We derive the Schroedinger equation for a spinless charged particle constrained to a curved surface with electric and magnetics fields applied. The particle is confined on the surface using a thin-layer procedure, giving rise to the well-known geometric potential. The electric and magnetic fields are included via the four-potential. We find that there is no coupling between the fields and the surface curvature and that, with a proper choice of the gauge, the surface and transverse dynamics are exactly separable. Finally, the Hamiltonian for the cylinder, sphere and torus are analytically derived.
Starting with the first-order singular Lagrangian describing the dynamical system with 2nd-class constraints, the noncommutative quantum mechanics on a curved space is investigated by the constraint star-product quantization formalism of the projection operator method. Imposing the additional constraints to eliminate the reduntant degrees of freedom, it is shown that the resultant noncommutative quantum system on the curved space is represented with two kinds of the constrained quantum systems, which are equivalent with each other. Then, it is shown that the resultant Hamiltonians contain the …
In Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, we deduce the effective quantum mechanics for a particle confined to a curved surface by using the thin-layer quantization scheme. We find that the spin effect caused by confined potential as the results of relativistic correction in the non-relativistic limit. Furthermore, the spin connection appeared in curved surface which depends on curvature contributes a Zeeman-like gap in the relativistic correction term. In addition, the confined potential also induces a curvature-independent energy shift, which is from the zitterbewegung effect. As an example, we ap…
A quantum mechanical path integral derivation is given of a thermal propagator in non-static Gui spacetime. The thermal nature of the propagator is understood in terms of homotopically non-trivial paths in the configuration space appropriate to tortoise coordinates. The connection to thermal emission from collapsing black holes is discussed.
The formalism for histories-based generalized quantum mechanics developed in two earlier papers is applied to the treatment of histories (of particles or fields or more general objects) in curved spacetimes (which need not admit foliation in spacelike hypersurfaces). The construction of the space of temporal supports (a partial semigroup generalizing the space of finite time sequences employed in traditional temporal description of histories) employs spacelike subsets of spacetime having dimensionality less than or equal to three. Definition of symmetry is sharpened by the requirement of conti…
The propagator of a spinless particle is calculated from the quantum mechanical path integral formalism in static curved spacetimes endowed with event-horizons. A toy model, the Gui spacetime, and the 2D and 4D Schwarzschild black holes are considered. The role of the topology of the coordinates configuration space is emphasised in this framework. To cover entirely the above spacetimes with a single set of coordinates, tortoise coordinates are extended to complex values. It is shown that the homotopic properties of the complex tortoise configuration space imply the thermal behaviour of the pro…
We derive the Pauli equation for a charged spin particle confined to move on a spatially curved surface $\mathcal{S}$ in an electromagnetic field. Using the thin-layer quantization scheme to constrain the particle on $\mathcal{S}$, and in the transformed spinor representations, we obtain the well-known geometric potential $V_g$ and the presence of $e^{-iφ}$, which can generate additive spin connection geometric potentials by the curvilinear coordinate derivatives, and we find that the two fundamental evidences in the literature [Giulio Ferrari and Giampaolo Cuoghi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 230403…
In this work, Schrödinger and Dirac equations will be examined in geometries that confine the particles to hypersurfaces. For this purpose, two methods will be considered. The first method is the thin layer method which relies on explicit use of geometrical relations and the squeezing of a certain coordinate of space (or spacetime). The second is Dirac's quantization procedure involving the modification of canonical quantization making use of the geometrical constraints. For the Dirac equation, only the first method will be considered. Lastly, the results of the two methods will be compared an…
A fundamentally different approach to path integral quantum mechanics in curved space-time is presented, as compared to the standard approaches currently available in the literature. Within the context of scalar particle propagation in a locally curved background, such as described by Fermi or Riemann normal co-ordinates, this approach requires use of a constructed operator to rotate the initial, intermediate, and final position ket vectors onto their respective local tangent spaces, defined at each local time step along some arbitrary classical reference worldline. Local time translation is d…
This work presents some peculiarities of the near quantum ground state behaviour of curved (phonon trapping) Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) cavities when compared to a conventional mechanical resonator. The curved cavity system resolves the quandary of the conventional mechanical system where the Bose-Einstein distribution requires higher frequencies for lower quantum occupation factors contrary to the constraint of an inverse frequency dependence of the quantum fluctuations of displacement. We demonstrate how the non-trivial cavity geometry can lead to better phonon trapping, enhancing the variance…
In this article we show that the fundamental equations of relativistic Bohmian mechanics for a single particle can be derived from a scalar theory of curved space-time.
We report on a direct experimental observation of dynamic localization (DL) of light in sinusoidally-curved Lithium-Niobate waveguide arrays which provides the optical analog of DL for electrons in periodic potentials subjected to ac electric fields as originally proposed by Dunlap and Kenkre [D.H. Dunlap and V.M. Kenkre, Phys. Rev. B 34, 3625 (1986)]. The theoretical condition for DL in a sinusoidal field is experimentally demonstrated.
Path integrals for particles in curved spaces can be used to compute trace anomalies in quantum field theories, and more generally to study properties of quantum fields coupled to gravity in first quantization. While their construction in arbitrary coordinates is well understood, and known to require the use of a regularization scheme, in this article we take up an old proposal of constructing the path integral by using Riemann normal coordinates. The method assumes that curvature effects are taken care of by a scalar effective potential, so that the particle lagrangian is reduced to that of a…
Ambiguities arising in different approaches (canonical, quasiclassical, path integration) to quantization are discussed by an example of the mechanics of a point-like particle in the Riemannian space (the geodesic dynamics). A way to select a single rule of quantization is proposed by requirement of a consistency of the quantum mechanics' following from the canonical and quasiclassical approaches. This rule selects also a definition of the path integration. A geometric interpretation of the noncovariance of the canonical Hamilton operator of a particle with respect to the diffeomorphisms of th…
The phenomenology of quantum systems in curved space-times is among the most fascinating fields of physics, allowing --often at the gedankenexperiment level-- constraints on tentative theories of quantum gravity. Determining the dynamics of fields in curved backgrounds remains however a complicated task because of the highly intricate partial differential equations involved, especially when the space metric exhibits no symmetry. In this article, we provide --in a pedagogical way-- a general formalism to determine this dynamics at the semiclassical order. To this purpose, a generic expression f…
The appearance of a geometric flow in the conservation law of particle number in classical particle diffusion and in the conservation law of probability in quantum mechanics is discussed in the geometrical environment of a two-dimensional curved surface with thickness $ε$ embedded in $R_3$. In such a system with a small thickness $ε$, the usual two-dimensional conservation law does not hold and we find an anomaly. The anomalous term is obtained by the expansion of $ε$. We find that this term has a Gaussian and mean curvature dependence and can be written as the total divergence of some geometr…
The concept of minimum length, widely accepted as a low-energy effect of quantum gravity, manifests itself in quantum mechanics through generalized uncertainty principles. Curved momentum space, on the other hand, is at the heart of similar applications such as doubly special relativity. We introduce a duality between theories yielding generalized uncertainty principles and quantum mechanics on nontrivial momentum space. In particular, we find canonically conjugate variables which map the former into the latter. In that vein, we explicitly derive the vielbein corresponding to a generic general…
In this work we present a derivation of Dirac's equation in a curved space-time starting from a Weyl-invariant action principle in 4+K dimensions. The Weyl invariance of Dirac's equation (and of Quantum Mechanics in general) is made possible by observing that the difference between the Weyl and the Riemann scalar curvatures in a metric space is coincident with Bohm's Quantum potential. This circumstance allows a completely geometrical formulation of Quantum Mechanics, the Conformal Quantum Geometrodynamics (CQG), which was proved to be useful, for example, to clarify some aspects of the quantu…
It is shown that the transmission line technology can be suitably used for simulating quantum mechanics. Using manageable and at the same time non-expensive technology, several quantum mechanical problems can be simulated for significant tutorial purposes. The electric signal envelope propagation through the line is governed by a Schrodinger-like equation for a complex function, representing the low-frequency component of the signal, In this preliminary analysis, we consider two classical examples, i.e. the Frank-Condon principle and the Ramsauer effect.
Many phenomena and fundamental predictions, ranging from Hawking radiation to the early evolution of the Universe rely on the interplay between quantum mechanics and gravity or more generally, quantum mechanics in curved spacetimes. However, our understanding is hindered by the lack of experiments that actually allow us to probe quantum mechanics in curved spacetime in a repeatable and accessible way. Here we propose an experimental scheme for a photon that is prepared in a path superposition state across two rotating Sagnac interferometers that have different diameters and thus represent a su…
Recently, Bennett et al. [Eur. J. Phys. 37:014001, 2016] presented a physically-motivated and explicitly gauge-independent scheme for the quantisation of the electromagnetic field in flat Minkowski space. In this paper we generalise this field quantisation scheme to curved spacetimes. Working within the standard assumptions of quantum field theory and only postulating the physicality of the photon, we derive the Hamiltonian, H, and the electric and magnetic field observables, E and B, without having to invoke a specific gauge. As an example, we quantise the electromagnetic field in the spaceti…
The full spectrum and eigenfunctions of the quantum version of a nonlinear oscillator defined on an N-dimensional space with nonconstant curvature are rigorously found. Since the underlying curved space generates a position-dependent kinetic energy, three different quantization prescriptions are worked out by imposing that the maximal superintegrability of the system has to be preserved after quantization. The relationships among these three Schroedinger problems are described in detail through appropriate similarity transformations. These three approaches are used to illustrate different feat…
The source-free Maxwell action is invariant under electric-magnetic duality rotations in arbitrary spacetimes. This leads to a conserved classical Noether charge. We show that this conservation law is broken at the quantum level in presence of a background classical gravitational field with a non-trivial Chern-Pontryagin invariant, in a parallel way to the chiral anomaly for massless Dirac fermions. Among the physical consequences, the net polarization of the quantum electromagnetic field is not conserved.
This work has the purpose of applying the concept of Geometric Calculus (Clifford Algebras) to the Fibre Bundle description of Quantum Mechanics. Thus, it is intended to generalize that formulation to curved spacetimes [the base space of the fibre bundle in question] in a more natural way.
The causal stochastic interpretation of relativistic quantum mechanics has the problems of superluminal velocities, motion backward in time and the incorrect non-relativistic limit. In this paper, according to the original ideas of de Broglie, Bohm and Takabayasi, we have introduced simultaneous quantum mass and quantum metric of curved spacetime to obtain a correct relativistic theory free of mentioned problems. \keywords{Bohmian mechanics; Klein-Gordon equation; quantum conformal transformations.
