We give an effective method for controlling the maximum number of limit cycles of some planar polynomial systems. It is based on a suitable choice of a Dulac function and the application of the well-known Bendixson-Dulac Criterion for multiple connected regions. The key point is a new approach to control the sign of the functions involved in the criterion. The method is applied to several examples.
In this paper we give sufficient conditions to ensure uniqueness of limit cycles for a class of planar vector fields. We also exhibit a class of examples with exactly one limit cycle.
We consider double canard cycles including two canards in singularly perturbed planar systems with two canard points. Previous work studied the complex oscillations including relaxation oscillations and canard cycles in singularly perturbed planar systems with one-parameter layer equations, which have precisely one canard point, two jump points or one canard point and one jump point. Based on the normal form theory, blow-up technique and Melnikov theory, we investigate double canard cycles induced by two Hopf breaking mechanisms at two non-degenerate canard points. Finally, we apply the obtain…
By applying a singular perturbation approach, canard limit cycles exhibited by a general family of singularly perturbed planar piecewise linear (PWL) differential systems are analyzed. The performed study involves both hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic canard limit cycles appearing after both a supercritical and a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The obtained results are completely comparable with those obtained for smooth vector fields. In some sense, the manuscript can be understood as an extension towards the PWL framework of the results obtained for smooth systems by Krupa and Szmolyan [18]. In a…
The paper deals with planar polynomial vector fields. We aim to estimate the number of orbital topological equivalence classes for the fields of degree n. An evident obstacle for this is the second part of Hilbert's 16th problem. To circumvent this obstacle we introduce the notion of equivalence modulo limit cycles. This paper is the continuation of the author's paper in [Mosc. Math. J. 1 (2001), no. 4] where the lower bound of the form 2^{cn^2} has been obtained. Here we obtain the upper bound of the same form. We also associate an equipped planar graph to every planar polynomial vector field…
We prove that every heteroclinic saddle loop (a two-saddle cycle) occurring in an analytic finite-parameter family of plane analytic vector fields, may generate no more than a finite number of limit cycles within the family.
In this paper, we study the existence of limit cycles in continuous and discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential systems with two or three zones separated by straight lines and such that the linear systems that define the piecewise one have isolated singular points, i.e. centers or saddles. In this case, we show that if the planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system is either continuous or discontinuous with two zones, then it has no limit cycles. Now, if the planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system is discontinuous with three zones, then it ha…
These last years an increasing interest appeared for studying the planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems motivated by the rich applications in modelling real phenomena. One of the difficulties for understanding the dynamics of these systems is the study their limit cycles. In this paper we study the maximum number of crossing limit cycles of some classes of planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems separated by a straight line, and formed by combinations of linear centers (consequently isochronous) and cubic isochronous centers with homogeneous nonlinearities. For these …
We find an upper bound to the maximal number of limit cycles, which bifurcate from a hamiltonian two-saddle loop of an analytic vector field, under an analytic deformation.
This paper deals with the problem of location and existence of limit cycles for real planar polynomial differential systems. We provide a method to construct Poincaré--Bendixson regions by using transversal curves, that enables us to prove the existence of a limit cycle that has been numerically detected. We apply our results to several known systems, like the Brusselator one or some Liénard systems, to prove the existence of the limit cycles and to locate them very precisely in the phase space. Our method, combined with some other classical tools can be applied to obtain sharp bounds for the …
We discuss the method of folding for discrete planar systems and use it to establish the existence or non-existence of cycles or chaos in planar systems of rational difference equations with variable coefficients. These include some systems that converge to autonomous systems and some that do not; e.g., systems with periodic coefficients.
We show that for any finite configuration of closed curves $Γ\subset \mathbb{R}^2$, one can construct an explicit planar polynomial vector field that realizes $Γ$, up to homeomorphism, as the set of its limit cycles with prescribed periods, multiplicities and stabilities. The only obstruction given on this data is the obvious compatibility relation between the stabilities and the parity of the multiplicities. The constructed vector fields are Darboux integrable and admit a polynomial inverse integrating factor.
In this paper, we apply the averaging method via Brouwer degree in a class of planar systems given by a linear center perturbed by a sum of continuous homogeneous vector fields, to study lower bounds for their number of limit cycles. Our results can be applied to models where the smoothness is lost on the set $Σ=\{xy=0\}$. We also apply them to present a variant of Hilbert 16th problem, where the goal is to bound the number of limit cycles in terms of the number of monomials of a family of polynomial vector fields, instead of doing this in terms of their degrees.
In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles that can bifurcating from a periodic annulus in discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system with three zones separated by two parallel straight lines. We prove that if the central subsystem, i.e. the system defined between the two parallel lines, has a real center and the others subsystems have centers or saddles, then we have at least three limit cycles that appear after perturbations of periodic annulus. For this, we study the number of zeros of a Melnikov function for piecewise Hamiltonian system and present a norm…
We consider the simplest model of a passive biped walking down a slope given by the equations of switched coupled pendula (McGeer, 1990). Following the fundamental work by Garcia et al (1998), we view the slope of the ground as a small parameter $γ\ge 0$. When $γ=0$ the system can be solved in closed form and the existence of a family of limit cycles (i.e. potential walking cycles) can be established explicitly. As observed in Garcia et al (1998), the family of limit cycles disappears when $γ$ increases and only isolated asymptotically stable cycles (walking cycles) persist. However, no rigoro…
We study the existence of periodic solutions in a class of planar Filippov systems obtained from non-autonomous periodic perturbations of reversible piecewise smooth differential systems. It is assumed that the unperturbed system presents a simple two-fold cycle, which is characterized by a closed trajectory connecting a visible two-fold singularity to itself. It is shown that under certain generic conditions the perturbed system has sliding and crossing periodic solutions. In order to get our results, Melnikov's ideas were applied together with tools from the geometric singular perturbation t…
In the present study we consider planar piecewise linear vector fields with two zones separated by the straight line $x=0$. Our goal is to study the existence of simultaneous crossing and sliding limit cycles for such a class of vector fields. First, we provide a canonical form for these systems assuming that each linear system has center, a real one for $y<0$ and a virtual one for $y>0$, and such that the real center is a global center. Then, working with a first order piecewise linear perturbation we obtain piecewise linear differential systems with three crossing limit cycles. Second, we se…
We consider a switched system of two subsystems that are activated as the trajectory enters the regions $\{(x,y):x>\bar x\}$ and $\{(x,y):x<-\bar x\}$ respectively, where $\bar x$ is a positive parameter. We prove that a regular asymptotically stable equilibrium of the associated Filippov equation of sliding motion (corresponding to $\bar x=0$) yields an orbitally stable limit cycle for all $\bar x>0$ sufficiently small. The research is motivated by an application to a dc-dc power converter, where $\bar x>0$ is used in place of $\bar x=0$ to avoid sliding motions.
A rigorous proof of a theorem on the coexistence of smooth Lyapunov function and smooth planar dynamical system with one arbitrary limit cycle is given, combining with a novel decomposition of the dynamical system from the perspective of mechanics. We base on this dynamic structure incorporating several efforts of this dynamic structure on fixed points, limit cycles and chaos, as well as on relevant known results, such as Schoenflies theorem, Riemann mapping theorem, boundary correspondence theorem and differential geometry theory, to prove this coexistence. We divide our procedure into three …
Planar piecewise linear systems with two linearity zones separated by a straight line and with a periodic orbit at infinity are considered. By using some changes of variables and parameters, a reduced canonical form with five parameters is obtained. Instead of the usual Bendixson transformation to work near infinity, a more direct approach is introduced by taking suitable coordinates for the crossing points of the possible periodic orbits with the separation straight line. The required computations to characterize the stability and bifurcations of the periodic orbit at infinity are much easier…
The existence of a uniform upper bound for the maximum number of limit cycles of planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by a straight line has been subject of interest of hundreds of papers. After more than 30 years of investigation since Lum-Chua's work, it has remained an open question whether this uniform upper bound exists or not. Here, we give a positive answer for this question by establishing the existence of a natural number $L^*\leq 8$ for which any planar piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by a straight line has no more than $…
I discuss some recent work linking certain aspects of the second part of Hilbert's 16th problem to the theory of \hbox{o-minimality}. These notes are adapted from a lecture I gave in the Jour fixe seminar series at the Zukunfts\-kolleg of Universität Konstanz in June 2017.
In this paper we show how we can transform quadratic systems into new quadratic systems after some kind of birational transformations, the quadratic plane Cremona maps. We afterwards apply these transformations to the families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle. As a consequence, we provide a new family of quadratic systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree 5. Moreover we show how the known families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree greater than four are obtained using these transformations. We also provide the ph…
We use blowup to study the regularization of codimension one two-fold singularities in planar piecewise smooth (PWS) dynamical systems. We focus on singular canards, pseudo-equlibria and limit cycles that can occur in the PWS system. Using the regularization of Sotomayor and Teixeira \cite{Sotomayor96}, we show rigorously how singular canards can persist and how the bifurcation of pseudo-equilibria is related to bifurcations of equilibria in the regularized system. We also show that PWS limit cycles are connected to Hopf bifurcations of the regularization. In addition, we show how regularizati…
Our concern is the study of degenerate Hopf bifurcation of smooth planar dynamical systems near isolated singular points. To do so, we propose to split up the definition of degeneracy into two types. Degeneracy of first kind shall means that no limit cycle surrounding the steady state can emerge after or before the critical point, with the possible emergence of limit cycles surrounding the point at infinity. Degeneracy of second kind shall means that either several limit cycles or semistable cycles as a limiting case, emerge surrounding the steady state super or subcritically. In degenerate bi…
This paper deals with the problem of location and existence of limit cycles for real planar polynomial differential systems. We provide a method to construct Poincaré--Bendixson regions by using transversal conics. We present several examples of known systems in the literature showing different features about limit cycles: hyperbolicity, Hopf bifurcation, sky-blue bifurcation, rotated vector fields, \ldots for which the obtained Poincaré--Bendixson region allows to locate the limit cycles. Our method gives bounds for the bifurcation values of parametrical families of planar vector fields and i…
