The project of the international Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), co-located to the GSI facility in Darmstadt, has been officially started on November 7, 2007. The current plans of the facility and the planned research program will be described. An investment of about 1 billion euro will permit new physics programs in the areas of low and medium energy antiproton research, heavy ion physics complementary to LHC, as well as in nuclear structure and astrophysics. The facility will comprise about a dozen accelerators and storage rings, which will enable simultaneous operations of up to four different beams.
We evaluate the cross section for anti-p p -> l+ l- pi0 in the forward direction and for large lepton pair invariant mass. In this kinematical region, the leading-twist amplitude factorises into a short-distance matrix element, long-distance dominated antiproton Distribution Amplitudes and proton to pion Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDA). Using a modelling inspired from the chiral limit for these TDAs, we obtain a first estimate of this cross section, thus demonstrating that this process can be measured at GSI-FAIR.
We evaluate differential distributions for exclusive scalar $f_0(1500)$ meson (glueball candidate) production for $p \bar p \to N_1 N_2 f_0$ (FAIR@GSI) and $p p \to p p f_0$ (J-PARC@Tokai). Both QCD diffractive, pion-pion meson exchange current (MEC) components as well as double-diffractive mechanism with intermediate pionic loop are calculated for the first time in the literature. The pion-pion component, which can be reliably calculated, dominates close to the threshold while the diffractive component may take over only for larger energies. At the moment only upper limit for the QCD-diffract…
This note collects formulas relative to the energy dependence of the cross sections for open charm and $J/ψ$ production for $NN$-collisions at threshold. It is a basis for the best input to MonteCarlo calculations, for associative charm particle production in nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-nucleus, ion-ion and proton-antiproton collisions.
The medium energy antiproton beam facility which is under discussion at GSI offers new opportunities to study the QCD of heavy flavours, nuclear structure and exotic mesons. We discuss these topics and briefly highlight other problems in charm production and proton structure.
The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will be the accelerator-based flagship research facility in many basic sciences and their applications in Europe for the coming decades. FAIR will open up unprecedented research opportunities in hadron and nuclear physics, in atomic physics and nuclear astrophysics as well as in applied sciences like materials research, plasma physics and radiation biophysics with applications towards novel medical treatments and space science. FAIR is currently under construction as an international facility at the campus of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum for Heav…
Evolution of the width of the rapidity distribution on beam rapidity has been studied for a number of produced particles with UrQMD-3.3p1 generated events at various FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) energies. The results for the width of the rapidity distribution with beam rapidity, obtained with UrQMD generated events, are compared with the existing experimental data (E802, E877, E896, E917, NA49). For both UrQMD and experimental data, the width of the rapidity distribution is found to bear scaling behavior with beam rapidity for all the hadrons. Such scaling behavior is found …
It has recently been suggested that collisions of transversely polarized protons and antiprotons at the GSI could be used to determine the nucleon's transversity densities from measurements of the double-spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan process. We analyze the role of higher-order perturbative QCD corrections in this kinematic regime, in terms of the available fixed-order contributions as well as of all-order soft-gluon resummations. We find that the combined perturbative corrections to the individual unpolarized and transversely polarized cross sections are large. We trace these large enhance…
We present next-to-leading order predictions for double transverse-spin asymmetries in Drell--Yan dilepton production initiated by proton--antiproton scattering. The kinematic region of the proposed PAX experiment at GSI: $30\lesssim{s}\lesssim200\GeV^2$ and $2\lesssim{M}\lesssim7\GeV$ is examined. The Drell--Yan asymmetries turn out to be large, in the range 20--40%. Measuring these asymmetries would provide the cleanest determination of the quark transversity distributions.
We study the deviations from the usual exponential decay law for quantum mechanical systems. We show that simple and physically motivated deviations from the Breit-Wigner energy distribution of the unstable state are sufficient to generate peculiar deviations from the exponential decay law. Denoting with $p(t)$ the survival probability, its derivative $h(t)$ shows typically an oscillating behavior on top of the usual exponential function. We argue that this can be a viable explanation of the observed experimental results at GSI Darmstadt, where the function $h(t)$ has been experimentally measu…
We present a new event generator based on the three-fluid hydrodynamics approach for the early stage of the collision, followed by a particlization at the hydrodynamic decoupling surface to join to a microscopic transport model, UrQMD, to account for hadronic final state interactions. We present first results for nuclear collisions of the FAIR/NICA energy scan program (Au+Au collisions, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=4-11$ GeV). We address the directed flow of protons and pions as well as the proton rapidity distribution for two model EoS, one with a first order phase transition the other with a crossover typ…
Centrality and system geometry dependence of azimuthal anisotropy of charged hadrons measured in terms of the elliptic flow parameter are investigated using Au+Au event samples at incident beam energy $20$A GeV and $40$A GeV generated by Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics and A Multiphase Transport models. The Monte Carlo Glauber model is employed to estimate the eccentricity of the overlapping zone at an early stage of the collisions. Anisotropies present both in the particle multiplicity distribution and in the kinetic radial expansion are examined by using standard statistical and…
We have studied the dynamical fluctuation of net-charge of hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at energies that in near future will be available at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). Data simulated by a microscopic transport model based on ultra-relativistic quantum molecular dynamics are analyzed for the purpose. The centrality and pseudorapidity dependence of the net-charge fluctuation of hadrons are examined. Our simulated results are compared with the results available for nucleus-nucleus collision experiments held at similar energies. The gross features of our simulated…
Fermilab has long had the world's most intense antiproton source, but the opportunities for medium-energy antiproton physics have been limited, and those for low-energy antiproton physics nonexistent. The conclusion of E835 brings this era to an end. While the future of antiproton physics at Fermilab remains highly uncertain, developments are occurring that may lead to a low-energy program within the next several years, with the possibility of an improved medium-energy program thereafter. These issues were considered at the recent $\bar{p}2000$ Workshop at Illinois Institute of Technology. I s…
We present predictions of the unweighted and weighted double spin asymmetries related to the transversal helicity distribution $g_{1T}$ and the longitudinal transversity distribution $h_{1L}^\perp$, two of eight leading-twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) or three-dimensional parton distribution functions (3dPDFs), in the polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process at typical kinematics on the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). We conclude that FAIR is ideal to access the new 3dPDFs towards a detailed picture of the nucleon structure.
The spin filtering by a multiple passage of a stored beam through a polarized internal gas target is a unique possibility of polarizing high luminosity beam of antiprotons to a high degree of polarization. Apart from the polarization by the spin-dependent transmission, a unique geometrical feature of spin filtering in storage rings is a scattering of stored particles within the ring \cite{Meyer}. A rotation of the spin in the scattering process affects the polarization buildup. We report here a fully quantum-mechanical evolution equation for the spin-density matrix of a stored beam which incor…
We present calculations of dilepton and photon spectra for the energy range $E_{\text{lab}}=2-35$ $A$GeV which will be available for the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future Facility for Anti-Proton and Ion Research (FAIR). The same energy regime will also be covered by phase II of the Beam Energy Scan at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC-BES). Coarse-grained dynamics from microscopic transport calculations of the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model is used to determine temperature and chemical potentials, which allows for the use of dilepto…
Fermilab has long had the world's most intense antiproton source. Despite this, opportunities for low-energy antiproton physics at Fermilab have in the past been limited and--with the antiproton source now exclusively dedicated to serving the needs of the Tevatron Collider--are currently nonexistent. While the future of antiproton physics at Fermilab is uncertain, the anticipated shutdown of the Tevatron in about 2009 presents the opportunity for a world-leading low-energy antiproton program. We summarize the current status of the Fermilab antiproton facility and review some current topics in …
The antiproton storage ring HESR to be constructed at GSI will open up a new range of perturbative and nonperturbative tests of QCD in exclusive and inclusive reactions. I discuss 21 tests of QCD using antiproton beams which can illuminate novel features of QCD. The proposed experiments include the formation of exotic hadrons, measurements of timelike generalized parton distributions, the production of charm at threshold, transversity measurements in Drell-Yan reactions, and searches for single-spin asymmetries. The interactions of antiprotons in nuclear targets will allow tests of exotic nucl…
The AEgIS collaboration is underway to directly measure the gravitational free-fall of neutral antimatter atoms. The experiment recently succeded in producing a pulsed cold antihydrogen source for the first time, and has now entered into its second phase, which aims at the formation of a slow antihydrogen beam and subseuqently a first proof-of-concept gravitational measurement. Major upgrades have been made, such as an improved antihydrogen production scheme and a new state-of-the-art antiproton trap. AEgIS was also connected to CERN's new antiproton deceleration facility ELENA and achieved fi…
The $\bar PANDA$ experiment at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt (Germany) is designed for $\bar p p$ annihilation studies and it will investigate fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei. Gluonic excitations and the physics of hadrons with strange and charm quarks will be accessible with unprecedented accuracy, thereby allowing high precision tests of the strong interactions. In particular, the $D_{s0}^*(2317)^+$ and $D_{s1}(2460)^+$ are still of high interest 11 years after their discovery, because …
The recent discovery of binary neutron star mergers has opened a new and exciting venue of research into hot and dense strongly interacting matter. For the first time this elusive state of matter, described by the theory of quantum chromo dynamics, can be studied in two very different environments. On the macroscopic scale in the collisions of neutron stars and on the microscopic scale in collisions of heavy ions at particle collider facilities. We will discuss the conditions that are created in these mergers and the corresponding high energy nuclear collisions. This includes the properties of…
Exciting new scientific opportunities are presented for the PANDA detector at the High Energy Storage Ring in the redefined $\bar{\text{p}} \text{p}(A)$ collider mode, HESR-C, at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Europe. The high luminosity, $L \sim 10^{31}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, and a wide range of intermediate and high energies, $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ up to 30 GeV for $\bar{\text{p}} \text{p}(A)$ collisions will allow to explore a wide range of exciting topics in QCD, including the study of the production of excited open charm and bottom states, nuclear bound states contai…
Estimations of prompt photon production at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) energies using the extrapolation of existing data are presented. About $10^{-4}$ prompt $γ$ with $p_{t}>$2 GeV/c per Au+Au central event at 25 AGeV are expected. With the planed beam intensity $10^{9}/s$, 1% interaction rate and 10% centrality, at CBM (Compressed Baryonic Matter) experiment one can expect prompt $γ$ rate ~100/s. Predictions for direct photons by some generators (PYTHIA, UrQMD, RQMD, HSD, HIJING) are analyzed. One of the main sources of direct photons (due to meson scatterings $πρ\toπγ, π…
The future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is an accelerator-based international center for fundamental and applied research, which presently is under construction in Darmstadt, Germany. An important part of the program is devoted to questions related to astrophysics, including the origin of elements in the universe and the properties of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions, which are relevant for our understanding of the structure of neutron stars and the dynamics of supernova explosions and neutron star mergers. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment …
