We have performed a detailed investigation of the electrical properties of a graphene monolayer which is modulated by a weak one dimensional periodic potential in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The periodic modulation broadens the Landau Levels into bands which oscillate with B. The electronic conduction in this system can take place through either diffusive scattering or collisional scattering off impurities. Both these contributions to electronic transport are taken into account in this work. In addition to the appearance of commensurability oscillations in both the collisional and diffusive contributions, we find that Hall resistance also exhibits commensurability oscillations. Furthermore, the period and amplitude of these commensurability oscillations in the transport parameters and how they are affected by temperature are also discussed in this work.
It is shown that the classical commensurability phenomena in weakly modulated two-dimensional electron systems is a manifestation of the intrinsic properties of the correlation functions describing a homogeneous electron gas in a magnetic field. The theory demonstrates the importance for consideration of nonlocal response and removes the gap between classical and quantum approaches to magnetotransport in such systems.
We report on a time-dependent Lippmann-Schwinger scattering theory that allows us to study the transport spectroscopy in a time-modulated double quantum point contact system in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Magnetotransport properties involving inter-subband and inter-sideband transitions are tunable by adjusting the time-modulated split-gates and the applied magnetic field. The observed magnetic field induced Fano resonance feature may be useful for the application of quantum switching.
A semiclassical theory based on the Boltzmann transport equation for a two-dimensional electron gas modulated along one direction with weak electrostatic or magnetic modulations is proposed. It is shown that oscillations of the magnetoresistivity $ ρ_{||} $ corresponding to the current driven along the modulation lines observed at moderately low magnetic fields, can be explained as classical geometric resonances reflecting the commensurability of the period of spatial modulations and the cyclotron radius of electrons.
We study the electrical transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in presence of a constant perpendicular magnetic field $(B_0 \hat z)$ which is weakly modulated by ${\bf B_1} = B_1 \cos (q x) \hat z$, where $B_1 \ll B_0 $ and $q = 2 π/a $ with $a$ is the modulation period. We obtain the analytical expressions of the diffusive conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons. The conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons oscillate with different frequencies and produce beating patterns in the amplitude of the Weiss and Shubnikov-de…
We study spin transport of holes through stubless or stubbed waveguides modulated periodically by diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) sections of width b1 . Injected holes of up (down) spin feel a periodically modulated barrier (well) potential in the DMS sections and have different transmission (T) coefficients. T oscillates with b1 for spin-down and decreases fast for spin-up holes while the relative polarization Pr depends nearly periodically on the stub height. Using asymmetric stubs leads to a nearly square-wave pattern in T and to wide plateaus in Pr . T oscillates with the length betwe…
A quasiclassical theory for dc magnetotransport in a modulated quantum Hall system near filling factor $ν={1/2}$ is presented. A weak one-dimensional electrostatic potential acts on the two-dimensional electron gas. Closed form analytic expressions are obtained for the resistivity $ρ_\perp$ corresponding to a current at right angles to the direction of the modulation lines as well as a smaller component $ρ_{||}$ for a current along the direction of the modulation lines. It is shown that both resistivity components are affected by the presence of the modulation. Numerical results are presented …
We study light scattering from a periodically modulated two dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field. If a subband is partially filled, the imaginary part of the dielectric function as a function of frequency contains additional discontinuities to the case of completely filled subbands. The positions of the discontinuities may be determined from the partial filling factor and the height of the discontinuity can be directly related to the modulation potential. The light scattering cross section contains a new peak which is absent for integer filling.
It is known that the conductance of a quantum point contact is quantized in units of $2e^2/h$ and this quantization is destroyed by a non-adiabatic scatterer in the point contact, due to backscattering. Recently, it was shown [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 137 (1993)] that taking many non-adiabatic scatterers periodically in a quantum channel, the quantization can be recovered. We study this conductance quantization of a periodic system in the presence of a strong defect. A periodic arrangement of double-stubs give remarkable quantization of conductance. A periodic arrangement of double-constrictions a…
We analyze the dynamics of a charged particle moving in the presence of spatially-modulated magnetic fields. From Poincare surfaces of section and Liapunov exponents for characteristic trajectories we find that the fraction of pinned and runaway quasiperiodic orbits {\em vs}. chaotic orbits depends strongly on the ratio of cyclotron radius to the structure parameters, as well as on the amplitude of the modulated field. We present a complete characterization of the dynamical behavior of such structures, and investigate the contribution to the magnetoconductivity from all different orbits using …
We study the dc-response of the striped state under microwave irradiation. The striped state can be modeled by a two-dimensional electron system under the influence of a unidirectional periodic modulation potential, which was examined in [J. Dietel et al. Phys. Rev. B (71), 045329 (2005)]. We further extend our study of the periodically modulated system to the case of strongly overlapping Landau levels and calculate the dark and photoconductivities. The strength of the modulation potential serves as an additional parameter which allows to vary the overlap of the Landau levels independently of …
We have experimentally and numerically investigated the dispersion of collective spin waves prop-agating through arrays of longitudinally magnetized nanowires with periodically modulated width. Two nanowire arrays with single-side modulation and different periodicity of modulation were studied and compared to the nanowires with homogeneous width. The spin-wave dispersion, meas-ured up to the third Brillouin zone of the reciprocal space, revealed the presence of two dispersive modes for the width-modulated NWs, whose amplitude of magnonic band depends on the modula-tion periodicity, and a set o…
The electron transmission $T$ is evaluated through waveguides, in which the strength of the spin-orbit interaction(SOI) $α$ is varied periodically, using the transfer-matrix technique. It is shown that $T$ exhibits a {\it spin-transistor} action, as a function of $α$ or of the length of one of the two subunits of the unit cell, provided only one mode is allowed to propagate in the waveguide. A similar but not periodic behavior occurs as a function of the incident electron energy. A transparent formula for $T$ through one unit is obtained and helps explain its periodic behavior. The structure c…
Graphene-based superlattice (SL) formed by a periodic gap modulation is studied theoretically using a Dirac-type Hamiltonian. Analyzing the dispersion relation we have found that new Dirac points arise in the electronic spectrum under certain conditions. As a result, the gap between conduction and valence minibands disappears. The expressions for the position of these Dirac points in ${\bf k}$-space and threshold value of the potential for their emergence were obtained. At some parameters of the system, we have revealed interface states which form the top of the valence miniband.
Motivated by the recent experiment of Hochgraefe et al., we have investigated the magnetoplasmon excitations in a periodic array of quantum wires with a periodic modulation along the wire direction. The equilibrium and dynamic properties of the system are treated self-consistently within the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsaecker approximation. A calculation of the dynamical response of the system to a far-infrared radiation field reveals a resonant anticrossing between the Kohn mode and a finite-wavevector longitudinal excitation which is induced by the density modulation along the wires. Our the…
This article presents theoretical results for the dynamic response of periodically surface-modulated ferromagnetic thin films. For such system, the role of the periodic dipolar field induced by the modulation is addressed by using the plane-wave method. By controlling the geometry of the modulated volumes within the film, the frequency modes and spatial profiles of spin waves can be manipulated. The angular dependence of the frequency band-gaps unveils the influence of both dynamic and static magnetic charges, which reside in the edges of the etching periodic zones, and it is stablished that b…
We calculate the longitudinal conductivities of a two-dimensional noninteracting electron gas in a uniform magnetic field and a lateral electric or magnetic periodic modulation in one spatial direction, in the quantum regime. We consider the effects of the electron-impurity scattering anisotropy through the vertex corrections on the Kubo formula, which are calculated with the Bethe-Salpeter equation, in the self-consistent Born approximation. We find that due to the scattering anisotropy the band conductivity increases, and the scattering conductivities decrease and become anisotropic. Our res…
Transverse-electric (TE) surface plasmon polaritons are unique eigenmodes of a homogeneous graphene layer that are tunable with the chemical potential and temperature. However, as their dispersion curve spectrally lies just below the light line, they cannot be resonantly excited by an externally incident wave. Here, we propose a way of exciting the TE modes and tuning their peaks in the transmission by introducing a one-dimensional graphene grating. Using the scattering-matrix formalism, we show that periodic modulations of graphene make the transmission more pronounced, potentially allowing f…
We investigate dynamics of activated escape in periodically modulated systems. The trajectories followed in escape form diffusion broadened tubes, which are periodically repeated in time. We show that these tubes can be directly observed and find their shape. Quantitatively, the tubes are characterized by the distribution of trajectories that, after escape, pass through a given point in phase space for a given modulation phase. This distribution may display several peaks separated by the modulation period. Analytical results agree with the results of simulations of a model Brownian particle in…
We study ballistic electron transport through a finite chain of quantum circular rings in the presence of spin-orbit interaction of strength α. For a single ring the transmission and reflection coefficients are obtained analytically and from them the conductance for a chain of rings as a function of αand of the wave vector k of the incident electron. We show that due to destructive spin interferences the chain can be totaly opaque for certain ranges of k the width of which depends on the value of α. A periodic modulation of the strength αor of the ring radius widens up the gaps considerably an…
We compute the energy absorbed by a one dimensional system of cold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice subjected to lattice amplitude modulation periodic with time. We perform the calculation for the superfluid and the Mott insulator created by a weak lattice, and the Mott insulator in a strong lattice potential. For the latter case we show results for 3D systems as well. Our calculations, based on bosonization techniques and strong coupling methods, go beyond standard Bogoliubov theory. We show that the energy absorption rate exhibits distinctive features of low dimensional systems and Luttin…
Ballistic spin transport, through periodically stubbed waveguides, is studied in the presence of a weak spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and the resulting subband mixing. By an appropriate choice of the waveguide length and of the stub parameters injected spin-polarized electrons can be blocked completely and the transmission shows a periodic and nearly square-wave pattern with wide gaps when only one mode is allowed to propagate in the waveguide. Relative to the case when subband mixing is neglected, the transmission changes drastically as a function of the incident electron energy or of the stub…
We study one dimensional (1D) and quasi-1D periodic structures as possible platforms for the emergence of Majorana bound states with enhanced robustness against disorder and system inhomogeneity. First, using a simple 1D model, we analytically derive the effective parameters characterizing the minibands generated by the periodic potential. We show that, for strong enough periodic potentials, the higher energy minibands hosting Majorana bound states have significant advantages compared to their counterparts in uniform systems, including increased topological gaps, enhanced robustness against di…
The rate of noise-induced escape from a metastable state of a periodically modulated overdamped system is found for an arbitrary modulation amplitude $A$. The instantaneous escape rate displays peaks that vary with the modulation from Gaussian to strongly asymmetric. The prefactor $ν$ in the period-averaged escape rate depends on $A$ nonmonotonically. Near the bifurcation amplitude $A_c$ it scales as $ν\propto (A_c-A)^ζ$. We identify three scaling regimes, with $ζ= 1/4, -1$, and 1/2.
The effect of a modulated magnetic field on the electronic structure of neutral graphene is examined in this paper. It is found that application of a small staggered modulated magnetic field does not destroy the Dirac-cone structure of graphene and so preserves its 4-fold zero-energy degeneracy. The original Dirac points (DPs) are just shifted to other positions in k space. By varying the staggered field gradually, new DPs with exactly the same electron-hole crossing energy as that of the original DPs, are generated, and both the new and original DPs are moving continuously. Once two DPs are s…
We propose to study the transition from a nodal loop to nodal chain phase in a tunable two-dimensional $π$-flux lattice with periodical modulation potential. The Hamiltonian describes a periodically modulated optical lattice system under artificial magnetic fluxes and the tunable modulation phase factor provides additionally an artificial dimension of external parameter space. We demonstrate that this lattice system is able to describe a semimetal with either nodal loop or nodal chain Fermi surface in the extended three-dimensional Brillouin zone. By changing the strength of modulation potenti…
Common models describing magnetotransport properties of periodically modulated two--dimensional systems often either directly start from a semiclassical approach or give results well conceivable within the semiclassical framework. Recently, magnetoresistance oscillations have been found on samples with strong unilateral modulation and short period (d=15 nm) which cannot be explained on a semiclassical level (magnetic breakdown). We use a simple fully quantum mechanical model which gives us both magnetoresistance data nicely comparing to the experiments and a good intuitive insight into the eff…
Magnetic fields are often used for characterizing transport in nanoscale materials. Recent magnetotransport experiments have demonstrated that ballistic transport is possible in graphene antidot lattices (GALs). These experiments have inspired the present theoretical study of GALs in a perpendicular magnetic field. We calculate magnetotransport through graphene antidot barriers (GABs), which are finite rows of antidots arranged periodically in a pristine graphene sheet, using a tight-binding model and the Landauer-Büttiker formula. We show that GABs behave as ideal Dirac mass barriers for anti…
We identify the existence of various symmetry-protected topological states in one-dimensional superlattices with periodically modulated hopping amplitudes or on-site potentials, which can be characterized by the quantized Berry phase $π$ or the emergence of a pair of degenerate boundary states. It is shown that there may exist three types of topological phases, which are protected by the inversion symmetry, the chiral symmetry, and both of them, respectively, depending on the modulations, the odd or even modulation period. The connection between the hopping and potential modulations is also di…
We investigate the dispersion topology of elastic lattices characterized by spatial stiffness modulation. The modulation is defined by the sampling of a two-dimensional surface, which provides the lattices with topological properties that are usually attributed to two-dimensional crystals. We show that the cyclic variation of the phase of the stiffness modulation leads to a Berry phase accumulation for the Bloch eigenmodes, which is characterized by integer valued Chern numbers for the bands and associated gap labels. The resulting non-trivial gaps are spanned by edge modes localized at one of…
The linear response of two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field in the presence of a spatially dependent classically smooth electrostatic potential is studied theoretically, by application of the Kubo formula for nonlocal conductivity tensor. In the classical transport regime, a general expression for the conductivity tensor through the correlation functions of the homogeneous electron gas is derived. The quantum transport regime, when Landau quantization is essential, is studied for the case of unidirectional periodic potential modulation. Apart from the Shubnikov-de Haa…
Transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field $B$, of a {\it weak} one-dimensional (1D) periodic potential modulation, and of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) described only by the Rashba term. In the absence of the modulation the SOI mixes the spin-up and spin-down states of neighboring Landau levels into two new, unequally spaced energy branches. The levels of these branches broaden into bands in the presence of the modulation and their bandwidths oscillate with the field $B$. Evaluated at the Fermi energy, the $n$…
We explore the transport properties of a periodically modulated $α$-$\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The effect of the Berry phase on electrical conductivity oscillation, so-called Weiss oscillation, caused by the modulation induced non-zero drift velocity of charge carriers is investigated. Employing linear response theory within the low temperature regime, we analyze Weiss oscillation as a function of the external magnetic field for both electrically and magnetically modulated $α$-$\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice numerically as well as analytically. The Berry…
We report on magnetotransport of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES), located 32 nm below the surface, with a surface superlattice gate structure of periodicity 39 nm imposing a periodic modulation of its potential. For low Landau level fillings $ν$, the diagonal resistivity displays a rich pattern of fluctuations, even though the disorder dominates over the periodic modulation. Theoretical arguments based on the combined effects of the long-wavelength, strong disorder and the short-wavelength, weak periodic modulation present in the 2DES qualitatively explain the data.
This book chapter describes the dynamics of a modulated oscillator for resonant and nonresonant modulation. Two types of resonant modulation are considered: additive, with frequency close to the oscillator eigenfrequency, and parametric, with frequency close to twice the eigenfrequency. It is shown that relaxation of the oscillator is accompanied by quantum noise, which leads to a finite-width distribution over quantum states even for T=0. The quantum noise also leads to switching between coexisting vibrational states via transitions over the barrier in phase space. The switching mechanism, qu…
Commensurability oscillations in the magnetotransport of periodically patterned systems, emerging from the interplay of cyclotron orbit and the pattern periodicity, are a benchmark of mesoscopic physics in electron gas systems. Exploiting similar effects in 2D materials would allow exceptional control of electron behaviour, but is hindered by the requirement to maintain ballistic transport over large length scales. Recent experiments have overcome this obstacle and observed distinct magnetoresistance commensurability peaks for perforated graphene sheets (antidot lattices). Interpreting the exa…
Photonic crystals and metamaterials are two overarching paradigms for manipulating light. Combining the two approaches leads to hypercrystals: hyperbolic dispersion metamaterials that undergo periodic modulation and mix photonic-crystal-like aspects with hyperbolic dispersion physics. So far, there has been limited experimental realization of hypercrystals due to various technical and design constraints. Here, we create nanoscale hypercrystals with lattice constants ranging from 25 nm to 160 nm and measure their collective Bloch modes and dispersion with scattering nearfield microscopy. We dem…
We have studied the collective plasma excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas with an arbitrary lateral charge-density modulation. The dynamics is formulated using a previously developed hydrodynamic theory based on the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsacker approximation. In this approach, both the equilibrium and dynamical properties of the periodically modulated electron gas are treated in a consistent fashion. We pay particular attention to the evolution of the collective excitations as the system undergoes the transition from the ideal two-dimensional limit to the highly-localized one-di…
We study ballistic transport of spin-polarized electrons through quantum wires in which the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is spatially modulated. Subband mixing, due to SOI, between the two lowest subbands is taken into account. Simplified approximate expressions for the transmission are obtained for electron energies close to the bottom of the first subband and near the value for which anticrossing of the two lowest subbands occurs. In structures with periodically varied SOI strength, {\it square-wave} modulation on the spin transmission is found when only one subband is…
We extend the stationary-state work fluctuation theorem to periodically modulated nonlinear systems. Such systems often have coexisting stable periodic states. We show that work fluctuations sharply increase near a kinetic phase transition where the state populations are close to each other. The work variance is proportional here to the reciprocal rate of interstate switching. We also show that the variance displays scaling with the distance to a bifurcation point and find the critical exponent for a saddle-node bifurcation.
We study ballistic transport in periodically gated bilayer graphene as a candidate for a 2D electronic metamaterial. Our calculations use the equilibrium Green function formalism and take into account quantum corrections to charge density changes induced by a periodically modulated top gate voltage. Our results reveal an intriguing interference-like pattern, similar to that of a Fabry-Perot interferometer, in the resistance map as a function of the voltage $V_{BG}$ applied to the extended bottom gate and $V_{TG}$ applied to the periodic top gate.
We show that the rate of activated escape $W$ from a periodically modulated potential displays scaling behavior versus modulation amplitude $A$. For adiabatic modulation of an optically trapped Brownian particle, measurements yield $\ln W\propto (A_{\rm c} - A)^μ$ with $μ= 1.5$. The theory gives $μ=3/2$ in the adiabatic limit and predicts a crossover to $μ=2$ scaling as $A$ approaches the bifurcation point where the metastable state disappears.
We show that an atomic system in a periodically modulated optical trap displays an ideal mean-field symmetry-breaking transition. The symmetry is broken with respect to time translation by the modulation period. The transition is due to the interplay of the long-range interatomic interaction and nonequilibrium fluctuations. The observed critical dynamics, including anomalous fluctuations in the symmetry broken phase, are fully described by the proposed microscopic theory.
We study the dynamics of two ensembles of atoms (or equivalently, atomic clocks) coupled to a bad cavity and pumped incoherently by a Raman laser. Our main result is the nonequilibrium phase diagram for this experimental setup in terms of two parameters - detuning between the clocks and the repump rate. There are three main phases - trivial steady state (Phase I), where all atoms are maximally pumped, nontrivial steady state corresponding to monochromatic superradiance (Phase II), and amplitude-modulated superradiance (Phase III). Phases I and II are fixed points of the mean-field dynamics, wh…

We analyze the dynamics of a superconducting qubit and the phenomenon of multiorder Rabi oscillations in the presence of a time-modulated external field. Such a field is also presented as a bichromatic field consisting of two spectral components, which are symmetrically detuned from the qubit resonance frequency. This approach leads to obtaining qualitative quantum effects beyond those for the case of monochromatic excitation of qubits. We calculate Floquet states and quasienergies of the composite system "superconducting qubit plus time-modulated field" for various resonant regimes. We analyz…
Quantum systems can show qualitatively new forms of behavior when they are driven by fast time-periodic modulations. In the limit of large driving frequency, the long-time dynamics of such systems can often be described by a time-independent effective Hamiltonian, which is generally identified through a perturbative treatment. Here, we present a general formalism that describes time-modulated physical systems, in which the driving frequency is large, but resonant with respect to energy spacings inherent to the system at rest. Such a situation is currently exploited in optical-lattice setups, w…
