A model for a flat isotropic universe with a negative cosmological constant $Λ$ and a massless scalar field as sole matter content is studied within the framework of Loop Quantum Cosmology. By application of the methods introduced for the model with $Λ=0$, the physical Hilbert space and the set of Dirac observables are constructed. As in that case, the scalar field plays here the role of an emergent time. The properties of the system are found to be similar to those of the $k=1$ FRW model: for small energy densities, the quantum dynamics reproduces the classical one, whereas, due to modifications at near-Planckian densities, the big bang and big crunch singularities are replaced by a quantum bounce connecting deterministically the large semiclassical epochs. Thus in Loop Quantum Cosmology the evolution is qualitatively cyclic.
For asymptotically flat spacetimes the Penrose inequality gives an initial data test for the weak cosmic censorship hypothesis. We give a formulation of this inequality for asymptotically anti-deSitter (AAdS) spacetimes, and show that the inequality holds for time asymmetric data in spherical symmetry. Our analysis is motivated by the constant-negative-spatial-curvature form of the AdS black hole metric.
At low energy the near horizon geometry of nonextreme black holes in four dimensions exhibits an effective SL(2,R)_L x SL(2,R)_R symmetry. The parameters of the corresponding induced conformal field theory gives the correct expression for the black hole entropy. The resulting spectrum of the Schwarzchild black hole is compared with another proposal.
We express the Noether charge entropy density of a black brane in anti-deSitter space in terms of local operators in the anti-deSitter space bulk. We find that Wald's expression for the Noether charge entropy needs to be modified away from the horizon by an additional term that vanishes on the horizon. We then determine the field theory dual of the Noether charge entropy for theories that asymptote to Einstein theory. We do so by calculating the value of the entropy density at the anti-deSitter space boundary and applying the standard rules of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We interpret the varia…
We study a solution of the Einstein's equations generated by a self-gravitating, anisotropic, static, non-singular matter fluid. The resulting Schwarzschild like solution is regular and accounts for smearing effects of noncommutative fluctuations of the geometry. We call this solution regular Schwarzschild spacetime. In the presence of an Anti-deSitter cosmological term, the regularized metric offers an extension of the Hawking-Page transition into a van der Waals-like phase diagram. Specifically the regular Schwarzschild-Anti-deSitter geometry undergoes a first order small/large black hole tr…
We construct solutions for thin black rings in Anti-deSitter and deSitter spacetimes using approximate methods. Black rings in AdS exist with arbitrarily large radius and satisfy a bound |J| \leq LM, which they saturate as their radius becomes infinitely large. For angular momentum near the maximum, they have larger area than rotating AdS black holes. Thin black rings also exist in deSitter space, with rotation velocities varying between zero and a maximum, and with a radius that is always strictly below the Hubble radius. Our general analysis allows us to include black Saturns as well, which …
We describe a formalism for studying spherically symmetric collapse of the massless scalar field in any spacetime dimension, and for any value of the cosmological constant $Λ$. The formalism is used for numerical simulations of gravitational collapse in four spacetime dimensions with negative $Λ$. We observe critical behaviour at the onset of black hole formation, and find that the critical exponent is independent of $Λ$.
In this paper we present the construction of the Maxwell equal area law in the Hawking temperature graph for a charged black hole in Anti-deSitter background. We are able to find exact solution for the corresponding isotherm and entropies for "gaseous" (large) black holes and "liquid" (near-extremal) black holes. Isothermal construction removes the unphysical, negative heat capacity, regions. Furthermore, extremal black holes turn out to be dual to "un-shrinkable" molecules of Van der Waals real fluid, which may explain their thermodynamical stability.
In this work, we use the fact that kinematics of light propagation in a non-dispersive medium associated with a bi-metric spacetime is expressed by means of a 1-parameter family of contact transformations. We present a general technique to find such transformations and explore some explicit examples for Minkowski and anti-deSitter spacetimes geometries.
A rigorous (and simple) proof is given that there is a one-to-one correspondence between causal anti-deSitter covariant quantum field theories on anti-deSitter space and causal conformally covariant quantum field theories on its conformal boundary. The correspondence is given by the explicit identification of observables localized in wedge regions in anti-deSitter space and observables localized in double-cone regions in its boundary. It takes vacuum states into vacuum states, and positive-energy representations into positive-energy representations.
We study the problem of a Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter black hole in a noncommutative geometry framework, thought to be an effective description of quantum-gravitational spacetime. As a first step we derive the noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter solution. After studying the horizon structure, we find that the curvature singularity is smeared out by the noncommutative fluctuations. On the thermodynamics side, we show that the black hole temperature, instead of a divergent behavior at small scales, admits a maximum value. This fact implies an extension of the Hawking-Pag…
We prove a sharp inequality for hypersurfaces in the n-dimensional Anti-deSitter-Schwarzschild manifold for general n greater or equal to 3. This inequality generalizes the classical Minkowski inequality for surfaces in the three dimensional Euclidean space, and has a natural interpretation in terms of the Penrose inequality for collapsing null shells of dust. The proof relies on a new monotonicity formula for inverse mean curvature flow, and uses a geometric inequality established by the first author in [3].
Understanding transitions between different vacua of a multiverse allowing eternal inflation is an open problem whose resolution is important to gain insights on the global structure of the spacetime as well as the problem of measure. In the classical theory, transitions from the anti-deSitter to deSitter vacua are forbidden due to the big crunch singularity. In this article, we consider toy landscape potentials: a double well and a triple well potential allowing anti-deSitter and de-Sitter vacua, in the effective dynamics of loop quantum cosmology for the $k=-1$ FRW model. We show that due to…
Gravitational perturbations of anti-deSitter spacetime play important roles in AdS/CFT correspondence and the brane world scenario. In this paper, we develop a gauge-invariant formalism of gravitational perturbations of maximally symmetric spacetimes including anti-deSitter spacetime. Existence of scalar-type master variables is shown and the corresponding master equations are derived.
A unified treatment of all known types of singularities for flat, isotropic and homogeneous spacetimes in the framework of loop quantum cosmology (LQC) is presented. These include bangs, crunches and all future singularities. Using effective spacetime description we perform a model independent general analysis of the properties of curvature, behavior of geodesics and strength of singularities. For illustration purposes a phenomenological model based analysis is also performed. We show that all values of the scale factor at which a strong singularity may occur are excluded from the effective lo…
We argue that flat space amplitudes for the process $ 2 \to n$ gravitons at center of mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ much less than the Planck scale, will coincide approximately with amplitudes calculated from correlators of a boundary CFT for AdS space of radius $R\gg L_P$, only when $n < R/L_P$ . For larger values of $n$ in AdS space, insisting that all the incoming energy enters "the arena" [arXiv:hep-th/9901079], implies the production of black holes, whereas there is no black hole production in the flat space amplitudes. We also argue, from unitarity, that flat space amplitudes for all $n$ are …
A solution to the massless scalar cosmological constant field equations is presented. The solution has imploding scalar and parts of anti-deSitter or deSitter spacetime as limiting cases. Some of the solutions properties are discussed however not much can be said because of the contrasting properties of imploding scalar and deSitter spacetimes.
It is natural to analyse the AdS$_{d+1}$-CQFT$_{d}$ correspondence in the context of the conformal- compactification and covering formalism. In this way one obtains additional inside about Rehren's rigorous algebraic holography in connection with the degree of freedom issue which in turn allows to illustrates the subtle but important differences beween the original string theory-based Maldacena conjecture and Rehren's theorem in the setting of an intrinsic field-coordinatization-free formulation of algebraic QFT. I also discuss another more generic type of holography related to light fronts wh…
We study the constraints on HST models of AdS space-time. The causal diamonds of HST along time-like geodesics of AdS space-time, fit nicely into the FRW patch of AdS space. The coordinate singularity of the FRW patch is identified with the proper time at which the Hilbert space of the causal diamond becomes infinite dimensional. For diamonds much smaller than the AdS radius, RAdS, the time dependent Hamiltonians of HST are the same as those used to describe similar diamonds in Minkowski space. In particular, they are invariant under the fuzzy analog of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of the…
Both the canonical and microcanonical ensembles are utilized to study the thermodynamic and evaporation properties of a closed black cosmic string whose spacetime is asymptotically anti deSitter. There are similarities and differences to the Schwarzschild-anti deSitter and 2+1 BTZ black hole solutions. It is found that there exist regimes of black string/thermal radiation equilibrium as well as stable remnant regimes. The relevance to black hole evaporation is discussed.
We consider a model with two parallel (positive tension) 3-branes separated by a distance $L$ in 5-dimensional spacetime. If the interbrane space is anti-deSitter, or is not precisely anti-deSitter but contains no event horizons, the effective 4-dimensional cosmological constant seen by observers on one of the branes (chosen to be the visible brane) becomes exponentially small as $L$ grows large.
In this paper we study the propagator of a vector fields on a euclidean maximally-symmetric background in arbitrary space-time dimensions. We study two cases of interest: Massive and massless vector fields. In each case we computed the propagator of the vector fields on euclidean deSitter background, isolating the transverse and longitudinal part. In both case of massive and massless vector fields, the short distance limit of the full propagator agrees with the flat space-time propagator. In the case of massive propagator, the transverse part has a well defined massless limit, and in this limi…
We show that strictly stationary spacetimes cannot have non-trivial configurations of form fields/complex scalar fields and then the spacetime should be exactly Minkowski or anti-deSitter spacetimes depending on the presence of negative cosmological constant. That is, self-gravitating complex scalar fields and form fields cannot exist.
The Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914 prohibits corporate mergers that would result in certain highly undesired end states. We study an exact solution of the Einstein equations describing localized, charged Kaluza-Klein black holes in a collapsing deSitter universe and seek to demonstrate that a similar effect holds, preventing a potentially catastrophic black hole merger. As the collapse proceeds, it is natural to expect that the black hole undergoes a topological transition, wrapping around the shrinking compact dimension to merge with itself and form a black string. However, the putative unifor…
We examine the validity and scope of Johnston's models for scalar field retarded Green functions on causal sets in 2 and 4 dimensions. As in the continuum, the massive Green function can be obtained from the massless one, and hence the key task in causal set theory is to first identify the massless Green function. We propose that the 2-d model provides a Green function for the massive scalar field on causal sets approximated by any topologically trivial 2 dimensional spacetime. We explicitly demonstrate that this is indeed the case in a Riemann normal neighbourhood. In 4-d the model can again …
Campbell's theorem enables the embedding of 4D anti-deSitter space in 5D canonical space, so a particle becomes a wave in the extra dimension, running through spacetime. This model of wave-particle duality provides a new approach to particle mass.
We canonically quantize the dynamics of the brane universe embedded into the five-dimensional Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter bulk space-time. We show that in the brane-world settings the formulation of the quantum cosmology, including the problem of initial conditions, is conceptually more simple than in the 3+1-dimensional case. The Wheeler-deWitt equation is a finite-difference equation. It is exactly solvable in the case of a flat universe and we find the ground state of the system. The closed brane universe can be created as a result of decay of the bulk black hole.
Recently, some authors have removed the big bang singularity in teleparallel Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) and have shown that the universe may undergo a number of oscillations. We investigate the origin of this type of teleparallel theory in a system of intersecting branes in M-theory in which the angle between them changes with time. This system is constructed by two intersecting anti-D8-branes, one compacted D4-brane and the other a D3-brane. These branes are built by joining M0-branes which develop in decaying fundamental strings. The compacted D4-brane is located between two intersecting a…
We consider brane Kantowski-Sachs Universe when bulk space is five-dimensional Anti-deSitter space. The corresponding cosmological equations with perfect fluid are written. For several specific choices of relation between energy and pressure it is found the behavior of scale factors at early time. In particulary, for $γ=3/2$ Kantowski-Sachs brane cosmology is modified to become the isotropic one, while for $γ=1$ it remains the anisotropic cosmology in the process of evolution.
The concordance model of cosmology contains several unknown components such as dark matter and dark energy. Many proposals have been made to describe them by choosing an appropriate potential for a scalar field. We study four models in the realm of loop quantum cosmology (LQC): the Chaplygin gas, an inflationary and radiation-like potential, quintessence and an anti-Chaplygin gas. For the latter we show that all trajectories start and end with a type II singularity and, depending on the inital value, may go through a bounce. On the other hand the evolution under the influence of the first thre…
2+1-dimensional Anti-deSitter gravity is quantized in the presence of an external scalar field. We find that the coupling between the scalar field and gravity is equivalently described by a perturbed conformal field theory at the boundary of AdS_3. We derive the explicit form of this coupling, which allows us to perform a microscopic computation of the transition rates between black hole states due to absorption and induced emission of the scalar field. Detailed thermodynamic balance then yields Hawking radiation as spontaneous emission, and we find agreement with the semiclassical result, inc…
Using three different energy-momentum complexes, the Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, and Papapetrou prescriptions, we calculate the energy of an electrically charged black hole exact solution with a self-interacting, minimally-coupled scalar field and the asymptotic region locally an Anti-deSitter spacetime. Writing the metric in Kerr-Schild Cartesian coordinates, we demonstrate that this metric belongs to the Kerr-Schild class of solutions. Applying each of the three energy-momentum prescriptions and comparing the results, we find consistency among these complexes, suggesting their utility as loca…
The big bang singularity could be understood as a breakdown of Einstein's General Relativity at very high energies. Adopting this viewpoint, other theories, that implement Einstein Cosmology at high energies, might solve the problem of the primeval singularity. One of them is Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) with a small cosmological constant that models a universe moving along an ellipse, which prevents singularities like the big bang or the big rip, in the phase space $(H,ρ)$, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter and $ρ$ the energy density of the universe. Using LQC when one considers a model of un…
In this paper, we introduce a complete family of parametrized quasi-probability distributions in phase space and their corresponding Weyl quantization maps with the aim to generalize the recently developed Wigner-Weyl formalism within the Loop Quantum Cosmology program (LQC). In particular, we intend to define those quasi-distributions for states valued on the Bohr compactification of the real line in such a way that they are labeled by a parameter that accounts for the ordering ambiguity corresponding to non-commutative quantum operators. Hence, we notice that the projections of the parametri…
Previous works (by Almiehri, Dong, Harlow, Pastakawski, Preskill, Yoshida and others) have established that quantum error correction plays an important role in understanding how the bulk degrees of freedom of an Anti-deSitter spacetime are encoded in the degrees of freedom of the boundary Conformal Field Theory. In previous work \cite{Vaid2013Elementary} I have argued that the Bilson-Thompson model \cite{Bilson-Thompson2006Quantum,Vaid2010Embedding} of elementary particles allows us to view elementary particles as gates for universal quantum computation. In the present work I show that the Bil…
After motivating why the study of asymptotically flat spaces is important in loop quantum gravity, we review the extension of the standard framework of this theory to the asymptotically flat sector based on the GNS construction. In particular, we provide a general procedure for constructing new Hilbert spaces for loop quantum gravity on non-compact spatial manifolds. States in these Hilbert spaces can be interpreted as describing fluctuations around fiducial fixed backgrounds. When the backgrounds are chosen to approximate classical asymptotically flat 3-geometries this gives a natural framewo…
We study the weak-field limit of the static spherically symmetric solution of the locally conformally invariant theory advocated in the recent past by Mannheim and Kazanas as an alternative to Einstein's General Relativity. In contrast with the previous works, we consider the physically relevant case where the scalar field that breaks conformal symmetry and generates fermion masses is nonzero. In the physical gauge, in which this scalar field is constant in space-time, the solution reproduces the weak-field limit of the Schwarzschild--(anti)DeSitter solution modified by an additional term that…
