In this paper, we have analyzed the information paradox and its resolution using island proposal in Schwarzschild de-Sitter black hole spacetime. First, we study the information paradox for the black hole patch by treating de-Sitter patch on both sides as a frozen background (by inserting thermal opaque membrane) and then we carry out similar study for de-Sitter patch also. In both cases, when there is no island surface then the entanglement entropy has as usual the linear time dependence whereas in the presence of an island surface entanglement entropy become constant (equal to twice of thermal entropy of black hole/de-Sitter patch). Therefore, we obtain the Page curves for the black hole and de-Sitter patch consistent with the unitary evolution of black holes. In our case, we have found that black hole island is located inside the black hole event horizon in contrast to universal result for eternal black holes and also cosmological island is located inside the cosmological event horizon. Further, we have studied the "effect of temperature" on the Page curves and found that Page curves appear at later times for low temperature black holes/de-Sitter patch and it exhibit opposite behavior for high temperature. This implies that "dominance of islands" and "information recovery" takes more time for low temperature black holes/de-Sitter patch in contrast to high temperature black holes/de-Sitter patch. We also make comments on the challenges to study the information paradox in SdS spacetime without the thermal opaque membrane.
A quantum extremal island suggests that a region of spacetime is encoded in the quantum state of another system, like the encoding of the black hole interior in Hawking radiation. We study conditions for islands to appear in general spacetimes, with or without black holes. They must violate Bekenstein's area bound in a precise sense, and the boundary of an island must satisfy several other information-theoretic inequalities. These conditions combine to impose very strong restrictions, which we apply to cosmological models. We find several examples of islands in crunching universes. In particul…
Recently it was proposed that the entanglement entropy of the Hawking radiation contains the information of a region including the interior of the event horizon, which is called "island." In studies of the entanglement entropy of the Hawking radiation, the total system in the black hole geometry is separated into the Hawking radiation and black hole. In this paper, we study the entanglement entropy of the black hole in the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild spacetime. Consistency with the island rule for the Hawking radiation implies that the information of the black hole is located in a differ…
Great breakthrough in solving black hole information paradox took place when semiclassical island rule for entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation was proposed in recent years. Up to now, most papers which discussed island rule of asymptotic flat black hole with $D \ge 4$ focus on eternal black hole. In this paper, we take one more step further by discussing island of "in" vacuum state which describes one-sided asymptotically flat black hole formed by gravitational collapse in $D \ge 4$. We find that island $I$ emerges at late time and saves entropy bound. And boundary of island $\partial I$…
We use quantum extremal island method to study the information paradox on certain cosmological setups known as three dimensional Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes. To do so, we couple an auxiliary flat bath system to this spacetime in timelike singularity and measure entropy of hawking radiation in its asymptotic regions where the gravity is weak. We show that adding island regions to the entanglement wedge of radiation causes its entropy to obey Page curve. The boundary of island i.e. quantum extremal surface is located outside the cosmological horizon in the region connected directly to the bath. Ta…
Flat-space cosmologies (FSC) are solutions to three dimensional theories of gravity without cosmological constant that have cosmological horizons. A detector located near the time-like singularity of the spacetime can absorb Hawking modes that are created near the horizon. Continuation of this process will eventually cause the entropy of the radiation to be larger than the entropy of the FSC, which leads to the information paradox. In this paper, we resolve this paradox for the FSC using the island proposal. To do this, we couple an auxiliary flat bath system to this spacetime in timelike sing…
In recent work, it was argued that quantum computations with inputs and outputs distributed in spacetime, or quantum tasks, impose constraints on entanglement in holographic theories. The resulting constraint was named the connected wedge theorem and can verified by a direct bulk proof using focusing arguments in general relativity. In this article we extend this work to the context of AdS/BCFT, where an end-of-the-world brane is present in the bulk. By considering quantum tasks which exploit information localized to the brane, we find a new connected wedge theorem. We apply this theorem to br…
We consider spacetime initiated by a finite-sized initial boundary as a generalization of the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary state. We study entanglement entropy of matter state prepared by such spacetime. We find that the entanglement entropy for large subregion is given either by the initial state entanglement or the entanglement island, preventing the entropy to grow arbitrarily large. Consequently, the entanglement entropy is always bounded from above by the boundary area of the island, leading to an entropy bound in terms of the island. The island $I$ is located in the analytically continued …
Observers in de Sitter space can only access the space up to their cosmological horizon. Assuming thermal equilibrium, we use the quantum Ryu-Takayanagi or island formula to compute the entanglement entropy between the states inside the cosmological horizon and states outside, as a function of time. We obtain a Page curve that is bound at a value corresponding to the Gibbons-Hawking entropy. At this transition an 'island' forms, which is in a significantly different location as compared to when considering black hole horizons and even moves back in time. These differences turn out to be essent…
We consider black holes in 2d de Sitter JT gravity coupled to a CFT, and entangled with matter in a disjoint non-gravitating universe. Tracing out the entangling matter leaves the CFT in a density matrix whose stress tensor backreacts on the de Sitter geometry, lengthening the wormhole behind the black hole horizon. Naively, the entropy of the entangling matter increases without bound as the strength of the entanglement increases, but the monogamy property predicts that this growth must level off. We compute the entropy via the replica trick, including wormholes between the replica copies of t…
We study the Page curve for asymptotically flat eternal Schwarzschild black holes in four and higher spacetime dimensions. Before the Page time, the entanglement entropy grows linearly in time. After the Page time, the entanglement entropy of a given region outside the black hole is largely modified by the emergence of an island, which extends to the outer vicinity of the event horizon. As a result, it remains a constant value which reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, consistent with the finiteness of the von Neumann entropy for an eternal black hole.
We study the redundancies in the global spacetime description of the eternally inflating multiverse using the quantum extremal surface prescription. We argue that a sufficiently large spatial region in a bubble universe has an entanglement island surrounding it. Consequently, the semiclassical physics of the multiverse, which is all we need to make cosmological predictions, can be fully described by the fundamental degrees of freedom associated with certain finite spatial regions. The island arises due to mandatory collisions with collapsing bubbles, whose big crunch singularities indicate red…
We systematically calculate the quantum extremal surface (QES) associated with Hawking radiation for general $D$-dimensional ($D\geq2$) asymptotically flat (or AdS) eternal black holes using the island formula. We collect the Hawking radiation particles by a non-gravitational bath and find that a QES exists in the near-horizon region outside the black hole when $c\cdot G_{(D)}$ is smaller enough where $c$ is the central charge of the conformal matter and $G_{(D)}$ the $D$-dimensional Newton constant. The locations of the QES in these backgrounds are obtained and the late-time radiation entropy…
Whereas a static observer in de Sitter (dS) space detects thermal radiation emitted by the horizon, the dS isometries impose that the radiation is in equilibrium with the background. This implies that for the static observer to find the information paradox, the background must be deformed to quasi-dS space in which the dS isometries are spontaneously broken. We study the condition that the information paradox arises in quasi-dS space with the monotonically increasing horizon size which is used to describe the inflationary cosmology. For this purpose, the dimensional reduction of three-dimensio…
There exist several well-established procedures for computing thermodynamics for a single horizon spacetime. However, for a spacetime with multi-horizon, the thermodynamics is not very clear. It is not fully understood whether there exists a global temperature for the multi-horizon spacetime or not. Here we show that a global temperature can exist for Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime, Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetime, and rotating BTZ black hole. This temperature does not coincide with the conventional Hawking temperature related to the outer horizon. We also show that the total entropy…
Well-known results demonstrate the uniqueness of extremal isolated horizons (equivalently near-horizon spacetimes) in (3+1)-dimensions. This paper briefly reviews some of these results and then explicitly constructs families of non-asymptotically flat, non-spherically symmetric spacetimes that nevertheless contain spherically symmetric extremal horizons that are isomorphic to those found in Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes.
We apply the recently proposed quantum extremal surface construction to calculate the Page curve of the eternal Reissner-Nordström black holes in four dimensions ignoring the backreaction and the greybody factor. Without the island, the entropy of Hawking radiation grows linearly with time, which results in the information paradox for the eternal black holes. By extremizing the generalized entropy that allows the contributions from the island, we find that the island extends to the outside the horizon of the Reissner-Nordström black hole. When taking the effect of the islands into account, it …
We show in this note that the Padmanabhan expression $E = a/2$ for the energy of the Schwarzschild and de Sitter spacetimes (a - the horizon radius) is also valid for the Rindler horizon, using an analogy with the electrostatic case.
Euclidean continuation of several Lorentzian spacetimes with horizons requires treating the Euclidean time coordinate to be periodic with some period $β$. Such spacetimes (Schwarzschild, deSitter,Rindler .....) allow a temperature $T=β^{-1}$ to be associated with the horizon. I construct a canonical ensemble of a subclass of such spacetimes with a fixed value for $β$ and evaluate the partition function $Z(β)$. For spherically symmetric spacetimes with a horizon at r=a, the partition function has the generic form $Z\propto \exp[S-βE]$, where $S= (1/4) 4πa^2$ and $|E|=(a/2)$. Both S and E are de…
We propose an alternate cosmological model in which our observable universe is an island in a cosmological constant sea. Initially the universe is filled with cosmological constant of the currently observed value but is otherwise empty. In this eternal or semi-eternal de Sitter spacetime, we show that local quantum fluctuations (upheavals) can violate the null energy condition and create islands of matter. The perturbation spectra of quantum fields other than that responsible for the upheaval, are shown to be scale invariant. With further cosmic evolution the island disappears and the local un…
We construct explicitly deformations of Einstein's theory of gravity that are consistent and phenomenologically viable since they respect, in particular, cosmological backgrounds. We show that these deformations have unique symmetries in accordance with unitarity requirements, and give rise to a curvature induced self-stabilizing mechanism. As a consequence, any nonlinear completed deformation must incorporate self-stabilization on generic spacetimes already at lowest order in perturbation theory. Furthermore, our findings include the possibility of consistent and phenomenologically viable def…
We study the near-horizon spacetime for isolated and dynamical trapping horizons (equivalently marginally outer trapped tubes). The metric is expanded relative to an ingoing Gaussian null coordinate and the terms of that expansion are explicitly calculated to second order. For the spacelike case, knowledge of the intrinsic and extrinsic geometry of the (dynamical) horizon is sufficient to determine the near-horizon spacetime, while for the null case (an isolated horizon) more information is needed. In both cases spacetime is allowed to be of arbitrary dimension and the formalism accomodates bo…
A direct very simple proof that there can be no closed trapped surfaces (ergo no black hole regions) in spacetimes with all curvature scalar invariants vanishing is given. Explicit examples of the recently introduced ``dynamical horizons'' which nevertheless do not enclose any trapped region are presented too.
In this work we systematically study the island formula in the general asymptotically flat eternal black holes in generalized dilaton gravity theories or in higher dimensional spherical black holes. Under some reasonable and mild assumptions we prove that the island always appears barely outside of the horizon in the late time of Hawking radiation so that the information paradox is resolved. In particular, we find proper island in Liouville black hole which solves the puzzle of arXiv:2105.03271.
We study a class of limits of the higher-dimensional Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes where particular roots of metric functions degenerate. Namely, we obtain the Taub-NUT-(A)dS and the extreme near-horizon geometries as two examples of our limiting procedure. The symmetries of the resulting spacetimes are enhanced which is manifested by the presence of supplementary Killing vectors and decomposition of Killing tensors into Killing vectors.
It is argued that free QFT can be defined on the event horizon of a Schwarzschild-like spacetime and that this theory is unitarily and algebraically equivalent to QFT in the bulk (near the horizon). Under that unitary equivalence the bulk hidden SL(2,R) symmetry found in a previous work becomes manifest on the event horizon, it being induced by a group of horizon diffeomorphisms. The class of generators of that group can be enlarged to include a full Virasoro algebra of fields which are defined on the event horizon. These generators have a quantum representation in QFT on the event horizon and…
In this work we analyse asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric spacetimes in which an event horizon is present without any trapped surfaces. We identify two types of such spacetimes, each related to the asymptotic behaviour (in time) of one of the two degrees of freedom of the metric. We study the causal structure of both types, showing that one almost always has a Cauchy horizon beyond which it is extendable, while the other is inextendable but has two separate future null infinity regions on either side of the horizon. We also study what energy conditions can be satisfied by the matter a…
The newly proposed island formula for entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation is applied to spherically symmetric 4-dimensional eternal Kaluza-Klein (KK) black hole. The "charge" $Q$ of KK black holes quantifies its deviation from Schwarzschild black holes. The impact of $Q$ on the island is studied at late times. The late-time island, whose boundary is located outside but within a Planckian distance of the horizon, is slightly extended by $Q$. While the no-island entropy grows linearly, the late-time entanglement entropy is given by island configuration with twice the Bekenstein-Hawking ent…
The extendibility of spacetime and the existence of weak solutions to the Einstein field equations beyond Cauchy horizons, is a crucial ingredient to examine the limits of General Relativity. Strong Cosmic Censorship serves as a firewall for gravitation by demanding inextendibility of spacetime beyond the Cauchy horizon. For asymptotically flat spacetimes, the predominance of the blueshift instability and the subsequent formation of a mass-inflation singularity at the Cauchy horizon have, so far, substantiated the conjecture. Accelerating black holes, described by the $C-$metric, are exact sol…
We explore the spacetime structure near non-extremal horizons in any spacetime dimension greater than two and discover a wealth of novel results: 1. Different boundary conditions are specified by a functional of the dynamical variables, describing inequivalent interactions at the horizon with a thermal bath. 2. The near horizon algebra of a set of boundary conditions, labeled by a parameter $s$, is given by the semi-direct sum of diffeomorphisms at the horizon with "spin-$s$ supertranslations". For $s=1$ we obtain the first explicit near horizon realization of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra. …
We discuss various physical aspects of nonextremal, extremal and supersymmetric black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (ADS) spacetimes. Specifically, we discuss how the isolated horizon (IH) framework leads to an ambiguity-free description of rotating black holes in these spacetimes. We then apply this framework to investigate the properties of supersymmetric isolated horizons (SIHs) in four-dimensional N = 2 gauged supergravity. Among other results we find that they are necessarily extremal, that rotating SIHs must have non-trivial electromagnetic fields, and that non-rotating SIHs nec…
It has been argued that there are no islands in FLRW cosmologies with $Λ>0$ and $k=0$ arXiv:2008.01022. We argue that there is a timelike separated island at the initial singularity, and it will resolve the cosmological information paradox. The information about the particles that went beyond the horizon is not lost for our observer. By measuring Hawking radiation, we can get that information from the past when those particles were near the initial singularity. Similar to how islands inside black holes violate locality, we observe a violation of causality or noncausality but only at the initia…
Horava gravity theory possesses global Lifshitz space as a solution and has been conjectured to provide a natural framework for Lifshitz holography. We derive the conditions on the two derivative Horava gravity Lagrangian that are necessary for static, asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes with flat transverse dimensions to contain a universal horizon, which plays a similar thermodynamic role as the Killing horizon in general relativity. Specializing to z=2 in 1+2 dimensions, we then numerically construct such regular solutions over the whole spacetime. We calculate the mass for these solutions a…
It may be a common understanding at present that, once event horizons are in thermal equilibrium, the entropy-area law holds inevitably. However, no rigorous verification is given to such a very strong universality of the law in multi-horizon spacetimes. In this article, based on thermodynamically consistent and rigorous discussion, we investigate thermodynamics of Schwarzschild-deSitter spacetime in which the temperatures of two horizons are different. We recognize that three independent state variables exist in thermodynamics of the horizons. One of the three variables represents the effect …
The geometry of a spacetime containing a wormhole generated by a spherically symmetric electric field is investigated in detail. These solutions arise in high-energy extensions of General Relativity formulated within the Palatini approach and coupled to Maxwell electrodynamics. Even though curvature divergences generically arise at the wormhole throat, we find that these spacetimes are geodesically complete. This provides an explicit example where curvature divergences do not imply spacetime singularities.
We study Killing horizons and their neighbourhoods in the Kerr-NUT-(anti-)de Sitter and the accelerated Kerr-NUT-(anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. The geometries of the horizons have an irremovable singularity at one of the poles, unless the parameters characterising the spacetimes satisfy the constraint we derive and solve in the current paper. In the Kerr-NUT-de Sitter case, the constraint relates the cosmological constant of spacetime and the horizon area, leaving 3 parameters free. In the accelerated case the acceleration becomes a 4th parameter that allows the cosmological constant to take arb…
We discuss the structure of horizons in spacetimes with two metrics, with applications to the Vainshtein mechanism and other examples. We show, without using the field equations, that if the two metrics are static, spherically symmetric, nonsingular, and diagonal in a common coordinate system, then a Killing horizon for one must also be a Killing horizon for the other. We then generalize this result to the axisymmetric case. We also show that the surface gravities must agree if the bifurcation surface in one spacetime lies smoothly in the interior of the spacetime of the other metric. These re…
