It is known that the energy of a weak solution to the Euler equation is conserved if it is slightly more regular than the Besov space $B^{1/3}_{3,\infty}$. When the singular set of the solution is (or belongs to) a smooth manifold, we derive various $L^p$-space regularity criteria dimensionally equivalent to the critical one. In particular, if the singular set is a hypersurface the energy of $u$ is conserved provided the one sided non-tangential limits to the surface exist and the non-tangential maximal function is $L^3$ integrable, while the maximal function of the pressure is $L^{3/2}$ integrable. The results directly apply to prove energy conservation of the classical vortex sheets in both 2D and 3D at least in those cases where the energy is finite.
Singular vorticty solutions of the incompressible 3D-Euler equation are constructed which satisfy the BKM criterion (cf. [2]). The construction is done by inviscid limits of vorticity solutions of transformed incompressible Navier Stokes type equations with a damping potential term, where the latter equations admit a global regular solution for positive viscosity. The inviscid limit vorticity solution of the incompressible Euler vorticity equation becomes singular at a point of the boundary of a finite domain.
We study singular limit for scaled barotropic Euler system modelling a rotating, compressible and inviscid fluid, where Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter $ε$. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab, the limit behaviour is identified as a horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid system that is analogous to the Euler system. We consider a very general class of solutions, named dissipative solution for the scaled compressible Euler systems and will show that it converges to a strong solution of that incompressible inviscid system.
We consider inviscid flow with isentropic coefficient greater than one. For flow along smooth infinite protruding corners we attempt to impose a nonzero limit for velocity at infinity at the upstream wall. We prove that the problem does not have any irrotational uniformly subsonic solutions, whereas rotational flows do exist. This can be considered a case of a slip-condition solid "generating" vorticity in inviscid flow.
We give an elementary proof of sharp decay rates and the linear inviscid damping near monotone shear flow in a periodic channel, first obtained in [14]. We shall also obtain the precise asymptotics of the solutions, measured in the space $L^{\infty}$.
In a recent paper, the authors investigated the controllability of an underwater vehicle immersed in an infinite volume of an inviscid fluid, assuming that the flow was irrotational. The aim of the present paper is to pursue this study by considering the more general case of a flow with vorticity. It is shown here that the local controllability of the position and the velocity of the underwater vehicle (a vector in R 12) holds in a flow with vorticity whenever it holds in a flow without vorticity.
In this paper, we prove the decay estimates of the velocity and $H^1$ scattering for the 2D linearized Euler equations around a class of monotone shear flow in a finite channel. Our result is consistent with the decay rate predicted by Case in 1960.
We consider the inviscid unsteady Prandtl system in two dimensions, motivated by the fact that it should model to leading order separation and singularity formation for the original viscous system. We give a sharp expression for the maximal time of existence of regular solutions, showing that singularities only happen at the boundary or on the set of zero vorticity, and that they correspond to boundary layer separation. We then exhibit new Lagrangian formulae for backward self-similar profiles, and study them also with a different approach that was initiated by Elliott-Smith-Cowley and Cassel-…
We deal with the local well-posedness theory for the two-dimensional inviscid Boussinesq system with rough initial data of Yudovich type. The problem is in some sense critical due to some terms involving Riesz transforms in the vorticity-density formulation. We give a positive answer for a special sub-class of Yudovich data including smooth and singular vortex patches. For the latter case we assume in addition that the initial density is constant around the singular part of the patch boundary.
We consider the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the singular regime of small Mach and large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, with ill prepared initial data on an unbounded domain in the three dimensional Euclidean space with a compact boundary. We perform the singular limit in the framework of weak solutions and identify the Euler-Boussinesq system as the target problem.
We prove linear inviscid damping near a general class of monotone shear flows in a finite channel, in Gevrey spaces. It is an essential step towards proving nonlinear inviscid damping for general shear flows that are not close to the Couette flow, which is a major open problem in 2d Euler equations.
In this note we establish a density result for certain stationary shear flows, $μ(y)$, that vanish at the boundaries of a horizontal channel. We construct stationary solutions to 2D Navier-Stokes that are $ε$-close in $L^\infty$ to the given shear flow. Our construction is based on a coercivity estimate for the Rayleigh operator, $R[v]$, which is based on a decomposition made possible by the vanishing of $μ$ at the boundaries.
In this paper, we prove the leading term of time-asymptotics of the moving vacuum boundary for compressible inviscid flows with damping to be that for Barenblatt self-similar solutions to the corresponding porous media equations obtained by simplifying momentum equations via Darcy's law plus the possible shift due to the movement of the center of mass, in the one-dimensional and three-dimensional spherically symmetric motions, respectively. This gives a complete description of the large time asymptotic behavior of solutions to the corresponding vacuum free boundary problems. The results obtain…
We consider solutions of the 2-d compressible Euler equations that are steady and self-similar. They arise naturally at interaction points in genuinely multi-dimensional flow. We characterize the possible solutions in the class of flows L^\infty-close to a constant supersonic background. As a special case we prove that solutions of 1-d Riemann problems are unique in the class of small L^\infty functions. We also show that solutions of the backward-in-time Riemann problem are necessarily BV.
In this paper, we prove the linear inviscid damping and voticity depletion phenomena for the linearized Euler equations around the Kolmogorov flow. These results confirm Bouchet and Morita's predictions based on numerical analysis. By using the wave operator method introduced by Li, Wei and Zhang, we solve Beck and Wayne's conjecture on the optimal enhanced dissipation rate for the 2-D linearized Navier-Stokes equations around the bar state called Kolmogorov flow. The same dissipation rate is proved for the Navier-Stokes equations if the initial velocity is included in a basin of attraction of…
We prove nonlinear asymptotic stability of a large class of monotonic shear flows among solutions of the 2D Euler equations in the channel $\mathbb{T}\times[0,1]$. More precisely, we consider shear flows $(b(y),0)$ given by a function $b$ which is Gevrey smooth, strictly increasing, and linear outside a compact subset of the interval $(0,1)$ (to avoid boundary contributions which are incompatible with inviscid damping). We also assume that the associated linearized operator satisfies a suitable spectral condition, which is needed to prove linear inviscid damping. Under these assumptions, we sh…
We obtain the local existence and uniqueness for a system describing interaction of an incompressible inviscid fluid, modeled by the Euler equations, and an elastic plate, represented by the fourth-order hyperbolic PDE. We provide a~priori estimates for the existence with the optimal regularity $H^{r}$, for $r>2.5$, on the fluid initial data and construct a unique solution of the system for initial data $u_0\in H^{r}$ for $r\geq3$. An important feature of the existence theorem is that the Taylor-Rayleigh instability does not occur.
In this paper, we prove the linear damping for the 2-D Euler equations around a class of shear flows under the assumption that the linearized operator has no embedding eigenvalues. For the symmetric flows, we obtain the explicit decay estimates of the velocity, which is the same as one for monotone shear flows. We confirm a new dynamical phenomena found by Bouchet and Morita: the depletion of the vorticity at the stationary streamlines, which could be viewed as a new mechanism leading to the damping for the base flows with stationary streamlines.
In this paper, we investigate the controllability of an underwater vehicle immersed in an infinite volume of an inviscid fluid whose flow is assumed to be irrotational. Taking as control input the flow of the fluid through a part of the boundary of the rigid body, we obtain a finite-dimensional system similar to Kirchhoff laws in which the control input appears through both linear terms (with time derivative) and bilinear terms. Applying Coron's return method, we establish some local controllability results for the position and velocities of the underwater vehicle. Examples with six, four, or …
In [1], T. Clopeau, A. Mikelić, and R. Robert studied the inviscid limit of the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain subject to Navier friction-type boundary conditions. They proved that the inviscid limit satisfies the incompressible Euler equations and their result ultimately includes flows generated by bounded initial vorticities. Our purpose in this article is to adapt and, to some extent, simplify their argument in order to include $p$-th power integrable initial vorticities, with $p>2$. In this note we revisit the proof of Bedrossian and Masmoudi [arXiv:1306.5028] about the inviscid damping of planar shear flows in the 2D Euler equations under the assumption of zero mean perturbation. We prove that a small perturbation to the 2D Euler Couette flow in $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$ strongly converge to zero, under the additional assumption that the average in $x$ is always zero. In general the mean is not a conserved quantity for the nonlinear dynamics, for this reason this is a particular case. Nevertheless our assumption allow the presence of echoes in the problem, which we c…
For a free surface problem of a highly subsonic heat-conducting inviscid flow, motivated by a geometric approach developed by Christodoulou and Lindblad in the study of the free surface problem of incompressible inviscid flows, the a priori estimates of Sobolev norms in 2-D and 3-D are proved under the Taylor sign condition by identifying a suitable higher order energy functional. The estimates for some geometric quantities such as the second fundamental form and the injectivity radius of the normal exponential map of the free surface are also given. The novelty in our analysis includes dealin…
We prove non-existence of nontrivial uniformly subsonic inviscid irrotational flows around several classes of solid bodies with two protruding corners, in particular vertical and angled flat plates; horizontal plates are the only case where solutions exists. This fills the gap between classical results on bodies with a single protruding corner on one hand and recent work on bodies with three or more protruding corners. Thus even with zero viscosity and slip boundary conditions solids can generate vorticity, in the sense of having at least one rotational but no irrotational solutions. Our obser…
We establish various criteria, which are known in the incompressible case, for the validity of the inviscid limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes flows considered in a general domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with or without a boundary. In the presence of a boundary, a generalized Navier boundary condition for velocity is assumed, which in particular by convention includes the classical no-slip boundary conditions. In this general setting we extend the Kato criteria and show the convergence to a solution which is dissipative "up to the boundary". In the case of smooth solutions, the convergence…
A semi-explicit formula of solution to the boundary layer system for thermal layer derived from the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the non-slip boundary condition when the viscosity coefficients vanish is given, in particular in three space dimension. In contrast to the inviscid Prandtl system studied by [7] in two space dimension, the main difficulty comes from the coupling of the velocity field and the temperature field through a degenerate parabolic equation. The convergence of these boundary layer equations to the inviscid Prandtl system is justified when the initial temperature…
We are concerned with the vortex sheet solutions for the inviscid two-phase flow in two dimensions. In particular, the nonlinear stability and existence of compressible vortex sheet solutions under small perturbations are established by using a modification of the Nash-Moser iteration technique, where a priori estimates for the linearized equations have a loss of derivatives. Due to the jump of the normal derivatives of densities of liquid and gas, we obtain the normal estimates in the anisotropic Sobolev space, instead of the usual Sobolev space. New ideas and techniques are developed to clos…
First, we consider Kolmogorov flow (a shear flow with a sinusoidal velocity profile) for 2D Navier-Stokes equation on a torus. Such flows, also called bar states, have been numerically observed as one type of metastable states in the study of 2D turbulence. For both rectangular and square tori, we prove that the non-shear part of perturbations near Kolmogorov flow decays in a time scale much shorter than the viscous time scale. The results are obtained for both the linearized NS equations with any initial vorticity in L^2, and the nonlinear NS equation with initial L^2 norm of vorticity of the…
The validity of the vanishing viscosity limit, that is, whether solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations modeling viscous incompressible flows converge to solutions of the Euler equations modeling inviscid incompressible flows as viscosity approaches zero, is one of the most fundamental issues in mathematical fluid mechanics. The problem is classified into two categories: the case when the physical boundary is absent, and the case when the physical boundary is present and the effect of the boundary layer becomes significant. The aim of this article is to review recent progress on the mathemati…
We consider the family known as modified or generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations (mSQG) consisting of the classical inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation together with a family of regularized active scalars given by introducing a smoothing operator of nonzero but possibly arbitrarily small degree. This family naturally interpolates between the 2D Euler equation and the SQG equation. For this family of equations we construct an invariant measure on a rough $L^2$-based Sobolev space and establish the existence of solutions of arbitrarily large lifespan for initial data in …
We consider the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the singular limit for the small Mach and large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, with ill prepared initial data on the three dimensional Euclidean space. The Euler-Boussinesq approximation is identified as the limit system.
We study the limiting behavior of the two-dimensional singular stochastic stochastic cubic nonlinear complex Ginzburg-Landau with Gibbs measure initial data. We show that in the appropriate small viscosity and small noise regimes, the limiting dynamics is given by the deterministic cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation at Gibbs equilibrium. In order to obtain this convergence, our approach combines both heat and Schrödinger analysis, within the framework of the Fourier restriction norm method of Bourgain (1993).
We reformulate the Generalized Proudman--Johnson (GPJ) equation with parameter a in Lagrangian variables, where it takes the form of an inhomogeneous Liouville equation. This allows us to provide an explicitformula for the flow map, up to the solution of an ODE. Depending on the parameter a, we prove new criteria for global existence or formation of a finite-time singularity. In particular, we show that there exist smooth initial data which become singular in finite time for a > 1. Also, we give a physical derivation of the GPJ equation for general parameter values of a.
In the present paper, we prove the a priori estimates of Sobolev norms for a free boundary problem of the incompressible inviscid MHD equations in all physical spatial dimensions $n=2$ and 3 by adopting a geometrical point of view used in Christodoulou-Lindblad CPAM 2000, and estimating quantities such as the second fundamental form and the velocity of the free surface. We identify the well-posedness condition that the outer normal derivative of the total pressure including the fluid and magnetic pressures is negative on the free boundary, which is similar to the physical condition (Taylor sig…
We prove the existence of steady \emph{space quasi-periodic} stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel ${\mathbb R}\times [-1,1]$. These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions slightly deforming the linear solutions and reta…
Bedrossian and Masmoudi (2015) showed nonlinear stability of 2D inviscid parallel shear flows in the infinite stripe $(\mathbb{R}/2\mathbb{Z})\times\mathbb{R}$. Inspired by their result, combining a diffeomorphism group result by Misiołek (1993), in this paper we give a lower bound of perturbations in 2D inviscid shear flow in a periodic box.
In this paper, we study the linear inviscid damping for the linearized $β$-plane equation around shear flows. We develop a new method to give the explicit decay rate of the velocity for a class of monotone shear flows. This method is based on the space-time estimate and the vector field method in sprit of the wave equation. For general shear flows including the Sinus flow, we also prove the linear damping by establishing the limiting absorption principle, which is based on the compactness method introduced by Wei-Zhang-Zhao in \cite{WZZ2}. The main difficulty is that the Rayleigh-Kuo equation …
Inspired by the recently published paper \cite{Hassainia-Hmidi}, the current paper investigates the local well-posedness for the generalized $2d-$Boussinesq system in the setting of regular/singular vortex patch. Under the condition that the initial vorticity $ω_{0}={\bf 1}_{D_0}$, with $\partial D_0$ is a Jordan curve with a Hölder regularity $C^{1+\EE},\;0<\EE<1$ and the density is a smooth function, we show that the velocity vector field is locally well-posed and we also establish local-in-time regularity persistence of the advected patch. Although, in the case of the singular patch, the an…
We consider the convergence in the $L^2$ norm, uniformly in time, of the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions to the Euler equations with slip boundary conditions. We prove that if the Oleinik conditions of no back-flow in the trace of the Euler flow, and of a lower bound for the Navier-Stokes vorticity is assumed in a Kato-like boundary layer, then the inviscid limit holds.
In this paper, we investigate the singularity near the degenerate points of the steady axisymmetric flow with general vorticity of an inviscid incompressible fluid acted on by gravity and with a free surface. We called the points on the free boundary at which the gradient of the stream function vanishes as the degenerate points. The main results in this paper give the different classifications of the singularity near the degenerate points on the free surface. More precisely, we obtained that at the stagnation points, the possible profiles must be a Stokes corner, or a horizontal cusp, or a hor…
We study the inviscid limit problem of the incompressible flows in the presence of both impermeable regular boundaries and a hypersurface transversal to the boundary across which the inviscid flow has a discontinuity jump. In the former case, boundary layers have been introduced by Prandtl as correctors near the boundary between the inviscid and viscous flows. In the latter case, the viscosity smoothes out the discontinuity jump by creating a transition layer which has the same amplitude and thickness as the Prandtl layer. In the neighborhood of the intersection of the impermeable boundary and…
We prove the asymptotic stability of shear flows close to the Couette flow for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, if the initial velocity is close to the Couette flow and the initial density is close to a positive constant in the Gevrey class 2, then 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations are globally well-posed and the velocity converges strongly to a shear flow close to the Couette flow, and the vorticity will be driven to small scales by a linear evolution and weakly converges as $t\to \infty$. To our knowledge, t…
This paper addresses the weak-strong uniqueness property and singular limit for the compressible Primitive Equations (PE). We show that a weak solution coincides with the strong solution emanating from the same initial data. On the other hand, we prove compressible PE will approach the incompressible inviscid PE equations in the regime of low Mach number and large Reynolds number in the case of well-prepared initial data. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first work to bridge the link between the compressible PE with incompressible inviscid PE.
We study the 2D Navier-Stokes equations linearized around the Couette flow $(y,0)^t$ in the periodic channel $\mathbb T \times [-1,1]$ with no-slip boundary conditions in the vanishing viscosity $ν\to 0$ limit. We split the vorticity evolution into the free evolution (without a boundary) and a boundary corrector that is exponentially localized to at most an $O(ν^{1/3})$ boundary layer. If the initial vorticity perturbation is supported away from the boundary, we show inviscid damping of both the velocity and the vorticity associated to the boundary layer. For example, our $L^2_t L^1_y$ estimat…
We show that certain singular structures (Hölderian cusps and mild divergences) are transported by the flow of homeomorphisms generated by an Osgood velocity field. The structure of these singularities is related to the modulus of continuity of the velocity and the results are shown to be sharp in the sense that slightly more singular structures cannot generally be propagated. For the 2D Euler equation, we prove that certain singular structures are preserved by the motion, e.g. a system of $\log\log_+(1/|x|)$ vortices (and those that are slightly less singular) travel with the fluid in a nonli…
Consider inviscid fluids in a channel {-1<y<1}. For the Couette flow v_0=(y,0), the vertical velocity of solutions to the linearized Euler equation at v_0 decays in time. At the nonlinear level, such inviscid damping has not been proved. First, we show that in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow, there exist non-parallel steady flows with arbitrary minimal horizontal period. This implies that nonlinear inviscid damping is not true in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow and for any horizontal period. Indeed, the long time behavior in such neighbor…
We prove the existence of a subsonic weak solution $({\bf u}, ρ, p)$ to steady Euler system in a two-dimensional infinitely long nozzle when prescribing the value of the entropy $(= \frac{p}{ρ^γ})$ at the entrance by a piecewise $C^2$ function with a discontinuity at a point. Due to the variable entropy condition with a discontinuity at the entrance, the corresponding solution has a nonzero vorticity and contains a contact discontinuity $x_2=g_D(x_1)$. We construct such a solution via Helmholtz decomposition. The key step is to decompose the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions on the contact discontin…
