The effect of slow light on second harmonic generation in a periodically poled $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear medium is investigated theoretically. A linear $π$ phase shifted grating is used to slow the group velocity of the fundamental frequency and the resulting field enhancement greatly increases the second harmonic conversion efficiency. A second linear grating at the input end ensures that all output is in the forward direction. We show that almost 100\% conversion efficiency can be achieved for continuous wave pumping at low intensities that generate negligible conversion in the absence of the slow-light grating.
We report on backward second-harmonic-generation in bulk periodically poled congruent lithium niobate with a 3.2 microns period. A tunable continuous-wave Ti:sapphire laser allowed us exciting two resonant quasi-phase-matching orders in the backward configuration. The resonances were also resolved by temperature tuning and interpolated with standard theory to extract relevant information on the sample.
We report an application of the tri-dimensional pseudo-spectral time domain algorithm, that solves with accuracy the nonlinear Maxwell's equations, to predict second harmonic generation in lithium niobate ridge-type waveguides with high index contrast. Characteristics of the nonlinear process such as conversion efficiency as well as impact of the multimode character of the waveguide are investigated as a function of the waveguide geometry in uniformly and periodically poled medium.
We study the chirality of periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) by electro-optic (EO) effect. It shows that optical propagation is reciprocal in MgO:PPLN when quasi-phase-matching (QPM) condition is satisfied, which is similar to natural optical active material like quartz. The specific rotation of MgO:PPLN by EO effect is shown to be proportional to the transverse electric field, making large polarization rotation in optical active material with small size possible. We also demonstrate that the chirality of MgO:PPLN can be controlled by external electric field.
Optical waveguides made from periodically poled materials provide high confinement of light and enable the generation of new wavelengths via quasi-phase-matching, making them a key platform for nonlinear optics and photonics. However, such devices are not typically employed for high-harmonic generation. Here, using 200-fs, 10-nJ-level pulses of 4100 nm light at 1 MHz, we generate high harmonics up to the 13th harmonic (315 nm) in a chirped, periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide. Total conversion efficiencies into the visible--ultraviolet region are as high as 10 percent. We find …
We observe second harmonic generation via random quasi-phase-matching in a 2.0 μm periodically poled, 1-cm-long, z-cut lithium tantalate. Away from resonance, the harmonic output profiles exhibit a characteristic pattern stemming from a stochastic domain distribution and a quadratic growth with the fundamental excitation, as well as a broadband spectral response. The results are in good agreement with a simple model and numerical simulations in the undepleted regime, assuming an anisotropic spread of the random nonlinear component.
We have operated a CW triply resonant OPO using a PPLN crystal pumped by a Nd:YAG laser at 1.06 micron and generating signal and idler modes in the 2-2.3 micron range. The OPO was operated stably in single mode operation over large periods of time with a pump threshold as low as 500 microwatts.
Second harmonic generation is investigated in lithium niobate channels realized by proton exchange and quasi-phase-matched by surface periodic-poling. The reduction in conversion efficiency at high powers is interpreted in terms of multi-photon absorption via two-color terms, yielding an estimate of the dominating three-photon process.
We propose a new class of photonic devices based on periodic stress fields in silicon that enable second-order nonlinearity as well as quasi-phase matching. Periodically-poled silicon (PePSi) adds the periodic poling capability to silicon photonics, and allows the excellent crystal quality and advanced manufacturing capabilities of silicon to be harnessed for devices based on second-order nonlinear effects. As an example of the utility of the PePSi technology, we present simulations showing that mid-wave infrared radiation can be efficiently generated through difference frequency generation fr…
We demonstrate a uniform high spectral brightness and peak power density all-fiber supercontinuum source. The source consists of a nanosecond Ytterbium fiber laser and an optimal length PCF producing a continuum with a peak power density of 2 W/nm and less than 5 dB of spectral variation between 590 to 1500 nm. The Watt level per nm peak power density enables the use of such sources for the characterization of nonlinear materials. Application of the source is demonstrated with the characterization of several periodically poled crystals.
We experimentally demonstrate the orbital angular momentum (OAM) conversion by the coupled nonlinear optical processes in a quasi-periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal. In such crystal, third-harmonic generation (THG) is realized by the coupled second-harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) processes, i.e., SHG is dependent on SFG and vice versa. The OAMs of the interacting waves are proved to be conserved in such coupled nonlinear optical processes. As increasing the input OAM in the experiment, the conversion efficiency decreases because of the reduced fundamental power inte…
Temporal cloaks have inspired the innovation of research on security and efficiency of quantum and fiber communications for concealing temporal events. The existing temporal cloaking approaches possessing ps ~ns cloaking windows employed the third-order nonlinearity mostly. Here we explore a temporal cloak for perpetually concealing pulse events using high efficiency second-order nonlinearity. A temporal pulse event was cloaked as a continuous wave with constant intensity and restored by polarization dependent sum frequency generation processes between the continuous wave and probe. The variet…
We carried out second-harmonic generation in quasi-phase-matched α-phase lithium niobate channel waveguides realized by proton exchange and surface periodic poling. Owing to a limited ferroelectric domain depth, we could observe the interplay between second-harmonic generation and self-phase modulation due to cascading and cubic effects, resulting in a nonlinear resonance shift. Data reduction allowed us to evaluate both the quadratic nonlinearity in the near infrared as well as the depth of the uninverted domains.

Second-order optical nonlinear effects (second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation) are demonstrated in the telecommunication band by periodic poling of thin films of lithium niobate wafer-bonded on silicon substrates and rib-loaded with silicon nitride channels to attain ridge waveguide with cross-sections of ~ 2 μm2. The compactness of the waveguides results in efficient second-order nonlinear devices. A nonlinear conversion of 8% is obtained with a pulsed input in 4 mm long waveguides. The choice of silicon substrate makes the platform potentially compatible with silicon photonics, and th…
A new method for characterization of periodically poled crystals is developed based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The method is demonstrated on crystals of Y:LiNbO3, Mg:Y:LiNbO3 with non-uniform periodically poled structures, obtained directly under Czochralski growth procedure and designed for application of OPO in the mid infrared range. Infrared dispersion of refractive index, effective working periods and wavelengths of OPO were determined by special treatment of frequency-angular spectra of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the visible range. Thin-film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) has emerged as a superior integrated-photonics platform for linear, nonlinear, and electro-optics. Here we combine quasi-phase-matching, dispersion engineering, and tight mode confinement to realize nonlinear parametric processes with both high efficiency and wide wavelength tunability. On a millimeter-long, Z-cut LNOI waveguide, we demonstrate ultra-efficient ($1900\pm500 \% $W$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$) and highly tunable (-1.71 nm/K) second-harmonic generation from 1530 to 1583 nm by type-0 quasi-phase-matching. We report the experimental demonstration of directly produced polarization squeezing at 1064 nm from a type I optical parametric amplifier (OPA) based on a periodically poled KTP crystal (PPKTP). The orthogonal polarization modes of the polarization squeezed state are both defined by the OPA cavity mode, and the birefringence induced by the PPKTP crystal is compensated for by a second, but inactive, PPKTP crystal. Stokes parameter squeezing of 3.6 dB and anti squeezing of 9.4 dB is observed.
In this contribution we investigate the impact of lateral leakage for linear and nonlinear optical waveguides in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). Silicon nitride (SiN) loaded and direct patterned lithium niobate cross-sections are investigated. We show that lateral leakage can take place for the TE mode in LNOI ridge waveguides (X-cut lithium niobate), due to the birefringence of the material. This work gives guidelines for designing waveguides in LNOI that do not suffer from the lateral leakage effect. By applying these design considerations, we avoided the lateral leakage effect at the s…
The evolution versus pump power of the spectrum of a singly resonant optical parametric oscillator based on an MgO-doped periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal is observed. The onset of cascade Raman lasing due to stimulated Raman scattering in the nonlinear crystal is analyzed. Spurious frequency doubling and sum-frequency generation phenomena are observed and understood. A strong reduction of the intracavity Raman scattering is obtained by a careful adjustment of the cavity losses.
Low-noise quantum frequency conversion in periodically-poled nonlinear crystals has proved challenging when the pump wavelength is shorter than the target wavelength. This is - at least in large part - a consequence of the parasitic spontaneous parametric down-conversion of pump photons, whose efficiency is increased by fabrication errors in the periodic poling. Here we characterise the poling quality of commercial periodically-poled bulk potassium titanyl phosphate (ppKTP) by measuring the sum-frequency generation (SFG) efficiency over a large phase mismatch range from 0 to more than 400$π$. …
Theory of the optical parametric amplification at high-frequency pumping in crystals with a regular space modulation of the sign of nonlinear coupling coefficient of interacting waves is developed. By applying the matrix method, the theory is based on a step-by-step approach. It is shown that, in the case where the pumping intensity is less than some critical value, the spatial dynamics of the signal intensity inside a separate layer with the constant nonlinear coefficient has an oscillatory behavior and the change of the signal intensity from layer to layer is defined, in general, by the powe…
Lithium niobate (LN), dubbed by many as the silicon of photonics, has recently risen to the forefront of chip-scale nonlinear optics research since its demonstration as an ultralow-loss integrated photonics platform. Due to its significant quadratic nonlinearity ($χ^{(2)}$), LN inspires many important applications such as second-harmonic generation (SHG), spontaneous parametric down-conversion, and optical parametric oscillation. Here, we demonstrate high-efficiency SHG in dual-resonant, periodically poled z-cut LN microrings, where quasi-phase matching is realized by field-assisted domain eng…
We demonstrate a compact and robust method for generating a 399-nm light resonant on the $^{1}S_{0}-^{1}P_{1}$ transition in ytterbium using a single-pass periodically poled LiNbO$_{3}$ waveguide for second harmonic generation (SHG). The obtained output power at 399 nm was 25 mW when a 798-nm fundamental power of 380 mW was coupled to the waveguide. We observed no degradation of the SHG power for 13 hours with a low power of 6 mW. The obtained SHG light has been used as a seed light for injection locking, which provides sufficient power for laser cooling ytterbium.

We report the simultaneous quasi-phase-matching of all three possible nonlinearities for propagation along the X axis of periodocally poled (PP) KTiOPO4 (KTP) for second-harmonic generation of 745 nm pulsed light from 1490nm subpicosecond pulses in a PPKTP crystal with a 45.65 micrometer poling period. This confirms the recent Sellmeier fits of KTP by K. Kato and E. Takaoka [Appl. Opt. 41, 5040 (2002)]. Such coincident nonlinearities are of importance for realizing compact sources of multipartite continuous-variable entanglement [Pfister et al., Phys. Rev. A 70, 020302 (2004)] and we propose a…
Successful phase-matching methods for Third Harmonics Generation (THG) include phase-matching in birefringent crystal and quasi-phase-matching (QPM) in crystal with periodically poled domains. However, these methods are not feasible in some isotropic materials (e.g. fused silica and photosensitive silicate glass). It was known that volume-grating in isotropic materials can independently generate frequency-converted waves. One of disadvantages of single-layer volume-grating is that the brightness of harmonic emission can not be enhanced by increasing the grating thickness. In this paper, a THG …
We demonstrate efficient first-order quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation in a surface periodically poled Ti:indiffused lithium niobate waveguide; 6 mW of continuous-wave blue radiation (wavelength = 412.6 nm) was produced showing the potential of surface domain inversion for efficient nonlinear waveguide interactions.
Using a canonical pump-probe experimental technique, we studied the terahertz (THz) waves generation and detection via optical rectification and mixing in Czochralski-grown periodically poled Mg:Y:LiNbO3 (PPLN) crystals. THz waves with frequencies at 1.37 THz and 0.68 THz as well as 1.8 THz were obtained for PPLN with nonlinear grating periods of 0.03 and 0.06 mm, respectively. A general theoretical model was developed by considering the dispersion and damping of low frequency phonon-polariton mode. Our results show that THz waves are generated in forward and backward directions via pumping pu…
Periodically patterned columnar thin films (PP-CTFs) were made by evaporating CaF2 and directing the vapor flux obliquely towards lithographically fabricated micrometer/sub-micrometer gratings. The growth of the PP-CTFs was controlled by the deposition rate to form prismatic air cavities within them and they function like blazed diffraction gratings with asymmetric diffraction patterns and diffraction efficiencies upto 52% in transmission at visible wavelengths. Scalar diffraction theory qualitatively explained the measured diffraction efficiencies.
Domain engineering technology in lithium tantalate is a well studied approach for nonlinear optical applications. However, for several cases of interest, the realization of short period structures (< 2 μm) is required, which make their characterization difficult with standard techniques. In this work, we show that high resolution x-ray diffraction is a convenient approach for the characterization of such structures, allowing us to obtain in a nondestructive fashion information such as the average domain period, the domain wall inclination, and the overall structure quality.

The absence of the single-photon nonlinearity has been a major roadblock in developing quantum photonic circuits at optical frequencies. In this paper, we demonstrate a periodically-poled thin film lithium niobate microring resonator (PPLNMR) that reaches 5,000,000%/W second harmonic conversion efficiency---almost 20-fold enhancement over the state-of-the-art---by accessing its largest $χ^{(2)}$ tensor component $d_{33}$ via quasi-phase matching. The corresponding single photon coupling rate $g/2π$ is estimated to be 1.2 MHz, which is an important milestone as it approaches the dissipation rat…

Here we demonstrate third harmonic generation of spatially structured light including vector optical fields, in a nonlinear Sagnac interferometer containing a carefully designed quasi-periodically poled po…
The amplified spontaneous emission from a superluminescent diode was frequency doubled in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide crystal. The temporally incoherent radiation of such a superluminescent diode is characterized by a relatively broad spectral bandwidth and thermal-like photon statistics, as the measured degree of second order coherence, g$^{(2)}$(0)=1.9$\pm$0.1, indicates. Despite the non-optimized scenario in the spectral domain, we achieve six orders of magnitude higher conversion efficiency than previously reported with truly incoherent light. This is possible by using s…

Optical phased arrays (OPA) with high integration, fast speed, low power consumption, and high steering resolution are critical components in the emerging photonic integrated circuit (PIC), LiDAR, free space optical communication, 3D printing, and so on. According to the OPA working principle, its function is generally achieved by independently controlling the phase of the array elements. In practice, this presents a major challenge to overcome critical trade-offs of the element numbers, the control electronics, and the power consumption. Here, we give an alternative OPA solution to overcome t…

We investigate a theoretical model for a dynamic Moiré grating which is capable of producing slow and stopped light with improved performance when compared with a static Moiré grating. A Moiré grating superimposes two grating periods which creates a narrow slow light resonance between two band gaps. A Moiré grating can be made dynamic by varying its coupling strength in time. By increasing the coupling strength the reduction in group velocity in the slow light resonance can be improved by many orders of magnitude while still maintaining the wide bandwidth of the initial, weak grating. We show …
