We show how the charge input signal applied to the gate electrode in double quantum dot may be converted to a pulse in the Kondo cotunneling current as a spin response of a nano-device in a strong Coulomb blockade regime. The stochastic component of the input signal comes as the infrared cutoff of Kondo transmission.
We derive a kinetic theory capable of dealing both with large spin-orbit coupling and Kondo screening in dilute magnetic alloys. We obtain the collision integral non-perturbatively and uncover a contribution proportional to the momentum derivative of the impurity scattering S-matrix. The latter yields an important correction to the spin diffusion and spin-charge conversion coefficients, and fully captures the so-called side-jump process without resorting to the Born approximation (which fails for resonant scattering), or to otherwise heuristic derivations. We apply our kinetic theory to a quan…
We report here on a direct and non-invasive measurement of the charge and its distribution in a Kondo correlated quantum dot (QD). A non-invasive potential-sensitive detector in proximity with the QD reveals that even though the conductance of the QD is significantly enhanced as it enters the Kondo regime the net charge in the QD remains unaffected. This demonstrates the separation between spin and charge degrees of freedom in the Kondo effect. We find however, under certain experimental conditions, that an abrupt redistribution of the charge in the QD is taking place simultaneously with the o…
We develop a theoretical proposal for the charge Kondo effect in mesoscopic normal-superconductor-normal heterostructures, where the superconducting gap exceeds the electrostatic charging energy. Charge-Kondo correlations in these devices alter the conventional temperature-dependence of Andreev reflection and electron cotunneling. We predict typical Kondo temperatures of $\gtrsim 10 {\rm mK}$, and suggest experimental architectures that combine superconducting charge-qubits with semiconducting nanowires at cryogenic temperatures.
We study nonequilibrium transport through a charge Kondo device realizing the two-channel Kondo critical point in a recent experiment by Iftikhar et al. By computing the current and shot noise at low voltages near the critical point, we obtain a universal Fano factor $e^*/e=1/2$. We identify elementary transport processes as weak scattering of emergent fermions carrying half-integer charge quantum numbers. This forms an experimental fingerprint for fractionalization in a non-Fermi liquid, which, compared to spin-Kondo devices, could be observed at elevated temperatures.
The long-thought charge Kondo effects have recently been experimentally realized in the quantum Hall regime. This experiment, supported by numerics, exemplifies the realization of two-channel Kondo state, a non-Fermi Liquid, and its crossover to the one-channel counterpart, a Fermi liquid. Scaling up such a platform, we find a hierarchy of non-Fermi Liquids and their tunable crossovers based on a renormalization group analysis. Utilizing results from a conformal field theory, we further examine the universal conductances of this strongly correlated system and their finite temperature scaling, …
Magnetic and charge noise have common microscopic origin in solid state devices, as described by a universal electron trap model. In spite of this common origin, magnetic (spin) and charge noise spectral densities display remarkably different behaviours when many-particle correlations are taken into account, leading to the emergence of the Kondo effect. Our numerical renormalization group results indicate that while spin noise is a universal function of the Kondo temperature, charge noise remains well described by single-particle theory even when the trap is deep in the Kondo regime. This diff…
We investigate the Kondo effect in a double-quantum-dot which is capacitively coupled to a charge-Qubit. It is shown that due to this capacitive coupling, the bare inter-dot repulsive interaction in the double-quantum-dot is effectively reduced and eventually changed to an attractive interaction for strong couplings between the double-quantum-dot and the Qubit. By deriving the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of the system, we find that the low energy dynamics of the system corresponding to these two positive or negative effective interaction regimes can be described, respectively, by an isotr…
We consider charge fluctuations in a quantum dot coupled to an interacting one-dimensional electron liquid. We find the behavior of this system to be similar to the multichannel pseudogap Kondo model. By tuning the coupling between the dot and the one-dimensional electron liquid, one can access the quantum critical point and the various fixed points which arise. The differential capacitance is computed and is shown to contain detailed information about the system.
We propose that the finite size of the Kondo screening cloud, xi_K, can be probed by measuring the charge quantization in a one-dimensional system coupled to a small quantum dot. When the chemical potential in the system is varied at zero temperature, one should observe charge steps that are controlled by the Kondo effect when the system size L is comparable to xi_K. We show that, if the standard Kondo model is used, the ratio between the widths of the Coulomb blockade valleys with odd or even number of electrons is a universal scaling function of xi_K/L.
We analyze the full counting statistics of charge transfer through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime, when coupled to an arbitrary number of terminals N. At the unitary Kondo fixed point and for N>2 we recover distinct anticorrelations of currents in concurring transport channels, which are related to the fermionic Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) antibunching. This effect weakens as one moves away from the fixed point. Furthermore, we identify a special class of current correlations that are due entirely to the virtual polarization of the Kondo singlet. These can be used for extracting informati…
Fractional entropy is a signature of nonlocal degrees of freedom, such as Majorana zero modes or more exotic non-Abelian anyons. Although direct experimental measurements remain challenging, Maxwell relations provide an indirect route to the entropy through charge measurements. Here we consider multichannel charge-Kondo systems, which are predicted to host exotic quasiparticles due to a frustration of Kondo screening at low temperatures. In the absence of experimental data for the charge occupation, we derive relations connecting the latter to the conductance, for which experimental results ha…

We investigate theoretically the thermoelectric transport through a circuit implementation of the three-channel "charge" Kondo model quantum simulator [Z. Iftikhar et al., Science 360, 1315 (2018)]. The universal temperature scaling law of the Seebeck coefficient is computed perturbatively approaching the non-Fermi liquid strong coupling fixed point using abelian bosonization technique. The predicted $T^{1/3}\log T$ scaling behavior of the thermoelectric power sheds a light on the properties of $Z_3$ emerging parafermions and gives an access to exploring pre-fractionalized zero modes in the qu…
We develop a method of theoretically investigating the charge, energy and heat transport in the presence of the charge Kondo correlations. The Coulomb blockade oscillations of heat conductance in the single electron transistor exhibiting the charge Kondo effects are investigated. We explore the Wiedemann Franz ratio in both charge-single channel and charge-two channel Kondo regime. The close connections of our findings with the recent experiments on multi-channel charge Kondo effects are discussed.

We propose that the finite size of the Kondo screening cloud, xi_K, can be probed by measuring the charge quantization in a one-dimensional system coupled to a small quantum dot. When the chemical potential, mu in the system is varied at zero temperature, one should observe charge steps whose locations are at values of mu that are controlled by the Kondo effect when the system size L is comparable to xi_K. We show that, if the standard Kondo model is used, the ratio between the widths of the Coulomb blockade valleys with odd or even number of electrons is a universal scaling function of xi_K/L…
We investigate Kondo correlations in a quantum dot with normal and superconducting electrodes, where a spin bias voltage is applied across the device and the local interaction $U$ is either attractive or repulsive. When the spin current is blockaded in the large-gap regime, this nonequilibrium strongly-correlated problem maps into an equilibrium model solvable by the numerical renormalization group method. The Kondo spectra with characteristic splitting due to the nonequilibrium spin accumulation are thus obtained at high precision. It is shown that while the bias-induced decoherence of the sp…
The noncrossing approximation (NCA) is generalized to the multi-channel Kondo-spin Hamiltonian with arbitrary anisotropic exchange couplings and an external magnetic field, and applied -- in the framework of Matveev's mapping -- to the charge fluctuations in a single-electron box at the Coulomb blockade. The temperature dependences of the charge step and the capacitance are calculated for a narrow point contact. At low temperatures and close to the degeneracy point, the capacitance line shape exhibits an approximate scaling with U/\sqrt{T}, where U is the deviation in gate voltage from the deg…
We study magneto-electric properties of single electron traps in metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors. Using a microscopic description of the system based on the single-site Anderson-Holstein model, we derive an effective low energy action for the system. The behavior of the system is characterized by simultaneous polaron tunneling (corresponding to the charging and discharging of the trap) and Kondo screening of the trap spin in the singly occupied state. Hence, the obtained state of the system is a hybrid between the Kondo regime, typically associated with single electron occup…
We investigate transport through an exotic ``charge'' qubit composed of two strongly capacitively coupled quantum dots (QDs), each being independently connected to a side gate which in general exhibits a fluctuating electrostatic field ({\em i.e.}, Nyquist/Johnson noise). Two quantum phases are found: the ``Kondo'' phase where an orbital-Kondo entanglement emerges and a ``local moment'' phase in which the noise destroys the Kondo effect leaving the orbital spin unscreened and resulting in a clear suppression of the conductance. In the Kondo realm, the transfer of charge across the setting is a…

We revisit a model describing Seebeck effect on a weak link between two charge Kondo circuits, which has been proposed in the [Phys. Rev. B 97, 085403 (2018)]. We calculate the thermoelectric coefficients in the perturbation theory assuming smallness of the reflection amplitudes of the quantum point contacts. We focus on the linear response equations for the heat conductance in three different scenarios as: Fermi liquid vs Fermi liquid, Fermi liquid vs non-Fermi liquid, nonFermi liquid vs non-Fermi liquid. The oscillations of the heat conductance as a function of the gate voltage of each quant…
We investigate theoretically quantum transport through the "charge" Kondo circuit consisting of the quantum dot (QD) coupled weakly to an electrode at temperature $T+ΔT$ and connected strongly to another electrode at the reference temperature $T$ by a single-mode quantum point contact (QPC). To account for the effects of Coulomb interaction in the QD-QPC setup operating in the integer quantum Hall regime we describe the edge current in the quantum circuit by Luttinger model characterized by the Luttinger parameter $g$. It is shown that the temperature dependence of both electric conductance $G…
We investigate various aspects of the Kondo singlet in a quantum dot (QD) electrostatically coupled to a mesoscopic detector. The two subsystems are represented by an entangled state between the Kondo singlet and the charge-dependent detector state. We show that the phase-coherence of the Kondo singlet is destroyed in a way that is sensitive to the charge-state information restored both in the magnitude and in the phase of the scattering coefficients of the detector. We also introduce the notion of the `conditional evolution' of the Kondo singlet under projective measurement on the detector. O…
Many-body correlations and macroscopic quantum behaviors are fascinating condensed matter problems. A powerful test-bed for the many-body concepts and methods is the Kondo model which entails the coupling of a quantum impurity to a continuum of states. It is central in highly correlated systems and can be explored with tunable nanostructures. Although Kondo physics is usually associated with the hybridization of itinerant electrons with microscopic magnetic moments, theory predicts that it can arise whenever degenerate quantum states are coupled to a continuum. Here we demonstrate the previous…
Using the transversal vibration resonance of a suspended carbon nanotube as charge detector for its embedded quantum dot, we investigate the case of strong Kondo correlations between a quantum dot and its leads. We demonstrate that even when large Kondo conductance is carried at odd electron number, the charging behaviour remains similar between odd and even quantum dot occupation. While the Kondo conductance is caused by higher order processes, a sequential tunneling only model can describe the time-averaged charge. The gate potentials of maximum current and fastest charge increase display a …
Spin and charge transport through a quantum dot coupled to external nonmagnetic leads is analyzed theoretically in terms of the non-equilibrium Green function formalism based on the equation of motion method. The dot is assumed to be subject to spin and charge bias, and the considerations are focused on the Kondo effect in spin and charge transport. It is shown that the differential spin conductance as a function of spin bias reveals a typical zero-bias Kondo anomaly which becomes split when either magnetic field or charge bias are applied. Significantly different behavior is found for mixed c…
We have studied the interplay of a local phonon mode embedded in a metallic host (Holstein impurity model) using Abelian bosonization. The phonon frequency softens, which takes place in two steps: first, their frequency starts softening, and acquires finite lifetime. Then oscillations disappear from the response, and two distinct, finite dampings characterize them. Similar behaviour shows up in the spin-boson model. Due to phonons, the electrons experience an attractive, dynamic interaction. As a result, the electronic charge response enhances similarly to the spin response in the Kondo model.…
Low-temperature transport through molecules with effectively negative charging energy U exhibits a charge-Kondo effect. We explore this regime analytically by establishing an exact mapping between the negative-U and the positive-U Anderson models, which is suitable for the description of nonequilibrium transport. We employ this mapping to demonstrate the intimate relation between nonequilibrium tranport in the spin-Kondo and charge-Kondo regimes, and derive analytical expressions for the nonlinear current-voltage chracteristics as well as the shot noise in the latter regime. Applying the mappi…
Quantum phase transitions are ubiquitous in many exotic behaviors of strongly-correlated materials. However the microscopic complexity impedes their quantitative understanding. Here, we observe thoroughly and comprehend the rich strongly-correlated physics in two profoundly dissimilar regimes of quantum criticality. With a circuit implementing a quantum simulator for the three-channel Kondo model, we reveal the universal scalings toward different low-temperature fixed points and along the multiple crossovers from quantum criticality. Notably, an unanticipated violation of the maximum conductan…
We study a quantum dot connected to the bulk by single-mode junctions at almost perfect conductance. Although the average charge $e\langle N \rangle$ of the dot is not discrete, its spin remains quantized: $s=1/2$ or $s=0$, depending (periodically) on the gate voltage. This drastic difference from the conventional mixed-valence regime stems from the existence of a broad-band, dense spectrum of discrete levels in the dot. In the doublet state, the Kondo effect develops at low temperatures. We find the Kondo temperature $T_K$ and the conductance at $T\lesssim T_K$.
We calculate the charge transfer probability distribution function $χ(λ)$ for the Kondo dot in the strong coupling limit within the framework of the Nozières--Fermi--liquid theory of the Kondo effect. At zero temperature, the ratio of the moments $C_n$ of the charge distribution to the backscattering current $I_{\rm bs}$ follows a universal law $C_n/2I_{\rm bs}=(-1)^n(1+2^n)/6$. The functional form of $χ(λ)$ is consistent with tunnelling of electrons and, possibly, electron pairs. We then discuss the cross-over behaviour of $χ(λ)$ from weak to strong Coulomb repulsion in the underlying Anderso…

We present the first quantitative experimental evidence for the underscreened Kondo effect, an uncomplete compensation of a quantized magnetic moment by conduction electrons, as originally proposed by Nozieres and Blandin. The device consists of an even charge spin S = 1 molecular quantum dot, obtained by electromigration of C60 molecules into gold nanogaps and operated in a dilution fridge. The persistence of logarithmic singularities in the low temperature conductance is demonstrated by a comparison to the fully screened configuration obtained in odd charge spin S = 1/2 Coulomb diamonds. We …
We show that a strongly correlated quantum dot embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer can be used to filter both charge and spin at zero voltage bias. The magnitude with which the Aharonov-Bohm arm is coupled to the system controls the many-body effects on the quantum dot. When the quantum dot is in the Kondo regime the flow of charge through the system can be tuned by the phase of the Aharonov-Bohm arm, $ϕ_{AB}$. Furthermore when a spin-orbit interaction is present on a Kondo quantum dot we can control the flow of spin by the spin-orbit phase, $ϕ_{SO}$. The existence of the Kondo peak at…
We predict a new type of the negative-$U$ Anderson impurity formed in a triple quantum dot. The two dots of the system behave as a negative-$U$ impurity preferring zero or double electron occupancy rather than single occupancy, and the third dot stabilizes the attractive interaction of $U < 0$ via Coulomb repulsion. Using a bosonization method, we find that the system has the two different phases of massive or vanishing charge fluctuations between the two occupancies at low temperature, which are equivalent with the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases of the anisotropic Kondo model, res…
We analyze the full counting statistics (FCS) of quantum dots in the Kondo regime contacted by normal and superconducting leads or an STM tip. To describe the Kondo resonance we use an effective model for the quantum dot in the Kondo regime in combination with the FCS for tunneling contacts calculated using the Hamiltonian approach. We show that the situation of weak coupling to the superconducting electrode in the case of superconductor gap being larger than the Kondo resonance width can be easily handled and verify the method by comparing our theoretical predictions to experimental data. Thi…
In this lecture note we focus our attention to quantum dot systems where exotic strongly correlated behavior develops due to the presence of orbital or charge degrees of freedom. After giving a concise overview of the theory of transport and Kondo effect through a single electron transistor, we discuss how SU(4) Kondo effect develops in dots having orbitally degenerate states and in double dot systems, and then study the singlet-triplet transition in lateral quantum dots. Charge fluctuations and Matveev's mapping to the two-channel Kondo model in the vicinity of charge degeneracy point are als…
We investigate the charge fluctuations of a single-electron box (metallic grain) coupled to a lead via a smaller quantum dot in the Kondo regime. The most interesting aspect of this problem resides in the interplay between spin Kondo physics stemming from the screening of the spin of the small dot and orbital Kondo physics emerging when charging states of the grain with (charge) Q=0 and Q=e are almost degenerate. Combining Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method with perturbative scaling approaches we push forward our previous work [K. Le Hur and P. Simon, Phys. Rev. B 67, 201308R (200…
We investigate the charge fluctuations of a grain (large dot) coupled to a lead via a small quantum dot in the Kondo regime. We show that the strong entanglement of charge and spin flips in this setup can result in a stable SU(4) Kondo fixed point, which considerably smears out the Coulomb staircase behavior already in the weak tunneling limit. This behavior is robust enough to be experimentally observable.
A Kondo resonance has been observed on purely organic molecules in several combinations of charge transfer complexes on a metal surface. It has been regarded as a fingerprint of the transfer of one electron from the donor to the extended $π$ orbital of the acceptor's LUMO. Here, we investigate the stoichiometric checkerboard structure of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) on a Au(111) surface using scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy at 4.8 K. We find a bistable state of the TCNE molecules with distinct structural and electronic properties. The two states represe…
We describe the mechanism of charge-spin transformation in a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation, where a time dependent gate voltage v(t) is applied to one of its two valleys, whereas the other one is coupled to the source and drain electrodes. The Kondo tunneling regime under strong Coulomb blockade may be realized when the spin spectrum of the DQD is formed by the ground state spin triplet and two singlet excitations. Charge fluctuations induced by v(t) result in transitions within the spin multiplet characterized by the SO(5) dynamical symmetry group. In a weakly non-adiabatic re…
We show how the charge input signal applied to the gate electrode in a double and triple quantum dot may be converted to a pulse in the Kondo cotunneling current being a spin response of a nano-device under a strong Coulomb blockade. The stochastic component of the input signal results in the infrared cutoff of Kondo transmission. The stochastization of the orbital component of the Kondo effect in triple quantum dots results in a noise-induced SU(4) - SU(2) quantum transition.
We study low energy spin and charge transport through a 1D Mott-Hubbard insulator of finite length $L$ attached to Fermi liquid reservoirs characterized by different chemical potentials for electrons of opposite spin polarizations as it happens in quantum spin Hall insulators. We calculate the average currents (charge and spin) and their correlators and demonstrate how a transition induced by the reservoirs to the low energy Fermi liquid regime results in breakdown of the spin-charge separation, which is visible in the presence of the spin dependent voltages and a weak one electron scattering …
Quantum critical behavior in the two-impurity Kondo model requires the distinct separation of two scales, T_K >> T*, where T_K is the Kondo temperature and T* is the scale at which the system renormalizes away from the quantum critical point to a stable Fermi liquid fixed point. We provide a derivation of T* based on the renormalization group to lowest order. This result is confirmed by a numerical renormalization group (NRG) analysis which supplements the analytic derivation with additional quantitative precision. The form of the low-energy Fermi liquid fixed point is derived and subsequently…
We developed a theoretical framework which extends the method of \textit{full counting statistics} (FCS) from conventional single channel Kondo screening schemes to multi-channel Kondo paradigm. The developed idea of FCS has been demonstrated considering an example of two-stage Kondo (2SK) model. We analyzed the charge transferred statistics in the strong-coupling regime of a 2SK model using non-equilibrium Keldysh formulation. A bounded value of Fano factor, $1\leq F\leq 5/3$, confirmed the cross-over regimes of charge transfered statistics in 2SK effect, from Poissonian to super-Poissonian. …
We report on noise measurements in a quantum dot in the presence of Kondo correlations. Close to the unitary limit, with the conductance reaching 1.8e2/h, we observed an average backscattered charge of e*~5e/3, while weakly biasing the quantum dot. This result held to bias voltages up to half the Kondo temperature. Away from the unitary limit, the charge was measured to be e as expected. These results confirm and extend the prediction by E. Sela et al. [1], that suggested that two-electron backscattering processes dominate over single-electron backscattering processes near the unitary limit, w…
In this Letter we investigate the properties of a quantum impurity model in the presence of additional many-body interactions between mobile carriers. The fundamental question which is addressed here is how the interactions in the charge and spin sectors of an itinerant system affect the quantum impurity physics in the vicinity of the intermediate coupling fixed point. To illustrate the general answer to this question we discuss a two-channel charge Kondo circuit model. We show that the electron-electron interactions resulting in the formation of a massive spin mode in an itinerant electron su…
We show that the energy functional of ensemble Density Functional Theory (DFT) [Perdew et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 49, 1691 (1982)] in systems with attractive interactions is a convex function of the fractional particle number N and is given by a series of straight lines joining a subset of ground-state energies. As a consequence the exchange-correlation (XC) potential is not discontinuous for all N. We highlight the importance of this exact result in the ensemble-DFT description of the negative-U Anderson model. In the atomic limit the discontinuity of the XC potential is missing for odd N while…
The conductance through a serial double dot structure for which the inter-dot tunneling is stronger than the tunneling to the leads is studied using the numerical density matrix renormalization group method and analytic arguments. When the dots are occupied by 1 or 3 electrons the usual Kondo peak is obtained. For the case in which 2 electrons occupy the molecule a singlet is formed. Nevertheless, the conductance in that case has a constant non-zero value, and might even be equal to the maximum conductance of $2 e^2/h$ for certain values of the molecule parameters. We show that this is the res…
We study the influence of a magnetic impurity or ultrasmall quantum dot on the charge persistent current of a mesoscopic ring. The system consists of electrons in a one-dimensional ring threaded by spin-dependent Aharonov-Bohm/Casher fluxes, coupled via an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction to a localized electron. By passing to a basis of electron states with definite parities, the problem is mapped onto a Kondo model for the even-parity channel plus free electrons in the odd-parity channel. States of opposite parities decouple for values of the flux corresponding to periodic or antiperio…
We study multiterminal Majorana and conventional superconducting islands in the vicinity of the charge degeneracy point using bosonization and numerical renormalization group. Both models map to the multichannel charge Kondo problem, but for noninteracting normal leads they flow to different non-Fermi liquid fixed points at low temperatures. We compare and contrast both cases by numerically obtaining the full crossover to the low temperature regime and predict distinctive transport signatures. We attribute the differences between both types of islands to a crucial distinction of charge-$2e$ an…
