We demonstrate a novel technique for coupling XUV harmonic radiation out of a femtosecond enhancement cavity. We use a small-period diffraction grating etched directly into the surface of a dielectric mirror. For the fundamental light, this element acts as a high reflector. For harmonic wavelengths, it acts as a diffraction grating, coupling XUV radiation out of the cavity. Using this method, we observed the 3rd through 21st odd harmonics with a dramatic increase in usable power over previous results of high harmonic generation at high repetition rates.
We demonstrate generation and frequency doubling of unit charge vortices in a linear astigmatic resonator. Topological instability of the double charge harmonic vortices leads to well separated vortex cores that are shown to rotate, and become anisotropic, as the resonator is tuned across resonance.
We describe an experiment showing a spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomenon between the intensities of the ordinary and extraordinary components of the fundamental field in intracavity type-II harmonic generation. It is based on a triply resonant dual cavity containing a type II phase matched $χ^{(2)}$ crystal pumped at the fundamental frequency $ω_0$. The pump beam generates in the cavity a second harmonic mode at frequency $2ω_0$ which acts as a pump for frequency degenerate type II parametric down conversion. Under operating conditions which are precisely symmetric with respect to the ordi…
Here we investigate the use of passive intracavity optical filters for controlling the laser output spectrum of a polarization-mode-locked, ultrafast Ytterbium fiber laser. With strategic placement of the filter cutoff frequency, the overall lasing bandwidth can be increased or extended. Overall laser performance, including pulse compression and intensity noise, is investigated for both shortpass and longpass filters with a range of cutoff frequencies, tuned by rotating the filters. We demonstrate the use of an intracavity filter not only shapes the output spectra, it provides a route for over…
VUV radiation around 159 nm is obtained toward direct excitation of a single trapped $^{115}$In$^{+}$ ion. An efficient fluoride-based VUV output-coupler is employed for intracavity high-harmonic generation of a Ti:S oscillator. Using this coupler, where we measured its reflectance to be about 90%, an average power reaching $6.4\,μ$W is coupled out from a modest fundamental power of 650 mW. When a single comb component out of $1.9\times10^{5}$ teeth is resonant to the atomic transition, hundreds of fluorescence photons per second will be detectable under a realistic condition.
We present a new method of external-cavity diode laser grating stabilization which combines the high output power of the Littrow design with the fixed output pointing of the Littman-Metcalf design. Our new approach utilizes a Faraday-effect optical isolator inside the external cavity. Experimental testing and a model which describes the tuning range and optimal tuning parameters of the laser are described. Preliminary testing of this design has resulted in a short-term linewidth of 360 kHz and a side-mode suppression of 37 dB. The laser tunes mode-hop free over 7 GHz and we predict that much l…
Permeable mirrors are typically used for coupling photons out of laser cavities. A similar approach was proposed for output coupling photons from the cavities of x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) oscillators. One of the Bragg-reflecting crystal mirrors is thin, just a few extinction length, and is used as a permeable mirror. However, this method is very often limited to extractions of only a few tenths of the intracavity power. Other cavity-based XFELs, such as the high-gain regenerative amplifier XFEL, require much higher outcoupling efficiency. Here, alternative schemes are proposed and analy…
We present a novel scheme of structured light laser with an astigmatic mode converter (AMC) as intracavity element, first enabling the generation of Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes with fully controlled two-dimensional (2D) indices (m,n) and vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) directly from cavity. The 2D tunability was realized by controlling the off-axis displacements of both pump and intracavity AMC. The output HGm,n beam could be externally converted into OAM beam with 2D tunable radial and azimuthal indices (p,l). With the certain parameter control, vortex beam carrying OAM a…
Soliton formation in on-chip micro-comb generation balances cavity dispersion and nonlinearity and allows coherent, low-noise comb operation. We study the intracavity waveform of an on-chip microcavity soliton in a silicon nitride microresonator configured with a drop port. Whereas combs measured at the through port are accompanied by a very strong pump line which accounts for >99% of the output power, our experiments reveal that inside the microcavity, most of the power is in the soliton. Time-domain measurements performed at the drop port provide information that directly reflects the intrac…
We report on a high-efficiency 461 nm blue light conversion from an external cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation of a 922 nm diode laser with a quasi-phase-matched KTP crystal (PPKTP). By choosing a long crystal (LC=20 mm) and twice looser focusing (w0=43 $μ$m) than the "optimal" one, thermal lensing effects due to the blue power absorption are minimized while still maintaining near-optimal conversion efficiency. A stable blue power of 234 mW with a net conversion efficiency of eta=75% at an input mode-matched power of 310 mW is obtained. The intra-cavity measurements of the conversion …
We present a continuous, narrow-linewidth, tunable laser system that outputs up to 14.0 W at 770 nm. The light is generated by frequency doubling 18.8 W of light from a 1540 nm fiber amplifier that is seeded by a single mode diode laser achieving >74% conversion efficiency. We utilize a Lithium Triborate Crystal in an enhancement ring cavity. The low intensity noise and narrow linewidth of the 770 nm output are suitable for cold atom experiments.
The rapid developments in orbital-angular-momentum-carrying Laguerre-Gaussian (LG0 l) modes in recent years have facilitated progresses in optical communication, micromanipulation and quantum information. However, it is still challenging to efficiently generate bright, pure and selectable LG0 l laser modes in compact devices. Here, we demonstrate a low-threshold solid-state laser that can directly output selected high-purity LG0 l modes with high efficiency and controllability. Spin-orbital angular momentum conversion of light is used to reversibly convert the transverse modes inside cavity an…
Here we report lasing action in limaçon-shaped GaAs microdisks with quantum dots (QDs) embedded. Although the intracavity ray dynamics is predominantly chaotic, high-$Q$ modes are concentrated in the region $χ> χ_c$ as a result of wave localization. Strong optical confinement by total internal reflection leads to very low lasing threshold. Our measurements show that all the lasing modes have output in the same direction, regardless of their wavelengths and intracavity mode structures. This universal emission direction is determined by directed phase space flow of optical rays in the open chaot…
In this paper, we study theoretically the behavior of a pulse as it propagates through an intracavity fast-light medium. The method of using a transfer function to determine a pulse after it passes through a cavity is well known. However, this approach cannot be used to determine the behavior of the pulse inside the cavity. To circumvent this constraint, we use an approach that starts by finding a self-consistent solution for a monochromatic field of infinite spatial and temporal extents, and determine its amplitudes before, inside, and after the cavity. We then construct a Gaussian input puls…
We present an all-solid-state laser source emitting up to 2.1 W of single-frequency light at 671 nm developed for laser cooling of lithium atoms. It is based on a diode-pumped, neodymium-doped orthovanadate (Nd:YVO$_4$) ring laser operating at 1342 nm. Optimization of the thermal management in the gain medium results in a maximum multi-frequency output power of 2.5 W at the fundamental wavelength. We develop a simple theory for the efficient implementation of intracavity second harmonic generation, and its application to our system allows us to obtain nonlinear conversion efficiencies of up to…
Intrinsic to the process of high-order harmonic generation is the creation of plasma and the resulting spatiotemporal distortions of the driving laser pulse. Inside a high finesse cavity where the driver pulse and gas medium are reused, this can lead to optical bistability of the cavity-plasma system, accumulated self-phase modulation of the intracavity pulse, and coupling to higher order cavity modes. We present an experimental and theoretical study of these effects and discuss their implications for power scaling of intracavity high-order harmonic generation and extreme ultraviolet frequency…
We observe high optical quality factor (Q) polygonal and star coherent optical modes in a lithium niobate microdisk. In contrast to the previous polygon modes achieved by deformed microcavities at lower mechanical and optical Q, we adopted weak perturbation from a tapered fiber for the polygon mode formation. The resulting high intracavity optical power of the polygon modes triggers second harmonic generation at high efficiency. With the combined advantage of high mechanical Q cavity optomechanical oscillation was observed for the first time. Finally, we observe frequency microcomb generation …
We propose an hybrid laser system consisting of a semiconductor external cavity laser associated to an intra-cavity diamond etalon doped with nitrogen-vacancy color centers. We consider laser emission tuned to the infrared absorption line that is enhanced under the magnetic field dependent nitrogen-vacancy electron spin resonance and show that this architecture leads to a compact solid-state magnetometer that can be operated at room-temperature. The sensitivity to the magnetic field limited by the photon shot-noise of the output laser beam is estimated to be around $250~\mathrm{fT/\sqrt{Hz}}$.…
A phenomenological approach is developed that allows one to completely describe the effects of unwanted noise, such as the noise associated with absorption and scattering, in high-Q cavities. This noise is modeled by a block of beam splitters and an additional input-output port. The replacement schemes enable us to formulate appropriate quantum Langevin equations and input-output relations. It is demonstrated that unwanted noise renders it possible to combine a cavity input mode and the intracavity mode in a nonmonochromatic output mode. Possible applications to unbalanced and cascaded homodyn…

Microcomb generation with simultaneous $χ^{(2)}$ and $χ^{(3)}$ nonlinearities brings new possibilities for ultra-broadband and potentially self-referenced integrated comb sources. However, the evolution of the intracavity field involving multiple nonlinear processes shows complex dynamics that is still poorly understood. Here we report on strong soliton regulation induced by fundamental-second-harmonic (FD-SH) mode coupling. The formation of solitons from chaos is extensively investigated based on coupled Lugiato-Lefever equations. The soliton generation shows more deterministic behaviors in t…
Experimental investigation of the characteristics of quasi-bound states of a quadrupole deformed microcavity has revealed five distinct mode groups in cavity emission spectra with cavity quality factors different by orders of magnitude and consistently with much different intracavity mode distributions but with almost universal far-field emission patterns. These universal directionality of high Q modes are explained by a subtle manifestation of unstable manifolds of classical chaos in the formation of quasi-bound states.
We demonstrate a compact two-chip terahertz-emitting vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (TECSEL) source, which provides 1-THz output based on intracavity frequency conversion of dual-wavelength emission in a periodically-poled lithium niobate crystal. The type-I frequency conversion scheme at room temperature highly benefits from the power-scaling possibilities in a multichip cavity with intracavity powers in excess of 500 W.
We theoretically study the generation of optical frequency combs and corresponding pulse trains in doubly resonant intracavity second-harmonic generation (SHG). We find that, despite the large temporal walk-off characteristic of realistic cavity systems, the nonlinear dynamics can be accurately and efficiently modelled using a pair of coupled mean-field equations. Through rigorous stability analysis of the system's steady-state continuous wave solutions, we demonstrate that walk-off can give rise to a new, previously unexplored regime of temporal modulation instability (MI). Numerical simulati…
We study the effect of finite size and misalignment on a fundamental optomechanical setup: a Fabry-Pérot cavity with one fixed and one moveable mirror. We describe in detail light confinement under these real world imperfections and compare the behaviour of the intracavity and output fields to the well-known ideal case. In particular, we show that it is possible to trace the motion of the movable mirror itself by measuring intensity changes in the output field even in the presence of fabrication shortcomings and thermal noise. Our result might be relevant to the transition from high precision …
External passive femtosecond enhancement cavities (fsECs) are widely used to increase the efficiency of non-linear conversion processes like high harmonic generation (HHG) at high repetition rates. Their performance is often limited by beam ellipticity, caused by oblique incidence on spherical focusing mirrors. We introduce a novel three-dimensionally folded variant of the typical planar bow-tie resonator geometry that guarantees circular beam profiles, maintains linear polarization, and allows for a significantly tighter focus as well as a larger beam cross-section on the cavity mirrors. The …
We present a model for quasi-phase matching (QPM) in high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Using a one-dimensional description, we analyze the time-dependent, ultrafast wave-vector balance to calculate the on-axis harmonic output versus time, from which we obtain the output pulse energy. Considering, as an example, periodically patterned argon gas, as may be provided with a grid in a cluster jet, we calculate the harmonic output during different time intervals within the drive laser pulse duration. We find that identifying a suitable single spatial period is not straightforward due to the comp…
Measured and calculated results are presented on the emission properties of a new class of emitters operating in the cavity quantum electrodynamics regime. The structures are based on high-finesse GaAs/AlAs micropillar cavities, each with an active medium consisting of a layer of InGaAs quantum dots and distinguishing feature of having substantial fraction of spontaneous emission channeled into one cavity mode (high-beta factor). This paper shows that the usual criterion for lasing with a conventional (low-beta factor) cavity, a sharp nonlinearity in an input-output curve accompanied by notice…
Harmonic and Intermodulation distortions occur when a physical system is excited with a single or several frequencies and when the relationship between the input and output is non-linear. Working with non-linearities in the Frequency domain is not straightforward specially when the relationship between the input and output is not trivial. We outline the complete derivation of the Harmonic and Intermodulation distortions from basic principles to a general physical system. For illustration, the procedure is applied to the Single Mode laser diode where the relationship of input to output is non-t…
We study cascaded harmonic generation of hybrid surface plasmons in integrated planar waveguides composed of a graphene layer and a doped-semiconductor slab. We derive a comprehensive model of cascaded third harmonic generation through phase-matched nonlinear interaction of fundamental, second harmonic and third harmonic plasmonic modes supported by the structure. We show that hybrid graphene-semiconductor waveguides can simultaneously phase-match these three interacting harmonics, increasing the total third-harmonic output by a factor of 5 compared to the non-cascaded regime.
Polarized and azimuthal dependencies of optical second harmonics generation (SHG) at the surface of noncentrosymmetric semiconductor crystals have been measured on polished surfaces of ZnSe(100), using a fundamental wavelength of 1.06$μm$. The SHG intensity patterns were analyzed for all four combination of p- and s-polarized incidence and output, considering both the bulk and surface optical nonlinearities in the electric dipole approximation. We found that the measurement using $S_{in}-S_{out}$ is particularly useful in determining the symmetry of the oxdized layer interface, which would low…
We report generation of high harmonics in a gas-jet pumped by pulses self-compressed in a He-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber through the soliton effect. The gas-jet is placed directly at the fiber output. As the energy increases the ionization-induced soliton blue-shift is transferred to the high harmonics, leading to a emission bands that are continuously tunable from 17 to 45 eV.
Angle-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) spectra of ZnO microwires show characteristic Fano resonances in the spectral vicinity of exciton-polariton modes. The output SHG spectra after SHG interacting with exciton polariton shows a resonant enhancement peak accompanied by a suppression dip originating from the constructive and destructive interference respectively. It is demonstrated that the Fano line shape, and thus the Fano asymmetry parameter q, can be tuned by the phase-shift of the two channels. The phase-dependent q was calculated and the model describes our experimental results …
By numerically integrating the three-dimensional Maxwell equations in the time domain with reference to a dispersive quadratically nonlinear material, we study second harmonic generation in planar photonic crystal microresonators. The proposed scheme allows efficient coupling of the pump radiation to the defect resonant mode. The out-coupled generated second harmonic is maximized by impedance matching the photonic crystal cavity to the output waveguide.
We demonstrate the simultaneous generation of second and third harmonic signals from a telecom wavelength pump in a gallium phosphide (GaP) microdisk. Using analysis of the power scaling of both the second and third harmonic outputs and calculations of nonlinear cavity mode coupling factors, we study contributions to the third harmonic signal from direct and cascaded sum frequency generation processes. We find that despite the relatively high material absorption in gallium phosphide at the third harmonic wavelength, both of these processes can be significant, with relative magnitudes that depe…

We observe second harmonic generation via random quasi-phase-matching in a 2.0 μm periodically poled, 1-cm-long, z-cut lithium tantalate. Away from resonance, the harmonic output profiles exhibit a characteristic pattern stemming from a stochastic domain distribution and a quadratic growth with the fundamental excitation, as well as a broadband spectral response. The results are in good agreement with a simple model and numerical simulations in the undepleted regime, assuming an anisotropic spread of the random nonlinear component.
The effect of slow light on second harmonic generation in a periodically poled $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear medium is investigated theoretically. A linear $π$ phase shifted grating is used to slow the group velocity of the fundamental frequency and the resulting field enhancement greatly increases the second harmonic conversion efficiency. A second linear grating at the input end ensures that all output is in the forward direction. We show that almost 100\% conversion efficiency can be achieved for continuous wave pumping at low intensities that generate negligible conversion in the absence of the slow…
We suggest a novel approach for generating second-harmonic radiation in subwavelength graphene waveguides. We demonstrate that quadratic phase matching between the plasmonic guided modes of different symmetries can be achieved in a planar double-layer geometry when conductivity of one of the layers becomes spatially modulated. We predict theoretically that, owing to graphene nonlocal conductivity, the second-order nonlinear processes can be actualized for interacting plasmonic modes with an effective grating coupler to allow external pumping of the structure and output of the radiation at the …
We report the first observation of nonlinear harmonic generation and sum frequency generation (SFG) coupled with stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) via the second-order (χ^{(2)}) and the third-order (χ^{(3)}) nonlinearities in a silica microbottle resonator. The visible light emission due to third harmonic generation (THG) was observed in both the output of a tapered fiber and the optical microscope images, which can be used to identify the axial mode profiles. SFG enabled by three- and four-wave mixing processes between the pump light and the light generated via SRS was also observed. Second H…
A ~545 mW single-frequency tunable 520 nm green laser has been demonstrated using a periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) bulk crystal based on single-pass third-harmonic generation (THG) of a 1560 nm laser via single-pass second-harmonic generation (SHG) followed by single-pass sum-frequency generation (SFG). In single-pass SHG, two cascaded periodically-poled magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate (PPMgO:LN) crystals were used, and ~3.5 W 780.25 nm doubled laser output is produced, corresponding to maximum doubling efficiency of 26.8%. The system can provide a pump source (52…
Giant optical nonlinearity is observed under both continuous-wave and pulsed excitation in a deterministically-coupled quantum dot-micropillar system, in a pronounced strong-coupling regime. Using absolute reflectivity measurements we determine the critical intracavity photon number as well as the input and output coupling efficiencies of the device. Thanks to a near-unity input-coupling efficiency, we demonstrate a record nonlinearity threshold of only 8 incident photons per pulse. The output-coupling efficiency is found to strongly influence this nonlinearity threshold. We show how the funda…
We report on a laser system at a wavelength of 495 nm which is suitable for the excitations of low lying Rydberg states of rubidium atoms. The system is based on frequency doubling of a seeded diode laser in a periodically poled waveguide crystal. We achieve an output power of up to 35 mW and prove the single frequency performance by direct two photon laser spectroscopy of the rubidium 14D_5/2 and 14D_3/2 states. The measured fine structure splitting is consistent with quantum defect theory calculations.
In this paper, we show that Inkjet Printing can be successfully applied to external-cavity vertically-emitting thin-film organic lasers, and can be used to generate a diffraction-limited output beam with an output energy as high as 33.6 uJ with a slope efficiency S of 34%. Laser emission shows to be continuously tunable from 570 to 670 nm using an intracavity polymer-based Fabry-Perot etalon. High-optical quality films with several um thicknesses are realized thanks to ink-jet printing. We introduce a new optical material where EMD6415 commercial ink constitutes the optical host matrix and exh…
The two output signals of quadrature phase interferometers allow to benefit both from the high sensitivity of interferometry (working inside a fringe) and from an extended input range (counting fringes). Their calibration to reach a linear output is traditionally performed using Heydemann's correction, which involves fitting one output versus the other by an ellipse. Here we present two alternative methods based on the linear response of the measurement to a sinusoidal input in time, which enables a direct calibration with an excellent linearity. A ten fold improvement with respect to the usua…
We report an environmentally stable nanotube mode-locked fibre laser producing linearly-polarized, nanosecond pulses. A simple all-polarization-maintaining fibre ring cavity is used, including 300 m of highly nonlinear fibre to elongate the cavity and increase intracavity dispersion and nonlinearity. The laser generates scalar pulses with a duration of 1.23 ns at a centre wavelength of 1042 nm, with 1.3-nm bandwidth and at 641-kHz repetition rate. Despite the long cavity, the output characteristics show no significant variation when the cavity is perturbed, and the degree of polarization remai…
We study the quantum noise in the harmonic mode of a singly resonant frequency doubler simultaneously driven in both modes. This simple extension of the frequency doubler greatly improves its performance as a bright squeezed light source. Specifically, for parameters corresponding to reported experiments, 80 % of noise suppression is easily achieved, the phase of the corresponding squeezed quadrature can be freely and easily chosen, and the output power is nearly doubled.
We generate coherent ultraviolet radiation at 313 nm as the third harmonic of an external-cavity diode laser. We use this radiation for laser cooling of trapped beryllium atomic ions and sympathetic cooling of co-trapped beryllium-hydride molecular ions. An LBO crystal in an enhancement cavity generates the second harmonic, and a BBO crystal in a doubly resonant enhancement cavity mixes this second harmonic with the fundamental to produce the third harmonic. Each enhancement cavity is preceded by a tapered amplifier to increase the fundamental light. The 36-mW output power of this all-semicond…

We demonstrate a compact and robust method for generating a 399-nm light resonant on the $^{1}S_{0}-^{1}P_{1}$ transition in ytterbium using a single-pass periodically poled LiNbO$_{3}$ waveguide for second harmonic generation (SHG). The obtained output power at 399 nm was 25 mW when a 798-nm fundamental power of 380 mW was coupled to the waveguide. We observed no degradation of the SHG power for 13 hours with a low power of 6 mW. The obtained SHG light has been used as a seed light for injection locking, which provides sufficient power for laser cooling ytterbium.
We report on a highly efficient waveguide resonator device for the production of 775 nm light using a titanium indiffused LiNbO3waveguide resonator. When scanning the resonance the device produces up to 110 mW of second harmonic power with 140 mW incident on the device - an external conversion efficiency of 75 %. The cavity length is also locked, using a Pound-Drever-Hall type locking scheme, involving feedback to either the cavity temperature or the laser frequency. With laser frequency feedback a stable output power of approximately 28 mW from a 52 mW pump is seen over one hour.
