Harmonic and Intermodulation distortions occur when a physical system is excited with a single or several frequencies and when the relationship between the input and output is non-linear. Working with non-linearities in the Frequency domain is not straightforward specially when the relationship between the input and output is not trivial. We outline the complete derivation of the Harmonic and Intermodulation distortions from basic principles to a general physical system. For illustration, the procedure is applied to the Single Mode laser diode where the relationship of input to output is non-trivial. The distortions terms are extracted directly from the Laser Diode rate equations and the method is tested by comparison to many results cited in the literature. This methodology is general enough to be applied to the extraction of distortion terms to any desired order in many physical systems in a general and systematic way.
We report electro-absorption modulation of light at around 1550 nm in a unipolar InGaAlAs optical waveguide containing a InGaAs/AlAs double-barrier resonant tunneling diode (DB-RTD). The RTD peak-to-valley transition increases the electric field across the waveguide, which shifts the core material absorption band-edge to longer wavelengths via the Franz-Keldysh effect, thus changing the light-guiding characteristics of the waveguide. Low-frequency characterisation of a device shows modulation up to 28 dB at 1565 nm. When dc biased close to the negative differential conductance (NDC) region, th…
The characteristics of mid-infrared laser diodes have been investigated before and after the patterning of sub-wavelength metallic apertures on the emitting facet. Before modification of the facet the emitted spectrum consisted of a large number of peaks associated with different spatial modes, whereas afterwards the spectrum was dominated by a single peak. Simulations showed that the patterning of the facet caused the effective reflectivity to be different for each lateral mode, suggesting that the peak in the measured spectra is associated with the single lateral mode which is most strongly …
We present a method for remote interrogation of passive fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot resonators, employing current modulation of the diode laser source. With the presence of both RF amplitude and frequency modulation, it is a variant of the ultra-sensitive Pound-Drever-Hall laser frequency locking technique. We demonstrate that current modulation and interferometric demodulation removes the need for a phase modulator in the sensing architecture.
We numerically investigate the effect of phase-amplitude coupling modulation on power spectra in semiconductor lasers subject to optical injection in a face to face configuration, when a non-negligible injection delay time is taken into account. We find that as phase-amplitude coupling factor alpha varies, the system goes through a sequence of phase transactions between In-phase locking states to anti-phase locking states via phase-flip bifurcation. Moreover, we observed the signature of frequency discretization (Frequency Island) and uncovered the physical mechanism for the existence of multi…
We present a current-modulation technique for diode-laser systems that is specifically designed for high-bandwidth laser-frequency stabilization and wideband frequency modulation with a flat transfer function. It consists of a dedicated current source and an impedance-matching circuit both placed close to the laser diode. The transfer behaviour of the system is analysed under realistic conditions employing an external-cavity diode laser (ECDL) system. We achieve a phase lag less than 90$°$ up to 25 MHz and a gain flatness of $\pm$ 3 dB in the frequency range of DC to 100 MHz while the passive …
A phase modulated RF current source is applied to an injection locked diode laser operating at $780\unit{nm}$. This produces tunable phase modulated sidebands of the laser suitable for stabilizing the length of an optical transfer cavity using the Pound-Drever-Hall technique. The Pound-Drever-Hall signal is anti-symmetric about the lock point, despite the presence of significant diode laser amplitude modulation. The stabilized optical transfer cavity is used to frequency stabilize a 776 nm external cavity diode laser. The stability and tunability of this transfer cavity locked laser is establi…
It is shown that optical synthesis of terahertz and millimeter-wave frequencies can be achieved using two-mode and mode-locked discrete mode diode lasers. These edge-emitting devices incorporate a spatially varying refractive index profile which is designed according to the spectral output desired of the laser. We first demonstrate a device which supports two primary modes simultaneously with high spectral purity. In this case sinusoidal modulation of the optical intensity at terahertz frequencies can be obtained. Cross saturation of the material gain in quantum well lasers prevents simultaneo…
We experimentally observed self-injection locking regime of the gain-switched laser to high-Q optical microresonator. We revealed that comb generated by the gain-switched laser experiences a dramatic reduce of comb teeth linewidths in this regime. We demonstrated the Lorentzian linewidth of the comb teeth of sub-kHz scale as narrow as for non-switched self-injection locked laser. Such setup allows generation of high-contrast electrically-tunable optical frequency combs with tunable comb line spacing in a wide range from 10 kHz up to 10 GHz. The characteristics of the generated combs were studi…
We propose a polarization modulation scheme of electromagnetic (EM) waves through reflection of a tunable metamaterial reflector/absorber. By constructing the metamaterial with resonant unit cells coupled by diodes, we demonstrate that the EM reflections for orthogonal polarized incident waves can be tuned independently by adjusting the bias voltages on the corresponding diodes. Owing to this feature, the reflected EM waves can be electrically controlled to a linear polarization with continuously tunable azimuth angle from 0o to 90o at the resonant frequency, or an elliptical polarization with…
Detailed polarization properties have been examined in laser-diode-pumped (LD-pumped) micro-grained ceramic Nd:YAG lasers in different microchip cavity configurations. Stable linearly-polarized single-frequency oscillations, whose polarization direction coincide with that of an LD pump light, were observed in an external cavity scheme. While, in the case of a thin-slice laser scheme with coated reflective ends, elliptically-polarized single-frequency operations took place in the low pump-power regime and dynamic instabilities appeared, featuring self-induced antiphase modulations among counter…
We study the injection locking bistability of a specially engineered two-color semiconductor Fabry-Perot laser. Oscillation in the uninjected primary mode leads to a bistability of single mode and two-color equilibria. With pulsed modulation of the injected power we demonstrate an all-optical memory element based on this bistability, where the uninjected primary mode is switched with 35 dB intensity contrast. Using experimental and theoretical analysis, we describe the associated bifurcation structure, which is not found in single mode systems with optical injection.
It is demonstrated that RF current modulation of a frequency stabilized injection-locked diode laser allows the stabilization of an optical cavity to adjustable lengths, by variation of the RF frequency. This transfer cavity may be used to stabilize another laser at an arbitrary wavelength, in the absence of atomic or molecular transitions suitable for stabilization. Implementation involves equipment and techniques commonly used in laser cooling and trapping laboratories, and does not require electro- or acousto-optic modulators. With this technique we stabilize a transfer cavity using a RF cu…
The nonlinear properties of a metamaterial sample composed of double-layer metallic patterns and voltage controllable diodes are experimentally investigated. Second harmonics and spectrum modulations are clearly observed in a wide band of microwave frequencies, showing that this kind of metamaterial is not only tunable by low DC bias voltage, but also behaves strong nonlinear property under a small power incidence. These properties are difficult to be found in normal, naturally occurring materials.
We characterize a semiconductor external cavity diode laser whose optical feedback is provided by a guided mode resonance filter (GMRF). We focus on the spectral properties. The wavelength of operation falls in the telecom range (1506 nm). The GMRF acting both as a wavelength intracavity filter and feedback mirror allows for a compact laser design. The single-mode operation is verified in a wide range of driving currents. We finely tune the cavity length to adjust the frequency by 14 GHz without mode-hops in agreement with the expected free-spectral range of the resonator $\sim$20 GHz. The com…
We demonstrated that an iodine stabilized Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) diode based laser system lasing at a wavelength in close proximity to $λ= 633\,$nm could be used as an alternative laser source to the He-Ne lasers in both scientific and industrial metrology. This yields additional advantages besides the optical frequency stability and coherence: inherent traceability, wider optical frequency tuning range, higher output power and high frequency modulation capability. We experimentally investigated the characteristics of the laser source in two major steps: first using a wavelength met…
We report on the characterization of the timing stability of passively mode-locked discrete mode diode laser sources. These are edge-emitting devices with a spatially varying refractive index profile for spectral filtering. Two devices with a mode-locking frequency of 100 GHz are characterized. The first device is designed to support a comb of six modes and generates near Fourier limited 1.9 ps pulses. The second supports four primary modes resulting in a sinusoidal modulation of the optical intensity. Using a cross-correlation technique, we measured a 20 fs pulse to pulse timing jitter for th…
We demonstrate how the presence of gain-loss contrast between two coupled identical resonators can be used as a new degree of freedom to enhance the modulation frequency response of laser diodes. An electrically pumped microring laser system with a bending radius of 50 μm is fabricated on an InAlGaAs/InP MQW p-i-n structure. The room temperature continuous wave (CW) laser threshold current of the device is 27 mA. By adjusting the ratio between the injection current levels in the two coupled microrings, our experimental results clearly show a bandwidth improvement by up to 1.63 times the fundam…
We investigate zero-lag synchronization (ZLS) between delay-coupled diode lasers system with mutual optical injection in a face-to-face configuration. We observed numerical evidence of such ZLS without using any relay element or mediating laser. In addition, simulation also demonstrate that this kind of robust ZLS occurs around the phase flip transition regimes where in-phase and anti-phase oscillations coexist due to delayed coupling induced modulation of the phase-amplitude coupling factor α. Our finding could be implemented in highly secured optical communication network as well as the unde…
In current paper, distortions in digital demodulation schemes with harmonic phase modulation for interferometric optical sensors are considered. In particular, the influence of target signal variations on phase demodulation errors is theoretically evaluated. An analytical expression, describing the phase error magnitude dependence on first derivative and mean value of measured signal and amplitude of the phase modulation in case of simple 4-point demodulation algorithm is derived. After that, an approach for synthesizing algorithms with suppressed sensitivity to target signal variations is dev…
Isotope selective optical excitation of atoms is important for experiments with neutral atoms, metrology, and work with trapped ions, including quantum information processing. Polarization-enhanced absorption spectroscopy is used to frequency stabilise a tunable external cavity laser diode system at 398.9 nm for isotope selective photoionization of neutral Yb atoms. This spectroscopy technique is used to measure isotope resolved dispersive features from transitions within a see through configuration Ytterbium hollow-cathode discharge lamp. Fifty years after the invention of the laser diode and fourty years after the report of the butterfly effect - i.e. the unpredictability of deterministic chaos, it is said that a laser diode behaves like a damped nonlinear oscillator. Hence no chaos can be generated unless with additional forcing or parameter modulation. Here we report the first counter-example of a free-running laser diode generating chaos. The underlying physics is a nonlinear coupling between two elliptically polarized modes in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. We identify chaos in experimental time-series and show …
We have developed experimental methods for the generation of chirped laser pulses of controlled frequency evolution in the nanosecond pulse length range for coherent atomic interaction studies. The pulses are sliced from the radiation of a cw external cavity diode laser while its drive current, and consequently its frequency, are sinusoidally modulated. By the proper choice of the modulation parameters, as well as of the timing of pulse slicing, we can produce a wide variety of frequency sweep ranges during the pulse. In order to obtain the required frequency chirp, we need to stabilize the ce…
A tunable diode laser spectrometer has been employed to examine the overtone absorption lines of $^{12}$CH$_4$ in the region around 12780 cm$^{-1}$ (780 nm) at room temperature. The spectrometer sources are commercially available tunable diode lasers operating in "free-running" mode. The measurement of the line positions within 0.01 cm$^{-1}$ has been possible by the use of the wavelength modulation spectroscopy and the second harmonic detection techniques that permitted the observation of minimum optical absorbances of the order of $\approx 10^{-6}$. The weakest observed lines of the band hav…
The stabilization of lasers to absolute frequency references is a fundamental requirement in several areas of atomic, molecular and optical physics. A range of techniques are available to produce a suitable reference onto which one can 'lock' the laser, many of which depend on the specific internal structure of the reference or are sensitive to laser intensity noise. We present a novel method using the frequency modulation of an acousto-optic modulator's carrier (drive) signal to generate two spatially separated beams, with a frequency difference of only a few MHz. These beams are used to prob…
Simulations have shown that space-charge effects can lead to regular modulation of photoemitted beams in vacuum diodes with gap sizes on the order of 1 micron and accelerating voltage on the order of 1V. These modulations are in the THz regime and can be tuned by simply changing the emitter area or accelerating vacuum field. The average current in the diode corresponds to the Child-Langmuir current, but the amplitude of the oscillations is affected by various factors. Given the small size and voltage of the system, the maximum radiated AC power is expected to be small. In this work we show tha…
A combination of optical feedback self-locking of a continuous-wave distributed feedback diode laser to a V-shaped high finesse cavity, laser phase modulation at a frequency equal to the free spectral range of the V-cavity and detection of the transmitted laser beam at this high modulation frequency is described for possible application in cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy. In order to estimate an absorbance baseline noise of laser intensity and frequency modulated light triplet passed through the V-cavity in open air, a 1.5-cm long optical cell filled by C2H2 at low pressure was placed b…
Chip-scale frequency comb generators have the potential to become key building blocks of compact wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transceivers in future metropolitan or campus-area networks. Among the various comb generator concepts, quantum-dash (QD) mode-locked laser diodes (MLLD) stand out as a particularly promising option, combining small footprint with simple operation by a DC current and offering flat broadband comb spectra. However, the data transmission performance achieved with QD-MLLD was so far limited by strong phase noise of the individual comb tones, restricting experiment…
Optical generation of millimeter-waves (mm-wave) is made possible by an optical heterodyne of two diode lasers on a uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD). We utilized this technique to produce a mm-wave oscillator with desirable phase-noise characteristics, which were inherited from a pair of narrow-linewidth diode lasers. We present the long-term stabilization of our oscillator, achieved by referencing it to a rotational transition of gaseous nitrous oxide (N2O). Direct frequency modulation spectroscopy at 301.442 GHz (J=11) generated an error signal that disciplined the frequency differe…
Using the Jones formalism, it is shown that electro-optic modulators used for phase modulation generate a modulation of the output polarization induced by the difference of phase modulation depth along the crystallographic axes of the modulator. We study two consequences of this polarization modulation in the fiber setups, limiting the performance of high sensitivity measurement devices. The first one is its partial conversion into a residual amplitude modulation (RAM) within any component presenting polarization dependent losses (PDL). The second one is a new effect that consists of the disto…
An experimental comparison of the conversion gain and harmonic distortion performance between Switching and Modulation architectures of an all-optical photonic sampler mixer up-converter using a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier-based Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (SOA-MZI) is presented. The process of frequency up-conversion from 1 GHz to 9 GHz is evaluated. Because of their different principle of operation, the Switching architecture demonstrates higher positive conversion gain by approximately 6 dB and 8 dB for standard and differential configuration, respectively, while the Modulation architec…
We describe a compact waveguide amplifier system that is suitable for optically pumping rubidium magnetometers. The system consists of an auto-locking vacuum-sealed external cavity diode laser, a semiconductor tapered amplifier and a pulsing unit based on an acousto-optic modulator. The diode laser utilises optical feedback from an interference filter to narrow the linewidth of an inexpensive laser diode to ~500 kHz. This output is scannable over an 8 GHz range (at 780 nm) and can be locked without human intervention to any spectral marker in an expandable library of reference spectra, using t…
Dissipative Kerr-microresonator soliton combs (hereafter called soliton combs) has been rapidly progressing as compact frequency combs. Comb mode scanning of the soliton combs with a large range and fast speed is of paramount importance for applications such as LiDAR and spectroscopy, requiring large and rapid frequency scanning of a pump continuous-wave (CW) laser as well as resonance frequency of a microresonator. Here, we demonstrate the generation of a soliton comb by a distributed feedback (DFB) laser toward the comb mode scanning with a large range and fast speed. Compared with conventio…
