Pointwise modulus of continuity of the Lyapunov exponent and integrated density of states for analytic multi-frequency quasiperiodic $M(2, \mathbb{C})$ cocycles
We quantify the coupling asymptotics for the Lyapunov-exponent of a one-frequency quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator with analytic potential sampling function. The result refines the well-known lower bound of the Lyapunov-exponent by Sorets and Spencer.
We study the spectral transition line of the extended Harper's model in the positive Lyapunov exponent regime. We show that both pure point spectrum and purely singular continuous spectrum occur for dense subsets of frequencies on the transition line.
In some quasi-one-dimensional weakly disordered media, impurities are large and rare rather than small and dense. For an Anderson model with a low density of strong impurities, a perturbation theory in the impurity density is developed for the Lyapunov exponent and the density of states. The Lyapunov exponent grows linearly with the density. Anomalies of the Kappus-Wegner type appear for all rational quasi-momenta even in lowest order perturbation theory.
We study discontinuity of the Lyapunov exponent. We construct a limit-periodic Schrödinger operator, of which the Lyapunov exponent has a positive measure set of discontinuities. We also show that the limit-periodic potentials, whose Lyapunov exponent is discontinuous, are dense in the space of limit-periodic potentials.
The paper provides a new integral formula for the largest Lyapunov exponent of Gaussian matrices, which is valid in the real, complex and quaternion-valued cases. This formula is applied to derive asymptotic expressions for the largest Lyapunov exponent when the size of the matrix is large and compare the Lyapunov exponents in models with a spike and no spikes.
We prove two inequalities between the Lyapunov exponents of a diffeomorphism and its local recurrence properties. We give examples showing that each of the inequalities is optimal.
We show that the Poincaré return time of a typical cylinder is at least its length. For one dimensional maps we express the Lyapunov exponent and dimension via return times.
In this paper we study ergodic optimization problems for subadditive sequences of functions on a topological dynamical system. We prove that for $t\rightarrow \infty$ any accumulation point of a family of equilibrium states is a maximizing measure. We show that the Lyapunov exponent and entropy of equilibrium states converge in the limit $t\rightarrow \infty$ to the maximum Lyapunov exponent and entropy of maximizing measures. In the particular case of matrix cocycles we prove that the maximal Lyapunov exponent can be approximated by Lyapunov exponents of periodic trajectories under certain as…
We study regularity properties of the Lyapunov exponent L of quasiperiodic operators with analytic potential, under no assumptions on the Diophantine class of the frequency. We prove that L is jointly continuous, in frequency and energy, at every irrational frequency.
The Lyapunov exponent characterizes the asymptotic behavior of long matrix products. Recognizing scenarios where the Lyapunov exponent is strictly positive is a fundamental challenge that is relevant in many applications. In this work we establish a novel tool for this task by deriving a quantitative lower bound on the Lyapunov exponent in terms of a matrix sum which is efficiently computable in ergodic situations. Our approach combines two deep results from matrix analysis --- the $n$-matrix extension of the Golden-Thompson inequality and the Avalanche-Principle. We apply these bounds to the …
The exact value of the Lyapunov exponents for the random matrix product $P_N = A_N A_{N-1}...A_1$ with each $A_i = Σ^{1/2} G_i^{\rm c}$, where $Σ$ is a fixed $d \times d$ positive definite matrix and $G_i^{\rm c}$ a $d \times d$ complex Gaussian matrix with entries standard complex normals, are calculated. Also obtained is an exact expression for the sum of the Lyapunov exponents in both the complex and real cases, and the Lyapunov exponents for diffusing complex matrices.
We establish the existence, uniqueness, and stability of the stationary solution of the one-dimensional viscous Burgers equation with the Dirichlet boundary conditions on a finite interval. We obtain explicit formulas for solutions and analytically determine the Lyapunov exponents characterizing the asymptotic behavior of arbitrary solutions approaching the stationary one.
A variant of multiscale analysis for ergodic Schrödinger operators is developed. This enables us to prove positivity of Lyapunov exponents given initial scale estimates and an initial Wegner estimate. This is then applied to high dimensional skew-shifts at small coupling, where initial conditions are checked using the Pastur--Figotin formalism. Furthermore, it is shown that for potentials generated by the doubling map one has positive Lyapunov exponent except in a superpolynomially small set.
We study lower bounds on the Lyapunov exponent associated with one-frequency quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators with an added finite valued background potential. We prove that, for sufficiently large coupling constant, the Lyapunov exponent is positive with a uniform (in energy and background) minoration.
We provide an example of a Schrödinger cocycle over a mixing Markov shift for which the integrated density of states has a very weak modulus of continuity, close to the log-Hölder lower bound established by W. Craig and B. Simon. This model is based upon a classical example due to Y. Kifer of a random Bernoulli cocycle with zero Lyapunov exponents which is not strongly irreducible. It follows that the Lyapunov exponent of a Bernoulli cocycle near this Kifer example cannot be Hölder or weak-Hölder continuous, thus providing a limitation on the modulus of continuity of the Lyapunov exponent of r…
We analyze the top Lyapunov exponent of the product of sequences of two by two matrices that appears in the analysis of several statistical mechanics models with disorder: for example these matrices are the transfer matrices for the nearest neighbor Ising chain with random external field, and the free energy density of this Ising chain is the Lyapunov exponent we consider. We obtain the sharp behavior of this exponent in the large interaction limit when the external field is centered: this balanced case turns out to be critical in many respects. From a mathematical standpoint we precisely iden…
In this article we give a new definition of some analog of Lyapunov exponents for cellular automata . Then for a shift ergodic and cellular automaton invariant probability measure we establish an inequality between the entropy of the automaton, the entropy of the shift and the Lyapunov exponent.
We consider one-dimensional quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators with analytic potentials. In the positive Lyapunov exponent regime, we prove large deviation estimates which lead to optimal Hölder continuity of the Lyapunov exponents and the integrated density of states, in both small Lyapunov exponent and large coupling regimes. Our results cover all the Diophantine frequencies and some Liouville frequencies.
We construct discontinuous point of the Lyapunov exponent of quasiperiodic Schrödinger cocycles in the Gevrey space $G^{s}$ with $s>2$. In contrast, the Lyapunov exponent has been proved to be continuous in the Gevrey space $G^{s}$ with $s<2$ \cite{klein,cgyz}. This shows that $G^2$ is the transition space for the continuity of the Lyapunov exponent.
We point out that the Lyapunov exponent of the eigenstate places restrictions on the eigenvalue. Consequently, with regard to non-Hermitian systems, even without any symmetry, the non-conservative Hamiltonians can exhibit real spectra as long as Lyapunov exponents of eigenstates inhibit imaginary parts of eigenvalues. Our findings open up a new route to study non-Hermitian physics.
We provide an explicit lower bound for the the sum of the non-negative Lyapunov exponents for some cocycles related to the Anderson model. In particular, for the Anderson model on a strip of width $ W $ the lower bound is proportional to $ W^{-ε} $, for any $ ε>0 $. This bound is consistent with the fact that the lowest non-negative Lyapunov exponent is conjectured to have a lower bound proportional to $ W^{-1} $.
We shortly review the progress in the domain of deterministic chaos for quantum dynamical systems. With the appropriately extended definition of quantum Lyapunov exponent we analyze various quantum dynamical maps. It is argued that, within Quantum Mechanics, irregular evolution for properly chosen observables can coexist with regular and predictable evolution of states.
Lyapunov exponents describe the asymptotic behavior of the singular values of large products of random matrices. A direct computation of these exponents is however often infeasible. By establishing a link between Lyapunov exponents and an information theoretic tool called entropy accumulation theorem we derive an upper and a lower bound for the maximal and minimal Lyapunov exponent, respectively. The bounds assume independence of the random matrices, are analytical, and are tight in the commutative case as well as in other scenarios. They can be expressed in terms of an optimization problem th…
