The introduction of low-frequency radio arrays is expected to revolutionize the study of the reionization epoch. Observation of the contrast in redshifted 21cm emission between a large HII region and the surrounding neutral inter-galactic medium (IGM) will be the simplest and most easily interpreted signature. However the highest redshift quasars known are thought to reside in an ionized IGM. Using a semi-analytic model we describe the redshifted 21cm signal from the IGM surrounding quasars discovered using the i-drop out technique (i.e. quasars at z~6). We argue that while quasars at z<6.5 seem to reside in the post overlap IGM, they will still provide valuable probes of the late stages of the overlap era because the light-travel time across a quasar proximity zone should be comparable to the duration of overlap. For redshifted 21cm observations within a 32MHz bandpass, we find that the subtraction of a spectrally smooth foreground will not remove spectral features due to the proximity zone. These features could be used to measure the neutral hydrogen content of the IGM during the late stages of reionization. The density of quasars at z~6 is now well constrained. We use the measured quasar luminosity function to estimate the prospects for discovery of high redshift quasars in fields that will be observed by the Murchison Widefield Array.
We have searched for redshifted neutral hydrogen 21cm absorption toward sources from the Stickel et al. `red quasar' sub-sample. Five of these red quasars have been searched for redshifted HI 21cm absorption to optical depth levels of a few percent, and four show strong absorption. This 80% success rate for the red quasars compares to the much lower success rate of only 11% for detecting HI 21cm absorption associated with optically selected Mg II absorption line systems. The large neutral hydrogen column densities seen toward the red quasars provide circumstantial evidence supporting the dust …
The Ly-alpha absorption spectrum of the highest redshift quasars indicates that they are surrounded by giant HII regions, a few Mpc in size. The neutral gas around these HII regions should emit 21cm radiation in excess of the Cosmic Microwave Background, and enable future radio telescopes to measure the transverse extent of these HII regions. At early times, the HII regions expand with a relativistic speed. Consequently, their measured sizes along the line-of-sight (via Ly-alpha absorption) and transverse to it (via 21 cm emission) should have different observed values due to relativistic time…
We use cosmological simulations of reionization to predict the effect of large HII regions around individual high-redshift quasars on the possible signal from the redshifted 21cm line of neutral hydrogen in the pre-reionization era. We show that these HII regions appear as ``spectral dips'' in frequency space with equivalent widths in excess of 3 mK MHz or depths in excess of about 1.5 mK, and that they are by far the most prominent cosmological signals in the redshifted HI distribution. These spectral dips are expected to be present in almost every line of sight. If the spectral dips of a lar…
The introduction of low-frequency radio arrays over the coming decade is expected to revolutionize the study of the reionization epoch. Observation of the contrast in redshifted 21cm emission between a large HII region and the surrounding neutral IGM will be the simplest and most easily interpreted signature. We find that an instrument like the planned Mileura Widefield Array Low-Frequency Demonstrator (LFD) will be able to obtain good signal to noise on HII regions around the most luminous quasars, and determine some gross geometric properties, e.g. whether the HII region is spherical or coni…
We assess the impact of Galactic synchrotron foreground removal on the observation of high-redshift quasar HII regions in redshifted 21-cm emission. We consider the case where a quasar is observed in an intergalactic medium (IGM) whose ionisation structure evolves slowly relative to the light crossing time of the HII region, as well as the case where the evolution is rapid. The latter case is expected towards the end of the reionisation era where the highest redshift luminous quasars will be observed. In the absence of foregrounds the fraction of neutral hydrogen in the IGM could be measured d…
Light travel time delays distort the apparent shapes of HII regions surrounding bright quasars during early stages of cosmic reionization. Individual HII regions may remain undetectable in forthcoming redshifted 21 cm experiments. However, the systematic deformation along the line of sight may be detectable statistically, either by stacking tomographic 21cm images of quasars identified, for example, by JWST, or as small-scale anisotropy in the three-dimensional 21cm power spectrum. Here we consider the detectability of this effect. The anisotropy is largest when HII regions are large and expan…
We report a Chandra high-energy grating detection of a narrow, redshifted absorption line superimposed on the red wing of a broad Fe K line in the $z=0.297$ quasar E1821+643. The absorption line is detected at a confidence level, estimated by two different methods, in the range ~2-3 sigma. Although the detection significance is not high enough to exclude a non-astrophysical origin, accounting for the absorption feature when modeling the X-ray spectrum implies that the Fe-K emission line is broad, and consistent with an origin in a relativistic accretion disk. Ignoring the apparent absorption f…
We consider a contribution of microlensing in X-ray variability of high-redshifted QSOs. Such an effect could be caused by stellar mass objects (SMO) located in a bulge or/and in a halo of this quasar as well as at cosmological distances between an observer and a quasar. Here, we not considerability of microlensing caused by deflectors in our Galaxy since it is well-known from recent MACHO, EROS and OGLE observations that the corresponding optical depth for the Galactic halo and the Galactic bulge is lower than $10^{-6}$. Cosmologically distributed gravitational microlenses could be localized …
We assess the impact of inhomogeneous reionization on detection of HII regions surrounding luminous high redshift quasars using planned low frequency radio telescopes. Our approach is to implement a semi-numerical scheme to calculate the 3-dimensional structure of ionized regions surrounding a massive halo at high redshift, including the ionizing influence of a luminous quasar. As part of our analysis we briefly contrast our scheme with published semi-numerical models. We calculate mock 21cm spectra along the line of sight towards high redshift quasars, and estimate the ability of the planned …
We show that the Lyman-alpha optical depth statistics in the proximity regions of quasar spectra depend on the mass of the dark matter halos hosting the quasars. This is owing to both the overdensity around the quasars and the associated infall of gas toward them. For a fiducial quasar host halo mass of (3.0+/-1.6) h^-1 x 10^12 Msun, as inferred by Croom et al. from clustering in the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey, we show that estimates of the ionizing background (Gamma^bkg) from proximity effect measurements could be biased high by a factor of ~2.5 at z=3 owing to neglecting these effects alone. Th…
We describe initial results of a search for redshifted molecular absorption toward four millimetre-loud, optically faint quasars. A wide frequency bandwidth of up to 23 GHz per quasar was scanned using the Swedish-ESO Sub-millimetre Telescope at La Silla. Using a search list of commonly detected molecules, we obtained nearly complete redshift coverage up to z_abs=5. The sensitivity of our data is adequate to have revealed absorption systems with characteristics similar to those seen in the four known redshifted millimetre-band absorption systems, but none were found. Our frequency-scan techniq…
We present new results uncovered by a re-analysis of a Chandra observation of the gravitationally lensed, low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) quasar H 1413+117. Previous analyses of the same Chandra observation led to the detection of a strong, redshifted Fe Kalpha line from the combined spectrum of all images. We show that the redshifted Fe Kalpha line is only significant in the brighter image A. The X-ray flux fraction of image A is larger by a factor of 1.55 +/- 0.17 than the optical R-band flux fraction, indicating that image A is significantly enhanced in the X-ray band. We also …
Lyman-alpha forest absorption spectra towards quasars at z ~ 6 show regions of enhanced transmission close to their source. Several authors have argued that the apparently small sizes of these regions indicate that quasar ionization fronts at z >~ 6 expand into a largely or partly neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). Assuming that the typical region in the IGM is reionized by z <= 6, as is suggested by Ly-a forest observations, we argue that at {\em least} 50% of the volume of the IGM was reionized before the highest redshift quasars turned on. Further, even if the IGM is as much as 50% neutral…
We exploit a set of high signal-to-noise (~70), low-resolution (R~800) quasar spectra to search for the signature of the so-called proximity effect in the HI Ly alpha forest. Our sample consists of 17 bright quasars in the redshift range 2.7<z<4.1. Analysing the spectra with the flux transmission technique, we detect the proximity effect in the sample at high significance. We use this to estimate the average intensity of the metagalactic UV background, assuming it to be constant over this redshift range. We obtain a value of J = (9+-4)x10^{-22}ergcm^{-2}s^{-1}Hz^{-1}sr^{-1}, in good agreement …
The proximity effect of metal line absorption systems in spectra of high redshift quasars and quasar pairs is investigated through the distribution of \Lyalpha forests. No strong proximity effect is found down to 500 km/sec away from a metal line absorption system for lyman $α$ clouds with $13.3\le\log\NHI <13.8$ at a redshift of $\sim 3$. Its implication on properties of high redshift galaxies and \Lyalpha clouds is discussed. More high resolution spectra of high redshift quasars and pairs of quasars (whose lines of sight are separated by $\sim 0.3h^{-1}$ to 1$h^{-1}$ Mpc) are needed so that …
We report the discovery of 14 quasars in the vicinity of HE2347-4342, one of the two quasars whose intergalactic HeII forest has been resolved with FUSE. By analysing the HI and the HeII opacity variations separately, no transverse proximity effect is detected near three foreground quasars of HE2347-4342: QSOJ23503-4328 (z=2.282, $\vartheta=3.59$ arcmin), QSOJ23500-4319 (z=2.302, $\vartheta=8.77$ arcmin) and QSOJ23495-4338 (z=2.690, $\vartheta=16.28$ arcmin). This is primarily due to line contamination and overdensities probably created by large-scale structure. By comparing the HI absorption …
We study the density field around z_em > 4 quasars using high quality medium spectral resolution ESI-Keck spectra (R~4300, SNR > 25) of 45 high-redshift quasars selected from a total of 95 spectra. This large sample considerably increases the statistics compared to previous studies. The redshift evolution of the mean photo-ionization rate and the median optical depth of the intergalactic medium (IGM) are derived statistically from the observed transmitted flux and the pixel optical depth probability distribution function respectively. This is used to study the so-called proximity effect, that …
We report the discovery of the faint (V=21.7) quasar QSO03027-0010 at z=2.808 in the vicinity of Q0302-003, one of the few quasars observed with STIS to study intergalactic HeII absorption. Together with another newly discovered QSO at z=2.29, there are now 6 QSOs known near the line of sight towards Q0302-003, of which 4 are located within the redshift region 2.76<=z<=3.28 covered by the STIS spectrum. We correlated the opacity variations in the HI and HeII Lyman forest spectra with the locations of known quasars. There is no significant proximity effect in the HI Lyman alpha forest for any o…
We report on our recent detection of the transverse proximity effect of 4 foreground quasars near Q0302-003 (z=3.285) as a local hardness fluctuation in the spectral shape of the intergalactic UV radiation field, found by correlating the HI Lyαabsorption with the corresponding HeII Lyαabsorption. We argue that the spectral hardness is a sensitive physical measure to reveal the influence of quasars onto the UV background over scales of several Mpc, and that it breaks the density degeneracy hampering the search for the elusive transverse proximity effect. From the transverse proximity effect on …
Light rays from a multiply imaged quasar usually sample different path lengths across the deflector. Extinction in the lensing galaxy may thus lead to a differential obscuration and reddening between the observed macro-lensed QSO images. These effects naturally depend on the precise shape of the extinction law and on the redshift of the lens. By means of numerical Monte-Carlo simulations, using a least-squares fitting method and assuming an extinction law similar to that observed in the Galaxy, we show how accurate photometric observations of multiply imaged quasars obtained in several spectra…
In recent years large efforts have been made to detect molecular gas towards high redshifted objects. Up to now the literature reports on only two cases of CO-detection in quasars at a redshift between 1 and 2 - Q0957+561, a gravitationally lensed system at z=1.41 (Planesas et al. 1999), and HR10 at z=1.44 (Andreani et al. 2000). According to Planesas et al. (1999), 12CO(2-1) emission was detected towards both the lensed images of Q0957+561 with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). In contrast to the optical spectra of the two images which support the idea that they are images of on…
(Abridged) With the goal of investigating the nature of OVI absorbers at high redshifts, we study the effects of proximity to the background quasar. In a sample of sixteen quasars at z(QSO) between 2.14 and 2.87 observed at 6.6 km/s resolution with VLT/UVES, we detect 35 OVI absorption-line systems lying within 8000 km/s of z(QSO). The systems can be categorized into 9 strong and 26 weak OVI absorbers. The strong absorbers are defined by the presence of either broad, fully saturated OVI absorption or partial coverage of the continuum source, and have log N(OVI)>~15.0; these systems are intrins…
We present observations of RD J030117+002025, a quasar at z=5.50 discovered from deep, multi-color, ground-based observations covering 74 square arcmin. This is the most distant quasar or AGN currently known. The object was targeted as an R-band dropout, with R(AB)>26.3 (3-sigma limit in a 3 arcsec diameter region), I(AB)=23.8, and z(AB)=23.4. The Keck/LRIS spectrum shows broad Lyman-alpha/NV emission and sharp absorption decrements from the highly-redshifted hydrogen forests. The fractional continuum depression due to the Lyman-alpha forest is D(A)=0.90. RD J030117+002025 is the least luminou…
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 3 (SDSS DR3) we investigate how narrow (<700km/s) CIV and MgII quasar absorption line systems are distributed around quasars. The CIV absorbers lie in the redshift range 1.6 < z < 4 and the MgII absorbers in the range 0.4<z<2.2. By correlating absorbers with quasars on different but neighbouring lines-of-sight, we measure the clustering of absorbers around quasars on comoving scales between 4 and 30Mpc. The observed comoving correlation lengths are r_o~5h^-1Mpc, similar to those observed for bright galaxies at these redshifts. Comparing…
We used 40 high resolution, high S/N QSO spectra at 2.1<z<4.7 to search for the signature of the proximity effect in the HI Lyalpha forest. Comparing the effective optical depth near each QSO with the expected one, we clearly detect the proximity effect on the combined QSO sample and towards each individual QSO. The observed proximity effect strength distribution (PESD) is asymmetric towards a weak effect. We demonstrate that this is not simply an effect of gravitational clustering around QSOs. Comparing simulated PESDs with observations, we argue that the averaging method to determine the UVB…
We consider a contribution of microlensing to the X-ray variability of high-redshifted QSOs. Such an effect could be caused by stellar mass objects (SMO) located in a bulge or/and in a halo of this quasar as well as at cosmological distances between an observer and a quasar. Cosmologically distributed gravitational microlenses could be localized in galaxies (or even in bulge or halo of gravitational macrolenses) or could be distributed in a uniform way. We have analyzed both cases of such distributions. As a result of our analysis, we obtained that the optical depth for microlensing caused by …
Recent auto-correlation and fluctuation analysis of time series data in the brightness curves and micro-lensing size scales seen in Q0957+561 A,B has produced important information about the existence and characteristic physical dimensions of a new non-standard internal structure contained within this quasar. We find that the new internal quasar structure, which we shall call the Schild-Vakulik Structure, can be consistently explained in terms of a new class of gravitationally collapsing solutions to the Einstein field equations which describe highly redshifted, Eddington limited, Magnetospher…
We present a method for studying the proximity effect and the density structure around redshift z=2-3 quasars. It is based on the probability distribution of Lyman-alpha pixel optical depths and its evolution with redshift. We validate the method using mock spectra obtained from hydrodynamical simulations, and then apply it to a sample of 12 bright quasars at redshifts 2-3 observed with UVES at the VLT-UT2 Kueyen ESO telescope. These quasars do not show signatures of associated absorption and have a mean monochromatic luminosity of 5.4 10^{31} h^{-2} erg/s/Hz at the Lyman limit. The observed d…
[Abridged] We present new VLT ISAAC spectra for 30 quasars, which we combine with previous data to yield a sample of 53 intermediate redshift (z ~ 0.9 - 3.0) sources. The sample is used to explore properties of prominent lines in the Hbeta spectral region of these very luminous quasars. We find two major trends: (1) a systematic increase of minimum FWHM Hbeta with luminosity (discussed in a previous paper). This lower FWHM envelope is best fit assuming that the narrowest sources radiate near the Eddington limit, show line emission from a virialized cloud distribution, and obey a well defined b…
The diagnostic use and detectability of luminous fine structure lines from high redshift galaxies is reviewed in the light of results from COBE concerning the Milky Way and from ISO on low redshift galaxies. At the highest luminosities (L>10^{12}\Lsun) the [CII] 158 micron line is somewhat less luminous with respect to the bolometric luminosity than for lower luminosity objects. Thus, surveys for this line must emphasize depth. The [CII] line will be the principle spectroscopic probe of the deep universe for the MMA and FIRST. A deep search for [CII] 158 micron emission from the dusty z=4.693 …
Groups and clusters of galaxies hosting a quasar can be found through the detection of Lyman-alpha absorption lines beyond the quasar redshift. The effect occurs whenever the distortion to the redshift distribution of Lyman-alpha clouds induced by the cluster potential extends beyond the proximity effect of the quasar. Based on CDM cosmological models for the evolution of structure, we predict the probability for finding lines beyond the quasar redshift ($z_{abs}>z_Q$) under the assumption that the physical properties of Lyman-alpha clouds are not affected by flows on large scales (1 Mpc and m…
Millimetre-band scans of the frequency space towards optically dim quasars is potentially a highly efficient method for detecting new high redshift molecular absorption systems. Here we describe scans towards 7 quasars over wide bandwidths (up to 23 GHz) with sensitivity limits sufficient to detect the 4 redshifted absorbers already known. With wider frequency bands, highly efficient searches of large numbers of possibly obscured objects will yield many new molecular absorbers.
We report Cousins R-band monitoring of the high-redshift (z=4.40) radio quiet quasar Q 2203+292 from May 1999 to October 2007. The quasar shows maximum peak-to-peak light curve amplitude of ~0.3 mag during the time of our monitoring, and ~0.9 mag when combined with older literature data. The rms of a fit to the light curve with a constant is 0.08 mag and 0.2 mag, respectively. The detected changes are at ~3-sigma level. The quasar was in a stable state during the recent years and it might have undergone a brightening event in the past. The structure function analysis concluded that the object …
We present $Beppo$SAX observations of the $γ$-ray emitting quasars 0836+710, 1510-089 and 2230+114. All the objects have been detected in the PDS up to 100 keV and have extremely flat power-law spectra above 2 keV ($α_x$=0.3--0.5). 0836+710 shows absorption higher than the galactic value and marginal evidence for the presence of the redshifted 6.4 keV Iron line. 1510-089 shows a spectral break around 1 keV, with the low energy spectrum steeper ($α_l$=1.6) than the high energy power-law ($α_h$=0.3). The data are discussed in the light of current Inverse Compton models for the high energy emissi…
The quasar Q1208+1011 (z_{em}=3.8) is the second highest redshift double quasar ever detected. Several indications point toward it being a gravitational lensed system, although a definitive proof is still lacking. We present new evidence of its lensed nature based on the weakness of the ``proximity effect'' measured in the high resolution Lyman absorption spectrum of the QSO. A luminosity amplification as large as 22 has been derived from this analysis. Indications on the redshift of the lensing galaxy can be obtained from the analysis of the intervening heavy element absorption systems discov…
Strong evidence has recently emerged for a variation in the fine structure constant, $α\equiv e^2/\hbar c$, over the history of the Universe. This was concluded from a detailed study of the relative positions of redshifted optical quasar absorption spectra. However, {\it radio} absorption lines at high redshift offer a much higher sensitivity to a cosmological change in $α$ than optical lines. Furthermore, through the comparison of various radio transitions, \HI, OH and millimetre molecular (e.g. CO) lines, any variations in the proton g-factor, $g_p$, and the ratio of electron/proton masses, …
We present the results of a z>2.9 survey for HI 21-cm and molecular absorption in the hosts of radio quasars using the GMRT and the Tidbinbilla 70-m telescope. Previously published searches, which are overwhelmingly at redshifts of z<1, exhibit a 42% detection rate (31 out of 73 sources), and the inclusion of our survey yields a 17% detection rate (2 out of 12 sources) at z>2.5. We therefore believe that our high redshift selection is responsible for our exclusive non-detections, and find that at ultra-violet luminosities of >10e23 W/Hz, 21-cm absorption has never been detected. We also find t…
We have scanned the fields of six radio-loud quasars using the Taurus Tunable Filter to detect redshifted [OII] 3727 line-emitting galaxies at redshifts 0.8 < z < 1.3. Forty-seven new emission-line galaxy (ELG) candidates are found. This number corresponds to an average space density about 100 times that found locally and, at L([OII]) < 10^{42} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}, is 2 - 5 times greater than the field ELG density at similar redshifts, implying that radio-loud quasars inhabit sites of above-average star formation activity. The implied star-formation rates are consistent with surveys of field ga…
Optical, Infrared, X-ray, and radio wavelength studies of quasars are beginning to define the luminous quasar structure from techniques of reverberation and microlensing. An important result is that the inner quasar structure of the first identified gravitational lens, Q0957+561 A,B seems not to show the kind of structure expected for a supermassive black hole, but instead show a clean-swept interior region as due to the action of a magnetic propeller, just as expected for a MECO (Magnetic Eternally Collapsing Object) structure. Given the present state of the observations, the strongest model …
We report the first measurement of the X-ray spectrum of the z = 5.99 quasar SDSSp J130608.26+035626.3 from a 120 ks observation by the Chandra ACIS-S instrument. Between 0.5 and 7 keV, corresponding to 3.5--49 keV in the quasar rest frame, we find an energy index of 0.86 +/- 0.2, consistent with the typical indices found for radio quiet quasars at lower redshifts, and inconsistent with the index required to match the diffuse X-ray background. We have a weak indication of a redshifted Fe-K line. In comparing the counting rate between an earlier, short observation and the longer observation rep…
We image 19 quasars with 22 damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems using the F160W filter and the Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, in both direct and coronagraphic modes. We reach 5 sigma detection limits of ~H=22 in the majority of our images. We compare our observations to the observed Lyman-break population of high-redshift galaxies, as well as Bruzual & Charlot evolutionary models of present-day galaxies redshifted to the distances of the absorption systems. We predict H magnitudes for our DLAs, assuming they are producing stars like an L* Lyma…
We have searched for redshifted absorption in the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen toward `red quasars', which are extragalactic radio sources with a steep spectral drop between optical and infrared wavelengths. The success rate for detecting HI 21cm absorption toward a representative sample of such sources is 80%. This compares to the much lower success rate of 11% for detecting HI 21cm absorption associated with optically selected Mg II absorption line systems. The large neutral hydrogen column densities seen toward red quasars supports the hypothesis that these sources are reddened by dust, a…
Neutral hydrogen traces gravitational potentials. In the nearby universe, 21cm emission-line surveys show that the bulk of the HI resides in well-formed, optically-luminous galaxies. At high redshift, 21cm line absorption against background radio quasars occurs in gas-rich systems identified with the highest HI column densities -- the ``damped Lyman alpha'' quasar absorption-line systems. High spatial-resolution observations of the redshifted 21cm line absorbers measure sizes and kinematics of the neutral absorbers.
We present spectroscopic observations of the damped Ly-alpha absorber at redshift z=1.9342 seen in the spectrum of the quasar Q0151+048A. The redshift of the absorber is greater than the redshift of the quasar, so the system resembles the z(abs) ~ z(em) damped absorber at z=2.81 towards the quasar PKS0528-250. We have previously reported the detection of Ly-alpha emission from the latter absorber, one of only two damped absorbers for which Ly-alpha emission has unambiguously been detected. The resemblance between the PKS0528-250 and Q0151+048A systems is made closer by the detection of a weak …
We present XMM-Newton observations of the high redshift z=3.104, radio-loud quasar PKS 0537-286. The EPIC CCD cameras provide the highest signal-to-noise spectrum of a high-z quasar to date. The EPIC observations show that PKS 0537-286 is extremely X-ray luminous (Lx=2x10^47 erg/s), with an unusually hard X-ray spectrum (Gamma=1.27+/-0.02). The flat power-law emission extends over the whole observed energy range; there is no evidence of intrinsic absorption, which has been claimed in PKS 0537-286 and other high z quasars. However, there is evidence for weak Compton reflection. A redshifted iro…
XMM-Newton observations of the low luminosity, radio-quiet quasar Markarian 205 have revealed a unique iron K emission line profile. In marked contrast to the broad and redshifted iron K line commonly seen in ASCA observations of Seyfert 1 galaxies, we find that a substantial amount of the line flux in Mrk 205 occurs above the neutral line energy of 6.4 keV. Furthermore, we find that the iron line emission has two distinct components, a narrow, unresolved neutral line at 6.4 keV and a broadened line centred at 6.7 keV. We suggest that the most likely origin of the 6.7 keV line is from X-ray re…
The reliable theory of the evolution of heavy stars predicts the existence of a type of neutron stars which accrete a cloud of dirty hydrogen (accretors). Although they are very small (some hundreds of kilometres), the accretors should be easily observable because the accretion raises the surface temperature over 1 000 000 K, but they are never detected. The reason of this failure is a misunderstanding of the spectroscopy of hydrogen crossed by a powerful beam of short wavelengths light. Except very close to the surface, hydrogen is mostly heated by a Lyman absorption improved by a parametric …
We present new high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of the components B and C of the gravitational lensing system MG2016+112. We show that image C displays strong emission lines of Ly$α$, \NV, \CIV, \HeII, and \CIII redshifted to z=3.27, similar to images and B. We examine the emission-line flux ratios in order to put constraints on the lens models as well as to investigate the intrinsic nature of MG2016+112. The observed line ratios of B and C are consistent with those expected in the simple photo-ionization models for narrow-line region of active galactic nuclei (AGN) except for the enhanced \…
We develop and assess the potential of several powerful techniques, designed to investigate the details of reionization. First, we present a procedure to probe the neutral fraction, x_HI, using the Lyman alpha transmission statistics of high-redshift (z > 6) sources. We find that only tens of bright quasar spectra could distinguish between x_HI ~ 1 and x_HI < 0.01. A rudimentary application of such a technique on quasar SDSS J1030+0524 has yielded compelling evidence of a large neutral fraction (x_HI > 0.2) at z ~ 6. We also generate the observable, high-z supernovae (SNe) rates and quantify t…
We present near-infrared spectra of seven radio-loud quasars with a median redshift of 2.1, five of which were previously known to have Ly alpha nebulae. Extended [OIII]5007 and H alpha emission are evident around six objects, at the level of a few times 1E-16 erg/cm^2/arcsec^2/s within 2 arcsec of the nucleus (16 kpc in the adopted cosmology). Nuclear [OII]3727 is detected in three of the 5 quasars studied at this wavelength, and clearly extended in one of them. The extended [OIII] tends to be brighter on the side of the nucleus with the stronger, jet-like radio emission, indicating at least …
(abridged) The radio-quiet quasar PG1416-129 (z=0.129) exhibits atypical optical and X-ray properties. Between 1990 and 2000, in response to its optical continuum decrease, the ``classical'' broad component of Hbeta almost completely disappeared, with a factor of 10 decrease in the line flux. In the X-ray band, this object was observed by Ginga in 1988 to have the hardest quasar photon index, with Gamma=1.1+/-0.1. We present an XMM/EPIC observation of PG1416-129 performed in July 2004. We analyze the time-averaged pn spectrum of this quasar, as well as perform time-resolved spectroscopy. We fi…
High-redshift quasars (z >~ 6) drive ionization fronts into the intergalactic medium (IGM). If the thickness of the front can be measured, it can provide a novel constraint on the ionizing spectral energy distribution (SED). Here we follow the propagation of an I-front into a uniform IGM, and compute its thickness for a range of possible quasar spectra and ages. We also explore the effects of uniform and non-uniform ionizing backgrounds. We find that even for hard spectra, the fronts are initially thin, with a thickness much smaller than the mean free path of ionizing photons, but the thicknes…
Observations of resolved HeII Lyman alpha absorption in spectra of two QSO's suggest that the epoch of helium ionization occurred at z~3. Proximity zones in the spectra of the quasars (z=3.18, 3.285) at 304 A resemble Stromgren spheres, suggesting that the intergalactic medium is only singly ionized in helium. We present models of the proximity effect which include the full physics of the ionization, heating and cooling and an accurately simulated inhomogeneous gas distribution. In these models the underdense intergalactic medium is heated to at least 10,000-20,000 K after cooling to as low as…
