We present a theoretical study of Weiss oscillations in magnetoconductivity of bilayer graphene. Bilayer graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and a unidirectional weak electric modulation is considered. We determine the $σ_{yy}$ component of the magnetoconductivity tensor for this system which is shown to exhibit Weiss oscillations. We show that Weiss oscillations in the magnetoconductivity of bilayer graphene are enhanced and more robust with temperature compared to those in conventional two-dimensional electron gas systems whereas they are less robust with temperature compared to monolayer graphene. In addition, we also find phase differences of $π$ and $2π$ in the magnetoconductivity oscillations compared to monolayer graphene and conventional 2DEG system which arises due to the chiral nature of quasiparticles in graphene.
We have investigated the electrical transport properties of Dirac electrons in a monolayer graphene sheet in the presence of both electric and magnetic modulations. The effects of the modulations on quantum transport when they are in phase and out of phase are considered. We present the energy spectrum and the bandwidth of the Dirac electrons in the presence of both the modulations. We determine the $σ_{yy}$ component of the magnetoconductivity tensor for this system which is shown to exhibit Weiss oscillations.Asymptotic expressions for $σ_{yy}$ are also calculated to better illustrate the ef…
We study the positive longitudinal magnetoconductivity (LMC) and planar Hall effect as emergent effects of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals, following a recent-developed theory by integrating the Landau quantization with Boltzmann equation. It is found that, in the weak magnetic field regime, the LMC and planar Hall conductivity (PHC) obey $\cos^{6}θ$ and $\cos^{5}θ\sin θ$ dependences on the angle $θ$ between the magnetic and electric fields. For higher magnetic fields, the LMC and PHC cross over to $\cos^{2}θ$ and $\cosθ\sinθ$ dependences, respectively. Interestingly, the PHC could exhib…
We study the electronic transport properties of a monolayer graphene with a one-dimensional modulated height profile caused, for instance, by substrate ondulations. We show that the combined effect of the resulting strain fields induce modulated scalar and vector potentials that give rise to Weiss oscillations in the magnetoconductivity. We also find that similar effects can be obtained by applying a parallel magnetic field to the graphene-substrate interface. The parameters of an experimental set-up for a physical realization of these findings in graphene systems are discussed.
We present a theoretical study of the electronic structure of modulated graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The density of states and the bandwidth for the Dirac electrons in this system are determined. The appearance of unusual Weiss oscillations in the bandwidth and density of states is the main focus of this work.
We explore the transport properties of a periodically modulated $α$-$\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The effect of the Berry phase on electrical conductivity oscillation, so-called Weiss oscillation, caused by the modulation induced non-zero drift velocity of charge carriers is investigated. Employing linear response theory within the low temperature regime, we analyze Weiss oscillation as a function of the external magnetic field for both electrically and magnetically modulated $α$-$\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice numerically as well as analytically. The Berry…
We study the electrical transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in presence of a constant perpendicular magnetic field $(B_0 \hat z)$ which is weakly modulated by ${\bf B_1} = B_1 \cos (q x) \hat z$, where $B_1 \ll B_0 $ and $q = 2 π/a $ with $a$ is the modulation period. We obtain the analytical expressions of the diffusive conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons. The conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons oscillate with different frequencies and produce beating patterns in the amplitude of the Weiss and Shubnikov-de…
The magneto-conductivity of a single graphene layer where the electrons are described by the Dirac Hamiltonian weakly modulated by a periodic potential is calculated. It is shown that Weiss oscillations periodic in the inverse magnetic field appear, that are more pronounced and less damped with the increment of temperature as compared with the same oscillations in a typical two-dimensional electron system with a standard parabolic energy spectrum.
The effect of magnetic modulation on thermodynamic properties of a graphene monolayer in presence of a constant perpendicular magnetic field is reported here. One-dimensional spatial electric or magnetic modulation lifts the degeneracy of the Landau levels and converts into bands and their band width oscillates with magnetic field leading to Weiss-type oscillation in the thermodynamic properties. The effect of magnetic modulation on thermodynamic properties of a graphene sheet is studied and then compared with electrically modulated graphene and magnetically modulated conventional two-dimensio…
We have investigated the electrical transport properties of Dirac electrons in a monolayer graphene sheet in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field that is modulated weakly and periodically along one direction. We find that the Landau levels broaden into bands and their width oscillates as a function of the band index and the magnetic field. We determine the $σ_{yy}$ component of the magnetoconductivity tensor for this system which is shown to exhibit Weiss oscillations. We also determine analytically the asymptotic expressions for $σ_{yy}$.We compare these results with recently obtained …
In this work, we determine the effects of temperature on the magnetoplasmon spectrum of an electrically modulated graphene monolayer as well as the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The intra-Landau-band magnetoplasmon spectrum within the Self Consistent Field (SCF) approach is investigated for both the aforementioned systems. Results obtained not only exhibit Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillations but also commensurability oscillations (Weiss oscillations). These oscillations are periodic as a function of inverse magnetic field. We find that both the magnetic oscillations, SdH and Weiss, hav…
In this work we present a theoretical model to study the effect of microwave radiation on Weiss oscillations. In our proposal Weiss oscillations, produced by an spatial periodic potential, are modulated by microwave radiation due to an interference effect between both, space and time-dependent, potentials. The final magnetoresistance depends mainly on the spatial period of the spatial potential and the frequency of radiation. Depending on the values of these parameters, we predict that Weiss oscillations can reach zero resistance states. On the other hand, these dissipationless transport state…
The magnetoplasmon spectrum of a magnetically modulated two-dimensional electron gas (MM2DEG) is investigated. We derive the inter and intra Landau band magnetoplasmon spectrum within the self consistent field approach. The derivation is performed at zero temperature as well as at finite temperature. Results are presented for the inter and intra Landau band magnetoplasmon spectrum as a function of the inverse magnetic field. As a result of magnetic modulation, magnetic Weiss oscillations are found to occur in the magnetoplasmon spectrum. Furthermore, our finite temperature theory facilitates a…
We present the collective excitations spectrum (magnetoplasmon spectrum) of Dirac electrons in a weakly modulated single graphene layer in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. We consider electric modulation in one-dimension and the magnetic field applied perpendicular to graphene. We derive analytical results for the intra-Landau band plasmon spectrum within the self-consistent-field approach. We find Weiss oscillations in the magnetoplasmon spectrum which is the primary focus of this work. Results are presented for the intra-Landau band magnetoplasmon spectrum as a function of inverse ma…
We present a theoretical study of the electronic structure of magnetically modulated graphene. We consider monolayer graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and a unidirectional weak magnetic modulation. The density of states and the bandwidth of the Dirac electrons in this system are determined. We have found magnetic Weiss oscillations in the bandwidth and the density of states. These oscillations are out of phase and larger in amplitude than the ones in the electrically modulated graphene. In addition, these oscillations are in phase and smaller in amplitude to those of m…
Polymorph of 8-Pmmn borophene exhibits anisotropic tilted Dirac cones. In this work, we explore the consequences of the tilted Dirac cones in magnetotransport properties of a periodically modulated borophene. We evaluate modulation induced diffusive conductivity by using linear response theory in low temperature regime. The application of weak modulation (electric/magnetic or both) gives rise to the magnetic field dependent non-zero oscillatory drift velocity which causes Weiss oscillation in the longitudinal conductivity at low magnetic field. The Weiss oscillation is studied in presence of a…
Theoretical investigation of thermodynamic properties of electrically modulated monolayer graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field B is presented. This work is aimed at determining the modulation induced effects on the thermodynamic properties of electrically modulated graphene. The results obtained are compared with those of the conventional 2DEG. The one-dimensional periodic potential due to electric modulation lifts the degeneracy of the Landau Levels and converts them into bands whose width oscillates as a function of B. We find Weiss type oscillations for small values of B…
We present a theoretical approach to study the effect of microwave radiation on the magnetoresistance of a one-dimensional superlattice. In our proposal the magnetoresistance of a unidirectional spatial periodic potential (superlattice), is modulated by microwave radiation due to an interference effect between both, space and time-dependent potentials. The final magnetoresistance will mainly depend on the spatial period of the superlattice and the radiation frequency. %Then, by tuning either the spatial period of the superlattice or the radiation %frequency, the magnetoresistance can be strong…
Transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field $B$, of a {\it weak} one-dimensional (1D) periodic potential modulation, and of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) described only by the Rashba term. In the absence of the modulation the SOI mixes the spin-up and spin-down states of neighboring Landau levels into two new, unequally spaced energy branches. The levels of these branches broaden into bands in the presence of the modulation and their bandwidths oscillate with the field $B$. Evaluated at the Fermi energy, the $n$…
