Temperature dependent structural changes in a nearly pure monoclinic phase composition (x=0.525) of Pb(Zr_xTi_1-x)O_3 (PZT) have been investigated using Rietveld analysis of high-resolution synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction data and correlated with changes in the dielectric constant and planar electromechanical coupling coefficient. Our results show that the intrinsic piezoelectric response of the tetragonal phase of PZT is higher than that of the monoclinic phase. It is also shown that the high piezoelectric response of PZT may be linked with an anomalous softening of the elastic modulus (1/S_11) of the tetragonal compositions closest to the morphotropic phase boundary.
Raman spectra of PbZr1-xTixO3 ceramics with titanium concentration varying between 0.40 and 0.60 were measured at 7 K. By observing the concentration-frequency dependence of vibrational modes, we identified the boundaries among rhombohedral, monoclinic, and tetragonal ferroelectric phases. The analysis of the spectra was made in the view of theory group analysis making possible the assignment of some modes for the monoclinic phase.
The structural characteristics of the perovskite- based ferroelectric Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-9%PbTiO3 at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region (x≃0.09) have been analyzed. The analysis is based on the symmetry adapted free energy functions under the assumption that the total polarization and the unit cell volume are conserved during the transformations between various morphotropic phases. Overall features of the relationships between the observed lattice constants at various conditions have been consistently explained. The origin of the anomalous physical properties at MPB is discussed.
We used an optical reflection method to measure the temperature-dependence of the piezoelectricity, electrostriction and time constant of a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) thin film. We obtained the piezoelectric constant and the electrostrictive constant as a function of temperature by curve fitting the experimental data. We also obtained the time constant as a function of temperature and applied voltage. An abnormal behavior of the strain that was larger at 275 K than at 285 K was observed. This observation was also consistent with the minimal hysteresis behavior of the time constant at 27…
We report on the discovery of a lead-free morphotropic phase boundary in Sm doped BiFeO3 with a simple perovskite structure using the combinatorial thin film strategy. The boundary is a rhombohedral to pseudo-orthorhombic structural transition which exhibits a ferroelectric (FE) to antiferroelectric (AFE) transition at approximately Bi0.86Sm0.14FeO3 with dielectric constant and out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficient comparable to those of epitaxial (001) oriented Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) thin films at the MPB. The discovered composition may be a strong candidate of a Pb-free piezoelectric replacement…
The contributory mechanisms associated with high piezoelectric response in piezoelectric ceramics have been examined by in-situ electric field dependent high energy synchro x-ray diffraction study. A comparative study of electric field induced lattice strain and the propensity for non-180o domain switching on two closeby compositions of a high performance piezoelectric alloy (1-x)PbTiO3-(x)BiScO3, one within the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region exhibiting d33 of 425 pC/N and another just outside the MPB region exhibiting d33 of 260 pC/N, unravelled that, inspite of the MPB specimen exh…
In this work, we address the issue of peaking of piezoelectric response at a particular composition in the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region of (Pb0.940Sr0.06)(ZrxTi1-x)O3 (PSZT) piezoelectric ceramics. We present results of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, dielectric, piezoelectric and sound velocity studies to critically examine the applicability of various models for the peaking of physical properties. It is shown that the models based on the concepts of phase coexistence, polarization rotation due to monoclinic structure, tricritical point and temperature dependent softening of…
We report the finding of unusual scale-dependent symmetry below the ferroelectric Curie temperature in the perovskite Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 single crystals of morphotropic phase boundary compositions. The crystals of tetragonal symmetry (from x-ray diffraction experiments) on sub-micrometer scale exhibit a macroscopic (optically determined) cubic symmetry. This peculiar optical isotropy is explained by the anomalously small size of tetragonal ferroelectric domains. Upon further cooling the crystals transform to the phase consisting of micrometer-sized domains of monoclinic Cm symmetry.
The symmetry was examined using neutron diffraction method on Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 -9%PbTiO3 (PZN/9PT) which has a composition at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 and PbTiO3. The results were compared with those of other specimens with same composition but with different prehistory. The equilibrium state of all examined specimens is not the mixture of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases of the end members but exists in a new polarization rotation line Mc# (orthorhombic-monoclinic line). Among examined specimens, one exhibited tetragonal symmetry at room temperature but…
The origin of the very large piezoelectric response observed in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in perovskite lead zirconate titanate and related systems has been under intensive studies. Polarization rotation ideas are frequently invoked to explain the piezoelectric properties. It was recently reported that lead titanate undergoes a phase transformation sequence $P4mm\to Pm\to Cm\to R\bar{3}c$ at 10 K as a function of hydrostatic pressure [M. Ahart et al. Nature Letters. \textbf{451}, 545 (2008)]. We demonstrate that this interpretation is not correct by (i) simulating t…
Results of Rietveld analysis of the synchrotron XRD data on Pb(Zr_xTi_1-x)O_3 (PZT) for 0.525\leqx\leq0.60 are presented to show the absence of rhombohedral phase on the Zr-rich side of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Our results reveal that the structure of PZT is monoclinic in the Cm space group for 0.525\leq x\leq 0.60. The nature of the monoclinic distortion changes from pseudo-tetragonal for 0.525\leqx\leq0.54 to pseudo-rhombohedral for x>0.54.
Temperature-dependent dielectric permittivity of lead-free (LixNa1-x)NbO3 for nominal x = 0.04-0.20, prepared by solid state reaction followed by sintering, was studied to resolve often debated issue pertaining to exactness of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) location along with structural aspects and phase stability in the system near MPB. Interestingly, a diffuse phase transition has been observed in the dielectric permittivity peak arising from the disorder induced in A-site and structural frustration in the perovskite cell due to Li substitution. A partial phase diagram has been proposed …
Evidences of a monoclinic phase in unpoled (PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3)1-x-(PbTiO3)x with x=0.35 (PMN-PT 35%) and unpoled (PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3)1-x-(PbTiO3)x with x=0.09 (PZN-PT 9%) are presented from a neutron Rietveld analysis. This monoclinic phase is different from the phase recently evidenced by Noheda and coworkers in PbZr1-xTixO3 with x=0.481 but is identical to the phase observed in poled PZN-PT with x=0.102 by the same authors. The structural resolutions allowed us to compare both structures and to deduce the direction and magnitude of polarization. In PMN-PT 35% and PZN-PT 9% this phase is characteris…
Ceramic solid solutions of PbZr(1-x)TixO3 (PZT) with compositions of about x= 0.50 are well-known for their extraordinarily large piezoelectric responses. The latter are highly anisotropic, and it was recently shown that, for the rhombohedral compositions (x< 0.5), the piezoelectric coefficients were largest away from the polar direction, contrary to common belief. Shortly afterwards a low-symmetry monoclinic phase was observed by synchrotron x-ray diffraction at around x=0.50. Similar behavior and features are also present in a number of related lead-based strongly-piezoelectric single crysta…
We find an unexpected tetragonal-to-monoclinic-to-rhombohedral-to-cubic phase transition sequence induced by pressure, and a morphotropic phase boundary in a pure compound using first-principles calculations. Huge dielectric and piezoelectric coupling constants occur in the transition regions, comparable to those observed in the new complex single-crystal solid-solution piezoelectrics such as Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$-PbTiO$_{3}$, which are expected to revolutionize electromechanical applications. Our results show that morphotropic phase boundaries and giant piezoelectric effects do not …
In piezoelectric ceramics the changes in the phase stabilities versus stress and temperature in the vicinity of the phase boundary play a central role. The present study was dedicated to the classical piezoelectric, lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) ceramic with composition Pb(Zr$_{0.54}$Ti$_{0.46}$)O$_3$ at the Zr-rich side of the morphotropic phase boundary at which both intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to piezoelectricity are significant. The pressure-induced changes in this two-phase (rhombohedral $R3c$+monoclinic $Cm$ at room temperature and $R3c+P4mm$ above 1 GPa pressures) system were …
Piezoelectric PZT solid solutions were studied as a function of pressure and temperature. Moderate pressure is found to induce phase transitions to monoclinic phases (Cm,Cc) for Ti-rich PZT, which are the same ferroelectric phases responsible for the high piezoelectric properties of the MPB. The following transformation sequence P4mm -> Cm -> Cc -> F1 -> F-1 was identified upon increasing pressure. Compression behaviour is dominated by: (1) a rotation and a reduction of the spontaneouspolarization and (2) octahedral tilting leading to unit cell doubling. Future studies as a function of pressur…
We report on the evolution of the magnetic structure of BiFeO3 thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates as a function of Sm doping. We determined the magnetic structure using neutron diffraction. We found that as Sm increases, the magnetic structure evolves from a cycloid to a G-type antiferromagnet at the morphotropic phase boundary, where there is a large piezoelectric response due to an electric-field induced structural transition. The occurrence of the magnetic structural transition at the morphotropic phase boundary offers another route towards room temperature multiferroic devices.
We present an ab initio study of the BFCO solid solution formed by multiferroics BiFeO3 (BFO) and BiCoO3 (BCO). We find that BFCO presents a strongly discontinuous morphotropic transition between BFO-like and BCO-like ferroelectric phases. Further, for all compositions such phases remain (meta)stable and retain well-differentiated properties. Our results thus suggest that an electric field can be used to switch between these structures, and show that such a switching involves large phase-change effects of various types, including piezoelectric, electric, and magnetoelectric ones.
A first-principles-derived approach is used to study structural, piezoelectric and dielectric properties of Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_{x})O_{3} (PZT) solid solutions near the morphotropic phase boundary at low temperature. Three ferroelectric phases are found to exist: a tetragonal phase for larger x compositions, a rhombohedral phase for smaller x compositions, and the recently discovered monoclinic phase in between. In this monoclinic phase, the polarization associated with the Zr atoms behaves differently from the polarization associated with the Ti atoms. As the composition x decreases, the former rot…
Results presented in this article demonstrate importance of taking into account such a phenomenon as the solid solution decomposition at the boundaries separating coexisting phases in lead-zirconate-titanate-based solid solutions with compositions belonging to the morphotropic boundary region of the "temperature-composition" phase diagram. It is shown that in the local decomposition of solid solutions in the vicinity of the boundaries separating the tetragonal and rhombohedral phases in lead-zirconate-titanate-based solid solutions lead to the changes of the chemical composition of the solid s…
Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory and phase field modeling, we explore the complex interplay between the long-range structural order parameter (oxygen octahedron rotations) and polarization in EuxSr1-xTiO3 thin epitaxial films. In biaxially tensile strained films, we discover the presence of a low symmetry monoclinic phase with in-plane ferroelectric polarization that is stabilized by antiferrodistortive oxygen octahedra tilts. The monoclinic phase is stable in a wide temperature range, and is characterized by the large number of energetically equivalent polar and structural twin domains…
In this review we address some of the experimental challenges found in the x-ray diffraction characterization of the low-symmetry phases recently discovered in the PZT, PZN-PT and PMN-PT piezoelectric systems around their morphotropic phase boundaries. In particular, we discuss the need for special care in the preparation of powder samples made from single crystals in order to avoid degradation and peak-broadening effects.
A summary of the work recently carried out on the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of PZT is presented. By means of x-ray powder diffraction on ceramic samples of excellent quality, the MPB has been successfully characterized by changing temperature in a series of closely spaced compositions. As a result, an unexpected monoclinic phase has been found to exist in between the well-known tetragonal and rhombohedral PZT phases. A detailed structural analysis, together with the investigation of the field effect in this region of compositions, have led to an important advance in understanding the m…
High resolution x-ray powder diffraction measurements on poled PbZr(1-x)TixO3 (PZT) ceramic samples close to the rhombohedral-tetragonal phase boundary (the so-called morphotropic phase boundary, MPB) have shown that for both rhombohedral and tetragonal compositions, the piezoelectric elongation of the unit cell does not occur along the polar directions but along those directions associated with the monoclinic distortion. This work provides the first direct evidence for the origin of the very high piezoelectricity in PZT.
Solid solution BiFe1-xCoxO3 shows anti-ferromagnetic order and pyroelectric order, simultaneously. It has been known that BiFe1-xCoxO3 exhibits a structural phase transition between monoclinic and tetragonal phases as x increases. This kinds of transition is often called morphotoropic phase boundary, which is well known to take place in a representative piezoelectric oxide, PbZr1-xTixO3. In order to theoretically understand the piezoelectric property in BiFe1-xCoxO3, we performed ab-initio electronic-structure calculations and studied the structural stability, the magnetic property, and the el…
Neutron diffraction data obtained on single crystals of PbZr1-xTixO3 with x = 0.325 and x = 0.460, which lie on the pseudorhombohedral side of the morphotropic phase boundary, suggest a coexistence of rhombohedral (R3m/R3c) and monoclinic (Cm) domains and that monoclinic order is enhanced by Ti substitution. A monoclinic phase with a doubled unit cell (Cc) is ruled out as the ground state.
We observed that electric field induces phase transition from tetragonal to rhombohedral in polycrystalline morphotropic lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films, as reported in 2011 for bulk PZT. Moreover, we evidenced that this field-induced phase transition is strongly correlated with PZT film piezoelectric properties, that is to say the larger the phase transition, the larger the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient d 33,eff . Although d 33,eff is already comprised between as 150 to 170 pm/V, our observation suggests that one could obtain larger d 33,eff values, namely 250 pm/V, by optimizing…
Morphotropic phase boundaries (MPBs) show substantial piezoelectric and dielectric responses, which have practical applications. The predicted existence of MPB in HfO2-ZrO2 solid solution thin film has provided a new way to increase the dielectric properties of a silicon-compatible device. Here, we present a new fabrication design by which the density of MPB and consequently the dielectric constant of HfO2-ZrO2 thin film was considerably increased. The density of MPB was controlled by fabrication of a 10-nm [1 nm-Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (Ferroelectric)/1 nm-ZrO2 (Antiferroelectric)] nanolaminate followed…
Two-dimensional polarity is intriguing but remains in the early stage. Here a structural evolution diagram is established for GeS monolayer, which leads a noncollinear ferrielectric $δ$-phase energetically as stable as the ferroelectric $α$-phase. Its ferrielectricity is induced by the phonon frustration, i.e., the competition between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric modes, providing more routes to tune its polarity. Besides its prominent properties like large band gap, large polarization, and high Curie temperature, more interestingly, the morphotropic phase boundary between $α$- and $δ$-p…
Strong piezoelectricity in the perovskite-type PbZr(1-x)TixO3 (PZT) and Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PZN-PT) systems is generally associated with the existence of a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) separating regions with rhombohedral and tetragonal symmetry. An x-ray study of PZN-9%PT has revealed the presence of a new orthorhombic phase at the MPB, and a near-vertical boundary between the rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases, similar to that found for PZT between the rhombohedral and monoclinic phases. We discuss the results in the light of a recent theoretical paper by Vanderbilt and Cohen, wh…
A monoclinic phase was recently discovered near the morphotropic phase boundary in several high-performance piezoelectric perovskite solid solutions, but its properties have not been reported. In this paper the dielectric, piezo- and ferroelectric properties of the monoclinic Pm phase in the (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 -xPbTiO3 perovskite system are studied. In a (001)-oriented crystal of composition x=0.33, ferroelectric hysteresis loops with remanent polarization of 23 uC/cm^2 are displayed. In poled monoclinic crystals, under unipolar drive up to 10 kV/cm, the domain walls remain unchanged, the p…
For decades it has been a well-known fact that among the few ferroelectric compounds in the perovskite family namely BaTiO3, KNbO3, PbTiO3 Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3 the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of BaTiO3 is considerably higher than the others in polycrystalline form at room temperature. Further, similar to ferroelectric alloys exhibiting morphotropic phase boundary, single crystals of BaTiO3 exhibits anomalously large piezoelectric response when poled away from the direction of spontaneous polarization at room temperature. These anomalous features in BaTiO3 remained unexplained so far from…
Recently discovered fine structure of the morphotropic phase boundaries in highly piezoelectric mixture compounds PZT, PMN-PT, and PZN-PT demonstrates the importance of highly non-linear interactions in these systems. We show that an adequate Landau-type description of the ferroelectric phase transitions in these compounds is achieved by the use of a twelfth-order expansion of the Landau potential in terms of the phenomenological order parameter. Group-theoretical and catastrophe-theory methods are used in constructing the appropriate Landau potential. A complete phase diagram is calculated in…
We screen a large chemical space of perovskite alloys for systems with the right properties to accommodate a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in their composition-temperature phase diagram, a crucial feature for high piezoelectric performance. We start from alloy end-points previously identified in a high-throughput computational search. An interpolation scheme is used to estimate the relative energies between different perovskite distortions for alloy compositions with a minimum of computational effort. Suggested alloys are further screened for thermodynamic stability. The screening identifi…
We identify a first-order, isosymmetric transition between a ferrielectric (FiE) and ferroelectric (FE) state in $A$-site ordered LaScO$_{3}$/BiScO$_{3}$ and LaInO$_{3}$/BiInO$_{3}$ superlattices. Such a previously unreported ferroic transition is driven by the easy switching of cation displacements without changing the overall polarization direction or crystallographic symmetry. Epitaxial strains less than 2% are predicted to be sufficient to transverse the phase boundary, across which we capture a ~5X increase in electric polarization. In a fashion similar to classic Pb-based perovskite cera…
The importance of a high shear coefficient d15 (or d24) to the piezoelectric properties of domain-engineered and polycrystalline ferroelectrics is discussed. The extent of polarization rotation, as a mechanism of piezoelectric response, is directly correlated to the shear coefficient. The terms "rotator" and "extender" are introduced to distinguish the contrasting behaviors of crystals such as 4mm BaTiO3 and PbTiO3. In "rotator" ferroelectrics, where d15 is high relative to the longitudinal coefficient d33, polarization rotation is the dominant mechanism of piezoelectric response; the maximum …
Polymer-piezoceramic 0-3 composites combine the flexibility of the polymers and the excellent piezoelectric properties of the ferroelectric based ceramic. While grain size of the ceramic powder is one of the important considerations in the fabrication of such composites, a correlation relating poling field induced structural changes and its possible influence on the overall piezoelectric response of the composite is still lacking. In this paper, we examine this issue on a 0-3 piezo-composite comprising of a ceramic powders of a low-lead piezoelectric alloy (x)Bi(Ni1/2Zr1/2O3-(1-x)PbTiO3 in pro…
The results are presented of anelastic and dielectric spectroscopy measurements on large grain ceramic PZT with compositions near the two morphotropic phase boundaries (MPBs) that the ferroelectric (FE) rhombohedral phase has with the Zr-rich antiferroelectric and Ti-rich FE tetragonal phases. These results are discussed together with similar data from previous series of samples, and reveal new features of the phase diagram of PZT, mainly connected with octahedral tilting and its coupling with the polar modes. Additional evidence is provided of what we interpret as the onset of the tilt instab…
Piezoelectrics have long been studied using parameterized models fit to experimental data, starting with the work of Devonshire in 1954. Much has been learned using such approaches, but they can also miss major phenomena if the materials properties are not well under-stood, as is exemplified by the realization that low-symmetry monoclinic phases are common around morphotropic phase boundaries, which was missed completed by low-order Devonshire models, and can only appear in higher order models. In the last 15 years, a new approach has developed using first-principles computations, based on fun…
We report a first-principles study of a class of (BiScO3)_{1-x}-(PbTiO3)_x (BS-PT) alloys recently proposed by Eitel et al. as promising materials for piezoelectric actuator applications. We show that (i) BS-PT displays very large structural distortions and polarizations at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) (we obtain a c/a of ~1.05-1.08 and P_tet of ~1.1 C/m^2); (ii) the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of BS-PT are dominated by the onset of hybridization between Bi/Pb-6p and O-2p orbitals, a mechanism that is enhanced upon substitution of Pb by Bi; and (iii) the piezoelectric r…
A new lead-free (1-x)Li0.12Na0.88NbO3-xBaTiO3 (0 to x to 40) piezoelectric ceramics have been prepared using conventional ceramics processing route. Structural analysis revealed an existence of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), separating orthorhombic and tetragonal phases, between the BaTiO3 content, x = 10-12.5. A partial phase diagram has been established based on temperature-dependent permittivity data for this new system and a nearly vertical temperature-independent MPB is observed. An improvement in electrical properties near MPB (e.g., for x = 12.5; εr = 10489 at Tm, d33 = 30 pC/N, kp …
The structural evolution of the strain-driven morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in BiFeO3 films has been investigated using synchrotron x-ray diffractometry in conjunction with scanning probe microscopy. Our results demonstrate the existence of mixed-phase regions that are mainly made up of two heavily tilted ferroelectric triclinic phases. Analysis of first-principles computations suggests that these two triclinic phases originate from a phase separation of a single monoclinic state accompanied by elastic matching between the phase-separated states. These first-principle calculations further …
Piezoelectric and ferroelectric ceramics with a high Curie temperature (Tc) have attracted a growing attention owning to their applications under severe environments. In this work, phase structure, dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of (0.975-x)BiScO3-xPbTiO3-0.025Pb(Cd1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramics (x = 0.58-0.64) were studied. A composition-induced structural transformation occurs from rhombohedral phase to tetragonal phase through an intermediate monoclinic phase with the increasing PT concentration. The relationship between structure and electrical properties of the system were d…
A first-principles-derived approach is developed to study finite-temperature properties of PbZr{1-x}Ti{x}O3 (PZT) solid solutions near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Structural and piezoelectric predictions are in excellent agreement with experimental data and direct first-principles results. A low-temperature monoclinic phase is confirmed to exist, and is demonstrated to act as a bridge between the well-known tetragonal and rhombohedral phases delimiting the MPB. A successful explanation for the large piezoelectricity found in PZT ceramics is also provided.
There is a general perception that large piezoelectric response in ferroelectric alloys requires tuning the system towards a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), i.e., a composition driven inter-ferroelectric instability. Here we show that high piezoelectric response can be realized even in non-MPB alloy systems. This is demonstrated on (1-x)PbTiO3-(x)Bi(Zr0.5Ni0.5)O3 (PT-BNZ) by a comprehensive study involving electric-field and temperature dependent XRD, Raman spectroscopy, dielectric, piezoelectric and high field electrostrain measurements. We found that poling-field irreversibly suppresses t…
We report on the frequency and stress dependence of the direct piezoelectric d33 coefficient in BiFeO3 ceramics. The measurements reveal considerable piezoelectric nonlinearity, i.e., dependence of d33 on the amplitude of the dynamic stress. The nonlinear response suggests a large irreversible contribution of non-180° domain walls to the piezoelectric response of the ferrite, which, at present measurement conditions, reached a maximum of 38% of the total measured d33. In agreement with this interpretation, both types of non-180° domain walls, characteristic for the rhombohedral BiFeO3, i.e., 7…
Bulk single-crystal relaxor-ferroelectrics, like Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT), are widely known for their large piezoelectricity. This is attributed to polarization rotation which is facilitated by the presence of various crystal symmetries for compositions near a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Relaxor-ferroelectric thin films, which are necessary for low-voltage applications, suffer a reduction in their piezoelectric response due to clamping by the passive substrate. To understand the microscopic behavior of this adverse phenomenon, we employ AC electric field driven in-operando synch…
The fundamental shear horizontal (SH0) wave in plate-like structures is extremely useful for non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) as it is non-dispersive. However, currently the SH0 wave is usually excited by electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) whose energy conversion efficiency is fairly low. The face-shear (d36) mode piezoelectrics is more promising for SH0 wave excitation but this mode cannot appear in conventional piezoelectric ceramics. Recently, by modifying the symmetry of poled PbZr1-xTixO3 (PZT) ceramics via ferroelastic domain engineering, we r…
The phase diagram of lead-free piezoelectric (1-x)K0.5Na0.5NbO3-xBi0.5Na0.5TiO3 system has been studied by high-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The two lead-free piezoelectric compounds, K0.5Na0.5NbO3 and Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 tend to form an infinite solid solution. The oxygen octahedral tilt system has been mapped as a function of composition and temperature. The results indicate that K0.5Na0.5NbO3-Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 does not display a morphotropic phase boundary like lead zirconate titanate, and that the most signific…

Enhanced room-temperature electromechanical coupling in the lead-free ferroelectric system $(1-x)$BaZr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$O$_{3}$ - $x$Ba$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$TiO$_{3}$ (abbreviated as BZCT) at $x=0.5$ is attributed to the existence of a morphotropic phase region (MPR) containing an intermediate orthorhombic ($O$) phase between terminal rhombohedral ($R$) BZT and tetragonal ($T$) BCT phases. However, there is ambiguity regarding the morphotropic phase transition in BZCT at room temperature - while some experiments suggest a single $O$ phase within the MPR, others indicate coexistence of three polar …
Monte Carlo simulations based on a first-principles-derived Hamiltonian are conducted to study the properties of PZT alloys compositionally modulated along the [100] pseudocubic direction near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). It is shown that compositional modulation causes the polarization to continuously rotate away from the modulation direction, resulting in the unusual triclinic and C-type monoclinic ground states and huge enhancement of electromechanical responses (the peak of piezoelectric coefficient is as high as 30000 pC/N). The orientation dependence of dipole-dipole interactio…
