Motivated by integral point sets in the Euclidean plane, we consider integral point sets in affine planes over finite fields. An integral point set is a set of points in the affine plane $\mathbb{F}_q^2$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the formally defined squared Euclidean distance of every pair of points is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. It turns out that integral point sets over $\mathbb{F}_q$ can also be characterized as affine point sets determining certain prescribed directions, which gives a relation to the work of Blokhuis. Furthermore, in one important sub-case integral point sets can be restated as cliques in Paley graphs of square order. In this article we give new results on the automorphisms of integral point sets and classify maximal integral point sets over $\mathbb{F}_q$ for $q\le 47$. Furthermore, we give two series of maximal integral point sets and prove their maximality.
It is shown that the maximal size of a $2$-arc in the projective Hjelmslev plane over $\mathbb{Z}_{25}$ is $21$, and the $(21,2)$-arc is unique up to isomorphism. Furthermore, all maximal $(20,2)$-arcs in the affine Hjelmslev plane over $\mathbb{Z}_{25}$ are classified up to isomorphism.
A permutation of the point set of the affine space $AG(n,q)$ is called an integral automorphism if it preserves the integral distance defined among the points. In this paper, we complete the classification of the integral automorphisms of $AG(n,q)$ for $n\ge 3$.
We completely classify and give explicit descriptions of the maximal closed subroot systems of real affine root systems. As an application we describe a procedure to get the classification of all regular subalgebras of affine Kac Moody algebras in terms of their root systems.

We give several explicit combinatorial formulas for the expansion of k-Schur functions indexed by maximal rectangles in terms of the standard basis of the affine nilCoxeter algebra. Using our result, we also show a commutation relation of k-Schur functions corresponding to rectangles with the generators of the affine nilCoxeter algebra.
We construct a (bi)cyclic sieving phenomenon on the union of dominant maximal weights for level $\ell$ highest weight modules over an affine Kac-Moody algebra with exactly one highest weight being taken for each equivalence class, in a way not depending on types, ranks and levels. In order to do that, we introduce $\textbf{\textit{S}}$-evaluation on the set of dominant maximal weights for each highest modules, and generalize Sagan's action by considering the datum on each affine Kac-Moody algebra. As consequences, we obtain closed and recursive formulae for cardinality of the number of dominan…
In the $m$-dimensional affine space $AG(m,q)$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd order $q$, the analogous of the Euclidean distance gives rise to a graph $\mathfrak{G}_{m,q}$ where vertices are the points of $AG(m,q)$ and two vertices are adjacent if their (formal) squared Euclidean distance is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$ (including the zero). In 2009, Kurz and Meyer made the conjecture that if $m$ is even then $\mathfrak{G}_{m,q}$ is a strongly regular graph. In this paper we prove their conjecture.
In this article, we analyse maximal sets of $k$-spaces, in PG(n,q) and AG(n,q), $n>2k+t+2$, that pairwise meet in at least a $t$-space. It is known that for both PG(n,q) and AG(n,q), the largest example is a $t$-pencil, i.e. the set of all $k$-spaces containing a fixed $t$-space. In this paper, we analyse the structure of the second largest maximal example in both PG(n,q) and AG(n,q).
In this paper, we introduce a fundamental substructure of maximal caps in the affine geometry $AG(4,3)$ that we call \emph{demicaps}. Demicaps provide a direct link to particular partitions of $AG(4,3)$ into 4 maximal caps plus a single point. The full collection of 36 maximal caps that are in exactly one partition with a given cap $C$ can be expressed as unions of two disjoint demicaps taken from a set of 12 demicaps; these 12 can also be found using demicaps in $C$. The action of the affine group on these 36 maximal caps includes actions related to the outer automorphisms of $S_6$.
We prove that the multiplicities of certain maximal weights of $\mathfrak{g}(A^{(1)}_{n})$-modules are counted by pattern avoidance on words. This proves and generalizes a conjecture of Misra-Rebecca. We also prove similar phenomena in types $A^{(2)}_{2n}$ and $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$. Both proofs are applications of Kashiwara's crystal theory.
We consider point sets in the $m$-dimensional affine space $\mathbb{F}_q^m$ where each squared Euclidean distance of two points is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. It turns out that the situation in $\mathbb{F}_q^m$ is rather similar to the one of integral distances in Euclidean spaces. Therefore we expect the results over finite fields to be useful for the Euclidean case. We completely determine the automorphism group of these spaces which preserves integral distances. For some small parameters $m$ and $q$ we determine the maximum cardinality $\mathcal{I}(m,q)$ of integral point sets in $\mathbb{F…
The entries of frieze patterns may be interpreted as coordinates of roots of a finite Weyl groupoid of rank two. We prove the existence of maximal elements in their root posets and classify those frieze patterns which can be used to build an affine simplicial arrangement.
We study the maximal rank in affine subspaces of symmetric or alternating matrices, in terms of the matching numbers of certain associated graphs. Applications include simple proofs of upper bounds on the dimension of such subspaces in terms of their maximal rank.
We describe in purely combinatorial terms dual pairs of integral affine structures on spheres which come from the conjectural metric collapse of mirror families of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. The same structures arise on the base of a special Lagrangian torus fibration in the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. We study the topological torus fibration in the large complex structure limit and show that it coincides with our combinatorial model.
We discuss a surprising relationship between the partially ordered set of Newton points associated to an affine Schubert cell and the quantum cohomology of the complex flag variety. The main theorem provides a combinatorial formula for the unique maximum element in this poset in terms of paths in the quantum Bruhat graph, whose vertices are indexed by elements in the finite Weyl group. Key to establishing this connection is the fact that paths in the quantum Bruhat graph encode saturated chains in the strong Bruhat order on the affine Weyl group. This correspondence is also fundamental in the …
This paper is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0205321 where we have built a combinatorial model for the torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. This part addresses the connection between the model torus fibration and the complex and Kähler geometry of the hypersurfaces.
In this paper, we consider integral maximal lattice-free simplices. Such simplices have integer vertices and contain integer points in the relative interior of each of their facets, but no integer point is allowed in the full interior. In dimension three, we show that any integral maximal lattice-free simplex is equivalent to one of seven simplices up to unimodular transformation. For higher dimensions, we demonstrate that the set of integral maximal lattice-free simplices with vertices lying on the coordinate axes is finite. This gives rise to a conjecture that the total number of integral ma…
Geometrical objects with integral side lengths have fascinated mathematicians through the ages. We call a set $P=\{p_1,...,p_n\}\subset\mathbb{Z}^2$ a maximal integral point set over $\mathbb{Z}^2$ if all pairwise distances are integral and every additional point $p_{n+1}$ destroys this property. Here we consider such sets for a given cardinality and with minimum possible diameter. We determine some exact values via exhaustive search and give several constructions for arbitrary cardinalities. Since we cannot guarantee the maximality in these cases we describe an algorithm to prove or disprove …
We develop a Borel-de Siebenthal theory for affine reflection systems by classifying their maximal closed subroot systems. Affine reflection systems (introduced by Loos and Neher) provide a unifying framework for root systems of finite-dimensional semi-simple Lie algebras, affine and toroidal Lie algebras, and extended affine Lie algebras. In the special case of nullity $k$ toroidal Lie algebras, we obtain a one-to-one correspondence between maximal closed subroot systems with full gradient and triples $(q,(b_i),H)$, where $q$ is a prime number, $(b_i)$ is a $n$-tuple of integers in the interv…
We introduce the notion of standard multipartitions and establish a one-to-one correspondence between standard multipartitions and irreducible representations with integral weights for the affine Hecke algebra of type A with a parameter q which is not a root of unity. We then extend the correspondence to all Kleshchev multipartitions for Ariki-Koike algebras of integral type. By the affine Schur--Weyl duality, we further extend this to a correspondence between standard multipartitions and Drinfeld multipolynomials of integral type whose associated irreducible polynomial representations complet…
Lattice-free sets (convex subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$ without interior integer points) and their applications for cutting-plane methods in mixed-integer optimization have been studied in recent literature. Notably, the family of all integral lattice-free polyhedra which are not properly contained in another integral lattice-free polyhedron has been of particular interest. We call these polyhedra $\mathbb{Z}^d$-maximal. It is known that, for fixed $d$, the family $\mathbb{Z}^d$-maximal integral lattice-free polyhedra is finite up to unimodular equivalence. In view of possible applications in cutt…
