We formulate the information paradox in de Sitter space in terms of the no-cloning principle of quantum mechanics. We show that energy conservation puts an upper bound on the maximum entropy available to any de Sitter observer. Combined with a general result on the average information in a quantum subsystem, this guarantees that an observer in de Sitter space cannot obtain even a single bit of information from the de Sitter horizon, thereby preventing any observable violations of the quantum no-cloning principle, in support of observer complementarity.
The correspondence between string theory in Anti-de Sitter space and super Yang Mills theory is an example of the Holographic principle according to which a quantum theory with gravity must be describable by a boundary theory. However, arguments given so far are incomplete because, while the bulk theory has been related to a boundary theory, the holographic bound saying that the boundary theory has only one bit of information per Planck area has not been justified. We show here that this bound is the physical interpretation of one of the unusual aspects of the correspondence between Anti-de Si…

Whereas a static observer in de Sitter (dS) space detects thermal radiation emitted by the horizon, the dS isometries impose that the radiation is in equilibrium with the background. This implies that for the static observer to find the information paradox, the background must be deformed to quasi-dS space in which the dS isometries are spontaneously broken. We study the condition that the information paradox arises in quasi-dS space with the monotonically increasing horizon size which is used to describe the inflationary cosmology. For this purpose, the dimensional reduction of three-dimensio…
We formulate a version of the information paradox in de Sitter spacetime and show that it is solved by the emergence of entanglement islands in the context of the DS/dS correspondence; in particular, the entanglement entropy of a subregion obeys a time-dependent Page curve. Our construction works in general spacetime dimensions and keeps the graviton massless. We interpret the resulting behavior of the entanglement entropy using double holography. It suggests that the spatial distribution of microscopic degrees of freedom depends on descriptions, as in the case of a black hole. In the static (…
The possibility of stable or quasi--stable Planck mass black hole remnants as solution to the black hole information paradox is commonly believed phenomenologically unacceptable: since we have to expect a black hole remnant for every possible initial state, the number of remnants should be infinite. This would lead to remnant pair production in any physical process with a total available energy roughly exceeding the Planck mass, against trivial evidences. In this note I point out that the number of remnants in our Universe could be finite, at least if the value of the cosmological constant is …
Entanglement islands play a crucial role in our understanding of how Hawking radiation encodes information in a black hole, but their relevance in cosmological spacetimes is less clear. In this paper, we continue our investigation of information recovery in de Sitter space and construct a two-dimensional model of gravity containing a domain wall that interpolates between de Sitter space and Rindler space. The Rindler wedges introduce weakly-gravitating asymptotic regions from which de Sitter space can be probed, yielding an outside perspective of the cosmological horizon. In contrast to earlie…
Recent developments on holography and quantum information physics suggest that quantum information theory come to play a fundamental role in understanding quantum gravity. Cosmology, on the other hand, plays a significant role in testing quantum gravity effects. How to apply this idea to a realistic universe is still missing. Here we show some concepts in quantum information theory have their cosmological descriptions. Particularly, we show complexity of a tensor network can be regarded as a Fisher information measure(FIM) of a dS universe, followed by several observations: (i) the holographic…
We provide a background-independent formulation of the holographic principle. It permits the construction of embedded hypersurfaces (screens) on which the entire bulk information can be stored at a density of no more than one bit per Planck area. Screens are constructed explicitly for AdS, Minkowski, and de Sitter spaces with and without black holes, and for cosmological solutions. The properties of screens provide clues about the character of a manifestly holographic theory.
We study the motion of thin-shell bubbles and their tunneling in anti de Sitter (AdS) background. We are interested in the case when the outside of a shell is a Schwarzschild-AdS space (false vacuum) and the inside of it is an AdS space with a lower vacuum energy (true vacuum). If a collapsing true vacuum bubble is created, classically it will form a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. However, this collapsing bubble can tunnel to a bouncing bubble that moves out to spatial infinity. Then, although the classical causal structure of a collapsing true vacuum bubble has the singularity and the event ho…
We study quantum gravity constraints on inflationary model building. Our approach is based on requiring the entropy associated to a given inflationary model to be less than that of the de Sitter entropy. We give two prescriptions for determining the inflationary entropy, based on either `bits per unit area' or entanglement entropy. The existence of transPlanckian flat directions, necessary for large tensor modes in the CMB, correlates with an inflationary entropy greater than that allowed by de Sitter space. Independently these techniques also constrain or exclude de Sitter models with large-r…
We propose an explicitly calculable example of holography on 3-dimensional de Sitter space by providing a prescription to analytic continue a higher-spin holography on 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Applying the de Sitter holography, we explicitly compute bulk correlation functions on 3-dimensional de Sitter space at late time in a higher-spin gravity. These expressions are consistent with recent analysis based on bulk Feynman diagrams. Our explicit computations reveal how holographic computations could provide fruitful information.
In this paper, we have analyzed the information paradox and its resolution using island proposal in Schwarzschild de-Sitter black hole spacetime. First, we study the information paradox for the black hole patch by treating de-Sitter patch on both sides as a frozen background (by inserting thermal opaque membrane) and then we carry out similar study for de-Sitter patch also. In both cases, when there is no island surface then the entanglement entropy has as usual the linear time dependence whereas in the presence of an island surface entanglement entropy become constant (equal to twice of therm…
We discuss some implications of recent progress in understanding the black hole information paradox for complementarity in de Sitter space. Extending recent work by two of the authors, we describe a bulk procedure that allows information expelled through the cosmological horizon to be received by an antipodal observer. Generically, this information transfer takes a scrambling time $t = H^{-1}\log(S_{\rm dS})$. We emphasize that this procedure relies crucially on selection of the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, interpreted as the thermofield double state that maximally entangles two antipodal static…
Three exact solutions say $ϕ_0$ of massless scalar theories on Euclidean space, i.e. $D=6 ϕ^3$, $D=4 ϕ^4$ and $D=3 ϕ^6$ models are obtained which share similar properties. The information geometry of their moduli spaces coincide with the Euclidean ${AdS}_7$, ${AdS}_5$ and ${AdS}_4$ respectively on which $ϕ_0$ can be described as a stable tachyon. In D=4 we recognize that the SU(2) instanton density is proportional to $ϕ_0^4$. The original action $S[ϕ]$ written in terms of new scalars ${\tilde ϕ}=ϕ-ϕ_0$ is shown to be equivalent to an interacting scalar theory on $D$-dimensional de Sitter backg…
Recent works have revealed that quantum extremal islands can contribute to the fine-grained entropy of black hole radiation reproducing the unitary Page curve. In this paper, we use these results to assess if an observer in de Sitter space can decode information hidden behind their cosmological horizon. By computing the fine-grained entropy of the Gibbons-Hawking radiation in a region where gravity is weak we find that this is possible, but the observer's curiosity comes at a price. At the same time the island appears, which happens much earlier than the Page time, a singularity forms which th…
When the slow-roll parameter $ε_H$ is smaller than $H^2/M_{\rm Pl}^2$, the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton after the horizon crossing are large enough to realize eternal inflation. Whereas they do not generate a sufficient amount of density fluctuation of the inflaton to produce the black hole in quasi-de Sitter space, they can also generate the sizeable density fluctuation of the radiation when the number of degrees of freedom increases rapidly in time, as predicted by the distance conjecture. We argue that the condition that the density fluctuation of the radiation is not large enough t…

An information-geometrical interpretation of AdS3/CFT2 correspondence is given. In particular, we consider an inverse problem in which the classical spacetime metric is given in advance and then we find what is the proper quantum information that is well stored into the spacetime. We see that the Fisher metric plays a central role on this problem. Actually, if we start with the two-dimensional hyperbolic space, a constant-time surface in AdS3, the resulting singular value spectrum of the quantum state shows power law for the correlation length with conformal dimension proportional to the curva…
We propose that for every event in de Sitter space, there is a CPT-conjugate event at its antipode. Such an ``elliptic'' $Z_2$-identification of de Sitter space provides a concrete realization of observer complementarity: every observer has complete information. It is possible to define the analog of an S-matrix for quantum gravity in elliptic de Sitter space that is measurable by all observers. In a holographic description, S-matrix elements may be represented by correlation functions of a dual (conformal field) theory that lives on the single boundary sphere. S-matrix elements are de Sitter-…
Information entropies associated with the energy density in position and momentum spaces are build for an anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole. These quantities, that satisfy an entropic uncertainty relation, vary with the temperature. The higher is the black hole temperature, the greater/smaller is the information encoded respectively in the position/momentum distributions of energy. On the other hand, as it is well know, AdS black holes are subject to the Hawking Page phase transition. The amplitude for dominance of the black hole phase over the thermal AdS phase increases with the temperature. S…
John Wheeler coined the phrase "it from bit" or "bit from it" in the 1980s. However, much of the interest in the connection between information, i.e. "bits", and physical objects, i.e. "its", stems from the discovery that black holes have characteristics of thermodynamic systems having entropies and temperatures. This insight led to the information loss problem -- what happens to the "bits" when the black hole has evaporated away due to the energy loss from Hawking radiation? In this essay we speculate on a radical answer to this question using the assumption of self-similarity of quantum corr…
We investigate the possibility that, in a combined theory of quantum mechanics and gravity, de Sitter space is described by finitely many states. The notion of observer complementarity, which states that each observer has complete but complementary information, implies that, for a single observer, the complete Hilbert space describes one side of the horizon. Observer complementarity is implemented by identifying antipodal states with outgoing states. The de Sitter group acts on S-matrix elements. Despite the fact that the de Sitter group has no nontrivial finite-dimensional unitary representat…
Holographic tensor networks associated to tilings of (1+1)-dimensional de Sitter spacetime are introduced. Basic features of these networks are discussed, compared, and contrasted with conjectured properties of quantum gravity in de Sitter spacetime. Notably, we highlight a correspondence between the quantum information capacity of the network and the cosmological constant.
The Fubini's idea to introduce a fundamental scale of hadron phenomena by means of dilatation non-invariant vacuum state in the frame work of a scale invariant Lagrangian field theory is recalled. The Fubini vacua is invariant under the de Sitter subgroup of the full conformal group. We obtain a finite entropy for the quantum state corresponding to the classical Fubini vacua in Euclidean space-time resembeling the entropy of the de Sitter vacua. In Minkowski space-time it is shown that the Fubini vacua is mainly a bath of radiation with Rayleigh-Jeans distribution for the low energy radiation.…
In inflationary cosmology the quasi de Sitter graceful exit allows us to measure the quantum features of the primordial dS phase, in particular, the lack of scale invariance parametrized by the spectral index $n_s$. In this review we summarize previous work on how the underlying primordial scaling law is implemented in the dS quantum Fisher information of the dS planar ground state (dSQFI). At large scales the dSQFI unequivocally sets, without any qdS input, the value of $n_s$ to be $0.9672$. This value is independent of the tensor to scalar ratio whose value requires model dependent input. In…
We study the dynamical behavior of the dilaton in the background of three-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter space which is inspired from the low-energy string effective action. The perturbation analysis around the cosmological horizon of Kerr-de Sitter space reveals a mixing between the dilaton and other fields. Introducing a gauge (dilaton gauge), we can disentangle this mixing completely and obtain one decoupled dilaton equation. However it turns out that this belongs to the tachyon. The stability of de Sitter solution with J=0 is discussed. Finally we compute the dilaton absorption cross section t…
Consequences of Schrödinger's antipodal identification on quantum field theory in de Sitter space are investigated. The elliptic $\mathbb{Z}_2$ identification provides observers with complete information. We show that a suitable confinement on dimension of the elliptic de Sitter space guarantees the existence of globally defined spinors and orientable $dS/\mathbb{Z}_2$ manifold. In Beltrami coordinates, we give exact solutions of scalar and spinor fields. The CPT invariance of quantum field theory on the elliptic de Sitter space is presented explicitly.
In this paper a de Sitter Space version of Black Hole Complementarity is formulated which states that an observer in de Sitter Space describes the surrounding space as a sealed finite temperature cavity bounded by a horizon which allows no loss of information. We then discuss the implications of this for the existence of boundary correlators in the hypothesized dS/cft correspondence. We find that dS complementarity precludes the existence of the appropriate limits. We find that the limits exist only in approximations in which the entropy of the de Sitter Space is infinite. The reason that the …
De Sitter Quantum Gravity is a Yang-Mills theory based on the de Sitter or SO(4,1) group and a promising candidate for a quantum theory of gravity. In this paper, an exact, static, spherically symmetric solution of the classical equations is derived. I show that when the Schwarzchild radius to distance ratio is at post-Newtonian order the theory agrees with general relativity for all parameters but that, once the ratio becomes closer to unity, they differ. At the Schwarzchild radius from a black hole singularity, general relativity predicts an event horizon, which has become a controversial to…
If cosmological constant is positive, a black hole is naturally described by the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution with two horizons. We use the global method to extract the topological information and the selection rule for the Gibbons-Hawking temperature for the thermal vacua. These are related to the Euler number of the Euclidean section whose topology is more complicated than expected. We also point out the failure of the usual local method of conical singularity approach in dealing with multi-horizon scenarios.
In this paper we consider a scenario, consisting of a de Sitter phase followed by a phase described by a scale factor $a(t)\sim t^{q}$, where $1/3<q<1$, which can be viewed as an inflationary toy model. It is argued that this scenario naively could lead to an information paradox. We propose that the phenomenon of Poincaré recurrences plays a crucial role in the resolution of the paradox. We also comment on the relevance of these results to inflation and the CMBR.
We study 4-dimensional Schwarzschild de Sitter black holes in the regime where the black hole mass is small compared with the de Sitter scale. Then the de Sitter temperature is very low compared with that of the black hole and we study the black hole, approximating the ambient de Sitter space as a frozen classical background. We consider distant observers in the static diamond, far from the black hole but within the cosmological horizon. Using 2-dimensional tools, we find that the entanglement entropy of radiation exhibits linear growth in time, indicative of the information paradox for the bl…
We study holographic entanglement and information scrambling in de-Sitter (dS) space in the context of the DS/dS correspondence. We find that our previously identified non-local entanglement structure of dS vacua can be extended out of the time-reflection symmetric slice. We extend the geometry to a two-sided configuration and calculate the zero-time mutual information between two intervals on different sides when there is a localized shock wave in the bulk. Interestingly, we find that the information scrambling time saturates the fast scrambler bound proposed by Sekino and Susskind and that t…
We study a quantum field in elliptic de Sitter space dS_4/Z_2 - the spacetime obtained from identifying antipodal points in dS_4. We find that the operator algebra and Hilbert space cannot be defined for the entire space, but only for observable causal patches. This makes the system into an explicit realization of the horizon complementarity principle. In the absence of a global quantum theory, we propose a recipe for translating operators and states between observers. This translation involves information loss, in accordance with the fact that two observers see different patches of the spacet…
In this paper we assume the de Sitter Space version of Black Hole Complementarity which states that a single causal patch of de Sitter space is described as an isolated finite temperature cavity bounded by a horizon which allows no loss of information. We discuss the how the symmetries of de Sitter space should be implemented. Then we prove a no go theorem for implementing the symmetries if the entropy is finite. Thus we must either give up the finiteness of the de Sitter entropy or the exact symmetry of the classical space. Each has interesting implications for the very long time behavior. We…
We perform a minisuperspace analysis of an information-theoretic nonlinear Wheeler-deWitt (WDW) equation for de Sitter universes. The nonlinear WDW equation, which is in the form of a difference-differential equation, is transformed into a pure difference equation for the probability density by using the current conservation constraint. In the present study we observe some new features not seen in our previous approximate investigation, such as a nonzero minimum and maximum allowable size to the quantum universe: An examination of the effective classical dynamics supports the interpretation of…
We study the dynamical behavior of the dilaton in the background of three-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter space which is inspired from the low-energy string effective action. The Kerr-de Sitter space describes the gravitational background of a point particle whose mass and spin are given by $1-M$ and $J$ and its curvature radius is given by $\ell$. In order to study the propagation of metric, dilaton, and Kalb-Ramond two-form, we perform the perturbation analysis in the southern diamond of Kerr-de Sitter space including a conical singularity. It reveals a mixing between the dilaton and other unphys…
Built on our observation that entangling surfaces of the boundary field theory are great co-dimension one spheres in the context of DS/dS correspondence, we study some information theoretic quantities of the field theory dual intensively using holographic proposals. We will focus on entanglement entropy (EE), entanglement of purification (EoP) and complexity. Several fundamental observations and analysis are provided. For EE, we focus on its scaling behavior, which indicates the nature of the relevant degrees of freedom. Moreover, we find that EE provides us with important information of the e…
We show that the Planck 2015 and BICEP2/KECK measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies provide together an information gain of 0.82 +- 0.13 bits on the reheating history over all slow-roll single-field models of inflation. This corresponds to a 40% improvement compared to the Planck 2013 constraints on the reheating. Our method relies on an exhaustive CMB data analysis performed over nearly 200 models of inflation to derive the Kullback-Leibler entropy between the prior and the fully marginalized posterior of the reheating parameter. This number is a weighted average b…
We study the wave equation for a minimally coupled massive scalar in three-dimensional de Sitter space. We compute the absorption cross section to investigate its cosmological horizon in the southern diamond. Although the absorption cross section is not defined exactly, we can be determined it from the fact that the low-energy $s(j=0)$-wave absorption cross section for a massless scalar is given by the area of the cosmological horizon. On the other hand, the low-temperature limit of $j\not=0$-mode absorption cross section is useful for extracting information surrounding the cosmological horizo…
We study semi-classical communication in positivity-violating k-essence scalar field theories, with superluminal modes propagating on a rolling background. The self-interactions due to the non-linear nature of these theories pose a constraint on the rate of superluminal information transfer. We derive a novel bit rate bound on superluminal communication within a conceptual model, to which a general class of k-essence theories naturally reduces. Our result implies the possibility that, even if these positivity-violating k-essence theories may not possess a maximal information propagation speed,…
We use quantum extremal island method to study the information paradox on certain cosmological setups known as three dimensional Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes. To do so, we couple an auxiliary flat bath system to this spacetime in timelike singularity and measure entropy of hawking radiation in its asymptotic regions where the gravity is weak. We show that adding island regions to the entanglement wedge of radiation causes its entropy to obey Page curve. The boundary of island i.e. quantum extremal surface is located outside the cosmological horizon in the region connected directly to the bath. Ta…
We study the Hawking radiation of (4+n)-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole imbedded in the space-time with positive cosmological constant. The greybody and energy emission rates of scalars, fermions, bosons, and gravitons are calculated in the full range of energy. The valuable information on the dimensions and curvature of space-time is revealed. Furthermore, we investigate the entropy radiated and lost by black hole. We find their ratio near unit in favor of the Bekenstein's conjecture.
The de Sitter (dS) entropy bound gives the maximal number of e-folds that non-eternal inflation can last before violating the thermodynamical interpretation of dS space. This semiclassical argument is the analogue, for dS space, of the Black-Hole information paradox. We use techniques developed to address the latter, namely the island formula, to calculate semiclassically the fine-grained entropy as seen by a Minkowskian observer after inflation and find that this follows a Page-like curve, never exceeding the thermodynamic dS entropy. This calculation, performed for a CFT in 2D gravity, sugge…
The separability problem is one of the basic and emergent problems in the present and future quantum information processing. The latter focuses on information and computing based on quantum mechanics and uses quantum bits as its basic information units. In this paper, we present an overview of the progress in the separability problem in bipartite systems, more specifically in two quantum bits systems from the criterion based on the inequalities of Bell in $1964$ to the recent criteria of separability in 2018.
We study a close relationship between the topological anti-de Sitter (TAdS)-black holes and topological de Sitter (TdS) spaces including the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black hole in five-dimensions. We show that all thermal properties of the TdS spaces can be found from those of the TAdS black holes by replacing $k$ by $-k$. Also we find that all thermal information for the cosmological horizon of the SdS black hole is obtained from either the hyperbolic-AdS black hole or the Schwarzschild-TdS space by substituting $m$ with $-m$. For this purpose we calculate thermal quantities of bulk, (Eu…
Maldacena has shown that the wavefunction of the universe in de Sitter space can be viewed as the partition function of a conformal field theory. In this paper, we investigate this approach to the dS/CFT correspondence in further detail. We emphasize that massive bulk fields are dual to two primary operators on the boundary, which encode information about the two independent behaviors of bulk expectation values at late times. An operator statement of the duality is given, and it is shown that the resulting boundary correlators can be interpreted as transition amplitudes from the Bunch-Davies v…
Black hole no-hair theorems are proven using inequalities that govern the radial dependence of spherically symmetric configurations of matter fields. In this paper, we analyze the analogous inequalities for geometries dual to renormalization group flows via the AdS/CFT correspondence. These inequalities give much useful information about the qualitative properties of such flows. For Poincare invariant flows, we show that generic flows of relevant or irrelevant operators lead to singular geometries. For the case of irrelevant operators, this leads to an apparent conflict with Polchinski's decou…
