filter and valve devices through band engineering. Instead of the magnetic proximity effect that has been extensively used in previous studies, in our strategy, the electron valleys are directly coupled to the spin-polarized states of the two-dimensional ferromagnets. We find that this coupling results in a valley-selective gap opening due to the spin-momentum locking…
In this work, we determine the effects of temperature on the magnetoplasmon spectrum of an electrically modulated graphene monolayer as well as the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The intra-Landau-band magnetoplasmon spectrum within the Self Consistent Field (SCF) approach is investigated for both the aforementioned systems. Results obtained not only exhibit Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillations but also commensurability oscillations (Weiss oscillations). These oscillations are periodic as a function of inverse magnetic field. We find that both the magnetic oscillations, SdH and Weiss, hav…
We investigate the electronic band structure and the proximity exchange effect in bilayer graphene on a family of ferromagnetic multilayers Cr$_2$X$_2$Te$_6$, X=Ge, Si, and Sn, with first principles methods. In each case the intrinsic electric field of the heterostructure induces an orbital gap on the order of 10 meV in the graphene bilayer. The proximity exchange is strongly band dependent. For example, in the case of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, the low-energy valence band of bilayer graphene has exchange splitting of 8 meV, while the low energy conduction band's splitting is 30 times less (0.3 meV).…
Electrical modulation and switching of photoluminescence (PL) have been demonstrated in pure deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal (DHFLC) material. The PL intensity increases and peak position shifts towards lower wavelength above a threshold voltage which continues up to a saturation voltage. This is attributed to the helix unwinding phenomenon in the DHFLC on the application of an electric field. Moreover, the PL intensity could be switched between high intensity (field-on) and low intensity (field-off) positions. These studies would add a new dimension to ferroelectric liquid crystal…
One of the most fundamental devices for electronics and optoelectronics is the PN junction, which provides the functional element of diodes, bipolar transistors, photodetectors, LEDs, and solar cells, among many other devices. In conventional PN junctions, the adjacent p- and n-type regions of a semiconductor are formed by chemical doping. Materials with ambipolar conductance, however, allow for PN junctions to be configured and modified by electrostatic gating. This electrical control enables a single device to have multiple functionalities. Here we report ambipolar monolayer WSe2 devices in …
We theoretically study a single-electron spin-valley qubit in an electrostatically defined quantum dot in a transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer, focusing on the example of MoS$_2$. Coupling of the qubit basis states for coherent control is challenging, as it requires a simultaneous flip of spin and valley. Here, we show that a tilted magnetic field together with a short-range impurity, such as a vacancy, a substitutional defect, or an adatom, can give rise to a coupling between the qubit basis states. This mechanism renders the in-plane $g$-factor nonzero, and allows to control the qubit…
We have investigated the electrical transport properties of Dirac electrons in a monolayer graphene sheet in the presence of both electric and magnetic modulations. The effects of the modulations on quantum transport when they are in phase and out of phase are considered. We present the energy spectrum and the bandwidth of the Dirac electrons in the presence of both the modulations. We determine the $σ_{yy}$ component of the magnetoconductivity tensor for this system which is shown to exhibit Weiss oscillations.Asymptotic expressions for $σ_{yy}$ are also calculated to better illustrate the ef…
We report on the modulation of tunneling resistance in MoS2 monolayers by nano-indentation using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The resistance between the conductive AFM tip and the bottom electrode separated by a monolayer MoS2 is reversibly reduced by up to 4 orders of magnitude, which is attributed to enhanced quantum tunneling when the monolayer is compressed by the tip force. Under the WKB approximation, the experimental data is quantitatively explained by using the metal-insulator-metal tunneling diode model. As an ideal tunneling medium, the defect-free, nanometer-thick MoS2 monolaye…
The canalization of terahertz surface plasmon polaritons using a modulated graphene monolayer is investigated for subwavelength imaging. An anisotropic surface conductivity formed by a set of parallel nanoribbons with alternating positive and negative imaginary conductivities is used to realize the canalization regime required for hyperlensing. The ribbons are narrow compared to the wavelength, and are created electronically by gating a graphene layer over a corrugated ground plane. Good quality canalization of surface plasmon polaritons is shown in the terahertz even in the presence of realis…
The capability to switch electrically between superconducting and insulating states of matter represents a novel paradigm in the state-of-the-art engineering of correlated electronic systems. An exciting possibility is to turn on superconductivity in a topologically non-trivial insulator, which provides a route to search for non-Abelian topological states. However, existing demonstrations of superconductor-insulator switches have involved only topologically trivial systems, and even those are rare due to the stringent requirement to tune the carrier density over a wide range. Here we report re…
A monolayer graphene exists in an environment where a uniform magnetic field interacts a spatially modulated magnetic field. The spatially modulated magnetic field could affect Landau levels due to a uniform magnetic field. The modulation effects on Landau levels are investigated through the Peierl's tight-binding model. The magneto-electronic properties are dominated by the period, the strength, and the direction of a spatially modulated magnetic field. Such a field could induce the growth in dimensionality, the change of energy dispersions, the destroy of state degeneracy, and the creation o…
Light-emitting diodes are of importance for lighting, displays, optical interconnects, logic and sensors. Hence the development of new systems that allow improvements in their efficiency, spectral properties, compactness and integrability could have significant ramifications. Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have recently emerged as interesting candidates for optoelectronic applications due to their unique optical properties. Electroluminescence has already been observed from monolayer MoS2 devices. However, the electroluminescence efficiency was low and the linewidth broad due both …
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures with flat electronic bands have recently emerged as a platform for realizing correlated and topological states with an extraordinary degree of control and tunability. In graphene-based moiré heterostructures, the correlated phase diagram and band topology depend strongly on the number of graphene layers, their relative stacking arrangement, and details of the external environment from the encapsulating crystals. Here, we report that the system of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) hosts a variety of correlated metallic and insulating states, as wel…
A monolayer of the high-$T_c$ superconductor FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ has been predicted to realize a topologically non-trivial state with helical edge modes at its boundary, providing a novel intrinsic system to search for topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes. Evidence in favor of a topological phase transition and helical edge modes has been identified in recent experiments \cite{Peng2019}. We propose to create Majorana zero modes by applying an in-plane magnetic field to the FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ monolayer and by tuning the local chemical potential via electric gating. Owing to the …
We draw motivation from recent experimental studies and present a comprehensive study of magnetothermoelectric transport in a graphene monolayer within the linear response regime. We employ the modified Kubo formalism developed for thermal transport in a magnetic field. Thermopower as well as thermal conductivity as a function of the gate voltage of a graphene monolayer in the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the graphene plane is determined for low magnetic fields (~1 Tesla) as well as high fields (~8 Tesla). We include the effects of screened charged impurities on thermal transp…
We present a theoretical study of the electronic structure of magnetically modulated graphene. We consider monolayer graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and a unidirectional weak magnetic modulation. The density of states and the bandwidth of the Dirac electrons in this system are determined. We have found magnetic Weiss oscillations in the bandwidth and the density of states. These oscillations are out of phase and larger in amplitude than the ones in the electrically modulated graphene. In addition, these oscillations are in phase and smaller in amplitude to those of m…
Heavy metal-based two-dimensional van der Waals materials have a large, coupled spin and valley Hall effect (SVHE) that has potential use in spintronics and valleytronics. Optical measurements of the SVHE have largely been performed below 30 K and understanding of the SVHE-induced spin/valley polarizations that can be electrically generated is limited. Here, we study the SVHE in monolayer p-type tungsten diselenide (WSe2). Kerr rotation (KR) measurements show the spatial distribution of the SVHE at different temperatures, its persistence up to 160 K, and that it can be electrically modulated v…
We present a theoretical study of Weiss oscillations in magnetoconductivity of bilayer graphene. Bilayer graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and a unidirectional weak electric modulation is considered. We determine the $σ_{yy}$ component of the magnetoconductivity tensor for this system which is shown to exhibit Weiss oscillations. We show that Weiss oscillations in the magnetoconductivity of bilayer graphene are enhanced and more robust with temperature compared to those in conventional two-dimensional electron gas systems whereas they are less robust with temperature co…
We demonstrate that the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of thin niobium films can be electrically modulated in a liquid-gated geometry device. Tc can be suppressed and enhanced by applying positive and negative gate voltage, respectively, in a reversible manner within a range of about 0.1 K. At a fixed temperature below Tc, we observed that the superconducting critical current can be modulated by gate voltage. This result suggests a possibility of an electrically-controlled switching device operating at or above liquid helium temperature, where superconductivity can be turned on or o…
We study the electronic transport properties of a monolayer graphene with a one-dimensional modulated height profile caused, for instance, by substrate ondulations. We show that the combined effect of the resulting strain fields induce modulated scalar and vector potentials that give rise to Weiss oscillations in the magnetoconductivity. We also find that similar effects can be obtained by applying a parallel magnetic field to the graphene-substrate interface. The parameters of an experimental set-up for a physical realization of these findings in graphene systems are discussed.
Twisted graphene bilayers develop highly localised states around AA-stacked regions for small twist angles. We show that interaction effects may induce either an antiferromagnetic (AF) and a ferromagnetic (F) polarization of said regions, depending on the electrical bias between layers. Remarkably, F-polarised AA regions under bias develop spiral magnetic ordering, with a relative $120^\circ$ misalignment between neighbouring regions due to a frustrated antiferromagnetic exchange. This remarkable spiral magnetism emerges naturally without the need of spin-orbit coupling, and competes with the …
The effect of magnetic modulation on thermodynamic properties of a graphene monolayer in presence of a constant perpendicular magnetic field is reported here. One-dimensional spatial electric or magnetic modulation lifts the degeneracy of the Landau levels and converts into bands and their band width oscillates with magnetic field leading to Weiss-type oscillation in the thermodynamic properties. The effect of magnetic modulation on thermodynamic properties of a graphene sheet is studied and then compared with electrically modulated graphene and magnetically modulated conventional two-dimensio…
The unique gate-voltage dependent optical properties of graphene make it a promising electrically-tunable plasmonic material. In this work, we proposed in-situ control of the polarization of nanoantennas by combining plasmonic structures with an electrostatically tunable graphene monolayer. The tunable polarizer is designed based on an asymmetric cross nanoantenna comprising two orthogonal metallic dipoles sharing the same feed gap. Graphene monolayer is deposited on a Si/SiO2 substrate, and inserted beneath the nanoantenna. Our modelling demonstrates that as the chemical potential is incremen…
We applied the Floquet scattering-matrix formalism to studying the electronic transport properties in a mesoscopic Dirac system. Using the method, we investigate theoretically quantum pumping driven by a series of time-periodic potentials in graphene monolayer both in the adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes. Our numerical results demonstrate that adding harmonic modulated potentials can break the time reversal symmetry when no voltage bias is applied to the graphene monolayer. Thus, when the system is pumped with proper dynamic parameters, these scatterers can produce a nonzero dc pumped curre…
The magnetic circular dichroism and the Faraday rotation are the fundamental phenomena of great practical importance arising from the breaking of the time reversal symmetry by a magnetic field. In most materials the strength and the sign of these effects can be only controlled by the field value and its orientation. Furthermore, the terahertz range is lacking materials having the ability to affect the polarisation state of the light in a non-reciprocal manner. Here we demonstrate, using broadband terahertz magneto-electro-optical spectroscopy, that in graphene both the magnetic circular dichro…
Multiferroic van der Waals (vdW) heterostrucutres offers an exciting route towards novel nanoelectronics and spintronics device technology. Here we investigate the electronic and transport properties of multiferroic vdW heterostructure composed of ferromagnetic FeCl$_2$ monolayer and ferroelectric Sc$_2$CO$_2$ monolayer using first-principles density functional theory and quantum transport simulations. We show that FeCl$_2$/Sc$_2$CO$_2$ heterostructure can be reversibly switched from semiconducting to half-metallic behavior by electrically modulating the ferroelectric polarization states of Sc…
We investigate the Goos-Hänchen-like shifts for Dirac fermions in transmission through a monolayer graphene barrier. The lateral shifts, as the functions of the barrier's width and the incidence angle, can be negative and positive in Klein tunneling and classical motion, respectively. Due to their relations to the transmission gap, the lateral shifts can be enhanced by the transmission resonances when the incidence angle is less than the critical angle for total reflection, while their magnitudes become only the order of Fermi wavelength when the incidence angle is larger than the critical ang…
Compared to monolayer graphene, electrons in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) have an additional layer degree of freedom, offering a platform for developing {\it layered spintronics} with the help of proximity-induced magnetism. Based on an effective phenomenological model, we systematically study the effect of this magnetism on the spin-dependent band structure near the Fermi energy and identify the magnetic phases induced in BLG by proximity with magnets. We show that spin polarization can develop in BLG due to this proximity effect. This spin polarization depends strongly on the layer …
The stacking and bending of graphene are trivial but extremely powerful agents of control over graphene's manifold physics. By changing the twist angle, one can drive the system over a plethora of exotic states via strong electron correlation, thanks to the moiré superlattice potentials, while the periodic or triaxial strains induce discretization of the band structure into Landau levels without the need for an external magnetic field. We fabricated a hybrid system comprising both the stacking and bending tuning knobs. We have grown the graphene monolayers by chemical vapor deposition, using $…
We study the electrical transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in presence of a constant perpendicular magnetic field $(B_0 \hat z)$ which is weakly modulated by ${\bf B_1} = B_1 \cos (q x) \hat z$, where $B_1 \ll B_0 $ and $q = 2 π/a $ with $a$ is the modulation period. We obtain the analytical expressions of the diffusive conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons. The conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons oscillate with different frequencies and produce beating patterns in the amplitude of the Weiss and Shubnikov-de…
The magnetoplasmon spectrum of a magnetically modulated two-dimensional electron gas (MM2DEG) is investigated. We derive the inter and intra Landau band magnetoplasmon spectrum within the self consistent field approach. The derivation is performed at zero temperature as well as at finite temperature. Results are presented for the inter and intra Landau band magnetoplasmon spectrum as a function of the inverse magnetic field. As a result of magnetic modulation, magnetic Weiss oscillations are found to occur in the magnetoplasmon spectrum. Furthermore, our finite temperature theory facilitates a…
We have derived the adsorption potential of $^4$He atoms on fluorographene (GF), on graphane and on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) by a recently developed ab initio method that incorporates the van der Waals interaction. The $^4$He monolayer on GF and on hBN is studied by state-of-the-art quantum simulations at T=0 K. With our adsorption potentials we find that in both cases the ground state of $^4$He monolayer is a fluid and not an ordered state with localized atoms as on graphite and on graphene. In the case of GF the present result is in qualitative agreement with the superfluid phase that w…
It has been shown that Bernal stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) in a uniform magnetic field demonstrates integer quantum Hall effect with a zero Landau-level anomaly \cite{Geimbilayer}. In this article we consider such system in a two dimensional periodic magnetic modulation with square lattice symmetry. It is shown algebraically that the resulting Hofstadter spectrum can be expressed in terms of the corresponding spectrum of monolayer graphene in a similar magnetic modulation. In the weak-field limit, using the tight-binding model, we also derive the Harper-Hofstadter equation for such BLG syste…
Optoelectronic excitations in monolayer MoS2 manifest from a hierarchy of electrically tunable, Coulombic free-carrier and excitonic many-body phenomena. Investigating the fundamental interactions underpinning these phenomena - critical to both many-body physics exploration and device applications - presents challenges, however, due to a complex balance of competing optoelectronic effects and interdependent properties. Here, optical detection of bound- and free-carrier photoexcitations is used to directly quantify carrier-induced changes of the quasiparticle band gap and exciton binding energi…
The ground state of a graphene sheet at charge neutrality in a perpendicular magnetic field remains enigmatic, with various experiments supporting canted antiferromagnetic, bond ordered, and even charge density wave phases. A promising avenue to elucidating the nature of this state is to sandwich it between regions of different filling factors, and study spin-dependent tunneling across the edge modes at the interfaces. Here we report on tunnel transport through a $ν=0$ region in a graphite-gated, hexagonal boron nitride ($hBN$) encapsulated monolayer graphene device, with the $ν=0$ strip sandw…
The valleys in hexagonal two-dimensional systems with broken inversion symmetry carry an intrinsic orbital magnetic moment. Despite this, such systems possess zero net magnetization unless additional symmetries are broken, since the contributions from both valleys cancel. A nonzero net magnetization can be induced through applying both uniaxial strain to break the rotational symmetry of the lattice and an in-plane electric field to break time-reversal symmetry owing to the resulting current. This creates a magnetoelectric effect whose strength is characterized by a magnetoelectric susceptibili…
We apply a circularly and linearly polarized terahertz field on a monolayer of graphene taking into account spin-orbit interactions of the intrinsic and Rashba type. It turns out that the field can not only be used to induce a gap in the energy spectrum, but also to close an existing gap due to the different reaction of the spin components on circularly polarized light. Signatures of spin-orbit coupling on the density of states of the driven system can be observed even for energies where the static density of states is independent of spin-orbit interactions. Furthermore it is shown that the ti…
Two-dimensional (2D) MoSi$_2$N$_4$ monolayer is an emerging class of air-stable 2D semiconductor possessing exceptional electrical and mechanical properties. Despite intensive recent research efforts devoted to uncover the material properties of MoSi$_2$N$_4$, the physics of electrical contacts to MoSi$_2$N$_4$ remains largely unexplored thus far. In this work, we study the van der Waals heterostructures composed of MoSi$_2$N$_4$ contacted by graphene and NbS$_2$ monolayers using first-principle density functional theory calculations. We show that the MoSi$_2$N$_4$/NbS$_2$ contact exhibits an …
The interest in two-dimensional and layered materials continues to expand, driven by the compelling properties of individual atomic layers that can be stacked and/or twisted into synthetic heterostructures. The plethora of electronic properties as well as the emergence of many different quasiparticles, including plasmons, polaritons, trions and excitons with large, tunable binding energies that all can be controlled and modulated through electrical means has given rise to many device applications. In addition, these materials exhibit both room-temperature spin and valley polarization, magnetis…
