We use Bayesian model selection tools to forecast the Planck satellite's ability to distinguish between different models for the reionization history of the Universe, using the large angular scale signal in the cosmic microwave background polarization spectrum. We find that Planck is not expected to be able to distinguish between an instantaneous reionization model and a two-parameter smooth reionization model, except for extreme values of the additional reionization parameter. If it cannot, then it will be unable to distinguish between different two-parameter models either. However, Bayesian model averaging will be needed to obtain unbiased estimates of the optical depth to reionization. We also generalize our results to a hypothetical future cosmic variance limited microwave anisotropy survey, where the outlook is more optimistic.
The WMAP first year detection of a high redshift reionization through its imprints on CMB anisotropy T and TE mode angular power spectra calls for a better comprehension of the universe ionization and thermal history after the standard recombination. Different reionization mechanisms predict different signatures in the CMB, both in temperature and polarization anisotropies and in spectral distortions. The Planck capability to distinguish among different scenarios through its sensitivity to T, TE, and E mode angular power spectra is discussed. Perspectives open by future high sensitivity experi…
The first-year WMAP data release showed that the reionization optical depth to CMB photons is greater than previously thought. This follows from unexpectedly high values of the C^TE_l spectrum, for l up to ~30, presumably allowing a measurement of the E-mode polarization spectrum C^E_l sooner than expected. This note aims to test the capability of large-angle polarization experiments to explore the history of the cosmological reionization, considering also the impact of cosmic variance. In particular, here we discuss how well the ionized fraction x_e and the reionization redshift z_r can be se…
We show that the delay of structure formation can not fully account for the reduction of electron optical depth from WMAP1 to WMAP3 when the radiative transfer effects and feedback mechanisms are took into account in computing the reionization history of the Universe. We also show that a PopIII stellar cluster with a mass of 80Mo and a heavy Larson initial mass function has an ionizing efficiency high enough to account for WMAP3 results, while in the case of WMAP1, a higher stellar mass of 1000Mo was required.
Using the near-infrared (NIR) observations of the afterglows of the high redshift ($5 \la z \la 25$) gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) which will be detected by the {\it Swift} satellite, we discuss a way to study the cosmic reionization history. In principle the details of the cosmic reionization history are well imprinted in the NIR spectra of the GRB afterglows. However the spectroscopy with a space telescope is required to obtain such an information for a very high redshift ($z\ga 15$) unless the neutral fraction of the high-$z$ universe is less than $10^{-6}$. The broad-band photometry has the high…
The temperature of the diffuse, photo-heated intergalactic medium (IGM) depends on its reionization history because the thermal time scales are long. The widths of the hydrogen Lyman-alpha absorption lines seen in the spectra of distant quasars that arise in the IGM can be used to determine its temperature. We use a wavelet analysis of the Lyman-alpha forest region of quasar spectra to demonstrate that there is a relatively sudden increase in the line widths between redshifts z=3.5 and 3.0, which we associate with entropy injection resulting from the reionization of HeII. The subsequent fall-o…
We study CMB secondary anisotropies produced by inhomogeneous reionization by means of cosmological simulations coupled with the radiative transfer code CRASH. The reionization history is consistent with the WMAP Thomson optical depth determination. We find that the signal arising from this process dominates over the primary CMB component for l > 4000 and reaches a maximum amplitude of l(l+1)C_l/2π~ 1.6 x 10^{-13} on arcmin scale, i.e. l as large as several thousands. We then cross-correlate secondary CMB anisotropy maps with neutral hydrogen 21cm line emission fluctuations obtained from the s…
The reionization of the Universe has profound effects on the way galaxies form and on their observed properties at later times. Of particular importance is the relative timing of the reionization history of a region and its halo assembly history, which can affect the nature of the first stars formed in that region, the properties and radial distribution of its stellar halo, globular cluster population and its satellite galaxies. We distinguish two basic cases for the reionization of a halo - internal reionization, whereby the stars forming in situ reionize their host galaxy, and external reion…
The thermal evolution of the intergalactic medium (IGM) depends on the reionization history of the universe. Numerical simulations indicate that the low density IGM, which is responsible for the low column density Ly-alpha forest, follows a well defined temperature-density relation. This results in a cut-off in the distribution of line widths as a function of column density. We use hydrodynamic simulations to calibrate the relation between the cut-off and the temperature-density relation and apply this relation to Keck spectra spanning a redshift range z=2-4.5. We find that the temperature pea…
The recent measurement by WMAP of a large electron scattering optical depth tau_e = 0.17 +- 0.04 is consistent with a simple model of reionization in which the intergalactic medium (IGM) is ionized at redshift z ~ 15, and remains highly ionized thereafter. Here, we show that existing measurements of the IGM temperature from the Lyman-alpha forest at z ~ 2 - 4 rule out this ``vanilla'' model. Under reasonable assumptions about the ionizing spectrum, as long as the universe is reionized before z = 10, and remains highly ionized thereafter, the IGM reaches an asymptotic thermal state which is too…
In cosmological models favored by current observations, the first astrophysical objects formed in dark matter halos at redshifts starting at z>20, and their properties were determined by primordial H_2 molecular chemistry. These protogalaxies were very abundant, but substantially less massive than typical galaxies in the local Universe. Extreme metal-poor stars, and massive black holes in their nuclei reionized the bulk of the hydrogen in the intergalactic medium. Reionization may have taken place over an extended redshift interval, ending around z=7. Observational probes of the process of rei…
Estimates of inflationary parameters from the CMB B-mode polarization spectrum on the largest scales depend on knowledge of the reionization history, especially at low tensor-to-scalar ratio. Assuming an incorrect reionization history in the analysis of such polarization data can strongly bias the inflationary parameters. One consequence is that the single-field slow-roll consistency relation between the tensor-to-scalar ratio and tensor tilt might be excluded with high significance even if this relation holds in reality. We explain the origin of the bias and present case studies with various …
We use a semi-analytical approach to simulate absorption spectra of QSOs at high redshifts with the aim of constraining the cosmic reionization history. We consider two physically motivated and detailed reionization histories: (i) an Early Reionization Model (ERM) in which the intergalactic medium is reionized by PopIII stars at $z\approx 14$, and (ii) a more standard Late Reionization Model (LRM) in which overlapping, induced by QSOs and normal galaxies, occurs at $z\approx 6$. From the analysis of current Ly$α$ forest data at $z < 6$, we conclude that it is impossible to disentangle the two …
The recent discovery of a high optical depth tau to Thomson scattering from the WMAP data implies that significant reionization took place at redshifts z~15. This discovery has important implications for the sources of reionization, and allows, for the first time, constraints to be placed on physical reionization scenarios out to redshift z~20. Using a new suite of semi-analytic reionization models, we show that the high value of tau requires a surprisingly high efficiency epsilon of the first generation of UV sources for injecting ionizing photons into the intergalactic medium. We find that n…
We show a possible way to measure the column density of free electrons along the light path, the so-called Dispersion Measure (DM), from the early $[\sim 415 (ν/1 {\rm GHz})^{-2} ({\rm DM}/10^{5} {\rm pc} {\rm cm}^{-3}) {\rm s}]$ radio afterglows of the gamma-ray bursts. We find that the proposed Square Kilometer Array can detect bright radio afterglows around the time $\sim 10^{3}(ν/160 {\rm MHz})^{-2}$ s to measure the intergalactic DM ($\simg 6000$ pc cm$^{-3}$ at redshift $z>6$) up to $z\sim 30$, from which we can determine the reionization history of the universe and identify the missing …
We represent the reionization history of the universe as a free function in redshift and study the potential for its extraction from CMB polarization spectra. From a principal component analysis, we show that the ionization history information is contained in 5 modes, resembling low-order Fourier modes in redshift space. The amplitude of these modes represent a compact description of the observable properties of reionization in the CMB, easily predicted given a model for the ionization fraction. Measurement of these modes can ultimately constrain the total optical depth, or equivalently the in…
We calculate the reionization history in Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models. The epoch of the end of reionization and the Thomson scattering optical depth to the cosmic microwave background depend on the power spectrum amplitude on small scales and on the ionizing photon emissivity per unit mass in collapsed halos. We calibrate the emissivity to reproduce the measured ionizing background intensity at z=4. Models in which all CDM halos have either a constant emissivity or a constant energy emitted per Hubble time, per unit mass, predict that reionization ends near z~6 and the optical depth is in the…
The recent discovery of a Gunn--Peterson (GP) trough in the spectrum of the redshift 6.28 SDSS quasar has raised the tantalizing possibility that we have detected the reionization of the universe. However, a neutral fraction (of hydrogen) as small as 0.1% is sufficient to cause the GP trough, hence its detection alone cannot rule out reionization at a much earlier epoch. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization anisotropy offers an alternative way to explore the dark age of the universe. We show that for most models constrained by the current CMB data and by the discovery of a GP tro…
On large angular scales, CMB polarization depends mostly on the evolution of the ionization level of the IGM during reionization. In order to avoid biasing parameter estimates, an accurate and model independent approach to reionization is needed when analyzing high precision data, like those expected from the Planck experiment. In this paper we consider two recently proposed methods of fitting for reionization and we discuss their respective advantages. We test both methods by performing a MonteCarlo Markov Chain analysis of simulated Planck data, assuming different fiducial reionization histo…
We show that the epoch(s) of reionization when the ionization fraction of the universe is about half can be determined by correlating Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature maps with 21-cm line maps at degree scales ($l\sim 100$). During reionization peculiar motion of free electrons induces the Doppler anisotropy of the CMB, while density fluctuations of neutral hydrogen induce the 21-cm line anisotropy. In our simplified model of inhomogeneous reionization, a positive correlation arises as the universe reionizes whereas a negative correlation arises as it recombines; thus, the sign of…
Population-III (Pop-III) starformation (SF) is thought to be quenched when the metallicity of the star-forming gas reaches a critical level. At high z, when the general intergalactic medium (IGM) was enriched with metals, the fraction of primordial gas already collapsed in minihalos was significantly larger than the fraction of primordial gas that had already been involved in Pop-III SF. We argue that this minihalo gas remained largely in a metal-free state, until these minihalos merged into large systems and formed stars. As a result, the era of Pop-III SF was significantly prolonged, leading…
In light of the recent inference of a high optical depth to Thomson scattering, tau, from the WMAP data we investigate the effects of extended periods of partial ionization and ask if the value of tau inferred by assuming a single sharp transition is an unbiased estimate. We construct and consider several representative ionization models and evaluate their signatures in the CMB. If tau is estimated with a single sharp transition we show that there can be a significant bias in the derived value (and therefore a bias in sigma8 as well). For WMAP noise levels the bias in tau is smaller than the s…
Recent observations of z~6 quasars and the cosmic microwave background imply a complex history to cosmic reionization. Such a history requires some form of feedback to extend reionization over a long time interval, but the nature of the feedback and how rapidly it operates remain highly uncertain. Here we focus on one aspect of this complexity: which physical processes can cause the global ionized fraction to evolve non-monotonically with cosmic time? We consider a range of mechanisms and conclude that double reionization is much less likely than a long, but still monotonic, ionization history…
Full radiative transfer in 3D space has been solved to pursue the reionization history in an inhomogeneous universe. It has been shown that the reionization of an inhomogeneous universe is not a prompt event, but a fairly slow process. Also, QSO absorption line systems are simulated with using the results of radiative transfer calculations. Ly$α$ continuum depression implies that the metagalactic UV intensity decreases rapidly with $z$ at $z>5$, and the reionization must have taken place between $z=6$ and 10. Finally, it is stressed that H$α$ forest is a more powerful tool to probe the reioniz…
The Doppler parameter distribution of Lyman-alpha absorption is calculated for a set of different reionization histories. The differences in temperature between different reionization histories are as large as a factor three to four depending on the spectrum of the ionizing sources and the redshift of helium reionization. These temperature differences result in observable differences in the Doppler parameter distribution. Best agreement with the observed Doppler parameter distribution between redshift two and four is found if hydrogen and helium are reionized simultaneously at or before redshi…
We study the evolution of baryonic gas before the reionization in the lognormal (LN) model of cosmic clustering. We show that the thermal history of the universe around the reionization can roughly be divided into three epochs: 1) cold dark age $z>z_r$, in which baryon gas is neutral, and opaque to Ly$α$ photons; 2) hot dark age $z_r > z> z_{gp}$, in which a predominant part of baryon gas is ionized and hot, but it is still opaque to Ly$α$ photons; 3) bright age $z<z_{gp}$, in which the universe is ionized highly enough to be transparent to Ly$α$ photons. In the flat cold dark matter cosmologi…
Based on the gamma-ray burst (GRB) event rate at redshifts of $4 \leq z \leq 12$, which is assessed by the spectral peak energy-to-luminosity relation recently found by Yonetoku et al., we observationally derive the star formation rate (SFR) for Pop III stars in a high redshift universe. As a result, we find that Pop III stars could form continuously at $4 \leq z \leq 12$. Using the derived Pop III SFR, we attempt to estimate the ultraviolet (UV) photon emission rate at $7 \leq z \leq 12$ in which redshift range no observational information has been hitherto obtained on ionizing radiation inte…
We incorporate quasars into an analytic model to describe the reheating and reionization of the universe. In combination with a previous study of galaxies and Lyman-$α$ clouds, we are able to provide a unified description of structure formation, verified against a large variety of observations. We also take into account the clumping of the baryonic gas in addition to the presence of collapsed objects. We consider two cosmologies: a critical universe with a CDM power-spectrum and an open universe with $Ω_0=0.3$, $Λ=0$. The derived quasar luminosity function agrees reasonably well with observati…
A variety of observations now indicate that intergalactic helium was fully ionized by z~3. The most recent measurements of the high-redshift quasar luminosity function imply that these sources had produced ~2.5 ionizing photons per helium atom by that time, consistent with a picture in which the known quasar population drives HeII reionization. Here we describe the distribution of ionized and neutral helium gas during this era. Because the sources were rare and bright (with the photon budget dominated by quasars with luminosities L>L_\star), random fluctuations in the quasar population determi…
We study the reionization history of the Universe in cosmological models with non-Gaussian density fluctuations, taking them to have a renormalized $χ^2$ probability distribution function parametrized by the number of degrees of freedom, $ν$. We compute the ionization history using a simple semi-analytical model, considering various possibilities for the astrophysics of reionization. In all our models we require that reionization is completed prior to $z=6$, as required by the measurement of the Gunn--Peterson optical depth from the spectra of high-redshift quasars. We confirm previous results…
We discuss the effect of dispersion delay due to intervening ionized media in the radio emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). For high redshift GRBs ($z \ga 3$), the ionized intergalactic medium (IGM) should be the dominant source of dispersion without substantial local or foreground contamination, offering a unique probe of the cosmic reionization epoch through measures of the free electron column density out to different redshifts. The delay times from $z \sim 10$ can be $\sim$ 1 hour at 100 MHz and $\sim$ 10 hours at 30 MHz. On the other hand, dispersion by local ionized material may be impo…
We study the constraints on reionization from five years of WMAP data, parametrizing the evolution of the average fraction of ionized hydrogen with principal components that provide a complete basis for describing the effects of reionization on large-scale E-mode polarization. Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, we find that the resulting model-independent estimate of the total optical depth is nearly twice as well determined as the estimate from 3-year WMAP data, in agreement with simpler analyses that assume instantaneous reionization. The mean value of the optical depth from principal c…
We study the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in cold and mixed dark matter (CDM and MDM) models, with non scale-invariant primordial power spectra (i.e. $n \neq 1$) and a late, sudden reionization of the intergalactic medium at redshift $z_{rh}$. We test these models against recent detections of CMB anisotropy at large and intermediate angular scales. We find that current CMB anisotropy measurements cannot discriminate between CDM and MDM models. Our likelihood analysis indicates that models with blue power spectra ($n \simeq 1.2$) and a reionization at $z_{rh} \sim 20$ are…
We consider a model for the reionization history of the Universe in which a significant fraction of the observed optical depth is a result of direct reionization by the decay products of a scaling cosmic defect network. We show that such network can make a significant contribution to the reionization history of the Universe even if its energy density is very small (the defect energy density has to be greater than about $10^{-11}$ of the background density). We compute the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature, polarization and temperature-polarization cross power spectrum and show that a con…
The dust produced by the first generation of stars will be a foreground to cosmic microwave background. In order to evaluate the effect of this early dust, we calculate the power spectrum of the dust emission anisotropies and compare it with the sensitivity limit of the Planck satellite. The spatial distribution of the dust is estimated through the distribution of dark matter. At small angular scales ($\ell \gtrsim 1000$) the dust signal is found to be noticeable with the Planck detector for certain values of dust lifetime and production rates. The dust signal is also compared to sensitivities…
After considering the effects of negative feedback on the process of star formation, we explore the relationship between star formation process and the associated feedback, by investigating how the mechanical feedback from supernovae(SNe) and radiative feedback from luminous objects regulate the star formation rate and therefore affect the cosmic reionization.Based on our present knowledge of the negative feedback theory and some numerical simulations, we construct an analytic model in the framework of the Lambda cold dark matter model. In certain parameter regions, our model can explain some …
We summarize existing constraints on the epoch of reionization and discuss the observational probes that are sensitive to the process. We focus on the role large scale polarization can play. Polarization probes the integrated optical depth across the entire epoch of reionization. Future missions such as Planck and CMBPol will greatly enhance our knowledge of the reionization history, allowing us to measure the time evolution of the ionization fraction. As large scale polarization probes high redshift activity, it can best constrain models where the Universe was fully or partially ionized at ea…
In a universe with inhomogeneous reionization, the ionized patches create a second order signal in the cosmic microwave background polarization anisotropy. This signal originates in the coupling of the free electron fluctuation to the quadruple moment of the temperature anisotropy. We examine the contribution from a simple inhomogeneous reionization model and find that the signal from such a process is below the detectable limits of the Planck Surveyor mission. However t he signal is above the fundamental uncertainty limit from cosmic variance, so th at a future detection with a high accuracy …
We develop an efficient method to study the effects of reionization history on the temperature-density relation of the intergalactic medium in the low density limit (overdensity less than 5). It is applied to the study of photo-reionization models in which the amplitude, spectrum and onset epoch of the ionizing flux, as well as the cosmology, are systematically varied. We find that the mean temperature-density relation at z=2-4 is well approximated by a power-law equation of state for uniform reionization models. We derive analytical expressions for its evolution and exhibit its asymptotic beh…
We quantify and discuss the footprints of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) on the spectra of high-redshift (z ~ 6) sources, using mock spectra generated from hydrodynamical simulations of the IGM. We show that it should be possible to extract relevant parameters, including the mean neutral fraction in the IGM, and the radius of the local cosmological Stromgren region, from the flux distribution in the observed spectra of distant sources. We focus on quasars, but a similar analysis is applicable to galaxies and gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglows. We explicitly include uncertaint…
I calculate a hybrid cross-power spectrum estimator from the WMAP 5-year CMB temperature maps, discuss the goodness of fit, and then constrain cosmological parameters. The spectrum and results are generally consistent with previous results, though the power spectrum error bars are slightly smaller and there are small shifts at high ell. The small improvement in error bars is obtained at very low numerical cost but does not significantly improve parameter constraints. I discuss the accuracy of the likelihood model and how constraints on the optical depth translate into constraints on the reioni…
We present a self-consistent, semi-analytical LCDM model of star formation and reionization. For the cosmological parameters favored by the WMAP data, our models consistently reproduce the optical depth to reionization, redshift of reionization and the observed luminosity functions (LF) and hence the star formation rate (SFR) density at 3<z<6 for a reasonable range of model parameters. While simple photoionization feedback produces the correct shape of LF at z = 6, for $z = 3$ we need additional feedback that suppresses star formation in halos with 10<log(M/M_\odot)<11. Models with prolonged c…
In this paper we show how the rescattering of CMB photons after cosmic reionization can give a significant linear contribution to the temperature-matter cross-correlation measurements. These anisotropies, which arise via a late time Doppler effect, are on scales much larger than the typical scale of non-linear effects at reionization; they can contribute to degree scale cross-correlations and could affect the interpretation of similar correlations resulting from the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. While expected to be small at low redshifts, these correlations can be large given a probe of the …
We study contributions to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum from non-Gaussianity induced by secondary anisotropies during reionization. Large-scale structure in the reionized epoch both gravitational lenses CMB photons and produces Doppler shifts in their temperature from scattering off electrons in infall. The resulting correlation is potentially observable through the CMB bispectrum. The second-order Ostriker-Vishniac also couples to a variety of linear secondary effects to produce a bispectrum. For the currently favored flat cosmological model with a low matter content and sm…
We investigate the possibility that the Universe is reionized by the decay products of heavy particles. In particular we study under which circumstances this decay may produce a significant reionization at high redshift ($z \simeq 20$), as requested by the WMAP result.Extra sources of reionization at high redshifts increase the recombination rate. As a result, the number density of decaying particles required to produce a high level of ionization at $z \simeq 10-20$ is significantly higher ($\simeq 300$ times) than previously estimated. Moreover, the ionization produced by decay particles impl…
We present detailed predictions for the redshifted 21cm signal from the epoch of reionization. These predictions are obtained from radiative transfer calculations on the results of large scale (100/h Mpc), high dynamic range, cosmological simulations. We consider several scenarios for the reionization history, of both early and extended reionization. From the simulations we construct and analyze a range of observational characteristics, from the global signal, via detailed images and spectra, to statistical representations of rms fluctuations, angular power spectra, and probability distributio…
