Given an integer partition $\la=(\la_1, ..., \la_\ell)$ and an integer k, denote by $\la^{(k)}$ the sequence of length $\ell$ obtained by reordering the values $|\la_i-k|$ in non-increasing order. If $\la$ dominates $μ$ and has the same weight, then $\la^{(k)}$ dominates $μ^{(k)}$.
In 2012 Jan Saxl conjectured that all irreducible representations of the symmetric group occur in the decomposition of the tensor square of the irreducible representation corresponding to the staircase partition. We make progress on this conjecture by proving the occurrence of all those irreducibles which correspond to partitions that are comparable to the staircase partition in the dominance order. Moreover, we use our result to show the occurrence of all irreducibles corresponding to hook partitions. This generalizes results by Pak, Panova, and Vallejo from 2013.
The Gini index is a number that attempts to measure how equitably a resource is distributed throughout a population, and is commonly used in economics as a measurement of inequality of wealth or income. The Gini index is often defined as the area between the Lorenz curve of a distribution and the line of equality, normalized to be between zero and one. In this fashion, we define a Gini index on the set of integer partitions and show that it is closely related to the second elementary symmetric polynomial, and the dominance order on partitions. We conclude with a generating function for the Gin…
A finite or infinite matrix A with rational entries is called partition regular if whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured there is a monochromatic vector x with Ax=0. Many of the classical theorems of Ramsey Theory may naturally be interpreted as assertions that particular matrices are partition regular. In the finite case, Rado proved that a matrix is partition regular if and only it satisfies a computable condition known as the columns property. The first requirement of the columns property is that some set of columns sums to zero. In the infinite case, much less is known. There …
We study a family of identities regarding a divisibility property of the Kostant partition function which first appeared in a paper of Baldoni and Vergne. To prove the identities, Baldoni and Vergne used techniques of residues and called the resulting divisibility property "mysterious." We prove these identities entirely combinatorially and provide a natural explanation of why the divisibility occurs. We also point out several ways to generalize the identities.
A probabilistic characterization of the dominance partial order on the set of partitions is presented. This extends work in "Symmetric polynomials and symmetric mean inequalities". Electron. J. Combin., 20(3): Paper 34, 2013. Let $n$ be a positive integer and let $ν$ be a partition of $n$. Let $F$ be the Ferrers diagram of $ν$. Let $m$ be a positive integer and let $p \in (0,1)$. Fill each cell of $F$ with balls, the number of which is independently drawn from the random variable $X = Bin(m,p)$. Given non-negative integers $j$ and $t$, let $P(ν,j,t)$ be the probability that the total number of…
The counting of the dimension of the space of $U(N) \times U(N) \times U(N)$ polynomial invariants of a complex $3$-index tensor as a function of degree $n$ is known in terms of a sum of squares of Kronecker coefficients. For $n \le N$, the formula can be expressed in terms of a sum of symmetry factors of partitions of $n$ denoted $Z_3(n)$. We derive the large $n$ all-orders asymptotic formula for $ Z_3(n)$ making contact with high order results previously obtained numerically. The derivation relies on the dominance in the sum, of partitions with many parts of length $1$. The dominance of othe…
We prove that the noncrossing partition lattices associated with the complex reflection groups $G(d,d,n)$ for $d,n\geq 2$ admit symmetric decompositions into Boolean subposets. As a result, these lattices have the strong Sperner property and their rank-generating polynomials are symmetric, unimodal, and $γ$-nonnegative. We use computer computations to complete the proof that every noncrossing partition lattice associated with a well-generated complex reflection group is strongly Sperner, thus answering affirmatively a question raised by D. Armstrong.
We present an alternate proof of a result of Féray and Reiner characterizing posets whose $P$-partition rings are complete intersections. This shortened proof relates the complete intersection property to a simple structural property of a graph associated to $P$.
It is known that differences of symmetric functions corresponding to various bases are nonnegative on the nonnegative orthant exactly when the partitions defining them are comparable in dominance order. The only exception is the case of homogeneous symmetric functions where it is only known that dominance of the partitions implies nonnegativity of the corresponding difference of symmetric functions. It was conjectured by Cuttler, Greene, and Skandera in 2011 that the converse also holds, as in the cases of the monomial, elementary, power-sum, and Schur bases. In this paper we provide a counter…

An integer partition of $n$ is a decreasing sequence of positive integers that add up to $[n]$. Back in $1979$ Macdonald posed a question about the limit value of the probability that two partitions chosen uniformly at random, and independently of each other, are comparable in terms of the dominance order. In $1982$ Wilf conjectured that the uniformly random partition is a size-ordered degree sequence of a simple graph with the limit probability $0$. In $1997$ we showed that in both, seemingly unrelated, cases the limit probabilities are indeed zero, but our method left open the problem of con…
We will say that an Abelian group $Γ$ of order $n$ has the $m$-\emph{zero-sum-partition property} ($m$-\textit{ZSP-property}) if $m$ divides $n$, $m\geq 2$ and there is a partition of $Γ$ into pairwise disjoint subsets $A_1, A_2,\ldots , A_t$, such that $|A_i| = m$ and $\sum_{a\in A_i}a = g_0$ for $1 \leq i \leq t$, where $g_0$ is the identity element of $Γ$. In this paper we study the $m$-ZSP property of $Γ$. We show that $Γ$ has $m$-ZSP if and only if $|Γ|$ is odd or $m\geq 3$ and $Γ$ has more than one involution. We will apply the results to the study of group distance magic graphs as well …
Given a finite set $X$ and an ordering $\succeq$ over its subsets, the $l$-out-of-$d$ maximin-share of $X$ is the maximal (by $\succeq$) subset of $X$ that can be constructed by partitioning $X$ into $d$ parts and picking the worst union of $l$ parts. A pair of integers $(l,d)$ dominates a pair $(l',d')$ if, for any set $X$ and ordering $\succeq$, the $l$-out-of-$d$ maximin-share of $X$ is at least as good (by $\succeq$) as the $l'$-out-of-$d'$ maximin-share of $X$. This note presents a necessary and sufficient condition for deciding whether a given pair of integers dominates another pair, and…
Equivalence relations on the edge set of a graph $G$ that satisfy restrictive conditions on chordless squares play a crucial role in the theory of Cartesian graph products and graph bundles. We show here that such relations in a natural way induce equitable partitions on the vertex set of $G$, which in turn give rise to quotient graphs that can have a rich product structure even if $G$ itself is prime.
We introduce the concept of a bounded below set in a lattice. This can be used to give a generalization of Rota's broken circuit theorem to any finite lattice. We then show how this result can be used to compute and combinatorially explain the Möbius function in various examples including non-crossing set partitions, shuffle posets, and integer partitions in dominance order. Next we present a generalization of Stanley's theorem that the characteristic polynomial of a semimodular supersolvable lattice factors over the integers. We also give some applications of this second main theorem, includi…
We investigate the standard context, denoted by $\mathbb{K}\left(\mathcal{L}_{n}\right)$, of the lattice $\mathcal{L}_{n}$ of partitions of a positive integer $n$ under the dominance order. Motivated by the discrete dynamical model to study integer partitions by Latapy and Duong Phan and by the characterization of the supremum and (infimum) irreducible partitions of $n$ by Brylawski, we show how to construct the join-irreducible elements of $\mathcal{L}_{n+1}$ from $\mathcal{L}_{n}$. We employ this construction to count the number of join-irreducible elements of $\mathcal{L}_{n}$, and show tha…
A matroid $\mathcal{M}$ on a set $E$ of elements has the $α$-partition property, for some $α>0$, if it is possible to (randomly) construct a partition matroid $\mathcal{P}$ on (a subset of) elements of $\mathcal{M}$ such that every independent set of $\mathcal{P}$ is independent in $\mathcal{M}$ and for any weight function $w:E\to\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, the expected value of the optimum of the matroid secretary problem on $\mathcal{P}$ is at least an $α$-fraction of the optimum on $\mathcal{M}$. We show that the complete binary matroid, ${\cal B}_d$ on $\mathbb{F}_2^d$ does not satisfy the $α$-p…
Is it possible to color the naturals with finitely many colors so that no Pythagorean triple is monochromatic? This question is even open for two colors. A natural strategy is to show that some small nonbipartite triple systems cannot be realized as a family of Pythagorean triples. It suffices to consider partial triple systems (PTS's), and it is therefore natural to consider the Fano plane, the smallest nonbipartite PTS. We show that the Pythagorean triples do not contain any Fano plane. In fact, our main result is that a much larger family of "ordered" triple systems (viz. those with a certa…
Absence of (complex) zeros property is at the heart of the interpolation method developed by Barvinok \cite{barvinok2017combinatorics} for designing deterministic approximation algorithms for various graph counting and computing partition functions problems. Earlier methods for solving the same problem include the one based on the correlation decay property. Remarkably, the classes of graphs for which the two methods apply sometimes coincide or nearly coincide. In this paper we show that this is more than just a coincidence. We establish that if the interpolation method is valid for a family o…
The $q,t$-Catalan number $\mathrm{Cat}_n(q,t)$ enumerates integer partitions contained in an $n\times n$ triangle by their dinv and external area statistics. The paper [LLL18 (Lee, Li, Loehr, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 32(2018))] proposed a new approach to understanding the symmetry property $\mathrm{Cat}_n(q,t)=\mathrm{Cat}_n(t,q)$ based on decomposing the set of all integer partitions into infinite chains. Each such global chain $\mathcal{C}_μ$ has an opposite chain $\mathcal{C}_{μ^*}$; these combine to give a new small slice of $\mathrm{Cat}_n(q,t)$ that is symmetric in $q$ and $t$. Here we adv…
A conjecture of Barnette states that every 3-connected cubic bipartite plane graph has a Hamilton cycle, which is equivalent to the statement that every simple even plane triangulation admits a partition of its vertex set into two subsets so that each induces a tree. Let $G$ be a simple even plane triangulation and suppose that ${V_1, V_2, V_3}$ is a 3-coloring of the vertex set of $G$. Let $B_{i}$, $i = 1, 2, 3$, be the set of all vertices in $V_i$ of the degree at least 6. We prove that if induced graphs $G[B_1 \cup B_2]$ and $G[B_1 \cup B_3]$ are acyclic, then the following properties are s…
We characterize the monomial complete intersections in three variables satisfying the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP), as a function of the characteristic of the base field. Our result presents a surprising, and still combinatorially obscure, connection with the enumeration of plane partitions. It turns out that the rational primes p dividing the number, M(a,b,c), of plane partitions contained inside an arbitrary box of given sides a,b,c are precisely those for which a suitable monomial complete intersection (explicitly constructed as a bijective function of a,b,c) fails to have the WLP in chara…
We present a polynomiality property of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients c_{λμ}^ν. The coefficients are shown to be given by polynomials in λ, μand νon the cones of the chamber complex of a vector partition function. We give bounds on the degree of the polynomials depending on the maximum allowed number of parts of the partitions λ, μand ν. We first express the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients as a vector partition function. We then define a hyperplane arrangement from Steinberg's formula, over whose regions the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients are given by polynomials, and relate thi…
In this paper, we use a simple discrete dynamical model to study integer partitions and their lattice. The set of reachable configurations of the model, with the order induced by the transition rule defined on it, is the lattice of all partitions of an integer, equipped with a dominance ordering. We first explain how this lattice can be constructed by an algorithm in linear time with respect to its size by showing that it has a self-similar structure. Then, we define a natural extension of the model to infinity, which we compare with the Young lattice. Using a self-similar tree, we obtain an e…
Say that mu is a ``subpartition'' of an integer partition lambda if the multiset of parts of mu is a submultiset of the parts of lambda, and define an integer partition lambda to be ``wide'' if for every subpartition mu of lambda, mu >= mu' in dominance order (where mu' denotes the conjugate or transpose of mu). Then Brian Taylor and the first author have conjectured that an integer partition lambda is wide if and only if there exists a tableau of shape lambda such that (1) for all i, the entries in the ith row of the tableau are precisely the integers from 1 to lambda_i inclusive, and (2) for…
The material gives a new combinatorial proof of the multiplicative property of the S-transform. In particular, several properties of the coefficients of its inverse are connected to non-crossing linked partitions and planar trees.
We consider partitions of n-dimensional boxes in R^n, n>1, into a finite number of boxes with pairwise disjoint interiors. We study sets X \subseteq (0,\infty) with the Property (W_n): for every n-dimensional box P and every partition of P, if each constituent box has one side with the length belonging to X, then the length of one side of P belongs to X. We prove that the set X \subseteq (0,\infty) has Property (W_n) if and only if X is closed with respect to the operations: x+y and x+y+z-2min(x,y,z).
The hook length formula for $d$-complete posets states that the $P$-partition generating function for them is given by a product in terms of hook lengths. We give a new proof of the hook length formula using $q$-integrals. The proof is done by a case-by-case analysis consisting of two steps. First, we express the $P$-partition generating function for each case as a $q$-integral and then we evaluate the $q$-integrals. Several $q$-integrals are evaluated using partial fraction expansion identities and others are verified by computer.
It is well-known that a nilpotent n by n matrix B is determined up to conjugacy by a partition of n formed by the sizes of the Jordan blocks of B. We call this partition the Jordan type of B. We obtain partial results on the following problem: for any partition P of n describe the type Q(P) of a generic nilpotent matrix commuting with a given nilpotent matrix of type P. A conjectural description for Q(P) was given by P. Oblak and restated by L. Khatami. In this paper we prove "half" of this conjecture by showing that this conjectural type is less than or equal to Q(P) in the dominance order on…
Inspired by a question of Yannakakis on the Vertex Packing polytope of perfect graphs, we study the Clique-Stable Set Separation in a non-hereditary subclass of perfect graphs. A cut (B,W) of G (a bipartition of V(G)) separates a clique K and a stable set S if $K\subseteq B$ and $S\subseteq W$. A Clique-Stable Set Separator is a family of cuts such that for every clique K, and for every stable set S disjoint from K, there exists a cut in the family that separates K and S. Given a class of graphs, the question is to know whether every graph of the class admits a Clique-Stable Set Separator cont…
It was discovered recently by Griffin, Ono, Rolen and Zagier that the Jensen polynomials associated to many sequences have Hermite polynomial limits. We develop this theory in detail, based on the log-polynomial property which is a refinement of log-concavity and log-convexity. Applications to various partition sequences are given. An application to the sequence of factorials leads naturally to evaluating limits of generalized Laguerre polynomials.
We study the validity of a partition property known as weak indivisibility for the integer and the rational Urysohn metric spaces. We also compare weak indivisiblity to another partition property, called age-indivisibility, and provide an example of a countable ultrahomogeneous metric space which may be age-indivisible but not weakly indivisible.
In this paper we obtained an original integer sequence based on the properties of the multinomial coefficient. We investigated a property of the sequence that shows connection with a primality testing. For any prime n the n-th term in the sequence is less by 1 than the number of partitions of n. We hypothesize the existence of an asymptotic algorithm of primality testing.
Let $f: \mathbb{Z}_+\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_+$ be a polynomial with the property that corresponding to every prime $p$ there exists an integer $\ell$ such that $p\nmid f(\ell)$. In this paper, we establish some equidistributed results between the number of partitions of an integer $n$ whose parts are taken from the sequence $\{f(\ell)\}_{\ell=1}^{\infty}$ and the number of parts of those partitions which are in a certain arithmetic progression.
Unrefinable partitions are a subset of partitions into distinct parts which satisfy an additional unrefinability property. More precisely, being an unrefinable partition means that none of the parts can be written as the sum of smaller integers without introducing a repetition. We address the algorithmic aspects of unrefinable partitions, such as testing whether a given partition is unrefinable or not and enumerating all the partitions whose sum is a given integer. We design two algorithms to solve the two mentioned problems and we discuss their complexity.
The algebra of so-called shifted symmetric functions on partitions has the property that for all elements a certain generating series, called the $q$-bracket, is a quasimodular form. More generally, if a graded algebra $A$ of functions on partitions has the property that the $q$-bracket of every element is a quasimodular form of the same weight, we call $A$ a quasimodular algebra. We introduce a new quasimodular algebra consisting of symmetric polynomials in the part sizes and multiplicities.
