Within the quantum affine algebra representation theory we construct linear covariant operators that generate the Askey-Wilson algebra. It has the property of a coideal subalgebra, which can be interpreted as the boundary symmetry algebra of a model with quantum affine symmetry in the bulk. The generators of the Askey-Wilson algebra are implemented to construct an operator valued $K$- matrix, a solution of a spectral dependent reflection equation. We consider the open driven diffusive system where the Askey-Wilson algebra arises as a boundary symmetry and can be used for an exact solution of the model in the stationary state. We discuss the possibility of a solution beyond the stationary state on the basis of the proposed relation of the Askey-Wilson algebra to the reflection equation.
The Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra is introduced through generators $\{\boX,\boW\}$ and relations. These relations can be understood as an extension of the usual Askey-Wilson ones. A central element is given, and a canonical form of the Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra is presented. A homomorphism from the Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra to the Askey-Wilson one is identified. On the vector space of the polynomials in the variable $x=z+z^{-1}$, the Heun operator of Askey-Wilson type realizing $\boW$ can be characterized as the most general second order $q$-difference operator in the variable $z$ that maps polyno…
Automorphisms of the infinite dimensional Onsager algebra are introduced. Certain quotients of the Onsager algebra are formulated using a polynomial in these automorphisms. In the simplest case, the quotient coincides with the classical analog of the Askey-Wilson algebra. In the general case, generalizations of the classical Askey-Wilson algebra are obtained. The corresponding class of solutions of the non-standard classical Yang-Baxter algebra are constructed, from which a generating function of elements in the commutative subalgebra is derived. We provide also another presentation of the Ons…
The higher rank Askey-Wilson algebra was recently constructed in the $n$-fold tensor product of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. In this paper we prove a class of identities inside this algebra, which generalize the defining relations of the rank one Askey-Wilson algebra. We extend the known construction algorithm by several equivalent methods, using a novel coaction. These allow to simplify calculations significantly. At the same time, this provides a proof of the corresponding relations for the higher rank $q$-Bannai-Ito algebra.
A construction is given of the most general representations of the q-oscillator algebra where both generators are tridiagonal. It is shown to be connected to the Askey-Wilson polynomials.
The Askey--Wilson algebras were used to interpret the algebraic structure hidden in the Racah--Wigner coefficients of the quantum algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. In this paper, we display an injection of a universal analog $\triangle_q$ of Askey--Wilson algebras into $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)\otimes U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)\otimes U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ behind the application. Moreover we formulate the decomposition rules for $3$-fold tensor products of irreducible Verma $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-modules and of finite-dimensional irreducible $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-modules into the direct sums of finite-di…
The Askey-Wilson algebra is realized in terms of the elements of the quantum algebras $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(2))$ or $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$. A new realization of the Racah algebra in terms of the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ or $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ is given also. Details for different specializations are provided. The advantage of these new realizations is that one generator of the Askey-Wilson (or Racah) algebra becomes diagonal in the usual representation of the quantum algebras whereas the second one is tridiagonal. This allows to recover easily the recurrence relations of the associated …
The $q$-difference equation, the shift and the contiguity relations of the Askey-Wilson polynomials are cast in the framework of the three and four-dimensional degenerate Sklyanin algebras $\mathfrak{ska}_3$ and $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. It is shown that the $q$-para Racah polynomials corresponding to a non-conventional truncation of the Askey-Wilson polynomials form a basis for a finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. The first order Heun operators defined by a degree raising condition on polynomials are shown to form a five-dimensional vector space that encompasses $\mathfrak{ska…
In this paper we describe two pairs of raising/lowering operators for Askey-Wilson polynomials, which result from constructions involving very different techniques. The first technique is quite elementary, and depends only on the ''classical'' properties of these polynomials, viz. the q-difference equation and the three term recurrence. The second technique is less elementary, and involves the one-variable version of the double affine Hecke algebra.
As the third stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present, in the framework of 'discrete quantum mechanics' with pure imaginary shifts in one dimension, the multi-indexed Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. They are obtained from the original Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of 'virtual state solutions' of type I and II, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre, Jacobi and (q-)Racah polynomials reported earlier.
Two sets of infinitely many exceptional orthogonal polynomials related to the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials are presented. They are derived as the eigenfunctions of shape invariant and thus exactly solvable quantum mechanical Hamiltonians, which are deformations of those for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials in terms of a degree \ell (\ell=1,2,...) eigenpolynomial. These polynomials are exceptional in the sense that they start from degree \ell\ge1 and thus not constrained by any generalisation of Bochner's theorem.
Infinitely many Casoratian identities are derived for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials in parallel to the Wronskian identities for the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials, which were reported recently by the present authors. These identities form the basis of the equivalence between eigenstate adding and deleting Darboux transformations for solvable (discrete) quantum mechanical systems. Similar identities hold for various reduced form polynomials of the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, e.g. the continuous q-Jacobi, continuous (dual) (q-)Hahn, Meixner-Pollaczek, Al-Salam-Chihar…
The occurrence of the Askey-Wilson (AW) algebra in the $SU(2)$ Chern-Simons (CS) theory and in the Reshetikhin-Turaev (RT) link invariant construction with quantum algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{su}_2)$ is explored. Tangle diagrams with three strands with some of them enclosed in a spin-$1/2$ closed loop are associated to the generators of the AW algebra. It is shown in both the CS theory and RT construction that the link invariant of these tangles obey the relations of the AW generators. It follows that the expectation values of certain Wilson loops in the CS theory satisfy relations dictated by the …
The $sl_N$-Onsager algebra has been introduced by Uglov and Ivanov in 1995. In this letter, a FRT presentation of the $sl_N$-Onsager algebra is given, its current algebra and commutative subalgebra are constructed. Certain quotients of the $sl_N$-Onsager algebra are then considered, which produce `classical' analogs of higher rank extensions of the Askey-Wilson algebra. As examples, the cases $N=3$ and $N=4$ are described in details.
The centralizer of the image of the diagonal embedding of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ in the tensor product of three irreducible representations is examined in a Schur-Weyl duality spirit. The aim is to offer a description in terms of generators and relations. A conjecture in this respect is offered with the centralizers presented as quotients of the Askey-Wilson algebra. Support for the conjecture is provided by an examination of the representations of the quotients. The conjecture is also shown to be true in a number of cases thereby exhibiting in particular the Temperley-Lieb, Birman-Murakami-We…
A description of the embedding of the universal Askey--Wilson algebra, AW(3), in $U_q(sl_2)^{\otimes 3}$ is given in terms of the universal R-matrix of $U_q(sl_2)$. The generators of the centralizer of $U_q(sl_2)$ in its three-fold product are naturally expressed through conjugations of Casimir elements with R. They are identified as the images of the generators of AW(3) under the embedding map by showing that they obey the AW(3) relations. This is achieved by introducing a natural coaction also constructed with the help of the R-matrix.
We show that the equilibrium positions of the Ruijsenaars-Schneider-van Diejen systems with the trigonometric potential are given by the zeros of the Askey-Wilson polynomials with five parameters. The corresponding single particle quantum version, which is a typical example of "discrete" quantum mechanical systems with a q-shift type kinetic term, is shape invariant and the eigenfunctions are the Askey-Wilson polynomials. This is an extension of our previous study [1,2], which established the "discrete analogue" of the well-known fact; The equilibrium positions of the Calogero systems are desc…
The $q$-deformed Bannai-Ito algebra was recently constructed in the threefold tensor product of the quantum superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}_q(1\vert 2)$. It turned out to be isomorphic to the Askey-Wilson algebra. In the present paper these results will be extended to higher rank. The rank $n-2$ $q$-Bannai-Ito algebra $\mathcal{A}_n^q$, which by the established isomorphism also yields a higher rank version of the Askey-Wilson algebra, is constructed in the $n$-fold tensor product of $\mathfrak{osp}_q(1\vert 2)$. An explicit realization in terms of $q$-shift operators and reflections is proposed, …
The Askey-Wilson algebra and its relatives such as the Racah and Bannai-Ito algebras were initially introduced in connection with the eponym orthogonal polynomials. They have since proved ubiquitous. In particular they admit presentations as commutants that are related through Howe duality. This paper surveys these results.
An alternative derivation is presented of the infinitely many exceptional Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, which were introduced by the present authors in 2009. Darboux-Crum transformations intertwining the discrete quantum mechanical systems of the original and the exceptional polynomials play an important role. Infinitely many continuous Hahn polynomials are derived in the same manner. The present method provides a simple proof of the shape invariance of these systems as in the corresponding cases of the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials.
We study the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with open boundary conditions. Particles are injected and ejected at both boundaries. It is clarified that the steady state of the model is intimately related to the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The partition function and the $n$-point functions are obtained in the integral form with four boundary parameters. The thermodynamic current is evaluated to confirm the conjectured phase diagram.
We study a family of integrals parameterised by $ N = 2,3,\dots $ generalising the Askey-Wilson integral $ N=2 $ which has arisen in the theory of $q$-analogs of monodromy preserving deformations of linear differential systems and in theory of the Baxter $Q$ operator for the $ XXZ $ open quantum spin chain. These integrals are particular examples of moments defined by weights generalising the Askey-Wilson weight and we show the integrals are characterised by various $ (N-1) $-th order linear $q$-difference equations which we construct. In addition we demonstrate that these integrals can be eva…
A novel generalization of the Askey-Wilson algebra is presented and shown to be associated with coproducts in the quantum algebra $U_q(su(1,1))$. This algebra has 15 non-commuting generators given by $Q^{(A)}$, with $A\subset \{1,2,3,4\}$ and their 5 linearly independent inversions generated by the algebra automorphism $q\rightarrow q^{-1}$, $E\leftrightarrow F.$ The set of generators can be split into operators fixed under inversion, and those with an orientation under this inversion. We then show that the generators will either commute or satisfy q-commutator relations linear in the generato…
An operator of Heun-Askey-Wilson type is diagonalized within the framework of the algebraic Bethe ansatz using the theory of Leonard pairs. For different specializations and the generic case, the corresponding eigenstates are constructed in the form of Bethe states, whose Bethe roots satisfy Bethe ansatz equations of homogeneous or inhomogenous type. For each set of Bethe equations, an alternative presentation is given in terms of `symmetrized' Bethe roots. Also, two families of on-shell Bethe states are shown to generate two explicit bases on which a Leonard pair acts in a tridiagonal fashion…
A $q$-analogue of the Higgs algebra, which describes the symmetry properties of the harmonic oscillator on the $2$-sphere, is obtained as the commutant of the $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2) \oplus \mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)$ subalgebra of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(4)$ in the $q$-oscillator representation of the quantized universal enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{u}(4))$. This $q$-Higgs algebra is also found as a specialization of the Askey--Wilson algebra embedded in the tensor product $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))\otimes U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$. The connection between these two approaches is establish…
The Askey-Wilson polynomials are orthogonal polynomials in $x = \cos θ$, which are given as a terminating $_4ϕ_3$ basic hypergeometric series. The non-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials are Laurent polynomials in $z=e^{iθ}$, which are given as a sum of two terminating $_4ϕ_3$'s. They satisfy a biorthogonality relation. In this paper new orthogonality relations for single $_4ϕ_3$'s which are Laurent polynomials in $z$ are given, which imply the non-symmetric Askey-Wilson biorthogonality. These results include discrete orthogonality relations. They can be considered as a classical analytic study…
Motivated by the Gaussian symplectic ensemble, Mehta and Wang evaluated the $n$ by $n$ determinant $\det((a+j-i)Γ(b+j+i))$ in 2000. When $a=0$, Ciucu and Krattenthaler computed the associated Pfaffian $\Pf((j-i)Γ(b+j+i))$ with an application to the two dimensional dimer system in 2011. Recently we have generalized the latter Pfaffian formula with a $q$-analogue by replacing the Gamma function by the moment sequence of the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. On the other hand, Nishizawa has found a $q$-analogue of the Mehta--Wang formula. Our purpose is to generalize both the Mehta-Wang and Nishizaw…
The universal Askey-Wilson algebra $AW(3)$ can be obtained as the commutant of $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ in $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))^{\otimes3}$. We analyze the commutant of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)\oplus\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)\oplus\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)$ in $q$-oscillator representations of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(6)$ and show that it also realizes $AW(3)$. These two pictures of $AW(3)$ are shown to be dual in the sense of Howe; this is made clear by highlighting the role of the intermediate Casimir elements of each members of the dual pair $\big(U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1)),\mathfrak{o}_{…
We show that intertwining operators for the discrete Fourier transform form a cubic algebra $\mathcal{C}_q$ with $q$ a root of unity. This algebra is intimately related to the two other well-known realizations of the cubic algebra: the Askey-Wilson algebra and the Askey-Wilson-Heun algebra.
We present a simple recipe to construct exactly and quasi-exactly solvable Hamiltonians in one-dimensional `discrete' quantum mechanics, in which the Schrödinger equation is a difference equation. It reproduces all the known ones whose eigenfunctions consist of the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of a continuous or a discrete variable. The recipe also predicts several new ones. An essential role is played by the sinusoidal coordinate, which generates the closure relation and the Askey-Wilson algebra together with the Hamiltonian. The relationship between the closure relat…
We endow Ruijsenaars' open difference Toda chain with a one-sided boundary interaction of Askey-Wilson type and diagonalize the quantum Hamiltonian by means of deformed hyperoctahedral $q$-Whittaker functions that arise as a $t=0$ degeneration of the Macdonald-Koornwinder multivariate Askey-Wilson polynomials. This immediately entails the quantum integrability, the bispectral dual system, and the $n$-particle scattering operator for the chain in question.
A $\mathbb{D}$-semi-classical weight is one which satisfies a particular linear, first order homogeneous equation in a divided-difference operator $\mathbb{D}$. It is known that the system of polynomials, orthogonal with respect to this weight, and the associated functions satisfy a linear, first order homogeneous matrix equation in the divided-difference operator termed the spectral equation. Attached to the spectral equation is a structure which constitutes a number of relations such as those arising from compatibility with the three-term recurrence relation. Here this structure is elucidate…
An explicit homomorphism that relates the elements of the infinite dimensional non-Abelian algebra generating $O_q(\hat{sl_2})$ currents and the standard generators of the $q-$Onsager algebra is proposed. Two straightforward applications of the result are then considered: First, for the class of quantum integrable models which integrability condition originates in the $q-$Onsager spectrum generating algebra, the infinite $q-$deformed Dolan-Grady hierarchy is derived - bypassing the transfer matrix formalism. Secondly, higher Askey-Wilson relations that arise in the study of symmetric special f…
A one-parameter family of operators that have the complementary Bannai-Ito (CBI) polynomials as eigenfunctions is obtained. The CBI polynomials are the kernel partners of the Bannai-Ito polynomials and also correspond to a $q\rightarrow-1$ limit of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The eigenvalue equations for the CBI polynomials are found to involve second order Dunkl shift operators with reflections and exhibit quadratic spectra. The algebra associated to the CBI polynomials is given and seen to be a deformation of the Askey-Wilson algebra with an involution. The relation between the CBI polynom…
We describe a contraction theory for 2nd order superintegrable systems, showing that all such systems in 2 dimensions are limiting cases of a single system: the generic 3-parameter potential on the 2-sphere, S9 in our listing. Analogously, all of the quadratic symmetry algebras of these systems can be obtained by a sequence of contractions starting from S9. By contracting function space realizations of irreducible representations of the S9 algebra (which give the structure equations for Racah/Wilson polynomials) to the other superintegrable systems one obtains the full Askey scheme of orthogon…
Via the solutions of systems of algebraic equations of Bethe Ansatz type, we arrive at bounds for the zeros of orthogonal (basic) hypergeometric polynomials belonging to the Askey-Wilson, Wilson and continuous Hahn families.
Various examples of exactly solvable `discrete' quantum mechanics are explored explicitly with emphasis on shape invariance, Heisenberg operator solutions, annihilation-creation operators, the dynamical symmetry algebras and coherent states. The eigenfunctions are the (q-)Askey-scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials satisfying difference equation versions of the Schrödinger equation. Various reductions (restrictions) of the symmetry algebra of the Askey-Wilson system are explored in detail.
We consider the rational Heun operator defined as the most general second-order $q$-difference operator which sends any rational function of type $[(n-1)/n]$ to a rational function of type $[n/(n+1)]$. We shall take the poles to be located on the Askey-Wilson grid. It is shown that this operator is related to the one-dimensional degeneration of the Ruijsenaars-van Diejen Hamiltonians. The Wilson biorthogonal functions of type ${_{10}}Φ_9$ are found to be solutions of a generalized eigenvalue problem involving rational Heun operators of the special "classical" kind.
In the matrix product states approach to $n$ species diffusion processes the stationary probability distribution is expressed as a matrix product state with respect to a quadratic algebra determined by the dynamics of the process. The quadratic algebra defines a noncommutative space with a $SU_q(n)$ quantum group action as its symmetry. Boundary processes amount to the appearance of parameter dependent linear terms in the algebraic relations and lead to a reduction of the $SU_q(n)$ symmetry. We argue that the boundary operators of the asymmetric simple exclusion process generate a tridiagonal …
We show explicitly that all 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions are limiting cases of a single system: the generic 3-parameter potential on the 2-sphere, S9 in our listing. We extend the Wigner-Inönü method of Lie algebra contractions to contractions of quadratic algebras and show that all of the quadratic symmetry algebras of these systems are contractions of that of S9. Amazingly, all of the relevant contractions of these superintegrable systems on flat space and the sphere are uniquely induced by the well known Lie algebra contractions of e(2) and so(3). By contracting functio…
