Polarized and azimuthal dependencies of optical second harmonics generation (SHG) at the surface of noncentrosymmetric semiconductor crystals have been measured on polished surfaces of ZnSe(100), using a fundamental wavelength of 1.06$μm$. The SHG intensity patterns were analyzed for all four combination of p- and s-polarized incidence and output, considering both the bulk and surface optical nonlinearities in the electric dipole approximation. We found that the measurement using $S_{in}-S_{out}$ is particularly useful in determining the symmetry of the oxdized layer interface, which would lower the effective symmetry of the surface from $C_{4v}$ to $C_{2v}.$ We also have shown that the [011] and [0$\bar{1}$1] directions can be distinguished through the analysis of p-incident and p-output confugration.
We study optical harmonic generation on the 1S exciton-polariton in the semiconductor ZnSe. Intense and spectrally narrow exciton resonances are found in optical second (SHG), third (THG), and fourth (FHG) harmonic generation spectra. The resonances are shifted to higher energy by 3.2 meV from the exciton energy in the linear reflectivity spectrum. Additional resonances are observed in the THG and FHG spectra and assigned to combinations of incident and backscattered photons in the crystal. Rotational anisotropy diagrams are measured and further information on the origin of the optical harmoni…
Optical harmonic generation on excitons is found in ZnSe/BeTe quantum wells with type-II band alignment. Two experimental approaches with spectrally-broad femtosecond laser pulses and spectrally-narrow picosecond pulses are used for spectroscopic studies by means of second and third harmonic generation (SHG and THG). The SHG signal is symmetry-forbidden for light propagation along the structure's growth axis, which is the [001] crystal axis, but can be induced by an external magnetic field. The THG signal is detected at zero magnetic field and its intensity is field independent. A group theory…
Lasers capable of generating attosecond X-ray pulses in the water window (282 to 533 eV) through high-order harmonic generation are normally based on inefficient, multi-stage optical parametric amplifiers or optical parametric chirped pulse amplifiers pumped by femtosecond or picosecond lasers. Here we report a very efficient single amplification stage laser based on traditional chirped pulse amplification capable of producing 3 mJ, near-transform limited 44 fs (<6 cycles), 1 kHz pulses centered at 2.5 micrometer. The 68 GW peak power is the highest value ever reached at this wavelength. In or…
Terahertz field-induced second harmonic generation (TFISH) is a technique for optical detection of broad-band THz fields. We show that by placing an iris at the interaction volume of the THz and optical fields, the TFISH signal increases by few ten-fold in atmospheric air. The iris-assisted TFISH amplification is characterized at varying air pressures and probe intensities and provides an elegant platform for studying nonlinear phase-matching in the gas phase.

Optical materials with centrosymmetry, such as silicon and germanium, are unfortunately absent of second-order nonlinear optical responses, hindering their developments in efficient nonlinear optical devices. Here, a design with an array of slotted nanocubes is proposed to realize remarkable second harmonic generation (SHG) from the centrosymmetric silicon, which takes advantage of enlarged surface second-order nonlinearity, strengthened electric field over the surface of the air-slot, as well as the resonance enhancement by the bound states in the continuum. Compared with that from the array …
We investigate the generation of broadband terahertz (THz) pulses with phase singularity from air plasmas created by fundamental and second harmonic laser pulses. We show that when the second harmonic beam carries a vortex charge, the THz beam acquires a vortex structure as well. A generic feature of such THz vortex is that the intensity is modulated along the azimuthal angle, which can be attributed to the spatially varying relative phase difference between the two pump harmonics. Fully space and time resolved numerical simulations reveal that transverse instabilities of the pump further affe…
Electro-optically tunable second-harmonic generation in lithium niobate metasurfaces boosted by Brillouin zone folding induced bound states in the continuum
Third-order harmonic generation (THG) plays a vital role in microscopy, optical communications etc. Conventional methods of obtaining efficient THG in macroscopic crystal is already mature; however, they will finally limit the miniaturization and integration of on-chip laser sources. To date, THG from either photonic crystals or metamaterials provide compact photonic platforms, however selection of materials remains elusive. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a giant enhancement of THG efficiency from an air/high index Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST225) /gold multi-layered Fabry-Perot cavity. At cavity res…
