We exploit a set of high signal-to-noise (~70), low-resolution (R~800) quasar spectra to search for the signature of the so-called proximity effect in the HI Ly alpha forest. Our sample consists of 17 bright quasars in the redshift range 2.7<z<4.1. Analysing the spectra with the flux transmission technique, we detect the proximity effect in the sample at high significance. We use this to estimate the average intensity of the metagalactic UV background, assuming it to be constant over this redshift range. We obtain a value of J = (9+-4)x10^{-22}ergcm^{-2}s^{-1}Hz^{-1}sr^{-1}, in good agreement with previous measurements at similar z. We then apply the same procedure to individual lines of sight, finding a significant deficit in the effective optical depth close to the emission redshift in every single object except one (which by a different line of evidence does nevertheless show a noticeable proximity effect). Thus, we clearly see the proximity effect as a universal phenomenon associated with individual quasars. Using extensive Monte-Carlo simulations to quantify the error budget, we assess the expected statistical scatter in the strength of the proximity effect due to shot noise (cosmic variance). The observed scatter is larger than the predicted one, so that additional sources of scatter are required. We rule out a dispersion of spectral slopes as a significant contributor. Possible effects are long time-scale variability of the quasars and/or gravitational clustering of Ly alpha forest lines. We speculate on the possibility of using the proximity effect as a tool to constrain individual quasar ages, finding that ages between ~10^6 and ~10^8 yrs might produce a characteristic signature in the optical depth profile towards the QSO. We identify one possible candidate for this effect in our sample.
We show that the Lyman-alpha optical depth statistics in the proximity regions of quasar spectra depend on the mass of the dark matter halos hosting the quasars. This is owing to both the overdensity around the quasars and the associated infall of gas toward them. For a fiducial quasar host halo mass of (3.0+/-1.6) h^-1 x 10^12 Msun, as inferred by Croom et al. from clustering in the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey, we show that estimates of the ionizing background (Gamma^bkg) from proximity effect measurements could be biased high by a factor of ~2.5 at z=3 owing to neglecting these effects alone. Th…
The introduction of low-frequency radio arrays is expected to revolutionize the study of the reionization epoch. Observation of the contrast in redshifted 21cm emission between a large HII region and the surrounding neutral inter-galactic medium (IGM) will be the simplest and most easily interpreted signature. However the highest redshift quasars known are thought to reside in an ionized IGM. Using a semi-analytic model we describe the redshifted 21cm signal from the IGM surrounding quasars discovered using the i-drop out technique (i.e. quasars at z~6). We argue that while quasars at z<6.5 se…
With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasar's environment in absorption. We used a sample of 17 Lyman limit systems with column density N_HI > 10^19 cm^-2 selected from 149 projected quasar pair sightlines, to investigate the clustering pattern of optically thick absorbers around luminous quasars at z ~ 2.5. Specifically, we measured the quasar-absorber correlation function in the transverse direction, and found a comoving correlation length of r_0=9.2_{+1.5}_{-1.7} Mpc/h (comoving) assuming a power law correlation …
We report the discovery of a quasar at z=3.050+/-0.003, closely coincident in redshift with the isolated low-opacity feature seen near z~3.056 in the otherwise black portion of the HeII Gunn-Peterson absorption trough seen toward the z=3.286 background quasar Q0302-003, located 6.5' away on the sky. We explore plausible models for the HeIII ionization zone created by this neighboring quasar and its interception with the line of sight toward Q0302-003. At its present brightness of V=20.5 and separation of D=3.2 Mpc, the quasar can readily account for the opacity gap in the HeII absorption spect…
Lyman-alpha forest absorption spectra towards quasars at z ~ 6 show regions of enhanced transmission close to their source. Several authors have argued that the apparently small sizes of these regions indicate that quasar ionization fronts at z >~ 6 expand into a largely or partly neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). Assuming that the typical region in the IGM is reionized by z <= 6, as is suggested by Ly-a forest observations, we argue that at {\em least} 50% of the volume of the IGM was reionized before the highest redshift quasars turned on. Further, even if the IGM is as much as 50% neutral…
Investigations of He II Ly-alpha (304 A rest) absorption toward a half-dozen quasars at z~3-4 have demonstrated the great potential of helium studies of the IGM, but the current critically small sample size of clean sightlines for the He II Gunn-Peterson test limits confidence in cosmological inferences, and a larger sample is required. Although the unobscured quasar sightlines to high redshift are extremely rare, SDSS DR6 provides thousands of z>2.8 quasars. We have cross-correlated these SDSS quasars with GALEX GR2/GR3 to establish a catalog of 200 higher-confidence (~70% secure) cases of qu…
The proximity effect of metal line absorption systems in spectra of high redshift quasars and quasar pairs is investigated through the distribution of \Lyalpha forests. No strong proximity effect is found down to 500 km/sec away from a metal line absorption system for lyman $α$ clouds with $13.3\le\log\NHI <13.8$ at a redshift of $\sim 3$. Its implication on properties of high redshift galaxies and \Lyalpha clouds is discussed. More high resolution spectra of high redshift quasars and pairs of quasars (whose lines of sight are separated by $\sim 0.3h^{-1}$ to 1$h^{-1}$ Mpc) are needed so that …
We report the discovery of 14 quasars in the vicinity of HE2347-4342, one of the two quasars whose intergalactic HeII forest has been resolved with FUSE. By analysing the HI and the HeII opacity variations separately, no transverse proximity effect is detected near three foreground quasars of HE2347-4342: QSOJ23503-4328 (z=2.282, $\vartheta=3.59$ arcmin), QSOJ23500-4319 (z=2.302, $\vartheta=8.77$ arcmin) and QSOJ23495-4338 (z=2.690, $\vartheta=16.28$ arcmin). This is primarily due to line contamination and overdensities probably created by large-scale structure. By comparing the HI absorption …
We study the density field around z_em > 4 quasars using high quality medium spectral resolution ESI-Keck spectra (R~4300, SNR > 25) of 45 high-redshift quasars selected from a total of 95 spectra. This large sample considerably increases the statistics compared to previous studies. The redshift evolution of the mean photo-ionization rate and the median optical depth of the intergalactic medium (IGM) are derived statistically from the observed transmitted flux and the pixel optical depth probability distribution function respectively. This is used to study the so-called proximity effect, that …
New optical and infrared observations along the sight-line toward the quasar OI 363 (0738+313) are presented and discussed. Excluding systems which lack confirming UV spectroscopic observations of the actual Lyman alpha line, this sight-line presently contains the two lowest-redshift classical damped Lyman alpha (DLA) quasar absorption line systems known (i.e. with N(HI) \ge 2 x 10^{20} atoms cm^{-2}), one at z(abs)=0.0912 and the other at z(abs)=0.2212. The z=0.09 DLA galaxy appears to be an extended low surface brightness galaxy which is easily visible only in infrared images and shows rich …
We report the discovery of the faint (V=21.7) quasar QSO03027-0010 at z=2.808 in the vicinity of Q0302-003, one of the few quasars observed with STIS to study intergalactic HeII absorption. Together with another newly discovered QSO at z=2.29, there are now 6 QSOs known near the line of sight towards Q0302-003, of which 4 are located within the redshift region 2.76<=z<=3.28 covered by the STIS spectrum. We correlated the opacity variations in the HI and HeII Lyman forest spectra with the locations of known quasars. There is no significant proximity effect in the HI Lyman alpha forest for any o…
We report on our recent detection of the transverse proximity effect of 4 foreground quasars near Q0302-003 (z=3.285) as a local hardness fluctuation in the spectral shape of the intergalactic UV radiation field, found by correlating the HI Lyαabsorption with the corresponding HeII Lyαabsorption. We argue that the spectral hardness is a sensitive physical measure to reveal the influence of quasars onto the UV background over scales of several Mpc, and that it breaks the density degeneracy hampering the search for the elusive transverse proximity effect. From the transverse proximity effect on …
In this paper we present new ESO/VLT FORS1 and ISAAC images of the fields around eight gravitationally lensed quasars: CTQ414, HE0230-2130, LBQS1009-0252, B1030+074, HE1104-1805, B1359+154, H1413+117 and HE2149-2745. When available and deep enough, HST/WFPC2 data were also used to infer the photometric redshifts of the galaxies around the quasars. The search of galaxy overdensities in space and redshift, as well as a weak-shear analysis and a mass reconstruction are presented in this paper. We find that there are most probably galaxy groups towards CTQ414, HE0230-2130, B1359+154, H1413+117 and…
We use the results of a set of three-dimensional SPH-Treecode simulations which model the formation and early evolution of disk galaxies, including the generation of heavy elements by star formation, to investigate the effects of dust absorption in quasar absorption line systems. Using a simple prescription for the production of dust, we have compared the column density, zinc abundance and optical depth properties of our models to the known properties of Damped Lyman alpha systems. We find that a significant fraction of our model galaxy disks have a higher column density than any observed DLA …
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 3 (SDSS DR3) we investigate how narrow (<700km/s) CIV and MgII quasar absorption line systems are distributed around quasars. The CIV absorbers lie in the redshift range 1.6 < z < 4 and the MgII absorbers in the range 0.4<z<2.2. By correlating absorbers with quasars on different but neighbouring lines-of-sight, we measure the clustering of absorbers around quasars on comoving scales between 4 and 30Mpc. The observed comoving correlation lengths are r_o~5h^-1Mpc, similar to those observed for bright galaxies at these redshifts. Comparing…
(Abridged) With the goal of investigating the nature of OVI absorbers at high redshifts, we study the effects of proximity to the background quasar. In a sample of sixteen quasars at z(QSO) between 2.14 and 2.87 observed at 6.6 km/s resolution with VLT/UVES, we detect 35 OVI absorption-line systems lying within 8000 km/s of z(QSO). The systems can be categorized into 9 strong and 26 weak OVI absorbers. The strong absorbers are defined by the presence of either broad, fully saturated OVI absorption or partial coverage of the continuum source, and have log N(OVI)>~15.0; these systems are intrins…
We carried out a Subaru and UKIRT near infrared imaging survey for H-alpha emitting galaxies around two pair quasar systems (Q0301-005/Q0302-003 and Q2343+125/Q2344+125), and a triple quasar system (KP76/KP77/KP78). Narrow band near infrared filters covering the H-alpha emission expected for galaxies at the confirmed C IV absorption redshift toward the quasar systems were used for this survey. These quasar pairs or triplet are separated at most by 17 arcmins (~5 h^-1 Mpc in proper distance) from each other on the sky, and have common C IV absorption lines at almost identical redshifts at z=2.2…
We report on new high-resolution near-infrared images of the gravitationally lensed radio source PKS1830-211, a quasar at z=2.507. These adaptive optics observations, taken with the Very Large Telescope (VLT), are further improved through image deconvolution. They confirm the presence of a second object along the line of sight to the quasar, in addition to the previously known spiral galaxy. This additional object is clearly extended in our images. However, its faint luminosity does not allow to infer any photometric redshift. If this galaxy is located in the foreground of PKS1830-211, it comp…
We used 40 high resolution, high S/N QSO spectra at 2.1<z<4.7 to search for the signature of the proximity effect in the HI Lyalpha forest. Comparing the effective optical depth near each QSO with the expected one, we clearly detect the proximity effect on the combined QSO sample and towards each individual QSO. The observed proximity effect strength distribution (PESD) is asymmetric towards a weak effect. We demonstrate that this is not simply an effect of gravitational clustering around QSOs. Comparing simulated PESDs with observations, we argue that the averaging method to determine the UVB…
We point out the peculiarities of the line of sight of Q0302-003 which was recently used to estimate the He II opacity at $z \sim 3.285$. This line of sight contains a large void in Lyman $α$ clouds, in the region used for the He II opacity observation, and the void is thought to be caused by the ionizing radiation from a foreground quasar (Dobrzycki and Bechtold 1991). If this is true, then the radiation from the foreground quasar is more relevant in the region used for the estimation of the He II opacity than the diffuse UV background radiation. We argue that in that case the observed opacit…
The Ly-alpha forest provides important constraints on the smoothness of the universe on large scales. We calculate the flux distribution along line-of-sight to quasars in a universe made of randomly distributed clumps, each of them with a Rayleigh-L`evi fractal structure. We consider the probability distribution function of the normalised flux in the line-of-sight to quasars. We show that the truncated clustering hierarchy model shows far too many voids along the line-of-sight to quasars compared with the observed flux distribution and the distribution in a Cold Dark Matter model. This support…
We investigate the nature of CO emission from z~6 quasars by combining non-LTE radiative transfer calculations with merger-driven models of z~6 quasar formation that arise naturally in LCDM cosmological simulations. We consider four model quasars formed in 10^12-10^13 M_sun halos from different merging histories. Our main results follow. Owing to massive starbursts and funneling of dense gas into the nuclear regions of merging galaxies, the CO is highly excited and the flux density peaks between J=5-8. The CO morphology of z~6 quasars often exhibits multiple emission peaks which arise from H2 …
There are two possible causes of variability in gravitationally lensed quasars: intrinsic fluctuations of the quasar and ``microlensing'' by compact objects along the line of sight. If disentangled from each other, microlens-induced variability can be used to study two cosmological issues of great interest: the size and brightness profile of quasars on one hand, and the distribution of compact (dark) matter along the line of sight on the other. Here we present a summary of recent observational evidence for quasar microlensing as well as of theoretical progress in the field. Particular emphasis…
We present a deep ($\sim$85 ksec) ASCA observation of the prototype Broad Absorption Line Quasar (BALQSO) PHL 5200. This is the best X-ray spectrum of a BALQSO yet. We find that (1) the source is not intrinsically X-ray weak, (2) the line of sight absorption is very strong with N_H=5 x 10^{23} cm^{-2}, (3) the absorber does not cover the source completely; the covering fraction is about 90%. This is consistent with the large optical polarization observed in this source, implying multiple lines of sight. The most surprising result of this observation is that (4) the spectrum of this BALQSO is n…
We present a method for studying the proximity effect and the density structure around redshift z=2-3 quasars. It is based on the probability distribution of Lyman-alpha pixel optical depths and its evolution with redshift. We validate the method using mock spectra obtained from hydrodynamical simulations, and then apply it to a sample of 12 bright quasars at redshifts 2-3 observed with UVES at the VLT-UT2 Kueyen ESO telescope. These quasars do not show signatures of associated absorption and have a mean monochromatic luminosity of 5.4 10^{31} h^{-2} erg/s/Hz at the Lyman limit. The observed d…
Spectral differences between lensed quasar image components are common. Since lensing is intrinsically achromatic, these differences are typically explained as the effect of either microlensing, or as light path time delays sampling intrinsic quasar spectral variability. Here we advance a novel third hypothesis: some spectral differences are due to small line-of-sight differences through quasar disk wind outflows. In particular, we propose that variable spectral differences seen only in component A of the widest separation lens SDSSJ1004+4112 are due to differential absorption along the sightl…
Groups and clusters of galaxies hosting a quasar can be found through the detection of Lyman-alpha absorption lines beyond the quasar redshift. The effect occurs whenever the distortion to the redshift distribution of Lyman-alpha clouds induced by the cluster potential extends beyond the proximity effect of the quasar. Based on CDM cosmological models for the evolution of structure, we predict the probability for finding lines beyond the quasar redshift ($z_{abs}>z_Q$) under the assumption that the physical properties of Lyman-alpha clouds are not affected by flows on large scales (1 Mpc and m…
We present the first near-IR spectroscopy of the z=1.5 radio-loud BALQSO FIRST J155633.8+351758. Both the Balmer decrement and the slope of the rest-frame UV-optical continuum independently suggest a modest amount of extinction along the line of sight to the BLR (E(B-V)~0.5 for SMC-type screen extinction at the QSO redshift). The implied gas column density along the line of sight is much less than is implied by the weak X-ray flux of the object, suggesting that either the BLR and BAL region have a low dust-to-gas ratio, or that the rest-frame optical light encounters significantly lower mean c…
We present our investigation into the physical conditions of the gas in five intervening quasar absorption line systems along the line of sight toward the quasar PG 0117+213, with redshifts of z=0.57, z=0.72, z=1.04, z=1.32 and z=1.34. Photoionization modeling of HST, Keck I, and Palomar data, using the code Cloudy, is employed to derive densities and metallicities of the multiple phases of gas required to fit the absorption profile for each system. We discuss the implications of these models for galaxy evolution, including the interpretation of ``CIV deficiency'' and damped Lyman alpha absorb…
The quasar Q1208+1011 (z_{em}=3.8) is the second highest redshift double quasar ever detected. Several indications point toward it being a gravitational lensed system, although a definitive proof is still lacking. We present new evidence of its lensed nature based on the weakness of the ``proximity effect'' measured in the high resolution Lyman absorption spectrum of the QSO. A luminosity amplification as large as 22 has been derived from this analysis. Indications on the redshift of the lensing galaxy can be obtained from the analysis of the intervening heavy element absorption systems discov…
We describe the first optical survey of absorption systems associated with galaxy clusters at z= 0.3-0.9. We have cross-correlated SDSS DR3 quasars with high-redshift cluster/group candidates from the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey. We have found 442 quasar-cluster pairs for which the MgII doublet might be detected at a transverse (physical) distance d<2 Mpc from the cluster centers. To investigate the incidence (dN/dz) and equivalent-width distribution n(W) of MgII systems at cluster redshifts, two statistical samples were drawn out of these pairs: one made of high-resolution spectroscopic quasa…
We examine the recent report by Prochter et al. (2006) that gamma-ray burst (GRB) sight lines have a much higher incidence of strong MgII absorption than quasar sight lines. We propose that the discrepancy is due to the different beam sizes of GRBs and quasars, and that the intervening MgII systems are clumpy with the dense part of each cloudlet of a similar size as the quasars, i.e. < 10^16 cm, but bigger than GRBs. We also discuss observational predictions of our proposed model. Most notably, in some cases the intervening MgII absorbers in GRB spectra should be seen varying, and quasars with…
We show that by analyzing the spectra of lensed broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs), it is possible to reveal key properties of the outflowing gas in the inner regions of these objects. This results from the fact that each image of the quasar corresponds to a different line of sight through the outflow. This combined with dynamical estimates for the location of the flow, adds new information concerning the lateral, non line of sight structure of the absorbing gas. Here we consider a sample of lensed BALQSOs and note that the similarity of BAL profiles of different images of the same quasar…
We report on a study of the surface density of Extremely Red Objects (EROs) in the fields of 13 radio-loud quasars at 1.8 < z < 3.0 covering a total area of 61.7 sqr arcmin. There is a large variation in the ERO surface density from field to field, and as many as 30--40 % of the fields have roughly 4--5 times more EROs than what is expected from a random distribution. The average surface density exceeds the value found in large random-field surveys by a factor of 2--3, a result which is significant at the >3 sigma level. Hence, it appears that the quasar lines of sight are biassed towards regi…
(Abridged) We have discovered a strong DLA coincident in redshift with the faint QSO Q2343-BX415 (R = 20.2, z_em = 2.57393). Follow-up observations at intermediate spectral resolution reveal that the metal lines associated with this 'proximate' DLA consist of two sets of absorption components. One set is moving towards the quasar with velocities of ~ 150-600 km/s; this gas is highly ionized and does not fully cover the continuum source, suggesting that it is physically close to the active nucleus. The other, which accounts for most of the neutral gas, is blueshifted relative to the QSO, with t…
The results of a sub-millimeter survey of SDSS broad CIV absorption line quasars is discussed. It is found that the sub-millimeter flux distribution of BAL quasars is similar to that of non-BAL quasars. This is consistent with the idea that all quasars contain broad absorption line regions, but only a fraction of them are visible along our line-of-sight. The observations are inconsistent with BAL quasars being observed at a special evolutionary epoch co-inciding with a high star-formation rate and dust mass.
MCG+00-32-16 is the galaxy closest in position-velocity space to the lowest redshift Ly$α$ absorber along the line-of-sight to the quasar 3C 273. Its projected separation is 204 (d/19 Mpc) kpc, where d is the distance from the Milky Way to the galaxy, and the redshift difference is only 94 km/s; HI 1225+01 is slightly closer in projected separation to the absorber, but has a greater redshift difference. We present HI synthesis array mapping and CCD photometry in B and R for MCG+00-32-16. The HI disk is rotating in such a way that the side of the galaxy closer to the sight-line to the quasar ha…
In radio bands, the study of compact radio sources can be affected by propagation effects through the Interstellar Medium. These are usually attributed to the presence of turbulent intervening plasma along the line of sight. Here, two of such effects are presented. The line of sight of B 2005+403 passes through the heavily scattered region of Cygnus, which causes substantial angular broadening of the source images obtained at frequencies between 0.6 GHz and 8 GHz. At higher frequencies, however the intrinsic source structure shines through. Therefore, multi-frequency VLBI observations allow to…
We present a new explanation for the very wide absorption features in quasar spectra. In our model, a very wide absorption feature will originate, when the line of sight crosses a bubble wall tangentially. We demonstrate this on the quasar pair (2138-4427), (2139-4434). Both show two very wide absorption lines in their spectra at the same redshift. The bubble wall model can explain these observations in low density Friedmann-Lemaitre models with spherical metric. It contradicts models with euclidian or hyperbolic metric.
We have selected quasars with X-ray colors suggestive of a low energy cut-off, from the ROSAT PSPC pointed archive. We examine the radio and optical properties of these 13 quasars. Five out of the seven quasars with good optical spectra show associated optical absorption lines, with two having high delta-v candidate systems. Two other cut-off quasars show reddening associated with the quasar. We conclude that absorption is highly likely to be the cause of the X-ray cut-offs, and that the absorbing material associated with the quasars, not intervening along the line-of-sight. The suggestion tha…
Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Data Release 5, we survey proximate damped Lya systems (PDLAs): absorption line systems with HI column density N(HI)> 2x10^20 cm^{-2} at velocity separation dv < 3000 km/s from their background quasar. These absorbers are physically associated with their background quasars, and their statistics allow us to study quasar environments out to z~5. However, the large ionizing flux emitted by a quasar can ionize the neutral gas in a nearby galaxy possibly giving rise to a ``proximity effect'', analogous to the similar effect observed in the Lya forest. From a samp…
We present spectroscopic observations of the damped Ly-alpha absorber at redshift z=1.9342 seen in the spectrum of the quasar Q0151+048A. The redshift of the absorber is greater than the redshift of the quasar, so the system resembles the z(abs) ~ z(em) damped absorber at z=2.81 towards the quasar PKS0528-250. We have previously reported the detection of Ly-alpha emission from the latter absorber, one of only two damped absorbers for which Ly-alpha emission has unambiguously been detected. The resemblance between the PKS0528-250 and Q0151+048A systems is made closer by the detection of a weak …
The startling discovery of Prochter et al. (2006) that the frequency of very strong (W_r(2796)>1 A) MgII absorbers along gamma-ray burst (GRB) lines of sight ([dN/dz]_{GRB} = 0.90) is more than three times the frequency along quasar lines of sight ([dN/dz]_{QSO} = 0.24), over similar redshift ranges, has yet to be understood. We reconsider the possibility that the excess of very strong MgII absorbers toward GRBs is intrinsic either to the GRBs themselves or to their immediate environment, and associated with bulk outflows with velocities as large as v_{max} ~ 0.3c. In order to examine this hyp…
We have obtained spatially resolved spectra of the z=3.911 triply imaged QSO APM08279+5255 using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We study the line of sight equivalent width (EW) differences and velocity shear of high and low ionization absorbers (including a damped Lyman alpha [DLA] system identified in a spatially unresolved ground based spectrum) in the three lines of sight. We find that high ionization systems (primarily CIV absorbers) do not exhibit strong EW variations on scales <0.4 kpc; their fractional EW differences are typica…
We present spectroscopic observations for quasars Q0107-025A, Q0107-025B, and Q0107-0232. For the first time, all data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope's GHRS and FOS for these three quasars are combined. Ly-alpha absorbers selected from the spectra can be used to trace the coherence of the intergalactic medium (IGM) on scales of 1-2 h_{70}^{-1} Mpc over the redshift range 0.4 < z_a < 0.9. A new analysis of double and triple absorber coincidences derived from the improved spectra is performed. Automated line-selection algorithms were used to detect absorption lines in the QSO spectra; …
VLA imaging at kiloparsec-scale resolution of sixteen core-dominated radio-loud QSOs is presented. Many objects appear to display variable radio emission and their radio morphologies are significantly smaller than those of steep-spectrum quasars, consistent with these objects being observed at sight lines close to their (relativistic, $γ\approx$ 4-7) jet axes. The usefulness of the radio source orientation indicator R_V, being defined as ratio of radio core and rest frame optical V-band luminosity, is confirmed.
The origin and growth of magnetic fields in galaxies is still something of an enigma. It is generally assumed that seed fields are amplified over time through the dynamo effect, but there are few constraints on the timescale. It has recently been demonstrated that field strengths as traced by rotation measures of distant quasars are comparable to those seen today, but it was unclear whether the high fields were in the exotic environments of the quasars themselves or distributed along the line of sight. Here we demonstrate that the quasars with strong MgII absorption lines are unambiguously ass…
We look for signs of the H~I transverse proximity effect in the spectra of 130 QSO pairs, most with transverse separations in the plane of the sky of 0.1 -- 3 Mpc at z ~ 2.2. We expected to see a decrease in Lyman-alpha forest HI absorption in the spectrum of background QSOs near the position of foreground QSOs. Instead we see no change in the absorption in front of the foreground QSOs, and we see evidence for a 50% increase in the absorption out to 6 Mpc behind the foreground QSOs. Further, we see no change in the H I absorption along the line-of-sight to the foreground QSOs, the normal line-…
Numerical simulations and theoretical studies of the gravitational microlensing effect of a population of small bodies distributed along the line of sight to a compact light source such as a quasar indicate that caustic crossing effects will be present given a sufficiently large optical depth to lensing. These events will produce characteristic patterns in the quasar light curve. In this paper we use a large sample of quasar light curves to search for features with the properties of caustic crossing events. Two good candidates are presented which it is argued are not easily explained as intrin…
We develop and assess the potential of several powerful techniques, designed to investigate the details of reionization. First, we present a procedure to probe the neutral fraction, x_HI, using the Lyman alpha transmission statistics of high-redshift (z > 6) sources. We find that only tens of bright quasar spectra could distinguish between x_HI ~ 1 and x_HI < 0.01. A rudimentary application of such a technique on quasar SDSS J1030+0524 has yielded compelling evidence of a large neutral fraction (x_HI > 0.2) at z ~ 6. We also generate the observable, high-z supernovae (SNe) rates and quantify t…
We present the transverse flux correlation function of the Lyman-alpha forest in quasar absorption spectra at z~2.1 from VLT-FORS and VLT-UVES observations of a total of 32 pairs of quasars; 26 pairs with separations in the range 0.6<theta<4 arcmin and 6 pairs with 4<theta<10 arcmin. Correlation is detected at the 3sigma level up to separations of the order of ~4 arcmin (or ~4.4 h^{-1} Mpc comoving at z=2.1 for Omega_{m}=0.3 and Omega_{Lambda}=0.7). We have, furthermore, measured the longitudinal correlation function at a somewhat higher mean redshift (z=2.39) from 20 lines of sight observed w…
Variability in gravitationally lensed quasars can be due to intrinsic fluctuations of the quasar or due to ``microlensing'' by compact objects along the line of sight. If disentangled from each other, microlens-induced variability can be used to study two cosmological issues of great interest, the size and brightness profile of quasars on one hand, and the distribution of compact (dark) matter along the line of sight on the other. In particular, multi-waveband observations are useful for this goal. In this review recent theoretical progress as well as observational evidence for quasar microlen…
In this Letter, the broad emission line (BEL) profiles of superluminal quasars with apparent jet velocities, $β_{a}>10$, (ultraluminal QSOs, or ULQSOs hereafter) are studied as a diagnostic of the velocity field of the BEL emitting gas in quasars. The ULQSOs are useful because they satisfy a very strict kinematical constraint, their parsec scale jets must be propagating within $12^{\circ}$ of the line of sight. We know the orientation of these objects with great certainty. The large BEL FWHM, $\sim 3,000 \mathrm{km/s} - 6,000 \mathrm{km/s}$, in ULQSOs tend to indicate that the BEL gas has a la…
We make use of hydrodynamical simulations of the intergalactic medium (IGM) to create model quasar absorption spectra. We compare these model spectra with the observed Keck spectra of three z>6.2 quasars with full Gunn-Peterson troughs: SDSS J1148+5251 (z=6.42), SDSS J1030+0524 (z=6.28), and SDSS J1623+3112 (z=6.22). We fit the probability density distributions (PDFs) of the observed Ly alpha optical depths with those generated from the simulation, by exploring a range of values for the size of the quasar's surrounding HII region, R_S, the volume-weighted mean neutral hydrogen fraction in the …
